IMO - Brett Favre doesn't want to be a Jet. (1 Viewer)

I think Favre:(b) Has little confidence in the play calling. I mean he looked somewhat enthusiastic 1st game but last week against the Pats it went out of his eyes. Not (just) the losing thing, but not being allowed to try to win the way he believes they should. Three runing plays from inside the 3 yard line or something like that, no?Of course, they were 4-12 for a reason.
This might be what Favre is thinking, just like he thought the Packers would beg to have him come back.Something to consider...Everyone is asking why the Jets didn't put the ball in Favre's hands in that series.Maybe we should be asking why Mangini and Co. don't trust Favre with the ball in that series.Favre can force things and throw picks...a big no-no in the redzone. To be effective in the redzone, he'd have to know the WRs' pre-snap route reads down pat because he won't have the yardage cushion or time to watch the routes develop like he would mid-field. If he doesn't have a good grasp of the playbook yet, I can see them being gunshy about putting it in his hands in that situation.

People on the "Brett Favre is not happy" bandwagon are crazy for thinking that. The expectations are Favre are high and for a good reason. The guy can play and still play at a high level. I have been fortunate enough to see every Jets game this year, living in Wisconsin, and there have been a few glowing reasons why the Jets are 1-2 right now and none of the reasons involve Brett Favre.

People talk about Lane Kiffen being in trouble of losing his job... where is the outcry for getting Mangini out of New York. My god is the play calling horrific. Are the WR's able to get down the field at all? Last night I saw one of the few "vintage" Favre plays when he hit Coles late in the game for the long reception. Quick slants, screens, throwing it up when single coverage is present. I understand this is the Jets and the offense is run different however that was when Pennington/Clemens were in town.

I have seen discussions in here about how Favre does not know the playbook. Fine, he has ran the offense for a very short time but Mangini and the coaching have to account for what Favre brings to the table as well. He is not a dump off passer like Pennington... Favre can air it out. As much as Favre needs to learn the playbook, Mangini and staff need to learn Favre's capabilities and use them.

Lastly, along with the playcalling, where is the offensive line? Why is Favre taking 5 and 7 step drops for on 1st and 10 or 2nd and 5 and having to find the dump off because the line broke down? Thomas Jones is seeing the problem to because his rushing stats are not where they could be. I understand the defense was on the field a long time last night as well but they could not stop anything either.

The Brett Favre experiment is working but I think having Favre as the QB is exposing how crappy the Jets offense is and how bad the playcalling really is. Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and even Philip Rivers would not be having much success in that offense.
I agree with this post the most in this thread but especially the bolded parts. You can speculate to how Favre "feels" all you want but look at the play of the team. The offensive line has been lackluster these last 2 games, and I agree with the playcalling being pretty average. LIke this poster said, get the offensive line playing better, then run some plays to take advantage of all that talent on offense. Even though there was a lot of points scored by San Diego last night I thought the defense looked serviceable. The pass rushers did ok and they stopped the run ok. The just gave up critical third downs from dinks and dunks and missed tackles. There is room for improvement, but the O-Line, playcalling, and defense needs to be better before anything can be blamed on Favre.

I've got no sympathy for Favre. You could see this coming from a mile away once it was determined that he was going to end up on the Jets.

Not retiring was the worst decision he has made in his career, and he's going to regret it for the rest of his life.
I wish I had the authority to delete stupid posts.
You do.
That is one of the more intelligent posts in the thread. TIA
Thank you.

The problem I have here is that it's always spun the other way though. Favre is always thought of as the guy that automatically makes the team better. Add him to your team, everyone instantly improves. And many also said Greg Jennings wouldn't do anything because Favre 'made' him.

I don't know. Doesn't seem like we can all have it both ways.

I wouldn't say he is phoning it in, but his body language is very telling right now. I said that weeks ago. He just doesn't look excited at all out there. Just like someone who has a hard time getting over a girl or boyfriend who dumped them and cannot understand why, I think Favre has got to be just flabbergasted at how the Packers had no problem moving on without him. He has that jilted look about him. Seriously.
That is a great description. And I know other greats have played for other teams at the end of their careers. But at least they looked like they were trying.
I agree. Great description. And his comments also indicated that he feels jilted. The "call me after 16" wins crack. Everything. As for the playbook issue, it has been said in the past that Favre was not a quick learner of the playbook. He played in Green Bay all those years running essentially the same offense. Nes coaches adjusted to him once he became "The Man". Now he has to learn a new system. It will take him time.

I'm seeing GB fans in here piling on and I'm not a big fan of it. In the early 90's Favre did make the Packers. You'd better bet your ### he did. Without Favre the Packers would probably still just be a team of legends from the very distant past. He "made" a lot of careers while in GB. I won't forget that.

