In my community at least it is happening pretty often sadly.Though, I am not sure about the uptick in attacks overall. But for there to be none of these kinds of attacks in my community to half a dozen within a week is somewhat problematic. How do we know it has become a bigger and bigger trend? I share some of Fennis's skepticism here. It's also reached such critical mass due to the "copy cat" factor. Kids see it on the news and start emulating it, and it gets to be a bigger and bigger trend. No, I know the Knockout Game ha been going on awhile. It' just that it's now reached such a critical mass in public consciousness that the national media can no longer cover it up and people downplaying it look a bit silly. You guys are acting like assault is a new thing.
Mainly since there seems to be more and more of these stories coming out. Maybe these incidents are happening anyway, but I have little doubt that the publicity is resulting in copycat crimes. Sadly, not unlike school shooting copycats. How do we know it has become a bigger and bigger trend? :suckerpunchlink:...police officials in several cities where such attacks have been reported said that the “game” amounted to little more than an urban myth, and that the attacks in question might be nothing more than the sort of random assaults that have always occurred. And in New York City, police officials are struggling to determine whether they should advise the public to take precautions against the Knockout Game — or whether in fact it existed.
“We’re trying to determine whether or not this is a real phenomenon,” Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said on Friday.
If there's no evidence that number of random assaults on strangers is any higher because of this game, then this is nothing more than this year's version SHARK ATTACK or AFRICAN KILLER BEES.What is the fascination with saying this has been going on forever?

Or it could be another alternative, as I noted earlier, that these assaults on completely random strangers have occurred in American cities a lot the past forty years whether you call them knockouts, wildings, or another name of your choice. It's the public consciousness of these assaults that is now far greater because the police and media are now finding it more difficult to cover-up the extent of these assaults due to technology. Now nearly everyone has video phone to potentially capture attacks and an avenue to tell the world what happened to them via the internet. Hell, some of the video postings and disclosures on the internet are by the assailants themselves bragging of their attacks. There are also now alternative news sources on the internet less afraid to address issues like these attacks that the mainstream media either intentionally or negligently failed to cover. The old media had their hand forced by the new media to more adequately cover a topic that most Americans, bar some outliers, find troubling. That's a good thing. If there's no evidence that number of random assaults on strangers is any higher because of this game, then this is nothing more than this year's version SHARK ATTACK or AFRICAN KILLER BEES.What is the fascination with saying this has been going on forever?

I would say that the percentage of people getting punched in the face by strangers is more or less the same in the past 50 years. I was randomly sucker punched 20 years ago and the police report mentioned the idea that the kids that were doing it were doing it for fun as they had hit a number of people. The number of old ladies being punched MIGHT be higher than it used to be. Keep in mind though, that the end result isn't often "points" as it seems that most people get robbed as well.Abel knew Cain as did most sucker punch recipients and deliverers in the past.Past sucker punch deliverers also didn't sucker punch based on scoring in a perverse game.Certainly not condoning or defending it, but the Sucker Punch has been around Abel jacked Cain. Would you guess that there are more or less complete strangers (without provocation and without intent to rob) getting punched in the face today compared to the days of Cain and Abel or, say, fifty years ago?

Mayor Nutter Says ‘Knockout’ Attacks ‘Will Not Be Tolerated Here’
CBS
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Mayor Michael Nutter was joined by other city leaders Monday evening in an attempt to stop the so-called “Knockout Game” from spreading to Philadelphia.
Nutter was joined by Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey, as they discussed the so-called game in which a person is randomly assaulted, while another person films it with their phone or other device.
With cases reported in other U.S. cities, including New York, Mayor Nutter says the city is working to stay ahead of the problem, but needs parents to do their part.
“This is not a game. You can seriously injure or possibly kill someone. Your child’s life will be dramatically changed, and probably yours as well as a parent. So let’s cut out the nonsense. There are many other things that people can do to enjoy themselves. This is not one of them,” Nutter said.
The Mayor says that anyone caught taking part in the “knockout” game will face charges ranging from aggravated assault up to third degree murder, but that’s not all.
“You’re also hurting another human being for no reason at all. There’s no excuse for this kind of behavior, it will not be tolerated here in the city. We will do everything we can to both prevent, but if someone does engage, we will catch you. You’ll be prosecuted, and your life will be changed dramatically,” he said.
The Mayor says that the District Attorney’s office supports the effort to prevent this game from becoming a common occurrence in the city, saying they will seek the most serious of charges and prosecute to the fullest.
Nutter urged parents to discuss the dangers and lasting effect the game can have, citing those type of discussions as a major factor in the reduction of flash mobs that became a problem in years past.
“Pay attention to what they’re doing, who they’re hanging with. Don’t get caught up in this group thing.
That’s what happened with those flash mobs,” Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said.
Last Friday, Philadelphia Police announced the arrest of a 15-year-old in connection with a “knockout” attack in Northeast Philadelphia earlier this month (See Related Story).
Investigators say a 15-year-old male has been arrested and they are searching for a second suspect for their roles in an attack outside a pizza shop in Fox Chase on November 11th.
The victim in the November 11th assault told Eyewitness News that he was walking out of a pizza shop when he was attacked.
“Someone asked me for a cigarette and by the time I got my hands out my pocket, I was getting hit by four kids,” Mark Cumberland explained.
Cumberland said he is still having difficulty seeing and has trouble breathing and swallowing.
“There’s no reason at all. I mean, I didn’t get robbed, they didn’t take nothing from me. They just beat me up.”
The 15-year-old has been charged with Aggravated Assault, Criminal Conspiracy and related charges. His name is not being released because he is a juvenile.
The suspects behind the “knockout” game have one goal in mind: knock out the victim with one punch. The victim is almost always chosen at random, an individual simply walking down the street.
Videos from cities around the country show people being punched and beaten at random.
Lower Merion Police say suspects Samuel Hayles and Markus January were arrested on October 29th, just moments after they allegedly ambushed and beat a 63-year-old man who was walking his dog. (See Related Story)
In another case in Lower Merion, an elderly man was also attacked when he was mowing his lawn outside of his home. The suspect in that attack is still on the loose.
Bruce Myer, a neighbor of the elderly victim, says, “A kid came up to him and just punching him in the mouth. He ended up lying in the street with his lawnmower.”
Myer says, “The kid did it on a dare. He said give me five dollars and I’ll knock that guy out.”
The elderly victim is now using a cane and a walker to get around. He has had to undergo multiple medical procedures.

