Kevin Jones will stay on PUP, miss first five games of the season

For Lions fans, it's good news, but not great news.

According to a source close to the situation, the surgeon who performed the Lisfranc surgery on the left foot of running back Kevin Jones has agreed with Lions trainers that Jones should start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Dr. Richard Anderson re-examined Jones this afternoon and then discussed the situation with Lions officials.

Because the Lions have a bye week in the sixth week of the season, Jones will only miss five games. Jones will be eligible to return on Oct. 21 in the home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The medical report on Jones is that his foot is almost completely recovered, but team official want to err on the side of caution and make sure he's in the best possible football condition before he returns to the field. Again, according to a source close to the situation, Jones is expected to return without losing any of his original speed or running ability.
NOTE: As stated above, he will miss 5 games (6 weeks), NOT 6 games.

Kevin Jones has offically landed on the PUP list. No question that he probably was going to end up on it. With Tatum Bell hurting his leg the other night, go get T.J. Duckett

Good news for K. Jones dynasty owners...the last thing you want to do is rush a runningback back from a lisfranc injury.

Actually Bell's shin injury was minor from what I understand. Duckett could vulture a short yardage TD or two, however. :pickle:

If anyone has any free time, I'm curious to know what yard line TJ Duckett's career TD's have come from. While I think Duckett's role may be minimal, I definitely think it's greater with Bell as the starter as opposed to KJ. I'm just curious how much Duckett vultures..if any?

Twenty-four (24) of Duckett's 33 career rushing TDs have come inside the 5-yard line :thumbdown:As importantly, he's converted better than 50% of his goal line (5yards and in) attempts; among the league's best over his career span.

Kowalski's word is not NFL policy.

Can't see Bell getting GL carries. I bet Duckett pops in a decent amt of TDs this year or Martz goes crazy throwing it insides the 5.

Short lived. This is great news for Kevin Jones owners. It all but assures that he will be 100% for week 7.
OKSo if Tatum blows up in the Martz offense throught week 6 he will be immediately benched upon KJ's return? At a minimum they will work KJ back in but unless Bell falls flat on his face early in the year, no way KJ is not in a RBBC.Martz is not the kind of guy that tinkers with things when they (or if they) are working. So if I am a KJ owner I am praying Bell does not shine. And as a Bell owner I gotta love his potential

I question that for two reasons. One is while I don't know what kind of shape he's in I know he's not going to be in football shape and that could take several weeks or longer. Secondly, was his injury not like 10 or 11 months ago? If so, I find it hard to believe that after all that time he's not well enough to play but that suddenly in 6 weeks he's 100% percent.

I agree with you here but I think this is better news for KJ owners. The worst thing that could have happened is they rush him back he plays at 50% for 3~5 games and goes on IR. This is a much better scenario. KJ needs to get right before he returns ot action.

I was thinking the same thing.

Bell faces the Minnesota and Chicago run defenses in 2 of those 5 games, and I doubt he'll shine then. He'll also be sharing time with T.J. Duckett.

Martz loves the power running and receiving abilities of KJ, as it gives him flexibility in his offense. Bell is a good runner, but not a power runner and not a great receiver. If 100%, Jones will reclaim the starting role.

He is close to 100% right now. Why should that comment be a surprise?

How do you know he's close to 100%? I'll answer for you, you don't. Neither do I. We do know one thing and the Lions do not believe he's ready to play right now and I find it difficult to believe 6 weeks is suddenly change him from someone who the Lions don't think is ready to play to 100%.

That's what I am reading into this as well. They anticipate him being ready by week 3 or 4, but don't want to handcuff themselves in terms of roster space, especially if they are off by a couple weeks.

How do you know that? B/c a PR person from the Lions said so or a coach or KJ or his agent. This is further evidence that the injury is serious and that he may never be fully healthy again. Its as if people don't even consider this an option.

Is he allowed to practice full speed before the 6 week period's over, or does he have to avoid all football contact? If he can practice full speed, he should be in as good football shape as L.T. is after skipping preseason games.I think the injury was in November/December, so it's been about 9 months. Week 7 will be late October, so close to 11 months after an injury that normally takes about a year to recover from.