That said, I think Favre is a pretty simple guy. I believe he was thinking Green Bay would always keep a spot for him if he wanted to come back because of everything he'd done. When he learned they were moving on he probably thought they'd at least give him his freedom to choose where he wanted to go as a way of saying thank you for all those great years and all the money he made them. He figured he could go to Minnesota the next day and they'd be favored for a SB. He's got a big ego and who wouldn't if they were Brett Favre? GB taught him a hard lesson that no matter who you are or what you've done, it's a business.

Favre's ego pushed him to take the roll in NY. I've got to believe he hates it there, like Randy Johnson hated it there for the Yankees, but his pride kept him going. But his pride has gotten him over his head. He's an old dog trying to learn new tricks now. It's not going to end pretty.

As much as I understand the business side of the NFL, and how ruthless it can be (and TT is ruthless in GB), and that Aaron Rodgers did deserve the ball, talking #### about Favre isn't in my vocabulary too often. As a Packer fan, I owe way too much to the guy to start doing that.

This next game is the big one. I don't know anyone that really expected the Jets to be anything other than 1-2 at the beginning of the season. There may have been a glimmer of hope after Brady went down, but the key to the season for them is being 2-2 going into the break.Arizona ByeCincinnati at Oakland Kansas_City at Buffalo St._LouisWith that schedule it is very possible that they end up at 6-3 before things start getting tough again. The Arizona game is huge for them and could really be the difference between having a chance at squeaking in the playoffs or not.
hmm - is he a buy candidate with that schedule?
 - as a Jet fan my highest expectation was 2-2 going into the bye - huge game vs the Cards this week. If you need a QB Favre may be a very good buy low!
:lmao: As a Jets fan:1) I fully expected to sit here at 1-2 with a Big Learning curve - It wasn't just Favre but really 1/3 new starters overall.2) No matter what it was a good move for the Jets, they weren't winning with what they had so, why not roll the dice. It's not like it's some crazy Redskin deal that ties them up for years. At the end of the season they're in the same boat looking for a QB and hopefully the younger guys learn a thing or 2 from Favre. As for Favre - Everyone has their opinions but, it is a long road and a long season, that was known and again, it was pretty much expected that they would be 1-2 right now. - Sounds to me like practices have been a lot of fun and the players have all said the right things... Last night was the 1st ***** in the armor at all from my perspective, up until then things seemed to be on course. As for body language, I think that was a tough game and any QB wouldn't look so happy after that.... With winning comes a lot more smiles. This time last year a ton of people pretty much gave up on Eli Mannig as a viable NFL QB at all so, this doesn't surprise me.Yes, huge game this week though.

When will Favre stop getting a free pass? People were saying Favre is a "Legend", the greatest QB ever, etc. and now it is the team and coaching staff's fault that he looks average. You can't have it both ways.

I have watched every game Favre has played as a Packer and his performance last night should not surprise anyone. Favre is good for 3-5 games like that every year. He also has 3 or 4 GREAT games in him yet. That is Brett Favre, you have to take the good with the bad. I think what Jets fans have to worry about is if they are getting the Mike Sherman version of Favre rather than the Holmgrem/McCarthey version.

The problem with your first statement is two fold. 1. The packers have been playing since the '20s.

2. Ron Wolf built that team of the '90s and Favre was only a piece of the puzzle. Reggie White was the heart of that team and I would say the biggest factor to their success. After Reggie left the Packer's domination ended even though Favre remained for almost a decade.

Your second statement is just calling Favre stupid.

Where did I call him stupid? I said he was simple. There's a big difference. "Simple" is one of the major reasons Brett Favre is as big as he is. I can relate to a guy like Favre much better than I can relate to a guy like Brady. The NFL could use more simple like that imo.

Funny but, as a Jets fan, I never put Favre on that pedastal of Greatest ever. Was never a Huge Favre fan honestly. To me he was an upgrade over Pennington or put it this way, a guy with a higher overall ceiling since we were all sick over Chad being game planned on half the field. A decent roll of the dice.Again, A no brainer move for the Jets with little to lose, Unless people thought thje Jets were going far with Chad and Brett is bringing them down, it's still "fun" IMO with the hopes of getting a lot better as the year goes on. It's not like the Jets are on the hook for $$$ for the next 5 years here...

And I agree with your comment that the Favre we saw last night we have seen before, that's why the jump to conclusions about how he feels, like this thread makes me laugh a bit but, I knew it was coming and that's why I hoped he'd avoid having a "Favre Game" cuz I knew people would think that he should be the Great Brett Favre right off the bat or they would come running to slay him.

