Krista4's Beatles 1-25 List Thread! Count down will start Mon Feb 14 noon ET. Will take new lists til then... (3 Viewers)

After reading those write-ups, there is no way I can hang in this thread. 😂 I am like Chris Farley on the SNL skit where he interviews Paul: "Remember when you were in the Beatles? That was awesome!"

I am about halfway through reading @krista4 magnum opus thread. What a great thread! So well written and so much fun, and I learned more about the Beatles than I ever had, and learned a lot about music, as well. Krista, you should definitely put that together as a book, or primer on the Beatles, or something. You have a real gift for writing and the time and energy you put into that thread is much appreciated. Thank you!

I'll do my top 25 list, but I am afraid that recency bias is going to make choose a lot more recent songs since watching "Get Back".

Oh, you're not getting a pass on hanging in the thread!  You will be here, and we want to hear what you have to say!  (By the way, have not seen the Chris Farley #### and must watch; sounds hilarious.)

I wondered too if I might rank some of the songs from "Get Back" more highly now that I watched that.  Haven't started my updated rankings, so we'll see.

Huge thanks for the compliments on the other thread.

There will be no interesting comments from me but I will share some thoughts. Any writeup I do will be one's you definitely want to ignore. Not going to be able to touch what K4, Getz, Wikkid and the like post but I am putting time into this.

So far I've completed multiple listens to 5 albums.  I ranked my top 5 on each which will be way too many for some and eventually 5 will be too few for others but I'll adjust accordingly as I go.  It's going to be a chore when I start comparing albums. I won't use "recent" when referring to songs :)  but I will almost certainly have more songs from later releases simply because I think they are better/more mature/full/rich sounding.

Took a break today after Abbey Road and A Hard Days Night.

nfw homer.

I usually share a personal story if one applies.  Otherwise I am no rock historian like some in here - I just enjoy the great info!!

I still haven't seen "Get Back."  I want to and will, but I just really didn't want to get Disney to watch it. I'll buy the video and watch it. k4 mentioned something about a video recently, but I don't fully read her posts, so I'm not sure of details. 🙃 I've got some Beatles stuff (lunchbox, bag, socks, books, etc.) that I have accumulated over the years, a lot of it given to me by friends, and I'll add the video to my stuff.

I'm choosing my Top 25 on the scenario of if I could only listen to 25 Beatles songs for the rest of my life, which ones would it be, and I'll list them in the order of favorites. The list could change from day to day, but the day I submit it I'm not going to make any changes. I'm gonna let it ride.

I remember lunchbox chat in the thread... some cool lunchboxes, for sure. My favorite was this one.

I think you'll love the video when you watch it. I didn't think it would be hard to list 25 favorites, but then after reading the OG k4 thread, I had a new appreciation for a lot of the older songs. I used to take a lot of the earlier stuff for granted because it was what I grew up around, and it seemed kind of old and trite, if not classic. And since everyone who knows something in the OG thread seems to be a fan of the middle stuff, I gained a lot more appreciation for Revolver and Rubber Soul. Now, I'll be fighting with Binky to have 43 songs included.

Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane tells the tale of Lennon/McCartney in at least one sense - the internal vs the external.

life was never more important than how he felt about it to John Lennon and constantly reminded him he could never beat it. i was born to be the same way.

life was the thing in which he got to be Paul to McCartney, and that was more than enough. happiness did not make itself available to me til i rearranged myself to look at it that way.

I like that lunchbox. I had a Fonz shirt and poster when I was a youngster. Rubber Soul is my favorite Beatles album. It is tough to pick just 25. There is a song I want to add really bad, but I don't want to waste one of my slots on it. I always think of it as a lead into another song, and I Iove to hear it, but it is only around a minute and 19 seconds long, and so I think I'm gonna have to cut it.  Upon listening to it just now, I'm not sure that I can cut it. This stress is why I never did a Top 25 last time.

Beautiful.

I hesitated to commit, as I am in the middle of home renos but @krista4summoned me from another thread and if there is one person I do not want to let down around here ...

... I’ll make it happen.

   Love ya.  You know I expect the same commitment from Mrs. Punk, too.  ;)

Best in your home renos!  When you have time, tell us about them!

I have processed seven lists that contain 87 different songs.   Nine songs that didn't appear in 2019's list of 143 songs have already been added.

