The News

Running back Jason Wright will start Sunday for the Browns, and erstwhile starter Reuben Droughns isn't sure why he's been benched. "I don't know what's going on," Droughns told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "I'm kind of in the dark right now. But at the same time, they've got some younger guys that they have trust in and it's just one of those situations that you've got to understand the moves that they're trying to make."

Our View

Droughns, who has been nursing a sore foot and worked with the second team the past week, carried twice for four yards against the Bengals last Sunday and played mostly on special teams—a role you wouldn't expect a starting running back to fill. Droughns is due a $1.75 million roster bonus and $1.25 million salary next year, plus performance incentives, so perhaps the Browns are seeing what they've got in order to determine if they should pony up the money for Rube this offseason.

Not disputing it, but Fanball seems to be often wrong. Any other confirmation?
A little something from Cleveland.com:Droughns' starting status cloudy Thursday, November 30, 2006Running back Reuben Droughns' status as the Browns' starting running back of the future is in jeopardy. Droughns, who was benched last week in favor of Jason Wright, said he's upset and doesn't know why he has been benched. "Sometimes it is upsetting, but you've got to understand the position that they're trying to address as well," he said. Asked if there's anything going on behind the scenes, Droughns said, "Not as far as I know. I don't know what's going on." Droughns, who's been nursing a sprained foot, carried the ball twice for 4 yards against the Bengals on Sunday. He played primarily on special teams. "I'm kind of in the dark right now," he said. "But at the same time, they've got some younger guys that they have trust in and it's just one of those situations that you've got to understand the moves that they're trying to make." Droughns, who rushed for 1,232 yards last season, signed a three-year, $12 million extension in the off-season, but most of that isn't guaranteed. He received a $2.5 million signing bonus, a $1.25 million roster bonus in 2006 and a $1.2 million salary. Essentially, he's making about $5 million to play this season. He's due a $1.75 million roster bonus and $1.25 million salary in 2007, plus incentives based on yards. Still listed as questionable with the foot, Droughns has been working with the second team again this week and missed portions of practice Wednesday. Coach Romeo Crennel said earlier this week that Wright started in part because of Droughns' foot and in part because of the way he hit the holes against Pittsburgh.Edit:More of the articleRyan Tucker is out for the season with what's believed to be an emotional illness, but he told Crennel he wants to return. "Once he gets himself right, he'll have the opportunity to," said Crennel. Crennel said Tucker will issue a statement in a day or two regarding his situation. "We want what's best for [Ryan] and his family," said Crennel. "We'll support him and his recovery." Kelly Butler will replace Tucker at right tackle. "My prayers go out to him," said Butler. "He's a great guy and I looked to him for guidance, on and off the field. I didn't want my opportunity to come like this, but now I have to make the best of it." McGinest calls for effort: Willie McGinest echoed Braylon Edwards' sentiments that some players need to step it up. "Guys on this team need to put forth a little better effort," said McGinest, who has three Super Bowl rings with New England. "We need to prepare harder and play harder. "I've said it before to different guys around here and I'll keep saying it until more guys start doing it. There are a lot of guys that work hard, but I think we all need to put more into it if we really care about what's going on." McGinest said he thought about calling a players-only team meeting, as Edwards suggested on Monday, "But everything's been addressed. Some of the problems, we handle in-house. It doesn't need to be a public spectacle. Maybe [a team meeting] needs to happen, but what we really need is to start playing good football." Other players supported a team-meeting. "When you have three wins, guys have a lot of ideas," said quarterback Charlie Frye. "And if Braylon thinks that, then maybe it will help." Said tight end Kellen Winslow Jr.: "That's cool. You want to get some stuff cleared up, talk amongst yourselves and clear the air, that's good." Winslow agreed with all of the other players that Crennel is not the problem. "We love Romeo as a coach and as a person," said Winslow. "We can help him and help each other by starting to win some games so we don't have to go through this." Injuries: Orpheus Roye is doubtful with a knee injury. . . . Leigh Bodden (ankle) and Winslow (knee) were idle.

Nice to hear the players like Romeo, they need to keep repeating that so he stays.

