Jake Plummer traded to Tampa Bay (1 Viewer)

NFLN scroll says Schefter is reporting Plummer is expected to retire and trade will be nullified. FWIW.ETA: Expected, not going, to retire.
Just saw this...WOW!Maybe Garcia is still in the mix...surprised Plummer wants to retire but he does dance to his own beat a bit.

PLUMMER RETIRESAdam Schefter of NFL Network reports that Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer has retired in lieu of being traded to Tampa.Word of the trade broke earlier this morning, but recent published reports suggested that Plummer might pack it in.Plummer has played 10 NFL seasons. We have a weird feeling that, after a year or so on the sidelines, he might be lured back. The Cardinals, for example, will need a backup after Kurt Warner retires, and it would be fitting for Plummer to end his career there.

Salary Cap and Collective Bargaining guru's check in. What are the financial consequences or outcome differences between cutting Plummer or him retiring. Does his contract accelerate if he retires or does he owe the Bronco's money? Here is Jake's contract,

2007: $5,300,000 ($8,605,000 cap number)

2008: $4,800,000

2009: $5,800,000

2010: Free Agent

actually him retiring will help us a bit, they lost the 4th round pick which I think was going to be used to land a RB, but they gain some of his bonus back. I'm not sure how it works though cause the majority of Plummer's bonus came in a $5 milllion roster bonus last year. Not sure if roster bonus' work the same way as signing bonus'.

I have to wonder if Plummer would decide to not retire if he were traded to Houston instead, so he'd still be playing in the same offensive system under Kubiak. Could this just be a way of avoiding a trade he doesn't want and making the team deal him somewhere else?

This trade made no sense. I mean none. Plummer isn't really a good fit in Tampa, not accurate enough. He also makes a lot of money. Garcia could be had for less, is a better fit and would help with the development of the younger guys.

It is a terrible deal for Plummer as well, because the Broncos were going to cut him. This lets him go where he wants.

I still expect he ends up in Houston somehow.

My ???is why does Tampa need so many qb's?
As the year closed out Gruden's final press conference was pretty much just about QBs. He wanted a vet now. It's good that Gradkowski and Simms are developping but I kinda got the impression he feels real limitted counting on them. Plummer should give them the chance to sit back and groom one of these youngsters with some patience. Although some might say Simms is running out of time though

Is playing for and living in Tampa that bad that one would rather retire?
For a West Coast mentailty person, Tampa could be hell. But for someone that hated growing up in the snow and looks at Florida as one of the premier vacation spots in the country which it is...then its heaven. And if they play golf, hate state income taxes, like to hang out at beaches with no waves and babes in bikins, and don't mind old people that have one foot on the brake and one in the grave, its terrific for those kind of folks. Florida is a great place to live for a lot of people. Beaches all up and down the state, I miss it sometimes.

Plummer traded to Tampa.

Plummer decides to retire.

Trade voided.

Plummer still on Broncos roster.

Broncos trade him elsewhere.

If that's possible, it's a wonder that more players don't do it.

Technically, he wouldn't be part of their roster if he's retired...

Because the NFL team can always call their bluff. There is nothing preventing the Broncos from wishing Plummer the best of luck and maintaining his rights.

The Broncos want the pick they could get for Plummer, not vindication.

My (admittedly limited) understanding at present is that Plummer has merely said he'll retire, but has not retired, and that the trade is being voided. Maybe I'm wrong about that?

Once he retires what they want is irrelevant. They can:1. Ask him to keep playing for them2. Ask him which teams he would be willing to play for and try to work out a deal with them3. Let him retire

I would ASSUME that the trade would be voided only upon his filing of retirement papers. ???

There's talk/speculation/ in league circles that Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer is using the retirement card as a ploy to get traded to Houston.

Though there was a report a week ago out of Denver that Plummer could pack it in, there was no hard evidence that he might quit until after news broke that Plummer would be traded to the Bucs for a fourth-round pick.

If Plummer retires, he'd potentially owe the team the portion of any signing bonus that applies to the three remaining years of his contract. And the Broncos have a history of playing hardball in matters of this nature -- just ask Dale Carter, Daryl Gardener, Eddie Kennison, and Ashley Lelie.

This all makes sense ...

I don't know that the retirement issue will ever come up in the trade. First thing is the player passes a physical with the Bucs. Once he doesn't show it'll be voided so....one way or another it will be

That's how I hear it too.If Tampa voids the trade Plummer's fine and can just recant. If not, Plummer has to retire or he would be violating terms of the CBA or NFLPA I'm sure. You can't just not show up for work and expect to collect a paycheck.

Plummer hasn't retired people, he is simply using what leverge he has to go to the team he wants too. Plummer would be fine to retire, but he wants to play for a couple of more years and he won't settle to be a backup.

The rumor I'm hearing now is that Plummer goes to Houston, Carr to Tampa, and the fourth rounder to Denver. Apparently John Clayton's phone is ringing off the hook, so something is going on.

Also, apparently Denver is taking Kerney hostage and for all intensive purposes not letting him leave till he signs a contract. Not sure about the Graham situation though.

David Carr to the Bucs makes no sense. He is about the same as Simms, seriously. He has not had a winning record in any of his seasons as a starter...I think the Bucs would be taking a step back at best bringing him in and parting witha draft pick out of that mess.

I disagree and as much as I hate D. Carr now he was on an expansion team that had nothin so sure he is not gonna have a winning record in his career. I watched Simm alot at Texas and he just cant play the NFL level. I honestly thought he would be a better NFL qb than college qb but I was wrong he makes too many horrible throws. Carr on the other hand is just shell shocked but he has the arm strength and accuracy to get the ball to the weapons that tampa has. I think it makes alot of sense to me.Plus with gruden he'll have someone that wont treat him like a child or a special guy. I think thats what David needs is someone to get in his face.

That's kind of what I was thinking. Time is really on Plummer's side here. He can "think about" retiring and "intend" to retire until either Denver or Tampa decide to scrap the trade attempt and do something else.

New Rumor: Denver is taking Kerney to casa banita's to close the deal
Once he's seen the show were the outlaw gets blasted over the edge of the waterfall, goes through the cave hideout-thing, and eats the vomit- and diarrhea- inducing food there, how can he say no?
