This came up as a friend and I were talking about the Rams - Eagles game and we had different opinions on who was the better QB. I could see him picking the guy he did but he was shocked I picked the guy I did.

My subjectivity would have me choosing Stafford, as I feel a QBs most important aspects involve reading defenses and actually throwing the ball, but he'd be ridiculously miscast in the current Eagles or Ravens offense.

The quarterback is the weakest link.

Make that statement about a typical NFL team and it’s a recipe for disaster. In the Eagles’ case, not so much. The only reason Jalen Hurts is the weakest link on the Eagles’ offense is because the quarterback is surrounded by an embarrassment of riches.

The offensive line lost Jason Kelce, but it’s still among the best in the NFL. Turn on the film and it’s impossible not to be impressed by what the Eagles do to teams up front.

Voted Hurts. Biased for sure but, right now Hurts over Stafford. Stafford in his prime was the bomb for Detroit and his talents almost got wasted in that city. I don't believe we've seen Hurts in his prime yet.

Cooked is probably pushing it, but I feel like a lot of people are thinking 2021 Stafford is the guy still playing. He's a clear level below that.

Right now though is tough because I think it depends on the other personnel and style. Hurts is probably the better QB for the Eagles. Stafford is probably the better QB for the Rams and would be the better option for teams like San Fran, Minnesota, Houston (when healthy), Atlanta, etc. because he's better at getting the ball out to good playmakers. Hurts makes more sense on teams where the QB needs to do more and run RPOs and the like. I'm thinking of teams like Pittsburgh, Dallas, in addition to the obvious ones like Buffalo and Baltimore where they rely heavily on or could better benefit a more mobile QB.

Wow. Just rea this. Would not have guessed a lot of these in terms of the passing numbers - though they're still pretty darn close. Probably the most surprising is the yards/attempt (though it makes sense because the Rams run a lot of quick hitters and bubble screens to Puka).

My first thought was to pick Hurts because he is so much younger. As I thought about it more, the more I lean Stafford. Hurts is great in the short yardage run game, but he does not produce the passing stats that a person should with the best O-line in football, and 2 very good WRs. I can promise you that AJB would not be reading a book on the sidelines if Stafford were his QB. He would be getting 15 targets/game and leading the NFL in everything.

Right - I recognize that it is not super relevant and the sample size over the year is more meaningful.

Frankly, I'm a still reeling Vikings fan that watched Stafford well outperform Darnold live, so when I read your comment I couldn't help myself. My own eyes just watched Stafford play really good QB.

Agreed. Eagles have amazing playmakers and if they structured their gameplan differently I think Stafford would be the better QB for their team. In other words, I don't believe what I stated is mutually exclusive to the Eagles having good playmakers.

I would also add, that Saquon Barkley isn't running for 2,000 yards if Stafford is his QB. Hurts rushing threat probably adds .5+ yards per carry to Barkley, as Hurts takes at least 1 defender with him every play.

We really have no way of knowing the impact of a better arm vs mobile hurts. Derrick Henry didn’t have a mobile QB in 2020, they’re similar in quality and the eagles have a better team around him than Henry did. We haven’t seen Saquon do it before partly because the giants are that bad.

They are such different QB styles. It’s hard to compare. So many variables. Career, harder to defend, better passer, more athletic…

Decided to go with who is better right now. Picked Hurts because I think he will beat Stafford today and his ability to run outweighs the edge Stafford has as a passer.

A reminder - the question is for right now. For sure, Stafford is much older. But right now is the time point.
