I need help losing weight and getting back in shape (1 Viewer)

Logging what the hell you eat sounds like a real pain in the ###. Can't you just decide not to eat too much and make a concerted effort to move your body often?
Sure but most people who do that don't blow up like a tick as is the case with the OP and his wife (although she supposedly wears her two bills well).

Generally speaking, if you've got a weight problem you've shown unable to do this on your own. The app helps identify where you're going wrong and make appropriate adjustments. Some people only need a couple/few weeks before they can do it on their own without the app, others need longer. The good news is the app saves your food entries, so as you use it it takes less time to log your food.

Logging is incredibly easy, particularly after the first few weeks when you've built up the foods you routinely eat. I probably don't spend more than 1-2 minutes per day logging food. I recommend it for anyone struggling with weight. First to baseline and give awareness of how much more they are consuming than they really need, and then to help figure out the foods and eating plan to reach and sustain their long term goals.

Basically it ends up being eat less, exercise more, but tracking also teaches and provides data to help build and sustain better health habits.

Quick question....mid 30s with 20 lbs to lose at least....how many calories per day to still live but drop a couple lbs a week. About 4 days a week I lift and get in 10 to 20 min of cardio each time at gym.
how much do you weigh?
235.Ish haha
Going to need your height here too.

north of 2k, probably 2500+ on exercise days, download myfitnesspal and track. You should get a better read after a couple weeks.
Not going to lose a couple lbs. a week eating 2k+ calories. 1500 is more like it.

Standard caveat, it depends person-to-person, but that's a good starting point for a relatively active person of his size. It's also why he needs to re-eval after a couple of weeks. I lose weight if I am under 3K calories/day. My breakeven is around 3500 and north of 4K on long run days.

1500......ouch!

1500 net calories is about the right target to lose 2 lbs a week. Net being an important distinction, so you want total calories - active calories to come out around 1500.

Assuming you have an office job, your TDEE is about 2,500. Shoot for 2,000 calories/day average, mix in some exercise a couple of days a week, and you'll be down to 210 by summer.

If you lose weight when you are under 3k calories than you likely have a lot more muscle than the average person.

true, which is why it depends. I assume someone who lifts 4 times per week to have more muscle than the avg person.

Great info thanks. Also curious my app has the goal of 10k steps and was curious if that is considered an avg day for most? Had to jog after dinner last 2 nights to get to it but wasn't far.

an average day for the average cubicle fatty is closer to 4000 steps than 10,000 steps. no way people are walking 5 miles a day

6'5 and 285...guess I'll restart this. Need to come up with motivation to work out in the morning as I dont have the time after work. Workout ideas? How many calories.

gonna need to unpack this a bit more.
sorry phone posting sucks...

need an exercise routine for a fat guy with a bad lower back. What should be my calorie intake be to lose 1 lb/week?

walk for an hour, intermittently do some squats, and if feasible set your cap at 2k calories. Re-eval after a couple weeks. Ideally the calories are working and you can start ramping up the exercise.Edit, pools are awesome for fat guys too.

Easiest way to do this is to download MyFitnessPal, put your m height/weight/desired loss, and make sure to put in sedentary lifestyle. It will calculate your calories for you.

Definitely requires effort. I have really fallen away from walking the past couple of months but this summer when i was trying it would take a 30 minute walk at lunch time and 50 minutes in the evening to get my usual 3k steps up and over 10k. Need to get more active again soon.

Speaking of good fats, avocados are the greatest food ever invented.
Love avocados, should really buy some for afternoon snacks. Used to love cutting them in half, salting them (sodium problem) and eating them. Bunch of calories?
300 calories each. They are very good for you but not the first food I would recommend while you're cutting.
hmmm, i beg to differ. I will replace yokes and cheese with spinnache and avacado in my morning eggs. Three egg whites and huge handfull of spinnache finished with 1/2 of an avacado on top. Great start to the day. What is that 250-300 calories total?

difference between a half avocado and a whole one.If you've got an idea to keep a cut avocado fresh for a day I'm all ears/eyes. I'd much rather eat a half than a whole.

Good job gussy. As my pm to you mentioned , I'm exactly like you but your thread has convinced me to start making life style changes. Quit drinking a week ago (doesn't seem like a big deal but I drank a lot). I just read Allen karrs book and stopped. Started walking 30 min a day on treadmill and completely changed diet. I also bought the Jillian workout DVDs on another posters suggestion and will star those in two weeks. Dr told me to walk 30 min a day for two weeks before starting them. No FF and no drinking calories. Down 6 pounds in two weeks. Down to 241. I need to start logging my food again for inspiration.thanks again gussy.

I took a pic of myself when started and in 3 mos will post pic of the new me.

Mornings are much cooler than evenings and many people use this time to run outdoors. The only motivation I can see for going to the gym early is that you gain an extra hour during the day. I don't see why you wouldn't have time after work, I used to go to the gym late like 9 or 10 pm there is nothing wrong with going late, one advantage of going late is you can't drink in the evening with the gym on the schedule at 9.

It's a goal because it's a decent amount above average. Moops gave a number above that's in the range of average.

