Jordan Reed - TE - SF (1 Viewer)

Rotoworld:

FOX Sports reports Jordan Reed (concussion) will be shut down for the rest of the season.

Speaking Thursday, coach Mike Shanahan said the team hadn't considered shutting Reed down, but it would make sense with Washington's season in the tank, particularly after Reed suffered a setback in Week 13. It's unclear if the Redskins plan to send Reed to injured reserve, or simply mark him as a weekly inactive. Either way, Reed can be safely dropped in re-draft fantasy leagues. If Reed's rookie year is indeed through, he finishes with 45 catches for 499 yards and three touchdowns. A highly athletic "move" tight end, Reed has been badly missed as the No. 2 option in Washington's passing attack. He'll be a TE1 for 2014.

The coach says they have not considered shutting him down and The reporter says he is done for the season? WTF?

I think next week they're just going to have a poll up on the Redskins website. "Vote now for our shut down for the rest of the season player of the week!" :)

Rotoworld:

Jordan Reed (concussion) is listed as questionable for Week 15.

FOX Sports reported on Friday that Reed would be shut down for the season, so we're not expecting him to be play at Atlanta. Per beat writer Chris Russell, Reed "has to past a test tomorrow and then the conditioning test on Sunday." In the unlikely event Reed is active, he'll be a TE1 against the Falcons.

Rotoworld:

Jordan Reed (concussion) was still experiencing headaches as of Monday.

It's not a good sign for Reed's chances of playing again this season. After being listed as questionable last Friday, Reed was downgraded to out on Saturday and missed his fourth consecutive game. Reed has a lot of talent, but the concussion woes are now becoming a long-term concern for Dynasty owners.

What a nice gift it would be for Reed owners if they could use him against the horrible Dallas defense in their championship games.

Jordan Reed (concussion) did not practice Wednesday.
Reed was still experiencing headaches as of Monday and has yet to be cleared to practice. He hasn't played since going down in Week 11 and the Redskins are considering shutting him down for the final two games.

Wow. This train has been decisively de-railed. I thought I had great Gronk-insurance. Now I have nothing.

Mychal Rivera...come on down!

Reed seeing additional specialist today. This is getting bad. What's scary about this is that he didn't take some huge shot. Hell I haven't seen anything even showing where he sustained the concussion........

Yeah, this is well past the point where it's bad for redraft and now at the point where Reed has to be seriously downgraded in dynasty, too. Concussions are no joke.

Rotoworld:

Redskins placed TE Jordan Reed on injured reserve with a concussion, ending his season.

FOX Sports reported last Thursday that Reed would be shut down for the season. Coach Mike Shanahan said the team made the decision after a concussion specialist recommended Reed not practice for at least another three weeks. It's a scary situation, but at least for now, there's no reason to believe we're in Jahvid Best territory. Reed should be ready for the Redskins' offseason program. An ascendant player before his concussion knocked him out in Week 11, Reed finishes his rookie year with 45 catches for 499 yards and three touchdowns in nine games. He'll return as a TE1 in 2014.

Rookie report: Jordan Reed

January, 28, 2014

By John Keim | ESPN.com

Tight end Jordan Reed, a third-round pick from Florida, could easily end up being the best pick from this draft. Right now his only competition would be second-round cornerback David Amerson. Even if Amerson plays well, it's easy to see that Reed could become one of the better players at his position because of his game-breaking ability. Here's the book on his rookie season:

Stats: Reed caught 45 passes for 499 yards and three touchdowns in nine games. He missed the final six games because of a concussion.

Role: Reed began the season as the No. 3 tight end, but surpassed starter Fred Davis as the primary pass-catcher within three games.

Highlight: Reed caught nine passes for 143 yards and a game-winning three-yard touchdown grab in a 45-41 win against Chicago.

