[icon] have a favorite four roses recipe?
Have FAR from run the gamut on these so I'm prob not a great guy to ask, but I did have a OBSK that stood out to me.Yours?

Local shop is supposedly getting a private barrel picked by Jim in a month or two. Not sure if confirmed or not.

Damn stomach virus has had me dry for a couple days... going to ride it out to New Years eve. Have a full day of watching Football, Smoking various meats, and drinking Bourbon at a buddy's house. Pretty excited to check out the newly cleaned out "mead hall" room that has stone walls, rough sawn beams, a massive 8' fireplace, and a bar and a couple huge 12-top tables.

With several guys bringing stuff, some bottles that will be "on tap" that evening:

• Full spectrum of 2015 BTAC Except GT Stagg

• Full spectrum of Orphan barrel offerings
• Elijah Craig 12yr, 18yr, 23yr, and Barrel Proof
• Parkers heritage Wheat (8) and Malt (9)

• Midwinter Night's Dram (two "acts", not sure which)
• Old Forrester Birthday Bourbon '14 and '15
• Four Roses Small Batch Limited '14 and '15
• EH Taylor Cured Oak, Small Batch, Single Barrell
• Van Winkle Lot B, Pappy 15yr
• An assortment of Willett Family Reserve Ryes
• A ton of the usual suspects (Weller 12/107, Blantons, Several Eagle Rare picks, Some old dusty Fitz and HH, 1792 Port and Wheat, etc)

• Also cracking my vatted "poor man's pappy" (50% Weller 12, 40% Weller Antique 107, 10% Stagg Jr 132.2) that has been "melding" for 2 months now.

Not sure which part of the evening I'm most excited about. Going to be some solid food options too, I'm smoking a Beef Filet/Tenderloin then making Sliders (toasted rolls, beef consomme & red wine reduction with shallots, romaine, sliver of swiss and diced red onions that have been sweated a bit). Several other guys are cooking up other stuff and the ladies are bringing a host of dips, sides, desserts, etc. :banned:

OESK is my typical go-to, followed by OBSK and then probably OBSV actually

My bourbon group has picked 5 barrels with Jim and had an awesome time.

I have a feeling that he's going to start getting pretty tired of his name being whored out with some of the private picks that are coming out.

Yah very cool that you guys got to do that. Those pics you sent were awesome

No doubt on the whoring out thing.. I don't think I've seen a single FR pick that hasn't been "picked by Jim" lately.. hence my skepticism.

I want to grab a bottle of Hibiki 12 but have no clue which stores will have it in stock. Are there any reliable internet sites that have decently accurate stock listings?

http://www.wine-searcher.com/find/hibiki+12/1/usa is decent but likely won't have full listing of local inventory. Might be a bit of hunting to find it. It's not super rare (by limited burbon standards) but may require a couple stops. Or you can just call folks and ask.

Used your site and grabbed two bottles for $68 each. Had to drive almost into DC to get them, but get them I did.

I may crack one open NYE.

Thanks Again!

No prob! Hope it lives up to your expectations. I found mine to be better after a few weeks being open.

Local Air Guard group (155th AS) are doing an Eagle Rare barrel pick through Buffalo Trace. BT is no longer doing picks for anything but Buffalo Trace and 1792 Small Batch (in single barrel form), and even those will be sold out in the next few weeks. Beau, head of their select barrel program as been really cool and is offering them ER10 since they're military.

Some of my best buddies in the squadron are handling the pick and invited me (and another buddy) to join the 5 of them going for the pick. Basically it's a re-hash of a bachelor party group from this fall. I'm pretty damn excited as I'm lame and I've never even done a distillery tour let alone picked a barrel.

Worked up a mockup of the label for the bottles... plays off the squadron's location (via hernando desoto bridge) and history (memphis belle nose-art). Worked in their unofficial slogan as well.

