I'm not saying I'm anything specialBut that's a lame excuse the "I was under 30

Once."

The reason people gain as they get older is because they get more lazy.

Go to work

Sit in a chair

Go home

Eat

Sit on couch.

I think I've read studies where metabolism doesn't slow down as much as you think.

People just become less active.

And the reason I tell those people that

Is because they don't understand the amount of effort put in.

Making sure you eat X amount of calories everyday

Peaking for powerlifting -- adding weight to the bar every week.

You know how mentally exhausting that is to go from

One week 485 squat for 2

Next week 505 squat for 2

Etc

If your brain is not in it..you will fail

Lots of powerlifters get sick peaking too

Lowers immune system stressing it so much.

I'm not saying I'm a champ

My weight ( numbers ) suck

But I dislike the excuse when so much work/effort is put into the outcome.

Agree that there is no evidence that metabolism slows as you age. For women the reverse may be true past 55ish.

It's just another excuse for those to justify their fatness.

Agree. People throw the word "metabolism" around like the Idiocracy morons threw around the word "electrolytes". People don't know what metabolism means. Metabolism is the rate of burning calories, and calories create body heat. If you have the same general body shape at age 50 as you did at age 30, it makes no sense for your metabolism to be lower at age 50. It's common sense, if you have a lower metabolism at age 50 and are burning less calories but have mostly the same body type as at age 30, then would mean that your core body temperature is less at age 50 than it was at age 30 which just isn't true. The core body temperature is always 98.6F.

But if you throw pounds of insulating layers of fat on top of that age 30 body then certainly your metabolism has to go down otherwise you will overheat due to being overinsulated. Fat is what makes metabolism go down, not age.

.that's why lifting weights burns fat better than running ( which burns calories only )
I have no idea what "burns calories only" means but certainly fat (in combination with other fuels) is burned while running. And certainly running can lead to a reduction of body fat and losing weight.

No running doesn't burn fat my man.

The only thing that burns fat is muscle and organs.( these items need energy to function)

Running burns calories only.

Lifting weights creates muscle that burns fat

That is why the more muscular one looks the less fat they have

LBM goes up

Bodyfat goes down

How do you run without using your muscles?

I have explained it multiple times.

Cardio increases your TDEE

A calorie deficit is the thing that burns fat

To achieve deficit you can either have a good diet and not eat a 300 calorie snickers bar

Or you can do cardio and burn 300 calories and eat the snickers bar.

Cardio DOES NOT burn fat period.

Do cardio and eat 5000 calories

You will get fat

Why?

Because you are taking in more calories that your body needs.

Simply, calories in vs calories out. Is the difference between gaining and losing.

There are 3500 calories in a lb of fat.

You would have to do cardio for 3500 calories to burn fat..which is still a result of a deficit caloric intake.

Cardio burns calories and once you stop it stopped.

Weight lifting continues to burn calories days after the workout. Why? Because it takes energy ( calories ) to repair damaged muscle after a workout to make it bigger and stronger.

I can go into the gym and see people doing cardio who still look the same as they did 2 years ago.

The people who lift weights change dramatically.

I need to understand this a bit. If I run and burn calories and wind up taking in less calories than I consume for the day b/c some of those calories were burned while running, won't I lose fat?

If you think running works the leg muscles as much as squats etc

Completly different muscle fibers
I didn't compare running to squats. I'm disputing your false claim that running can't burn fat.
As mitch noted in his last post, he's just using semantics when saying running doesn't burn fat. He likely meant that it doesn't burn fat as effectively as resistance training. He's mentioned all along that it's only a caloric deficit that will ultimately reduce fat. That caloric deficit can be derived from dieting, running, weight training, some combination, whatever.

Here is what I know about powerlifters from my gym. They don't like to run because they aren't good at it. And it takes a little away from their max lifts. So they make up excuses why they shouldn't run. tHe normal guy not looking to set records should run a little bit to have an alternate way of burning calories, rather than relying solely on lifting. You know, diversify the calorie burning. A lot of the guys who quit lifting soon look awful.

yes you will lose fat...but my whole point was cardio BURNS calories.

as long as you stay in a deficit--whether you run or not

you will lose fat.

example

Person A needs 2000 calories a day

Person B needs 2000 calories

Person A runs and burns 1000 calories a day and consumes 2500 total calories

Person B does not run and just eats 2000 calories a day along with weight lifting. ( burns 500 calories per workout )

Person A has a net caloric intake of 1500 calories.

Person B has a net caloric intake of 1500 calories

it has nothing to do with being good or making excuses.

Just like a soccer player is not going to learn how to tackle someone like a football player...

bodybuilders do cardio during competition time..but mostly LISS..To burn some extra calories

Quite a few powerlifters also walk as well. but looks are not as important as in bodybuilding

Plenty of power lifters who look great..

dont listen to fat guys who use it as an excuse to be a fat man..lol :P

To me, he seems to be going past that. He's stated that the body cannot use fat as fuel (thus "burning fat") when running. This simply isn't true. In fact, serious distance runners specifically train to most optimally use fat for fuel in races. I've read article after article about this. Here's an example.

It's really a minor point so I won't clutter up the thread any longer with this argument.