He wanted another shot at the Super Bowl, which was why he wanted to play for the Vikings.
:lmao:
:excited: Pretty ridiculous to think that if already have a good running game, good o-line, and good defense that adding a good QB will give you a shot at a Super Bowl. :lmao:
Don'tcha kinda need WR's who can catch the ball?Hell they are dropping the easy passes from TJ and Frerotte, how would they have handled the Favre bullets?

 What games are you watching? There were no easy passes from TJ and the only drop (leading to an INT) I can think of last week was when GF threw behind Berrian.

Shiancoe still can't catch.
Berrian should have had that one too, ended up in an INT.
Berrian definitely should have had that. The Vikings receivers are up to their usual. The pass was a litle behind him but he has to catch it.
That Minny receiving core has got to be most biggest waste of talent (the avg amount they have) in the NFL
A sampling of these posts tell me the QB isn't the only problem in Minny.

I guess we disagree.

Whole lotta BS in here.

Brett Favre has lost "it" and he didn't lose it since becoming a member of the Jets...he lost it while he was still a Packer. At the end of last season Favre was no longer the Brett that the fans of Green Bay fell in love with and still support. He looked old in the cold of Chicago and was carried through a playoff win against Seattle by Ryan Grant's crazy ground game and a huge performance by the defense. The following week he was a bust in the freezing cold of Lambeau during the NFC Championship game. This was the final nail in his coffin and the reason why the organization did almost nothing to talk him out of retiring or to bring him back once he changed his mind.

So talk about playbooks, personnel, or an adjustment period all you want. IMO he just doesn't have "it" anymore - it's that simple.

He does have the same "Why am I doing this anymore?" demeanor that he had in the NFC Championship game.

I read an article from a local paper about some comments that the charter pilot (that flew Favre from GB to Miss on the nite before the trade) made. It was an article that was emailed to me so I can't verify if it was legit. If true, it is intresting in lite of the discussion going on here.

The pilot described the mood on the plane as somber. He said it was apparent at that time that a trade was going to be made and that nobody on the plane seemed very happy about it.

Personally I am a Favre fan, but a bigger Packer fan. I can understand the Packers position on Favre. It is hard to imagine that the Packers would be better off with Rogers over Favre, but it might just be true.

Whole lotta BS in here.Brett Favre has lost "it" and he didn't lose it since becoming a member of the Jets...he lost it while he was still a Packer. This was the final nail in his coffin and the reason why the organization did almost nothing to talk him out of retiring or to bring him back once he changed his mind.So talk about playbooks, personnel, or an adjustment period all you want. IMO he just doesn't have "it" anymore - it's that simple.
And I'd say I'll bet he would have found "it" or something close to "it" in a hurry if he'd become a Viking. He probably would have done pretty well with a home game or 2 in the dome come playoff time.

I think he should actually be laughing his head off and having a blast while his team loses two tough games in a row.

You guys are right, he's a broken man.

2- I'm a firm believer that Reggie White would not have been a Packer sans Favre. Ron Wolf alone was not going to get Reggie to move to Wisconsin.
I don't think its a huge issue, but just noting that Favre had only played onepartial year (approx. 13 games in '92) when Ron Wolf signed White. I don't believe Favre had any pull at that time, and as a young, reckless and infamous party-boy, I doubt he had much influence on White. Even in their later years, the two reportedly never really connected.

Very possible. Even Brett at 75% is still a solid starting QB...he's just not a top 10 signal caller anymore. Jet fans expecting him to single-handedly carry that team to a division title are probably going to be disappointed. As a Viking he had a shot but that's exactly why he wasn't shopped there.

:lmao: Pretty ridiculous to think that if already have a good running game, good o-line, and good defense that adding a good QB will give you a shot at a Super Bowl.
Don'tcha kinda need WR's who can catch the ball?Hell they are dropping the easy passes from TJ and Frerotte, how would they have handled the Favre bullets?
:P What games are you watching? There were no easy passes from TJ and the only drop (leading to an INT) I can think of last week was when GF threw behind Berrian.
Um, Vicente Shiancoe down? (Ok, ok, he finally caught ONE this past weekend...)

Here's a question I've been wanting to have answered:

Could Team A (the Jets) retain the rights to Farve (as a player, assuming he retires) yet Team B (Green Bay) sign him to the 'abassador'-type front office/PR role that GB previously mentioned? Could the deals overlap? Are they mutually exclusive? Can one team own a player's playing rights while another team employs the actual (retired) player?