Looks like our ER Barrel pick will be Feb 25th (hard hat tour, lunch, barrel pick session). May be staying in town an extra day to hit a couple more distilleries. Any suggestions/pointers from those who have done the bourbon tours before?

Heaven Hill removed the age statement from the front of the bottles of Elijah Craig 12 last year. It came out yesterday that they will be removing the age statement completely (off back label too) going forward. One of my friends alerted me to this possibility a couple years ago, so i stocked up at that time. Unfortunately, I drank through most of that stash already, so might need to reload before too long.

If anyone is a fan of EC12, I'd suggest grabbing some while you still can

Big thank you to those that have suggested Buffalo Trace as an inexpensive bourbon option. Picked some up for a Christmas party and it was a hit - 3 of us finished the bottle in a couple hours and were debating getting someone to head out and get us another bottle. Will definitely be buying it again, a steal in the 20-25 dollar range.

If you get a chance to try private barrel store picks, they can be even better. Once you figured out which ones have tasters who are good at it, frequent those stores for hand picked bottles as they're frequently tastier than the mass mixed stuff (which is still good).

Be sure to check out Larceny (similar price) for another killer value, IMO.
On a rec from the guy in my local store..picked up larceny.

Tasty and a very nice price.

Explain this to me like I'm five, please.

Yeah, why would they do that?

I believe, and I'm not expert but I want to star this thread, that now they can just put out Elijah Craig even if they made it last night and get the same price.

Not quite last night, for it to be a straight bourbon still (which I'm sure they'll do), all the juice has to be at least 2 years old. They will likely not be aging the juice that goes into it for 12 years anymore, which means the quality will likely suffer because it doesn't have as much time to pull flavors from the barrel.

Also wouldn't be surprised to see the 12 year released as a limited in a couple years similar to what they do with the 18+ year versions.

This. I would expect a mix of years, maybe some small amount of which is 12, to get a flavor profile they still like. But it won't be the same.

So I'm really dumb, but am I just noticing it or has bourbon like, exploded the last few years? So all this long aged stuff has demand that was never anticipated 12 or 14 or 23 years ago?

I read somewhere that bourbon doesn't need to age very long (as opposed to scotch) because it is aged in a climate (usually Kentucky) that sees much greater temperature differences than Scotland. Was that not true?

Bourbon uses new oak barrels while Scotch typically is aged in used bourbon barrels. I'm assuming this has an impact on aging because the bourbon has already pulled so much out of the wood.

1) Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year

2) Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Small Batch

3) Booker's

4) Woodford Reserve

5) Blanton's

6) Baker's

7) Eagle Rare

8) Jim Beam Black Double Aged

9) Angel's Envy

10) Buffalo Trace

11) Larceny

12) Maker's 46

13) Old Granddad 114
14) Maker's Mark

15) Lexington

16) Ridgemont Reserve
17) Bulleit

18) Rebel Yell

19) Four Roses

Been a long time since I rock and rolled up in here:

I'm going to be drinking neat from now on. I've figured out that having my whiskey cubes in the same freezer as other frozen foods is messing with the taste of the bourbon. I usually have one ice cube, but it's still messing it up.

2) Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch: I absolutely loved this. Pleasantly surprised. Bright, vanilla and caramel, velvet texture, and smooth as can be.

9) Angel's Envy: Mildly disappointed. Flavor was good, but it tasted "thin"...not a great texture.

11) Larceny: I cannot figure out how much I like this bourbon. I will say this...it is NOT smooth. But it's also not bitter. It's...complex. Smoky and sweet at the same time, and there's so much going on here that you don't even taste the caramel unless you wait to savor it...and then there's a LOT of caramel. This would probably do pretty well at a bourbon tasting...but it's an effort to drink. I don't want my bourbon to be an effort to drink.

From what I understand: It ages quicker, Yes.

