Jon Kitna Going Forward (1 Viewer)

Is this guy going to start next year or are the Lions going with Josh McCown in '08? Chances are Millen will draft more wide receivers or kicker/holder and not a quarterback.

Or are they in the market for a QB?

Kitna put up some decent fantasy points last year in the Martz system, especially in leagues that don't penalize for INT's...

Any homer insight would be great...

Right now, Kitna is the unquestioned #1 QB, and Marinelli and Martz both love him. I really don't see McCown being a factor, and this is the last year of his contract.

Kitna will be even better in this system year 2. I look for him to be a top 8 QB in 08. This guy, people forget, had a great thing going before Palmer showed up. I think he has 3 good years left in the tank. I would be happy to have him as my QB1 in any league this year. Martz+ Lions D= Great QB FF #'s

:goodposting: I was pleasantly surprised w/ Kitna this year, especailly picked up as a late round backup. Am actually considering keeping him (vs. Hasselbeck) in a 8 player keeper. The tds aren't always there, but his yardage is solid and relatively dependable. Now with some ?s @ RB, or at least some new faces, I think DET will pass even more next year.

:football: from a lifelong Lions fan. After many years of mediocre/bad QB's, I was pleased with Kitna this year. It's only too bad that he's too old, because he's obviously not the long-term solution. Hopefully he can keep the int's down this year. I'd be fine with him mentoring a young QB this year, but I highly doubt it'll be McCown. When he saw zero playing time late last year, with playoffs long out of reach, that pretty much closed the door on him IMO. The same can be said for Orlovsky. I was surprised that neither QB was given the "our season is over, let's see what he can do" starting QB gig. You never know how training camp will play out though.

the only problem i have with this is the lions offensive line and kitnas late game jitters. martz says kitna ran his offense perfectly, everyone else screwed up. the o line needs to protect better for the offense (and kitna) to click. kitna is definately the man in 07. 08 probably depends on the lions level of success this year. a good year (haha) and kitna sticks around (then they draft a QB for him to groom). another bad year for the team and they probably go with orlovsky or whoever they draft this year in 08. then again this is detroit so who knows what they'll do :football:

:football: i too liked kitna this year. he'd be great on a team with a lot of talent and playoffs hopes. unfortunately thats not my lions. theyre in a rebuilding mode (still) and need to be thinking about a QB of the future. instead of what mike martz wants (which is to land a head coaching job, not secure future success for the lions). if they dont think orlovsky is the Qb of the future, i think they'll draft one this year. may not be quinn or russell but maybe someone in rd 2 (drew stanton?) or later.

Kitna no doubt helped alot of fantasy teams last season with some up nice #s. But the Lions are also drafting 2nd overall for a reason, and his 31 total turnovers are a big part of that....22 picks and 9 fumbles lost. He had to be a pain in the ### in leagues that penalized for INTs and FLs. The man is and always has been a turnover machine. So if the Lions want to move in the direction of winning, which year in and year out remains debatable, then they have to start at QB. Realistically, Kitna isnt taking this team anywhere. I cant help but believe the Lions would know this. But the organization doesnt have much of a clue, so Ill be interested to see if they actually stick with the guy.

I don't know if I'm necessarily sold on Kitna this year. In my opinion, it all depends on if they can get a KJ type season out of Bell. KJ had a decent year catching passes out of the backfield, and I don't recall Bell having especially good hands. Plus he wasn't very good at blocking or picking up the blitz, which is why Shanny never annointed him the full starter. I may be wrong, but I recall Martz's offenses having great RB's and I just don't see Bell as being that great RB in Martz's system. I liken him more to Trung Canidate than anything else.

Detroit's offensive line is just offensive, and if Bell isn't able to help protect Kitna in obvious passing situations, I see Kitna taking more sacks this year. I just don't see Kitna being that effective this year.

Lots of Kitna's turnovers were due to the fact that his team was playing from behind at the end of almost every game. I lost count of how many picks I saw that were more desperation than they were a Kitna mistake.I was pretty impressed with Kitna overall, and I think he'd do very well if the Lions give him a respectable line and another weapon or two. Not holding my breath that that will happen though.

:goodposting: I was equally impressed.

Why wouldn't they be behind a lot this year?

Well, they will, and he'll probably throw more than his share of picks again. My point was just that he's a better real-life QB than those INTs indicate.

I dont honestly watch enough of Kitna to bash him too hard, though the #s are what they are. But at some point, and likely fairly soon, Kitna will find himself in a 'Kurt Warner' situation where he's merely a stop gap solution. He'll be the caretaker to a position that is surely being reserved for someone a little younger and a little better. Id expect the Lions to draft Joe Thomas with their top pick and give Kitna and that running game a fighting chance. If they do that and pass on Quinn, then Kitna is safe for another year ....unless they just continue to play like a team gearing up for another 2nd overall draft pick. We'd no doubt see McCown at that point. But if he can keep them hovering around .500, then he would be a good value pick as a starter. I just wouldnt really want to touch him, personally because doing so would be expecting the Lions to actually do something positive. :lmao:

:lmao: I'm not optimistic about Bell's fit there either.