Farve plays this year for the Jets, announces his retirement after Week 17. He goes on the reserve/retired list. He tells the Jets he wants to sign on with the Packers for the 'ambassador' job previously offered. If the contracts conflict, the Jets release Farve. Once released, he's a free agent and could sign with any team (Minnesota?).

Just something I've been kicking around in my head.

I guess I should have lumped the TE's in with the WR's. I just try to never think of Visanthe Shiancoe.

I don't think it was J-E-T-S FANS but Favre fans and the media.

i think it's more that he's still learning the offense rather than going through the motions. he's tentative and unsure because of the new players, terminology and environment.

tough to look real confident when you're still being taught the offense on the sideline during the game

:banned: - as a Jet fan my highest expectation was 2-2 going into the bye - huge game vs the Cards this week. If you need a QB Favre may be a very good buy low!
:goodposting: As a Jets fan:1) I fully expected to sit here at 1-2 with a Big Learning curve - It wasn't just Favre but really 1/3 new starters overall.2) No matter what it was a good move for the Jets, they weren't winning with what they had so, why not roll the dice.
:goodposting:

I'm not a Vikings fan (or Jets or Packers), but Favre in Minny woulda been sweet. They might've been my pick to win it all. That said, I believe Gus is a huge improvement over Jackson, & if the Vikes can get things rolling on offense, they're going to be tough to beat.

I agree 100%..he looks like he is ticked off at himself for NOT taking the $20mil buyout from GB..he's one-n-done in NY..and the offense looks just like it did with Chad here, i.e., dink-n-dunk ..not saying Favre has to throw 40 times/game, but they've got to use his play-action more... his mobility is something that should be used by NYJ as well..but, when I watch the Jets, I think of the Billy Joel song Piano man - 'he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke, but there's someplace that he'd rather be'.i.e., back in Miss, moving his 4,500,000 acre farm counting his $20mil GB would have given him to be a 'spokesman' for them..porr Jets fans...

While I think the Jets can be better with Favre than they were with Pennington (Jury is still out on that), there is no doubt that Miami is much better with Pennington at the helm than they would have been. Jets are fortuante to have got Miami in week one when Miami wasn't entirely healthy and both QBs were adjusting to new surroundings.

That was noticed 3 weeks ago by The Onion. :boxing:

"I always told myself I'd know when it was time to walk away," the guaranteed first-ballot Hall of Famer told reporters at the Jets practice facility. "But after 17 or 18, you know, practices as the quarterback of this team, I'm just tired, mentally and physically."

Favre's decision to sit out last Thursday's preseason game against the Eagles sparked rumors that Favre was already reconsidering finally hanging up his cleats again. Favre said that, although he had not yet made a decision, he and his wife Deanna had been discussing his possible retirement since he returned from retirement in early August.

I was just wondering why I never hear anybody talk about how chad pennington hasn't had time to learn his new playbook.

The body language of a 38 year old man who had flown across country to engage in a contact sport was less than peppy when playing on an ankle he painfully rolled over and sprained, an ankle that he has had chronic trouble with and was considering more surgery on, color me shocked.

BTW his Q.B. rating is higher this year than his lifetime average. On a painful ankle against a desperate team which was a preseason favorite, on the road, his Q.B. rating in that game exceeded his career average. I agree Favre is experiencing culture shock, but he is producing. If the jets need a scapegoat they could look elsewhere, like their other free agent acquisitions who are underperforming, their R.B. who seemsonly sporadically motivated, their petulent recieving star who has sulked since Favre's arrival, or their rookie phenom who apparently can't tackle or even lineup correctly.

Really NOTHING to lose... Favre didn't get some whacky 60 mil 6 year deal or anything.

It's the media and fans all around them that Set up incredible expectations and then jumped off that Bandwagon after 3 weeks.....

I'm still sitting here seeing pretty much what I expected at 1-2 - Granted, I would have liked a better showing on MNF but, the there's a lot more than Favre that dissapointed me in that game.

Don't worry about us... It's a team game.Jets needed to find a long term answer at QB regardless, This is just a roll of the dice for 1 year.

I'd make that same move today - Unless you have a sure thing better QB for me right now that they should have grabbed?

Chad made decent coin and wasn't the Long term answer either - so $$$ wise, it wasn't that crazy a move..... They also needed to move on.

You want to cry for a team - How about the teams that spent high coin on the FA wr's or how about if the Jets drafted Leinart like a lot of people in NY wanted - or signed Shaub.... You know all the deals that cost a lot of money for a lot of time that didn't pan out....

In today's Game I'd never cry for a team that takes a 1 year flyer on a player with a 1 year contract - It's the team that lock up players for Many Millions for many years that I cry for when it doesn't work out....