Remember to get your friends/family/etc to send in a list.    I won't post their name on the MB.  It'll be like Getzlaf15's Daughter, etc..

I tried to help OH get his list together tonight.  We had his top 25 based on the process I outlined before, but ordering those...  First he said his mind just doesn't work that way and he couldn't do it.  I said we could go through another "yes/no" exercise on those.  Nope.  I said we could just set up a series of head-to-head battles.  Nope.  Then I said, how about if we looked at it as, if you could only hear one of these songs for the rest of your life, which would it be?  That seemed to work and he started ordering them.  Got the top 10 done and will revisit it once the rest are in order.  Basically the same as your system!

Dibs on “That’s Someone’s Daughter’s List”

Penny Lane is my least favorite Beatles Song.  I don't even know why exactly, but the sound of it makes me physically ill.  There must be a sound or something that does it.  Anyway....

So you were the only poster who didn’t think Krista ranked it too low!

Worse than Revolution 9 is a strong statement.

I spent a couple of hours on my list last night. I had to stop myself from reshuffling before I went :loco:

My #11 didn't change

I've completed initial review/ranking of 8 albums

One thing I notice is that there are no really bad songs. I mean songs I just can't stand and turn off immediately.  I'm surprised at that. This would be super easy, barely an inconvenience for recent music. 2 good songs and the rest crap.   I haven't heard these albums in their entirety before and am impressed by the consistency.  Sure there are a number of songs I'd say are not memorable but they mostly have a nice  jam.

That said picking only 25 should be doable although the actual ranking 1-25 will be a different story I suspect.

Album Breakdown

Please Please Me - 2

With The Beatles - 1

Hard Days Night - 1

Beatles For Sale - 1

Help - 3

Rubber Soul - 1

Revolver - 1

Sgt Pepper - 3

Magical Mystery Tour - 1

Yellow Submarine - 1

Abbey Road - 3

Let It Be - 2

Past Masters 1 - 2

Past Masters 2 - 3

White Album is shut out.

Spoiler Alert! I used the now-canon MMT LP instead of the original EP. in my count above.

I didn't think about the albums when I made my selections. I'm a little surprised I spread them out across as many LPs as I did. Though..... 8 of the next 10 that missed the cut would have been on the first 4 albums or PM1.

I think I have 6 under consideration but I could see 4-5 of them outside the Top 25 (25-50ish).

Are singles covered by Masters?
Yes. Those 2 LPs tied up all of the loose ends of songs that didn't get included on the British versions of their albums when the catalog was consolidated in the 1980s.

If we were to throw away every album the Beatles made, just the songs on the two Past Masters would be a HOF career.

All this Lunchbox talk got me paranoid. Thought I’d better send a list to avoid “them” getting me in the psychic realm.

List was incredibly easy to do. 25, spot on the money. Thank you linesman, thank you ballboys and ballgirls.

So each of you here gave a list of 1-25 three years ago and hopefully you can do so again and bring some friends lists in also!  If you are not listed, it's because you've already posted in this thread.

I just went through all my Composite list posts from three years ago getting these names.  @Man of Constant Sorrow just killed it in those posts. RIP. Wish you were here.
ManOfSteelhead 2022 list is in the progress of being built.....

😂 I’m the anti-Uruk-Hai. I have 33 songs right now, and the few songs I do have from the earliest albums are the ones I see trimming to get to 25. I love the White Album, and bread and circuses, too, I guess.

Too many songs from Let it Be, too. Watching Get Back then reading the krista thread definitely had an influence on my choices.

I ended up with more from Let It Be on my long list than I would have thought going in. I suspect Get Back influenced me, too.

I emailed my music/movie friend Doug, whom I've mentioned in various threads here.

Me:  I'm going to need your top 25 Beatles songs in order of preference.  Deadline Jan. 30.  Thank you.

Doug:  #### you!!!!  EVERYTHING is now pushed off till the end of the month.

Hate to break it to you but your top 25 has 57 songs in it. 😉

only thing that'd cause me to change my original list might be watching Get Back and that wont arrive til next month (already pre-ordered, not as expensive as i thought @ $27/3 discs) and i dont like making lists anyway (tried to do my 100 fav songs this summer for y'all and almost short-circuited me nog) so i stand on my OG.