What I liked: Just about everything, starting with his approach and his talent. Reed consistently stayed after practice to work on his game; after being drafted he hit the weights hard, and that helped him improve as a blocker. He understands what he must work on to improve. I list those things first because it’s why the kid has a chance to be good for a long time. As for his game, there is a lot to like. Reed’s athleticism was obvious in camp, and his ability to create separation is fantastic. There were times in games I saw him create five yards of space as he cut (against Chicago), just because of a hard plant the other way. He used footwork that he once used for basketball moves to separate from linebackers over the middle. He showed a knack for knowing when to sit in an area against zone coverage. Saw this against the Bears when the linebackers over the middle were less than seven yards apart. Rather than continue his route, he quickly sat and caught a pass. Reed became a trusted target because of his wide catch radius, as the coaches liked to say. Here’s a better way: he’s highly athletic and makes terrific adjustments on the ball. Sometimes they were so subtle that you forget it’s hard for tight ends to make those grabs. On one out route, the ball was thrown inside, but Reed easily spun back the other way for the grab. There were many such examples, but it enabled Robert Griffin III to throw with more trust to Reed. Reed's blocking was better than anticipated after watching him in college, where he transitioned from quarterback. He did a good job blocking in space because of how he moved his feet -- it helped him a lot against Dallas linebacker Sean Lee on a screen. He typically did a nice job with his hands, though his blocking was definitely inconsistent. Reed plays with enthusiasm, though that was evident more so after his blocks than his big catches.

What I didn’t like: There wasn’t anything I didn’t like. But there were areas he must improve. His blocking needs to be more consistent. I saw improvement in this area. There were times early in the season when he would go to engage defenders, but lower his head too much when he blocked. I did not see that being an issue later in the season. But he must learn how to block for situations. At times he was beat not because he was overpowered, but because he failed to account for how his man was aligned compared to what he might have faced in other games. That didn’t happen often, but it did occur. Durability will be a question until he plays an entire season. That’s not to fault him for getting a concussion; it was bad enough to cause him to miss six games, so clearly there was a legitimate issue. But Reed knows that he entered the NFL with questions about his durability.

Projection: He’ll be a force at this position if he stays healthy. Reed had just started to become more of a downfield threat before he was hurt. The bulk of his passes before the Bears game in Week 7 were underneath routes, but he hurt Chicago on a couple downfield throws, burning the Bears secondary on some post-corners. That will increase in 2014. The Redskins averaged 37 fewer yards through the air with Reed absent the final six games. I don’t know what Jay Gruden’s plans are for him, but I do know that new offensive coordinator Sean McVay loves Reed and it’s not hard for anyone to see the talent he has just by flipping on the film.

I'm going to target him in so many leagues this off-season... nice buy low with the concussion scare

How common is it to miss six games with a concussion?

Purely based on talent, Reed could be top 3-5 at his position in dynasty long term, if health doesn't disrupt his career.

Rotoworld:

New Redskins OC Sean McVay reportedly "loves" Jordan Reed.

McVay would be crazy not to. During an eye-opening rookie season that was unfortunately cut short by a severe concussion, Reed flashed Aaron Hernandez quicks as a route-runner and Jimmy Graham kind of ability on goal-line fade routes. If we project his eight full games across a 16-game season, he comes out with 88 catches, 974 yards and six touchdowns -- numbers good enough to be fantasy's No. 6 tight end. Chris Russell of ESPN Radio spoke with Reed Wednesday and relays news that he's feeling very good and is headed to Florida to work out. Health permitting, Reed will easily be in the top half of TE1s in 2014 as a focal point of Jay Gruden's pass-happy scheme.

Rotoworld:

The Washington Post reports Jordan Reed has fully recovered from the concussion symptoms that ended his rookie season and is back to training.

Reed should be full-go for the start of offseason workouts this spring. The new Redskins coaching staff reportedly "loves" Reed. Sean McVay, the Redskins new OC, was Washington's tight ends coach in 2013. There's obviously some long-term concern surrounding Reed because of the amount of time it took him to recover, but he's going to enter summer as a mid-to-high TE1.

get trade for him, look up to see if he was ever cleared from concussion and he wasn't, accept trade off and he gets cleared 2 days later.... must be me

its not at all and be silly to brush it off, but he might be worth the risk
players that miss more than 1 game is a giant red flag. Jahvid Best type issues.
I am choked I missed out on him in my TE+ league by a few picks late in my rookie draft, but I'd be hesitant to want to pay top dollar prices for him right now after he had his 3rd recorded concussion.

Yeah, Lesean McCoy too.

Seriously, it's the fact that it is (at least) his 3rd concussion that is concerning, not just the number of games he missed.

