Is this the same cap situation where Dak, Zeke, and DeMarcus Lawrence have yet to get paid?dhockster said:I have to laugh at the people ragging on the Cowboys for this move. At worst, it's a move that doesn't improve their TE's but probably doesn't hurt their TE production since it wasn't very good anyway. The $3.5 million is very small when you consider the Cowboys cap situation.
Yes but the good news is they have the cap space to do it.Is this the same cap situation where Dak, Zeke, and DeMarcus Lawrence have yet to get paid?
Yep. $47 million of cap space. Another $12 million they could create by cutting Hurns and Lee. They could extend Cooper and save money on his cap hit this year. Zeke could be given a fifth year option which would not affect this years cap. Dak could be signed to a long term deal but that also does not need to affect this years cap. So yes, the $3.5 million Witten contract does very little in affecting their overall cap situation. Do a little research before making assumptions. Is this the same cap situation where Dak, Zeke, and DeMarcus Lawrence have yet to get paid?
I did tooHey I loved Dennis Miller
I know no one cares but this made me laugh. My son used to get so pissed. "How is he open!?! He only runs one route - run 12 yards and turn around and he's always open!!1!"Jason Wittens 3.5 million. People are over reacting. Hes still a HOF TE who will get open on 3rd down. I have no idea how. I have no idea why teams allow it but he does.
Dak Prescott said Jason Witten "hasn't lost a step" since returning from his one-year retirement.
In fact, Prescott believes Witten's year away from football may have done him some good. "I guess the trick is to take a year off because he’s definitely gotten better, stronger and faster," the QB remarked earlier this week. Witten was never the most athletic tight end, but he's always been a capable receiver, ranking fourth on the all-time catch list behind Jerry Rice, Tony Gonzalez and Larry Fitzgerald. To conserve his reps, the 37-year-old has been a spectator for a third of the team's practices, a trend that should continue throughout the offseason.

A living legend. It will be a privilege to have him on my team this season.this man is a beast, i tell you, a BEAST !!!
Clearly Gronk retired because he saw this guy coming.A living legend. It will be a privilege to have him on my team this season.this man is a beast, i tell you, a BEAST !!!
Call me cynical, but whenever an old player un-retires or comes back from a serious injury, the news reports are always about how they are "in the best shape of their life".

And then the games start, and they look old, slow and washed-up.
Jason Witten caught all four of his targets for 25 yards and one score in Dallas' Week 2 win over Washington.
Witten caught his second touchdown in as many weeks as he was once again used as the receiver in a pick-play that sprung him wide open on the goal line. Witten isn't putting up yardage, totaling 40 receiving yards in two offensive explosions for the Cowboys, but his touchdowns are doing just enough to keep him involved all the while rendering Blake Jarwin useless for fantasy. A touchdown and 30 yards is his weekly ceiling at age 37.

Jason Witten caught 8-of-9 targets for 58 yards in the Cowboys' Week 9 win over the Giants.
The targets, catches, and yards all marked season-highs for Witten, who now has four 50-plus yards games under his belt. Witten hasn't scored since Week 2. He's fine for a handful of catches and 40-ish yards each week if that's something you're into for fantasy. Witten possesses next to zero upside and draws the Vikings in Week 10.

Jason Witten caught 5-of-7 targets for 37 yards in the Cowboys' Week 14 loss to the Bears.
Witten had his catch-and-fall game working in the Windy City. The 37-year-old looked like an iceberg going side to side. He's now averaging a ridiculous 8.6 yards per catch. His most notable contribution this evening was frequent sideline tirades. The Rams await for Week 15 in Dallas.
They have been increasingly more snarky and opinionated since I started following them 5-6 years ago and it's starting to turn me off them and think about using other sources.Gotta wonder about Roto's snark here. This is just trashing a guy for doing nothing but looking competent in places set up correctly to be so, and gutting out age.
Still probably the definitive source to go to, so I wasn't really complaining about anything like that, just wondering whether their snark doesn't undercut the conveyance of their actual analysis. For example, nobody has gotten a worse rap than Carlos Hyde. The stuff they say about him makes one think he's garbage. But he's been okay this year. Serviceable. Certainly not worth the venom of Roto, Nick Chubb and Duke Johnson notwithstanding these past two years (Chubb behind Hyde was clearly a mistake in retrospect and in foreseeability to most people). They have been increasingly more snarky and opinionated since I started following them 5-6 years ago and it's starting to turn me off them and think about using other sources.
Witten had a decent season for looking so much slower than the other players on the field.
Yeah, JarwinEither keeping someone more deserving off the roster, or out of the starting lineup.
isn't Jarwin a free agent in 2020? if so then he's going to make more money and opportunity with another team. Schultz, who is a capable blocker, is the #2 and heir apparent. He's got the pedigree with the Stanford TE factory. I can see where Schultz - who left early for the draft - needed some time to develop before stepping in as a full time starter possibly.Yeah, Jarwin
I love ya Witt, but go away
He still had a better year on the field than he did in 2018 in the booth.Witten had a decent season for looking so much slower than the other players on the field.
No doubt about that. Pretty sure they were not going to bring him back to the booth for another season. He still had a better year on the field than he did in 2018 in the booth.

He really stunted Jarwin growth without adding much on the field. Jarwin RAC and explosiveness was clear when given the opportunity.Yeah, Jarwin

He was blown off the ball numerous times in this past weeks games vs Philly.Fantasy-wise, he made for a good plug and play off the wire if desperate. One could have done worse. Football-wise, I can't really comment. The proof was in the pudding and he was on the field an awful lot. I find it hard to believe it was out of pure deference, but that he may still be hanging on, talent-wise in certain packages, to deserve a spot.
I watched a lot of the prime time and games of the week with DAL. He didn't look out of place. Jarwin looked faster, no doubt, but what about blocking and sitting down in zones which TEs have to do often? How adept was he at that?
I think you need a real footballer to come in and talk about that to have a better understanding of how his year went.
Jarwin looks like such an explosive weapon out there. It’s criminal that Witten steals snaps from him.Yeah, Jarwin
I love ya Witt, but go away
I dunno, ESPN has never been quick to admit their mistakes. No doubt about that. Pretty sure they were not going to bring him back to the booth for another season.
Certainly not this year. Personally, I think Witten did nothing to really help the offense this year. This is an offense that was desperate for a reliable playmaker in the passing game. Witten was present but without impact.Maybe
He doesn’t exactly have eye popping stats.
Free agent Jason Witten said he wants to "be with the Dallas Cowboys" but also understands he "may have to go somewhere else."
This has always been implied. Witten did also say he has met with new head coach Mike McCarthy and has remained in communication with the Jones family in Dallas, but things have gone stagnant with the Combine and other contracts coming up. The veteran will have some opportunities outside of Dallas if it gets that far, particularly with the Giants and OC Jason Garrett. Witten will likely be a complementary player who serves as a clubhouse leader.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Clarence Hill reports "by all accounts" impending free agent TE Jason Witten is not returning to the Cowboys.
It's unclear if Hill is going off of a source or simply speculating. Either way, the team's decision to tender restricted free agent Blake Jarwin at a second-round level would indicate that moving on from Witten is the plan. The Cowboys' long-time starting TE averaged career-low marks in yards per receptions (8.4) and yards per target (6.4) in 2019, but continued to play a near every-down role anyway. Owner Jerry Jones said recently that he hopes to re-sign Witten.