Jets might have a young QB in Rhatliff - Maybe he learns a thing or two from Favre and wins the job next year??? We'll see, regardless, the Jets are and will still be in the market for a LT QB.

* YOU WANT TO KNOW THE TRUTH? As Ditka said, I'd also put Vernon Gholston up there - though he is changing positions and has a long way to go... But, a one year deal for Favre doesn't really worry me much - that's fodder for the media and outsider fans who love "the storylines" cuz he's the "name guy......Enjoy.

Ummm...QB rating aside...to say he is producing after a game where his 2 INTs were very costly and a huge part of why they got so behind is a bit out there.Im not saying other people did not mess up in that game...but lets not just look at rating and act as if none of the loss was on Favre.

I agree that he looks like he's just going through the motions at this point. But that's just because he's losing IMO. He looked pretty enthusiastic in the win vs Miami in week 1.

But I think it's funny how everyone is just writing the Jets off after a close loss to New England (many people's AFC SB pick) and a loss at San Diego (an AFC SB pick for many others). Meanwhile, New England has two wins- against KC and the Jets. And San Diego has two losses- to Denver and Carolina. The Jets lost to the teams they were supposed to lose to. You can't say the same about San Diego or New England.

Favre needs to show some energy in the next six games:

Arizona

Cincinnati

@ Oakland

Kansas City

@ Buffalo

St Louis

Because that was my argument. Gotcha.Reading comprehension may not be your best thing.

I don't know if he doesn;t want to be a Jet. In fact, if anything I would put money on the fact that he'll be a Jet next year too. But what I do think he is a victim of is fatigue, mental and emotional. This is not to say that he didn't bring this upon himself in large part. But I believe he thought that the re-entry process into the NFL was going to be similar to Jordan's when he re-entered the NBA. He'd fax a letter to the NFL office "I'm back"...and everything would go back to the way it was.

And so when the entire ordeal played itself out, by the time Favre got back to playing football - he simply was fatigued from the entire circus that ensued. And not just that - but immersing yourself in a new environment, new team, new playbook, new everything...he doesn't have that extra spunk.

The thing is though, I think he'll recognize that he would want to give the Jets one full year of preparation and acclimation before packing it in. He's not played poorly...but he's not been the lift provider the Jets hoped for.

Good stuff guys. But I will come to Favre's defense in that I still see him getting excited and running down the field with his receivers. I still see very much the same dude that was fun as hell to watch in GB. Bottom line is this: HE'S OLD! Holy crap, I don't know what folks expect. For our Jets, he improves our offense by a large margin IMO, but you won't see that for a few weeks yet. The Jets are one of those teams that by the end of the year will come around. The Jenkins/Gholston bit I agree with, but it's not like the Jets aren't loaded with youthful talent. Once these young kids start to really grasp some of the nuances of the NFL game, they will come around. Rhodes is already there. I love him. And Cotch is the same, just wish they would move him around more. Perhaps that'll come as Brett gets a better handle on this offense. Keller will get more involved too. He's a great talent.

As a Jets fan, my worry about Favre is way down on the list compared to my worry about Kris Jenkins - The defense looked good with him and revolves around a 3-4 NT - THAT guy got paid AND got years - Without him, I don't think it matters who the QB is. As Ditka said, I'd also put Vernon Gholston up there - though he is changing positions and has a long way to go... But, a one year deal for Favre doesn't really worry me much - that's fodder for the media and outsider fans who love "the storylines" cuz he's the "name guy......Enjoy.
Absolutely great posting - all this hype never came from Jet fans. A real Jet fan is not cocky or even confident....a true Jet fan is waiting for the bottom to fall out! I love he Favre gamble not just because he gives the Jets the best chance of winning this year - but it forced them to turn the page on Chad which was not working either. Give it a year or 2 with Favre and develop Ratliff or KC - if neither develop then we are in the same position anyway. I am more excited about young players like Cotchery, Revis, Rhodes, Lowery - I am most worried about Jenkins (he is the most important player on the team this side of the qB) and Gholston (ton of money to invest in potential). With the Brady injury there is a window and its too early to see if the Jets can take advantage of it - but I think if you poll true JEt fans you will be shocked at how few even think they will make the playoffs.
I think the Jets have as much young talent as I can remember: Mangold, Brick, Leon, Cotchery, Chasni, Gholston, Harris, Revis, Rhodes and Lowery all look like solid to above average NFL starters and they are all under 5 yrs in the league. Thats a very nice youthful base IMO - if Favre can drive the bus and develop the offense it may be a fun ride - going to take time though.