That's not true. LT has been able to do all of his conditioning work during the off season and practice with the team. KJ has not been able to do his normal off season workout regiment so their situations are nothing similar.

Kevin Jones will never be in as good of shape as LT. That is what seperates LT from everyone else.

I guess I see this as increasing Duckett's value. I have him in a couple deep leagues and was coing to cut him in one to make room for something else, but I have NO faith in Bell's ability to perform or avoid injury. He couldn't do it in the RB friendly scheme in Denver and I don't expect he'll do it on a team with much less talent.

Duckett is anything but a lock to put up numbers, but with Bell being so fragile I would fully expect to see Duckett getting the goalline touches.

Now I have to cut someone else.

Kevin Jones.Honestly, do you think that the injury could be more severe then it is let on, especially b/c of him being on the PUP?

I trust what his Dr. said. He did say that Jones was almost completely healed. The Lions are playing it safe with Jones, as they should.

Where in a draft would you see Jones as a good move? I am drafting my 12 team, keep 3, draft tonight....and this is interesting to say the least. I also love the fact that he is on the PUP list. I wouldnt mind trying to grab him late, but when do you all think would be good??

Missing 5 weeks of the season (wk 6 is a bye week) does not constitute half the season. Twist it, or lmao all the smilies you want, but as a Kevin Jones owner I really like this news. It give Jones a little more time for his foot to be right.

LOL at the Tinker Bell pimpers...the guy sucks which is why the offensive coaches were pleading to Millen to keep Jones off the PUP list.

Trade Tatum after week one.

Assuming Jones actually played 10 games this year, I would say he's going to be better value on drafts this week than Bell in the 6th or 7th round

Way to avoid my question. If KJ owners think this is a good thing, than their homerism is clouding their judgement.

See this is already working out for Bell owners

A guy in my league has (RB)

S Jackson

C Portis

M Turner

B Jackson

He just put Portis on the block and essentially has 1 RB unless B Jackson is worth something

I explained I would give him Bell for Portis and advised the KJ was, just today, placed on the PUP

He said he would think about it....

Why not?

I would give Bell away just for the possibility of Portis actually being healthy this year.....which is highly unlikely

I don't think there is any chance his injury is worse than they say, or they would have put him on PUP before today. The coaches and beat writers who see him every day say he is close. The doctor says he is almost 100% healed. What more needs to be said?

SO what you are saying is that my RB6 possibly coming back healthy in week 8 and posting RB1-2 type numbers every week is a bad thing? What do you expect out of you RB6?

This is interesting...we're definitely a house divided on this one. Dodds and Joe both think Bell is a great value at current ADP and Dodds has been drafting Bell in the 6th and 7th rounds and is giddy about it. I think Bell in the 6th-7th isn't compelling value at all; save for leagues where you might go RB/RB/UTIL and 2 WRs.

Count me as struggling to see how this is in any way good news for Jones. He's going to miss the first 6 weeks of the season. This might be good news for him in 2008 but it's a disaster for 2007 IMO.

And I'd put zero stock in the "he's almost fully healthy and they expect him to return at 100%" This is standard company line speak most anytime a player is in this situation.

I would not be the least bit surprised to see Jones limited by this all season.

I'm not especially a Tatum Bell fan but this is a fantastic opportunity for him. And we all know opportunity is half the battle. Martz was raving about him early this month saying "He's the whole package. He's got so much juice to him. He can go. He's taken our offense and learned it so well. He doesn't make any mistakes. He's catching the ball extremely well. He's playing at such a high level right now."

I don't think he'll be Marshall Faulk but I think he'll be a huge value in many leagues.

My guess is that Portis went substantially earlier in most drafts, so this is a poor analogy. Most of us who drafted KJ, myself anyway, don't need him to do anything this year. He still has more upside than any other RB taken after the 6th round.

I don't know Joe, I see him as having the potential to score 3-4 TDs all season long.
