Introducing Myself (1 Viewer)

@GregoryLKellogg

Footballguy
Been awhile so I thought I would reintroduce myself to the Shark Tank. My name is Greg Kellogg. I used to run a site (komments.com). I also used to write for several sites including this one.

In 2016 I stepped away from fantasy football. Then I started playing again in 2022. In 2023 I started doing a podcast.

I am retired so I have time and will be happy to get involved again though I will not be writing articles again. Now most of my thoughts are on X (Twitter - @GregoryLKellogg). If I can help anyone with anything reach out!

Welcome back. Just curious, why no more writing?
I’m 68 years old. When I was writing I did it from a statistical perspective which required a lot of research into past performances, trends and projections. I would take about four hours to write a single article.

I’m not interested in being paid for my work. So I opted to go the podcast route and just talk about what I see and think. Much easier and less time consuming. Plus doing a pod allows me to stay in touch with old friends.

I’m focused on the history of the hobby and individual’s paths in it right now. I really want to get Joe on to talk about how he went from the RSFF Usenet group to building FBG.

Welcome back.

One of your early articles, at least early for me, got me to really change the way I approached preparation for a fantasy draft and to take a much more analytical/practical approach. As I recall, it was called "Tiers of a Clown". For me at least it kind of lit that fuse that grew my obsession with the game and to look at various approaches to attacking a fantasy draft.

Thanks! I wish I had retained all those articles but especially my early podcasts with Gary Davenport on BTR. Would absolutely love to listen to our interview of Keenan Allen again!

Hey folks. Was just thinking that you might want to stop by my podcast tonight! I believe it starts before Cecil and Sigmund’s pod - we are starting at 7 PM ET. Would love to get feedback from everyone here. Go to X or YouTube and search for Thursday Checkdown - be as critical as you want. Cecil gave me a page and a half of notes to help me improve my show and I think Cecil and Sigmund are two of the best podcasters out there. In fact, if you’re a member of FBG, and you are not a regular viewer of The Audible podcast you are really missing out!

@Joe Bryant already posted a link to that podcast I believe.

Man did I let things get away from me. Will try to do better from this point forward. I would guess most of the FBG staff knows me but if you don’t, reach out. Just got back from the FFExpo and got to see three of my favorite FBGs - Joe, Bob and Tipp. Loved it.

I wanted to offer up a spot in my local league to some FBGs. I have three openings - first come, first served. It will be a live draft using the Sleeper App starting August 16 at 2 PM ET. (I think anyway - it’s definitely 1 PM Central). Pretty standard PPR league with no entry fee. If you’re interested, click the link below and take a team. But when the three teams are gone, that’s it.

I also wanted to thank Joey Wright for inviting me into the FootballGuys Bowl. Looking forward to competing with those of you who are involved in this!

Anyway, I plan on checking back here more regularly this year and if you post something I don’t see or respond to, hit me up on X (Twitter @GregoryLKellogg) and I’ll definitely get back to it.

Here’s the league link:

Man thank you. High praise. I appreciate it. If you go to one of the FFExpos, find me and remind me of this and I’ll get you a drink.

Depends on how your team is structured. At this point Worthy is the safer play - will Rice be suspended - if so for how long? But if your team needs a player that could put up top 5 numbers, that would appear to be Rice at this time. Most leagues I am choosing Worthy but I do have some Rice exposure.

A couple of reasons. First podcasting is way easier. I turn 70 in November. I stepped away altogether in 2016 and for five years didn't play, or consume content. I retired in 2019. My wife and I move to Thailand (were supposed to be there for a year) but Covid trapped us an extra four months. When we got back I decided I wanted to play again and Scott Fish was nice enough to put me in the SFB13. I heard about Bob Lung's FF Expo so I went to it as well. And I thought I would have been long forgotton but everyone has been so kind. Bob Harris was such a great mentor to me when I first started in this industry (early 90's) I decided to try and give back to some of the younger folks on the scene. So I started a podcast with The Sports Affiliation (JC and Iggy are great guys and believe in a positive approach). I could have come to Joe or Tony Holm and found a home but I didn't want to impose on old friendships when I wasn't sure how committed I would be - plus neither FBG nor Fantasy Sharks needs me to improve their standing in the community. But I really love going to the Expo and seeing old friends and making new ones. This really is more of a family to me than a hobby. But writing, at least for me, has always been arduous. I would spend 4-6 hours researching and writing a single article. And that is on top of the constant normal research that goes on watching the news and scouring the web. Podcasting takes me 15 minutes prep and then however long the show is. So the short answer is - I'm too lazy to get back into the writing game. I did rewrite (and update) an old article on Twitter this year - The Curse of 370. It essentially reminds people that drafting Saquon Barkley this year is very perilous. If I can find the Twitter thread I will post a link here. But essentially, since 2010, 15 backs have had 370+ touches in a single season. All have dropped in fantasy points the following year. Ezekial Elliot dropped just 5% which I consider normal regression. The next best guy (don't remember who) dropped about 25%. The worst was 100%. The average drop was 46%. Even Derrick Henry suffered from the curse. Twice. So I will let someone else risk taking Barkley this year.

Really thought the league would fill up. I will be posting the invite to my X followers tomorrow unless it fills up tonight. Draft is Saturday so I can’t wait.

welcome back Gregory - I've been around a long enough time but mostly to read, and I recall your insights to be excellent content.
Thank you. I don’t study the game as much as I used to so take what I say with a grain of salt. But I am lucky enough to have some of the best minds in the hobby like me enough to talk to me. Well, they tolerate me. It’s why I love the FFExpo. I get to watch the current guys draft and talk to them in person.

I have to tell you folks that Joe has assembled easily the best group of fantasy minds on his one site there has ever been.

I’m not putting down the other sites. I like and respect people from all of them. But Bob Harris taught me everything I know. I like to think I had a little hand in developing Tipp Major (he was my podcast co-host and remains my travel buddy for the Expo). And several other staffers I love to chat with but every time I talk to Hutchinson Brown - wow that young man is impressive. And he was 17 when I first met him. Lots of people are smart. But Hutch has a wisdom and humility that is way beyond his years. Great young man. And if it weren’t for the Expo I might never have met him.

Missed this the first time around, very cool. Will check out the podcast.
Try the Hot Pockets, they're breathtaking.
hot pockets are nice, but IIRC,
Thursday Checkdown at The Sports Affiliation on YouTube but I took the off-season off so you have to go back to last year to hear my velvety voice.

Hot Pockets are cool but back in the day we had this discussion writ large. And IIRC it was Frosted Cherry Pop Tarts that carried the day!

I'm old enough to remember when hot pockets first came out. I had a friend that always had them at his house. At the time I just felt like they were rich. Fast forward 35 years and we buy cases of hot pockets and keep them in the house at all times. I haven't eaten one in years. I ain't rich either.

Another vote for cherry pop tarts!!!!
