The deer usually come around this side hill to avoid having to cross the field in the background of that pic. I haven’t hunted over here alot yet. Still trying to figure it out. It’s hard this time of year though, people have been hunting since first of October. The rut is over. Older bucks are basically nocturnal nowWhy did you choose to put your blind in the location that it is?
Water nearby?
Deer path?
Wind direction?
Now you tell meI wouldn't post pictures on the internet, now the deer will know where you are
Yes, but you can’t hunt on sundays in my stupid stateDo you have off tomarrow?
Running gear. Getting ready to head out.
Can’t you also not buy more than a 12-pack of beer from the grocery store, or something crazy like that?Yes, but you can’t hunt on sundays in my stupid stateDo you have off tomarrow?
You can buy as much as you want. But you can only buy so many oz per purchase and walk it out then come back. I think it’s more than a 12 but less than a 12 and 6 lolCan’t you also not buy more than a 12-pack of beer from the grocery store, or something crazy like that?Yes, but you can’t hunt on sundays in my stupid stateDo you have off tomarrow?
elk and its not close take that to the bank brohansWhat's ur favorite wild game to eat?
I'm partial to Antelope.....you take care of it properly, it's delicious.
i was a bow hunter for a long time and got into the whole keep it simple aspect of it hunting with what would now be a pretty valuable bear recurve for a long time but I got old and then it was a compound to help my shoulder and then it was no more hunting when most of the guys in my camp left to chase tatanka in the big hunt in the sky so now i fly fish a lot and think of them and it does the trick but in truth it ruins you for every other kind of fishing you just get addicted to water that moves and then thats all she wrote take that to the bank bromigomy thing is that i shot a lot of stuff when i was in my teens through late thirties it was like a thing and then one year i was in the woods had a little fork buck walk past me and i thought jeez im gonna kill this thing do i really enjoy the killing or do i enjoy the being out here and i decided it was the later so now i spend my outdoor time fly fishing because you can catch and release with a rod and get the whole thrill of the hunt deal but you dont kill anything and there aint no catch a release with a 30 06 if you know what i mean take that to the bank brochachothis is exactly how i am when i hunt now i just like to be near my family that is left and spend the time in the woods good for you and i wish you luck take that to the bank brohanToday…40-50 I guess. What percentage of the time are you on your phone in the blind?
I don’t really care to kill a deer anymore. I killed my share in my lifetime.
I could’ve killed 2 nice bucks in rifle season. I’m out to relax and enjoy being out here. If I see any deer it’s gravy
I no longer hunt but all my friends back in Michigan say this. Best thing about being out is getting to hang with old friends, their adult kids, grandkids, et al.
Probably moving back to the mitten at some point and I'll take up bow hunting again.
I've never fly fished but I loved that movie A River Runs Through It. Read a lengthy article about Ted Williams that went deep into it. Reminds me a lot of bow hunting, there is a connection between you and the implement, there's a genuine skill....different mindset than long rifle hunting. I did my fair share of the latter, enjoyed it, but a compound bow is a much bigger challenge.
I know catch n release has been in vogue for many decades but I kinda like eating what I catch (or kill.)
Except for the occasional donation from a nephew back home, rarely have venison. There's a pretty cool hole in the wall in Brooklyn Heights called Henry's End that has a seasonal game menu, that's the only place I've found it in NYC (even then it's hit or miss if they are featuring it month to month.)
Elk is delicious.....when we are camping we like make "elk nugs". Chop up steak, cook high heat in cast iron skillet, liberally with ur fave seasoning....I prefer spade L ranch...super goodelk and its not close take that to the bank brohansWhat's ur favorite wild game to eat?

I've done 99% blind/tree stand hunting in the deep south. There's not a whole lot of area in the places I've hunted where you could see very far from just sitting on the ground (or on a stool). Thickness of brush/terrain and lack of hills. There are some areas here that are hilly, but I've not personally hunted them. I'd imagine stalk hunting might be a bit more lucrative in those areas. I can think of a couple of regions in my immediate area that are "hilly" but everything else is pretty flat and thick with brush, etc.Stand vs stalk hunting
Back east it seems like tree stands and blinds are the primary method of hunting while out west stalk hunting seems to be the standard.
Is this due to terrain or tradition or something else?
I’ve never hunted out of state. Around here we also “still hunt” which can be a great way to kill a deer and is way less boring than sitting on a stand. It is basically sneaking very slowly, stopping and watching. Youre not going to sneak up on a white tail in its bed, but you can cover ground and catch them feeding or moving around.Stand vs stalk hunting

Are you close to Pittsburgh?Back at it this morning
35, no wind. This has been the mildest late season weather I can remember