MAC, Long time lurker, very infrequent poster here, Take the remaining half (pit removed) and place it cut side down in a bowl with enough water to cover the cut surface. Plastic wrap and store in the fridge. I've kept them for up to two days with little browning. Certainly should last a day.

Today is day 10.

Lost weight! I have got to start walking though. I'll have to just go to a mall during lunch or something.

Corporate Christmas party for lunch, department party tomorrow, Star Wars tonight. Constant vigilance!

Had a small bit of everything at lunch:

garden greens salad w/balsamic vinaigrette

asparagus w/bacon

corn & butterbean succotash

parmesan potatoes w/pancetta - how alliterative!

sweet potatoes w/pecans and I'm sure other sweet things

champagne chicken

strip steak w/mushrooms

dessert - small piece of pecan pie

It was a full plate, but nothing like I might eat in the past. Biggest difference to me was there was I didn't "ooh, I like that" [two big heap of helpings of item here]. Also, no food stacked on top of each other. Also also, only one piece of dessert. All these things are positives in my eyes.

No food until the movie, which will be easy to do as I'm napping until our 1:00 am showing (yeah, I'm a real genius...). Going to have a sandwich and some chips pre-movie, NO MOVIE SNACKS! Probably the largest Coke Zero imaginable at my side. :banned:

Tomorrow I'll need to be sure to watch things a bit more, as it's a potluck environment with all kinds of Christmas sweets and such available.

We're gonna make it.

What exercise equipment is available to you? Are you going to a gym or do you have some equipment at your house? Squats may not be a great place to start if your back is that bad. What exercises can you do? Has your Dr told you to avoid certain exercises?

I used to work in the evening at a local gym for years. When my daughter was born, I put a gym in my basement and worked out after work at home. That was tough to get used to. I was used to being motivated by the energy of the gym. I got used to that but then wanted to spend my evenings with my family so I started working out at 6 am. That too took a few months of getting used to. I really hated waking and working out a few minutes later. Now, I love starting my day with my workout and Slayer or Metallica on my headphones ruining what little hearing I have left. Do not give up when it feels strange or difficult working out soon after waking. Give it time. Having the extra time in the evening is awesome.

Good luck to you.

It can be tough to go to the gym at night if you have kids. Also, I'm usually burned out by that time. But I know some people can do it.

I cut it in half and put the second half with the pit in the fridge. the next day I remove the pit and cut off a very thin layer on top. Like new and tastes just as good as the prior day.

I love this.
We're gonna bake it!

I'm rooting for these guys.

My eating habits are probably close to gussy and have been trying to make better eating choices.

I just can't go extreme like some of these dudes but just starting by simple choices to start the process.

Cut out fast food, avoid soda, more water, snack on fruits, veggies and nuts and when I do eat crap I'm gonna try to not eat as much of it.

Last week I said got a calzone. Thanks to gussy I was inspired and only ate half of it.

Might start a new diet.

The half diet.

Eat whatever you want, just eat 1/2 of it.

Profit?

Wife and I have gone with a "do it to lose it" weight loss plan. Sex in the morning, sex before bed.

14 pounds down for me, 11 for her.

Best idea we ever had.

1500......ouch!
I'm not recommending it. You didn't get fat overnight so there's no reason to try to get thin overnight. 2000 calories (assuming no extra exercise) and you'll lose a pound a week. That's 50 pounds in a year.

IMO lose the weight so your back doesn't hurt, then concentrate on working out. Use an app like myfitnesspal to set and track your calorie goals.

Quick Saturday update, I was up 2.8 lbs this week to 259lbs, total loss after 2 weeks now is 2.4 lbs, which, I guess is right on track with my lb a week goal, but I know I can do way better than that, at least initially. I'm probably only going to check in here weekly at this point, just got to the point that there was too much conflicting information and more people who were discouraging than there were that were encouraging. It's going to be tough through the holidays for me, I realize that. Last week I had probably 4 good days and 3 not so good. I think once we get past Christmas and New Years Day it will be a lot easier for me to be strict every day. Met with my heart dr. yesterday, BP was down to 122 over 90, which is better than typical, I knew it was out of line last week at my regular doc. My cholesterol is in better shape than 6 months ago outside of my tri-glycerides. I told her what I was doing with myfitnesspal and she wants to see me again in 3 months, so I have checkups scheduled both with my regular doc and heart doc in March, my goal is to be somewhere close to 240 by that time and I think I can do that.

Hang in there.

Just day by day man.

I've been 2 weeks soda and fast food free.

I'm not sure what I have lost.

Honestly, I don't want to hop on a scale every few days.

My main objective is wanting to eat healthier the weight is secondary. I don't want to lose track of that and get discouraged looking at a scale and seeing i only lost 3lbs in my "huge" sacrifice thus far.

Your goal of losing 1 pound/week is realistic. You only New Years to get past now. Just do not gain any weight over the holidays and you can call that a win. Food and booze is everywhere this time of the year. Cookies are my vice. I have been eating a few cookies every day for the last few weeks. Fortunately, I am actually sick of them now thank god.

Do not be discouraged by negative posters or having a bad day. Brush off the bad day and get back on your diet and walking.
