Inglourious Basterds (1 Viewer)

I doesn't surprise me that people didn't like the Myers casting. It was a clear distraction from the movie that for some reason worked for me. I liked the levity with the character.
Tarantino has a history of excellent and unusual casting choices. The Meyers choice was particularly unsettling because Meyers is not just a famous comedian, he's a cultural icon. The Insider features some comedians in supporting roles that fit in better because they are not iconic.
Whatever. I agree with his choice for the role.

I'm not criticizing you. I Just thought someone else would have worked better.

It was like Jimmy Fallon's role in Band of Brothers. Passable on its own, but annoying in context of their careers.

Caught this movie the other day. Really enjoyed it. And there were some really good acting performances. Christoph Waltz was excellent as Col. Hans Landa.

Jew Killer
Bear Jew, BostonIs that scene on the DVD?
There isn't much deleted content on the Blu Ray...just three slightly longer versions of scenes that were already in the movie: The first card game at the bar (before the basterds get there), some film talk between Goebels and Shoshonna at the restaurant, and a different intro when the Nation's Pride movie starts up. I'm not sure if the DVD is any different. Was the Bear Jew in Boston scene filmed or just in a screenplay?I loved this movie, its not like anything I've seen from Tarantino before. I think he deserves credit for maturing. I was really afraid this would be QT indulging his most violent cinematic fantasies for two hours. He could inflict all imaginable violence on Nazi's and nobody would really have a problem with it. I was really impressed the way this movie was put together, with such palpable tension in so many scenes. His movies in the past have always been memorable for either shear shock value (cop in the trunk, the gimp) or the action/climax to the scene (a needle in the heart, slicing off an ear, lopping off a head). I'll remember this movie for the anxiousness I felt as each scene unfolded. Maybe it was out of respect for the subject matter, maybe he wanted to challenge himself, or maybe he just wanted to try something different. In any case I was blown away, I didn't know he had the ability to make this movie.
Very  As this film is scrutinized over the years it will be seen in a much higher light than what I have been reading in this thread. I think it's QT's best work for the things LC discusses above.

:lol:I didn't even know it was Myers until I read some of you #####ing about it, so I went back and watched again. Don't have a problem with him in the role. Didn't think he "overdid" it.

:lmao: I saw this in the theater, and when I saw his name in the credits as a guest star, I was like, "Interesting, didn't know he was in this," but I didn't even notice him in his role. The only actor who was any sort of detriment (albeit a tiny detriment) was B.J. Novak; he simply has zero range and is unable to disappear into a role. Thank goodness he had a pretty small role.

You're right. He didn't overact.

Novak is a lightweight, but it didn't hurt the movie for me.

got this as a Christmas present and just watched the blu-ray.

Like most of QT's stuff, it was really meh for me. I just don't love his work. I did like Pulp Fiction, but don't think it's even close to the all time classic that most consider it. (saw it once and could never see it again and go on with my life) the Kill Bill movies are ok to watch and Jackie Brown was solid. But overall, i just don't get it.

This movie just seemed really slow. Other than the violent parts, the whole thing just dragged and was an exercise in awkwardness. It was like the cut aways in Family Guy that just keep going a little bit longer just to see how long they can go.

Other than Pitt's Italian accent at the premiere, i wasn't really entertained.

SHould be nominated for Movie of the Year. I think once again that some people just don't get what QT is trying to do. He makes movies and this was a movie. Of course Aldo Rain and the basterds did not really kill Hitler but look at what QT does in this film.

He makes you question your own morality. Did you at any point when the Nazi was going to get his brains bashed in, did you feel an ounce of compassion or want to turn your head for a brief moment so you didn't have ot watch it? They're Nazis, we should be celebrating them getting their tails kicked but at the same time you kinda get sickened just a tad.

Then the French actress is exposed as sort of walking the fence but in the end she gets whats coming to her. The show stopper or scene stealer is of course Christopher Walz who plays Col. Hans Lander and he will get nominated for best actor/supporting actor, doubt he wins but he deserves the nod.

The opening scene in the French dairy farmer's house, priceless dialogue back and forth, great scene. The movie is wildly entertaining and wife and I thoroughly loved this, definitely top5 for the 2009 year. I've seen a lot of films that are supposed to get nominated, IB is right up there at the top of the list.

Cinematography, Costume, Lighting, Script, Director, Actor/Supporting Actor...should easily get nominated for 5-7 Oscars. Loved it, and anyone that didn't like it, I understand where your POV is but I think true QT fans must have loved this and QT just keeps getting better at making movies.
I understand most of of what you are saying, but I just don't agree with the last bit. To me it just feels like he is starting to make the same movie - great dialouge/cheesy action/revenge movie. Granted other great directors still leave their 'stamps' on their movies and you can usually tell by their style who made it, but it doesn't seem to me like Tarantino is evolving that much.
:lmao:

my brother told me this movies is 80% sub titles. true?
Probably more like 50%, but I think it's well done and adds to the movie. It doesn't feel like you are watching a foreign film if you are worried about that.I watched it last night and thought it was decent. There were certainly times where it dragged, but some of that was probably due to the extended version I was watching.