Ok, just checking. Continue over-complicating the #### out of something which is pretty straight forward. Just kidding. :)

I think you are confusing burning stored fat ( which needs a caloric deficit) vs using ingest fats as fuel for workouts and such.

They are not using stored bodyfat as fuel...they are ingesting fat to use as fuel.

No, simple carbs are ingested during races. (Example, Gatorade). I've never heard of runners taking lard packets!

Competitive amateur runners and cyclists hardly have any fat to burn to begin with.

From a book I have...

"Even if you're a gaunt marathoner, your body has a large stockpile of energy in the form of fat. A 140 lbs. runner with a body-fat level of 6% still carries around 8.4 lbs. of fat. Each pound of fat supplies 3,500 calories of energy, so this individual has more than 29,000 calories stored as fat."

Weekend Update

A)Where's baloney sandwich? (crickets/GBR)

Weekend went OK I think. Hardly ate anything yesterday for breakfast/lunch in anticipation of being bad all weekend. Had granola for breakfast, an apple, and then some pretzel thins with hummus. Went to an (overrated) restaurant we hadn't been to last night called Venue. Service was poor, but probably kept me from drinking more than I should have. Ordered up the dirty belvadere martini on the rocks. Started with crab cakes, 2 each, with a mustard aoli. I was more than ready for another drink, told my waitress that by the time she got back I'd be ready, then she went AWOL. Started to get pissed, nothing I hate more than a waitress that doesn't keep my drink full, especially if I'm dropping coin somewhere nice. Ordered the 30 day dry rubbed 12 oz ribeye, spent more for it than the regular aged 14 oz ribeye thinking it would be something special, it wasn't. Tasted like a ribeye I could get from the local meat market. At home I'd be happy with it, when I just paid more for something special, I wasn't. FINALLY got my 2nd martini, told my wife if she was good I'd probably be on my 4th by now and she promptly told me to quit complaining and ruining her birthday and to relax. Had the green beans almondine and rice as my sides, with a cup of a mushroom soup that they make. None of it was spectacular. We split a piece of NY cheesecake for desert and I had a decaf and baileys. The cheesecake tasted like lemon. Wasn't impressed with the restaurant, but the bad service probably kept me from drinking double what I normally would have. Went home, had birthday sex (calorie burner baby), got up really late this morning, went to a watering hole across the street from the Pinnacle called Longwells, had a bloody mary, I had 12 buffalo wings for lunch, no sides or anything, finished with a Breckenridge Vanilla Porter and then went to the game. Just had water at the game. Was pretty hungry for the way home, drove through McD's, ordered a filet of fish combo meal, got it, promptly dropped all of my fries on the floor of the car, weather was ####ty, raining and cold, had to throw all the fries away, had a filet of fish and a diet coke (first soda all week) and that was it. I know I went over, I haven't added things up, the #### waitress and my butter fingers saved me a bunch of vodka/french fry calories. Now back home, wife is making a homemade mushroom soup for dinner and that will be it. It's a beef broth based soup, shouldn't be terrible for me if I skip the crackers. Oh, and the Huskers beat Rhode Island (baloney sandwich)

I guess the point i was making is that for me personally, I'm very close to the body fat level I want to be at as I would imagine are most serious runners and cyclists. So when I go for a ride, I don't care about burning any of that fat.

:lmao: Well at least thanks for your honesty.

Today is Day 6.

Don't worry, I haven't forgotten you gussy, just been with my family a lot lately as my grandfather had some surgery to remove cancer.

Man, sitting around a hospital is hard on a diet, I had to find reasons not to snack on something. But I managed "downtime" Thursday and Friday with a couple pieces of fruit and a couple chips every now and then (chips, not bags). Combine that with salads from the cafeteria and I came in under on my calories for both days.

Yesterday was back to normal, sticking to a plan with a goal in mind. Today we continue pursuit of a healthier me. I've had chicken breast and pork chop yesterday and today respectively. Having a bit of pizza for dinner, calories still in check.

We're gonna make it.

You guys all kill me, lol. I go out of town for a weekend and you expect sainthood. Steak/beans/rice, 2 vodka's, HALF a dessert, couple of drinks on a Saturday, wings, which are better for me than about everything else on the menu, and then the sandwich with the lowest caloric intake on the McD's menu. Jeebus Christ. Believe me, a normal night at that restaurant would NOT have been 2 vodka's OR half a dessert. And it probably would have been the burger with pulled pork on top, fries, and WAY more than 2 drinks before the game.

I'll make it, lol.

Gussy - you're doing fine. The fact that you're planning a meal and thinking about what you're eating is the answer.

[insert something here] speed.

Yes. I'm sure if I have cheat days on birthdays and through the holidays it will probably take 100 years.

Just added everything up, had just under 3000 calories yesterday, today I still have 659 left and we're having soup for dinner. Seems like I'm doomed.

Seriously. 3000 calories is totally fine but if you do that, you gotta follow it up with a 1000-1200 cal day, then you have a neutral weekend.

a 1k day is a terrible idea.
Disagree. Nothing wrong with fasting.Another example of people in this thread being dogmatic for no reason. Why is 1k a "terrible" idea. Makes no sense.