Many master distillers find the sweet spot for bourbon to be well under 12 years. Case by case thing depending on mashbill (wheaters age more gracefully than rye heavy bourbons), warehouse location (higher = hotter = greater temp fluctuations).

That said its not instant. Many people enjoy EC12 for it being a great value for those who like older/oakier/12yr whiskeys. That flavor likely will be diminished. I'm not a big fan of it so it doesn't impact me, but it is somewhat of a whiskey icon falling down a peg.

Don't like that Buffalo Trace has moved the Eagle Rare age statement to the back as well. Could be a similar sign.

Some recent pickups:

2015 Old Forrester Birthday Bourbon - A gift from a buddy. Interesting pour. A tad overrated IMO, but is very good.

EH Taylor Barrel Proof 129.0 : Big fan. Few drops of water for me right now, but imagine it will settle in a bit after being open for a bit. I've heard it referred to as true Stagg Jr and that's a fair comparison. Younger and brighter but still very tasty.

A range of 4 Roses Single Barrel Selects (few different OESx recipes that I've not really had time to get into, yet) thanks to some bets on the Pats vs KC. As well as a Old Scout 10yr Single Barrel Cask.

Next up tonight... trying a sample of 2014 Old Rip Van Winkle 10yr sent in by a buddy. Also sent over an Elijah Craig Barrel Proof (#9 - 135.6pf), Old Forrester Birthday Bourbon '14, and the one I'm most interested in trying: Kentucky Owl Batch #2... curious how much us hype and how much is quality whiskey.

Somehow my buddy got me a Pappy Van Winkle Special Reserve 12...for 40 bucks. I have to drink it right?

I got one for not TOO much more than that, but $40 is a fantastic price. Nice score! It's tasty bourbon. "Smooth" is a four letter word among bourbon dorks, but that's exactly what it is. Not a ton of complexity or spice like found in higher rye mashbills, but it's an excellent pour. To most folks, it's virtually indistinguishable from its brother, Weller 12yr. Some actually prefer the latter. It's all subjective. If you choose to drink it you will likely enjoy it very much, but temper expectations regarding the "pappy" mystique.

If there is something else you'd prefer, I might be down to trade. Just let me know.

Going to keep it but will see what my buddy can do about another bottle.

Anyone done the Bourbon Trail? Thinking about that for Spring Break.
Guster has been a ton and is a great resource.

I haven't been but am looking forward to my first barrel pick and series of tours in late February. That said I've done a ton of reading and talking with folks who have been so I'd be happy to try and answer any questions

Hit a local ghetto liquor store yesterday on a whim and happened upon a pretty nice score of older discontinued stuff.

National Distillers -era Bourbon DeLuxe 200ml is the one I'm most excited to try. Have been itching to try some of the whiskey that place churned out but never really got the chance. Found a few other old goodies in the same refrigerator at the register. Had been sitting there long enough (20+ years) to have rustwater accumulating on the bottom exterior of the bottles.

Biggest haul was the Mid 90's old-school Very Old Barton 6yr Age Stated "Squat" liters and 750s. Promised off most of them to buddies but going to trade a few off for some other stuff I've been trying to get.

A hardcore "hunter" has kinda been offering lots of guidance via text. Dude had 4-5k bottles in storage... is like a living encyclopedia of bourbon history ("Is there a small dimple on the lower left side?.... What it distilled in bardstown or frankfort?.... etc"). Been very interesting to dive in and learn about. The historical side of things really has me interested. (Not to mention it's cheap hobby.. that whole table of hooch was like $200  )

Heading back out with a couple buddies Saturday deeper into the ghetto shops of Memphis. Will see what we can unearth.

I am very interested in the Black Maple Hill 16 Year. Is it worth the price?
No. Especially not the new crap that is made in Oregon. The old stuff was really good, but has gotten ridiculously expensive and isn't worth it. The in between stuff was good and has gotten way overpriced because of how good the old stuff was. The new stuff is garbage, I'd rather drink tap water in Flint