I'd be interested in seeing a list of your top 10 or 20 favorite modern movies to compare.

I thought the way QT used the various foreign languages and subtitles added a ton to this movie. The opening scene when the dialogue switches to English, then back to French, was sweet because it played into the plot.

Cool. I can see that we share some common ground with movies. I'm surprised you think that the non-violent scenes in Basterds dragged. To me, there's more violence in Tarantino's script than there is in most violent films.

yeah, but 80% of the rest of the movie is just 3-6 people sitting around a table. Brutal.

i can deal with dialogue(the first scene at the farm was awesome). But the other scenes dragged on way too long. The scene in the bar was at least 10 minutes too long. It was just brutal.

I think the scene in the bar was exactly as long as it needed to be and I think that scene is one of the best I've seen in any movie in the last five years.

I take it dialogue isn't your thing. For me, good dialogue is one of the only things in movies that I care about.
I love dialogue but I found about 3/4 of the dialogue in IB boring and forced.
 I was actually kind of excited about the beginning scene in the farmhouse... dialogue was pretty good stuff.

After about 30 more minutes, I was ready to turn it off.

No offense, but I can't believe some of you bought this movie. Can I get your top tens?

Best movie I watched this year along with Adaptation. and No Country.

Like Clerks as much for a totally different reason, but a classic none the less(recently rewatched it and it came to mind, doesn't really apply otherwise).

I couldn't disagree more. I think that if you remove the "Sgt. Stiglitz" tag and the voiceover by Sam Jackson I'd have a hard time identifying this as a Tarantino film. This is notable for how different it is from his other movies, he's evolved quite a bit IMO.

Trainspotting

Pulp Fiction

Pan's Labyrinth

The Royal Tennenbaums

Cool Hand Luke

Full Metal Jacket

For those of you who didn't like this movie, name five better movies from this past year...just curious.

:lmao: Magnificent scene in a magnificent movie. :lmao: :lmao:

Really good movie. I meant to see this in the theater, but I just didn't get around to it. I bought it without seeing it first. I have like all of QT's movies, so I figured I would take a chance. If I knew about the sub titles, I may have never watched this movie. I always feel like I shouldn't have to read while watching a movie. But, I really liked the German and French dialogue. It helped make the movie.

Great film and I highly recommend this one. I think it should be one of the 10 films nominated for best picture.

Just got done watching it. I cannot think of a better movie I had seen in 2009. This was an amazing film.

Although I agree about BJ Novak. He obviously can write, but he sucks as an actor.

I'm not in the least bit offended. What's in your movie collection? Proud of all of them? I have a hard time writing top ten movie lists. Easier to come up with a top 100. Here's a first draft:

1. Goodfellas

2. The Godfather

3. Full Metal Jacket

4. Pulp Fiction

5. The Usual Suspects

6. Downfall

7. Apocalypse Now

8. Fight Club

9. Raging Bull

10. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

And?
Don't play coy, bud.

I'm not sure there were 5 better films this year.
this is my point...if you can't name five better films, you're probably being a bit over critical...expecting all time greats like Goodfellas or Raging Bull is ridiculous. This was easily one of the best films this year, I can't even begin to comprehend the argument against this film being a great film.

I thought it was good, and in looking at it compared to other 2009 films then yes, it was "very good."

got this as a Christmas present and just watched the blu-ray. But overall, i just don't get it.This movie just seemed really slow. Other than the violent parts, the whole thing just dragged and was an exercise in awkwardness. It was like the cut aways in Family Guy that just keep going a little bit longer just to see how long they can go. Other than Pitt's Italian accent at the premiere, i wasn't really entertained.
I will take your Blu-Ray, if you would like to get rid of it.TIAYour pal,Smoov
PS - Will cover shipping. I'm just talkin here.

For those of you who didn't like this movie, name five better movies from this past year...just curious.
I'm guessing this wont get answered...mostly because there weren't five better films.
I don't know if I even watched 5 'new' films in 2009 but I'll give it a shot. Some of these go back to 2008.No Country for Old MenWatchmenRevolutionary RoadIn BrugesThe WrestlerThe Dark KnightMilkMichael Clayton

Most of those were not made in 2009, but I get your drift. That is a fine list. But I am shocked that you think The Watchmen is a better movie than Basterds. I read (and own) The Watchmen graphic novel, and I enjoyed 300. So I was essentially the target audience for The Watchmen. But Basterds is a lot better and will be remembered long after The Watchmen fades into obscurity.

If you trot out a turd and then ask me "Name me five turds that are better than this one" and I can't, that doesn't change the fact that it is still a turd.