Rotoworld:

Redskins coaches believe Jordan Reed will be an excellent target on deeper throws.
Now that Reed is fully cleared off his season-ending concussion, the new coaching regime is cooking up schemes to feature him. It's a no-brainer move after evaluating the highly athletic tight end's skill set on tape. Jay Gruden's pass-happy offense and desire to push the ball downfield leave Reed dripping with upside. His eight full games as a rookie projected to a 88-974-6 line.

Isn't Jahvid Best the exception, though?

These guys still play with undiagnosed concussions, and have been since little league. We don't know how many these guys have had in their careers.

It's concerning, certainly, but I think it's premature to pull the Jahvid Best card. Not all concussions are equally damaging and Reed's looked nothing like Best's (or Collie's).

Yeah the comp to Best is not that great... there are multiple videos of Best laid out, doing the boxer pose, from college and NFL. Massive concussions easily visible on the video.

With Reed, you can't even pinpoint the exact play the concussion occurred.

I tend to think that Reed could've and would've come back had Washington been in playoff contention. Instead, knowing what a terrible situation it was and with RG3's "injury", either Reed himself (and his agent) or the team or both in combination decided to extend the streak of missed games to shut him down for the season. At that point, where's the upside in playing Reed for the final 1-3 games of the season? Pad his rookie stats? Get him some time with Cousins?

Of course, that's also what I want to believe, so I admit bias.

Didn't LeSean McCoy miss a handful of games with a concussion during the 2012 season?

I am a buyer in dynasty - but not going to over pay.

My concern for Reed is his history of concussions.

He suffered two in his days as a Florida Gator. Now another one which obviously must have been pretty severe.

Might be something we can learn from Javid Best......

if he got the concussion in week 1 he might have missed the whole season... its not like he returned and lit it up. Who knows how many games he would of ended up missing.

if he got the concussion in week 1 he might have missed the whole season...
That's not accurate. Reports are that the Skins shut him down along with RG3. Zero chance he misses 16 weeks.
I don't mean to be speaking for Dr. Bramel, but after the season he was suggesting the same thing, that Reed could probably have returned if he'd had a reason to.
After his concussion and recovery Reed was cleared to play at least two weeks in a row and suffered concussion-related setbacks the day before the game. I don't recall him being cleared all the way up to any game after the concussion.

Isn't the issue because it was his THIRD reported concussion... The dude's had his bell rung pretty significantly over the years. You probably can't tell exactly when it happened because it might not take much anymore.

THIS, People have short memories. He went back and forth for 4 or 5 weeks that he would be good to play and then be inactive because he couldn't get cleared. After a month of this they shut him down because they continued to lose games. If that doesn't scare the crap out of you then I don't know what does. Technically he wasn't cleared untill a month ago or so.

This actually fits the narrative more than it disproves it. A "setback" or a headache after he'd been medically cleared could completely be cover for just sitting him due to no reason to play. Think about how many Fridays at work you would miss if any kind of headache Tuesday through Friday, or a feeling of grogginess on Friday morning, would rule you out for the day. And then 4 or 5 weeks of it! THIS!

Again, this isn't accurate. There was a blurb a month ago stating he was cleared. That is different than him being cleared a month ago.

And it wasn't 4 or 5 weeks. It was 2 weeks, which isn't out of the norm.

I'm sorry, but that lingering effect is very very much like Best. Just because theres not a highlight film of him getting crushed like Best had doesn't mean the same effect isn't happening.

This is actually the way it happened.

Rotoworld:

The Redskins reportedly plan to fully capitalize on Jordan Reed's ability in the middle of the field.
Even before the DeSean Jackson acquisition, Jay Gruden and Sean McVay were drooling over Reed's impressive skill set. Jackson will only create more space between the hash marks for the 6'2/243 tight end. As the only pass-catcher with size on the roster, look for Robert Griffin III to target Reed heavily in the red zone and anytime he gets 1-on-1 with a linebacker. He remains in the top half of TE1s.

Rotoworld:

Jordan Reed is participating in this week's minicamp.
Reed is fully cleared from the concussion that ended his rookie season and won't be held back in training camp or preseason. He remains a prime breakout candidate with the Redskins moving to a more pass-heavy offense under Jay Gruden. Reed finished with 45 catches, 499 yards, and three touchdowns despite missing the final six games of last year. He doesn't turn 24 until July.
