Is there data available as to which stadium... (1 Viewer)

Devil's Advocate
Calling Mike Herman. :football:

More specifically, I would love to see which stadium (say, over the past five or ten years) sees the highest percentage of successful field goals made by visiting kickers. That way, a great kicker who plays half his games in the same stadium won't skew the results too badly.

If I were a national writer and had access to all the teams, I would love to take a poll of every NFL kicker to ask which stadium - other than his home field - he thinks is the best place to kick FGs, all things considered. Mainly good weather (or a dome), good surface to kick off of, never too windy, etc. It seems to me kickers fare pretty well in Miami and Tampa. I'd like to see the actual numbers.

I have a hard time believing Herman hasnt thought of this angle given how mind boggling his research is. Will be interesting to see what he comes up with. While we wait for him to check in Id be willing to bet Pittsburgh is pretty far dow the list. That field is notorious for being in bad shape.

Certainly. Chicago and Seattle are probably near the bottom as well.I know kickers used to hate Giants Stadium due to the swirling winds. Not sure if the design of the new building yields the same dynamic.

You'd want to control for distance, comparing 30-yard attempts in Denver to 30-yard attempts in Green Bay. Otherwise, if Green Bay is an extremely difficult place to kick and nobody ever attempts 50+ yarders there, while Denver is an easy place to kick so teams always go for field goals instead of punting, you won't get a meaningful comparison just by looking at overall field goal percentage. The average attempt will be longer in friendlier stadiums, so the overall percentages may be similar in Green Bay and Denver even if Denver is way easier.

You'd also need to control for the quality of the 'home' kicker in each stadium. David Akers might make the Vet look a lot better than it is. And the Redskins' parade of also-ran Ks could make Fed Ex look a lot worse.

It's not quite the question you asked, but see Chapter 34 at this link for monthly kicking results in each stadium, home & visiting kickers combined, from 2001 thru 2008.
Sweet, thanks. ETA, chapter 33 is even more interesting to me. That's exactly what I wanted to see... opinions from kickers.
Here are two more batches of kickers opinions on tough stadiums:Field of Unpleasant Dreams, part 1

Field of Unpleasant Dreams, part 2

Thanks again. Can't get enough of this stuff.

I'll take any little edge I can get in picking a lineup. How many times have each of us lost by just 1 point?

The dirty little secret is that kickers matter!

Agreed that every edge matters, I've both won and lost by far less than a point before.I'm sure Mike Herman takes all of the above and much more into consideration with his weekly kicker rankings, which I value highly.

Ive always heard having a kicker in a dome really matters. Interesting to see just how much. Thanks for the link. Still would be interesting to see how OPPOSING kickers did ( to take out the good kicker versus bad kicker variable) but Im too lazy to try to figure that out so I dont expect anybody else to. :P

I drafted who I believed was a top-3 kicker because of his offense in Rackers. With Schaub out for the year, that plan has taken a detour. Now, unless the weather is an issue, I'll probably be rolling with Nick Novak every week. He is a surprising 19-22 this year, and his kicks from 50+ look effortless. I got lucky that he was still on the waiver wire a few weeks back.