Curiously, the USAToday buries the more accurate headline in the subtitle, "News outlets say there is no data to support notion that 'knockout game' is growing trend." The main headline carries with it the possible suggestion that the entire concept of the Knockout Game is a media myth, while the subtitle appears to acknowledge that the game, or some facsimile of it, exists but there's no data to support it's growing. The body of the story more accurately reflects the subtitle than the title, and it does not refute the possibility that it' growing. It merely says that crime stats are inconclusive regarding the trend allegedly growing.USA Today doing some Pulitzer work in here.

Knockout Games -- The Biggest Form of Cowardice
By Rev. Al Sharpton; November 25, 2013
Huffington Post
When a 78-year-old Jewish woman was walking down the street in Brooklyn earlier this month, the last thing she expected was to be punched in the face. Tragically, that's exactly what happened. The elderly woman was apparently the victim of what authorities are calling a "knockout game" -- where, according to police, an attacker or attackers aim to knock out a person with a single sucker punch. It is an alarming trend that is spurring outrageous incidents across the country. It is deplorable, reprehensible and inexcusable. It is insane thuggery, and it is unequivocally wrong. These kids are targeting innocent people, and in many cases specifically targeting Jewish folks. We would not be silent if it were the other way around, and we will not be silent now. This behavior is racist, period. And we will not tolerate it.
Several of these "knockout" incidents have already been reported in New York, and around the country. Many of the New York victims appear to be members of the Jewish community, but even in cases where race/ethnicity/religion aren't factors, it is still unconscionable. As I often state, no one -- black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, male, female, the elderly, children, gay, straight or anyone else -- should ever fear walking down the street. We live in a free and open society, but we also live in a nation where laws protect us from such vicious behavior. A 28-year-old Brooklyn resident was recently arrested for allegedly punching a 24-year-old in a reported "knockout" occurrence. We encourage police to thoroughly investigate each and every case, and bring these perpetrators to justice.
There is nothing funny or even remotely entertaining about attacking innocents walking down the street. This is not a "game"; it is inhumane behavior that has no place in our country or the world. When you start condoning it and you start to act like there's something funny about these types of actions, you set up the kind of crisis that leads to the demise of everyone. Diversity is one of the greatest strengths of this nation, and we must respect one another in a way that preserves and further develops this diversity. Therefore, when an injustice happens to anyone, it is the duty of all to speak up. Silence is akin to tacit acceptance.
This week, I will be meeting with other leaders to address our next moves regarding this crisis. As one who has fought for greater civil rights for all, I cannot watch this travesty unfold. We can discuss the many factors that may lead to this sort of destructive behavior, whether it be poverty, unemployment, etc., but at the end of the day, there is no excuse ever to bestow violence on others. There is no justification for brutally punching or attacking a person in this manner. These kids must be held accountable, and then they must receive the right guidance and mentorship to halt any further damage. In our own communities, we must work harder to spot disastrous behavior and intervene before anything horrific like these attacks take place. All of us need to push for better schools, job opportunities, after-school programs, recreation/community centers and more.
In my own life, I faced many challenges growing up. But as I watched my single mother scrub floors in order to support us, never once did I resort to violence or the type of thuggery we have witnessed in these cases. There simply is no excuse for it. Knocking out unsuspecting defenseless people, like that 78-year-old woman in Brooklyn, is the greatest form of cowardice. Each and every one of us should be disgusted and outraged by this. The only way we can continue on a path towards progress is when we raise our voices whenever and wherever injustice takes place.
And a grave injustice has undoubtedly befallen that elderly woman and the other reported victims of "knockout." It is our duty to stand up.