Anybody into hunting? This thread was the closest I could find for it. Archery in particular, but i also get out and do some rifle and muzzleloader. Mostly hunt white tails, but get out and do a little turkey hunting too. Spring turkey season is a few weeks away and numbers look good, so i plan on trying to get out for a few mornings before the ticks get bad.
I hunt mature animals and pass everything else. Something about it recharges my soul in a way i can't get anyway else. And it's very tasty and nice to have a full freezer. I respect and use as much of the animal as possible.Anybody into hunting? This thread was the closest I could find for it. I want to hunt but I’m a city boy and don’t know how to get into it.
I have been considering getting a decent bow for the wife and I to try archery. We can reuse the “ammo” and can do it in our backyard. There are A LOT of choices for bows and I just haven’t had time to go down that rabbit hole.
Yep. Not into spring turkey though. My dad was a trout fisherman and we spent our springs fishing instead.Anybody into hunting?
Find a decent used one fora good price imo if you’re just starting out and go from thereThere are A LOT of choices for bows and I just haven’t had time to go down that rabbit hole.
Yeah, that's the tradeoff. I used to steelhead fish in the spring, but got into turkey hunting and it hooked me (no pun intended).Yep. Not into spring turkey though. My dad was a trout fisherman and we spent our springs fishing instead.Anybody into hunting?
What state are you in?
I have 2 ladder stands setup and an API climberHang and hunt style is my primary method with either a tree saddle or lone wolf depending on the kind of trees I'm in. Food for the soul getting out there like that harvest or not
I remember pre smart phones just sitting and watching everything, nothing to occupy your mind other than your own thoughts for hours. I stare at my phone more than I'd like in the woods, but i made it a point this year to try and look a lot less.I have 2 ladder stands setup and an API climberHang and hunt style is my primary method with either a tree saddle or lone wolf depending on the kind of trees I'm in. Here I thought you were in a bind and I was going to have to get my codpiece out of the wash to holler at my boy.
To the rescue!
Like you tripped into something and got caught in a loop that kept you in a Philly thread for eternity or some **** like that.
Same. Archery for whitetails and spring turkey are also top my list. Where in the country are you located?I'll be heading up to the cabin and hunt Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
I've hunted and fished many different species. Spring turkey and archery for whitetail are at the top of the list. Nothing beats the gobbling at first light on a calm spring morning.
Nice. I'm up the U.P. have a cabin and 250 acres in Southern Menomonee County. I'm not sure how the ticks are closer to Milwaukee, but they're already terrible up here. Deer ticks are getting awful. Permitherin'd my clothes this morning. Just a heads up they might my pretty bad in Central Wisconsin.Wisconsin. Live in the Milwaukee suburbs. Have shy of 30 acres and small cabin in Central WI. Princeton/Wautoma area for those local.

You're in big buck territory. We do pretty good, very high numbers, but really big racks can be few and far between.
After missing a few years I'm finally going to be able to get out and turkey hunt this year. I don't even care of i see a turkey or not, just looking forward to some quiet time in the woods. Finally have time Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. Looking very forward to this. Guessing i might be alone in this here, but if anyone else heads out good luck.gobble gobble.
Great post. I can definitely hunt longer and more often with the distraction and being able to work from a deer blind.I remember pre smart phones just sitting and watching everything, nothing to occupy your mind other than your own thoughts for hours. If you've seen the Sopranos there's that scene with Vito where he runs and gets a handy man job and looking at the time was this big treat, that's what it used to be like. I'd resist looking at my watch as long as possible for the reward of knowing what time it is. If you've never experienced it, it sounds odd I'm sure, but it seemed pretty universal with all my hunting buddies. Times have certainly changed.
Thank you, really looking forward to hearing that first morning gobble. Turkey numbers have really exploded in the last couple decades up here. We have a pretty high wolf population and that actually seems to help Turkey numbers. They seem to leave them alone and mostly focus on the deer, but what they also do is remove coyotes from the ecosystem and those are the turkey's biggest predator around here. Not so great having wolves around during deer season (I've had more than a few very close encountes, super cool animals, scary to hear them howl just before climbing out of a tree stand in the dark or walking up on them), but with turkeys it seems to be a good thing. After missing a few years I'm finally going to be able to get out and turkey hunt this year. Good luck. I used to be hard core into trukey hunting. Took years to get my first in the big woods in the Appalachian Mountians. I then got access to a local farm where turkeys appeared for the first time. With two years we were covered up with huge flocks. 5 years later they've prtty much vanished. I assumed the predators adapted. Hate to admit it, but I got spoiled and now I'm now interested in getting up at 3:45am to likely see nothing. I reserve that for deer hunting.
There's pros and cons forsure. Being able to stay connected allows for more time in woods with a busy schedule, but at the cost of the complete disconnect this type of activity used to provide. Being able to watch tickers, sports scores, answer emails, read articles makes sitting easier, but at the same time I used to do just fine without it.Great post. I'm surprised you're not running into ticks. Maybe the cold winter and little snow nuked them in the more inland locations. Either way, you're lucky, nasty little critters.I have so many turkeys carousing on my 8 acres there are literally zero ticks.
This time of year I make sure to have everything i wear into the woods soaked in permitherin. Bike clothes, hunting clothes, a set of work clothes. You guys are definitely ground zero for these things though. We've had deer ticks here for a few decades, but I'd say in the last 5ish years they've exploded to the point that if you don't wear some kind of protection you can expect some everytime you get into long grass. The ticks have been pretty bad here for years. Absolutely, it's an issue for everyone in the area, not just for people going into the woods and deep grass. It's been a steady increase for many years, but seems to be exponentially worse the last 5 or so. Changing climate conditions would be my guess as to why the steady increase. Couple links to show where they're at and how they're spreading. It's kind of scary. I had an aunt get Lyme years ago and it really messed up her joints. Outside of the northeast, northern Wisconsin and the southern Upper peninsula of Michigan are hot spots. They've begun spreading northeast at an increased rate aswell and are now being found near Marquette Michigan. I have to assume they're also going south and west from Wisconsin at the same rate. Why the explosion you think?