It doesn't seem to matter who runs behind the line

Browns :: RB

RB Droughns' Starting Status Murky?

Mary Kay Cabot, Cleveland Plain Dealer - [Full Article]

HC Romeo Crennel said RB Reuben Droughns' benching was partly because of his sprained foot and partly because RB Jason Wright hit the holes well against Pittsburgh. Droughns carried the ball twice and was relegated mostly to special teams this past Sunday. Will Droughns be back as the starter? "When his foot heals, we'll see if that's the case," Crennel said.

And from this morning....

Browns :: RB

RB Droughns Working With Second Team Offense

Mary Kay Cabot, Cleveland Plain Dealer - [Full Article]

RB Reuben Droughns' status as the Browns' starting back of the future is in jeopardy. Droughns, who was benched last week in favor of Jason Wright, said he's upset and doesn't know why he has been benched. Asked if there's anything going on behind the scenes, Droughns said, "Not as far as I know. I don't know what's going on." Droughns carried the ball twice for 4 yards against the Bengals on Sunday. It's very possible Fanball used this article to speculate Wright will start, when officially there has be NO confirmation yet. Although Romeo said he was going to shake things up. Fanball and CBS Sportsline do this crap way too often.

How can a coach not communicate to a starter why they are being benched? If that really is true it tells me a lot about why Crennel is having problems.

Seriously, the Cleveland media is ######ed, Mary Kay Cabot in particular. If you watch the press interview with Droughns he knows exactly what's going on, that they are practicing the healthy backs and giving them more reps. Part of that is also seeing what they've got in the backups at this point in the season. Whoever gets more practice reps will probably get more gametime reps. End of story.

Droughns is still not 100%, and they want to see what Wright has, but I'd still expect Droughns to get his fair share of reps at gametime. This game against KC is huge as they are coming off maybe the worst game in the last few years against the Bengals.

And finally, NONE of this is confirmed so fanball is jumping the gun.

Oh and finally, none of you should be starting Droughns or any Browns RB for the rest of the year :)

Droughns is due a $1.75 million roster bonus and $1.25 million salary next year, plus performance incentives, so perhaps the Browns are seeing what they've got in order to determine if they should pony up the money for Rube this offseason.
Seems to me it's quite clear what's going on.I don't expect Droughns to start anymore this season.

They don't see him as their future back, so why pay him $4M next season?

They are trying to cut their losses by keeping those PIs as low as possible.

Just my O from reading that blurb.

Unless he has already hit them? A quick look at the details of his contract would solve this mystery... if anyone could find it online.

what is the status of Jerome Harrison, how did Wright pass him on the depth chart so easily??
Cleveland InactivesSummary: QB Ken Dorsey (3rd QB), RB Jerome Harrison, WR Travis Wilson, OL Fred Matua, OL Rob Smith, OL Isaac Sowells, DL Orpheus Roye, DB Justin Hamilton

droughns started
Any homer insight as to why Droughn's started after all? Looks like they were splitting carries early on, although Droughns would up with more touches (which I imagine reflects him running better yesterday)

Yeah, it seemed that Wright couldn't get anything going... except the one reception he took for a long distance. That play alone probably made starting him worthwhile, for those that started him (which doesn't include me).

That was the best I've seen Droughns run this year! He seems to be alot more motivated since he's been supposedly benched. I didn't see Wright do anything to lose playing time though, so I'm thinking RBBC from here on out. Wright had 70 receiving yards, but got 54 of those on 1 catch. Although they aren't doing it yet, I could see Wright in on 3rd downs, but before you get too excited, it would be stupid for Romeo not to see what Harrison could do in that job before the end of the season.

It's my 2 cents. Take it for what it's worth guys.

wright actually had 2 receptions that were for long gains

the other was for 16 yards and got the browns to the one yard line setting up a Droughns TD (that should be in Joe's Random shots)

botht did a good job of spelling each other, that is why i think Droughns ran so well, wright brought a different game to the field and helped to keep the defense on there heels

I don't think that matters much. Bud Carson was well-liked by the players, too.
