Losing Fat and Gaining Muscle at the same time (1 Viewer)

The hardest part for me is going with no booze. Alcohol is loaded with carbs and lowers your metabolism, which is terrible for a 42 year old guy like me, even a high motor 42 year old guy.

Me misses beer lots. :(
Meh, you can take on one clear spirit an hour with basically no ill effects. Unless on a hardcore cut it's doable. Beer, though is another matter.

And IPAs are a whole other level of sin. :(

For me with the booze, I can build in and deal with the booze calories ok, it's what I eat with the booze that throws me off track.

Do squats at the minimum 2x a week. It's an anarobic & aerobic exercise.
I have had 3 hernias in my life. Not sure on the squats for me. I have been researching ways to mimic squats. Also I don't have a ton of weight at home. Only 100 lbs (2 of those adjustable 50lb dumbells)

I agree that are the best exercise but I'm looking for safer alterantives.

Would doing 20-30 minutes on elliptical actually set me backwards? I want get better wind. I actually got too tired to screw a while back and that absolutely stunned me.

Definitely for me. Booze is a trigger. I have a big trip planned to go see a couple ball games with the boys in June. I'm going to be plastered because I don't plan on drinking. But I'm drinking on that trip.

It's on. We are currently in negotiations to see how exactly we set up the beginning, tracking and eventually the winner.

Are there any good apps to set this up? What criteria should we use to determine a winner? I thought about some weightlifting benchmarks. But I'm going to be home using a bowflex.

Or is the winner just the biggest improvement in physical appearance? Meaning before and after pic ***gulp**
Funny, my boss and I basically just made this bet. Here are our terms.

1. 1k antie.

2. First person to lose 30 lbs. from initial weight wins 1k.

3. If second person reaches 30 lbs. mark within 14 days, $500 returned.

4. Winner weighs in six months later. If all weight gained back, all winnings returned. If >14 lbs. gained back then half returned.

5. Must consume 1200 calories/day as a minimum.

6. No weight loss/diet pills or enhancers. Work out supplements okay.

7. Weigh-ins 3x/week first thing upon waking up. Person may go to the bathroom but cannot do any other physical activity before weighing in.

Been doing this for 10 days. So far I'm in the lead as I'm down 6 lbs. and he's down 1 lbs. I've been doing it by trying to follow paleo (couple of slips here and there). He's cutting calories and actually working out doing some cardio (previously he really hadn't worked out for awhile). Due to my work hours and life commitments I really haven't changed how I exercise but am trying to do some form of cardio everyday.
Jesus, leave it to some lawyers to #### up a perfectly good weight loss challenge...
What's ####ed up about that? I thought we came up with some pretty good terms.

I use an elliptical almost exclusively for cardio and it's terrific. Not as massive a calorie burner as running, but much more forgiving on your jointy parts.

I had an abdominal hernia. I have the mesh inside of me holding my guts in. Although, it wasn't a major hernia, and was repaired lithroscopicaly. You don't need to do a ton of weight. Start out with lunges, goblet squats with a dumbell or kettlebell, or a bar without weights. Once you get the form mastered you can increase the weight. I wear one of those black lower back velcro belts sometimes when working out. you could get a regular lifting belt if your really concerned about another hernia.

Here is a cool interview of Mark Ripptoe, the creator of stronglifts. He says some interesting things about strength training.

I think we're going to look back 50 years from today and cringe at all the squatting that is constantly recommended now. just a hunch

I don't think squatting is bad, I just think so many people focus on the poundage instead of the body's path when performing it. It's such an amazing all body exercise that has so many moving parts that it's extremely difficult to maintain the form throughout the movement, especially when ego puts more weight on the bar than a person should be moving. IMO squatting is truly one of the most important exercises a person can do to stay fit. That being said, in my experience I would tell 90% of people that I've seen squatting to please stop as their form is destroying their body.

Edited to add: The older I get the more I realize Frank Zane was really on to something when he said the bolded:

Question: So what is your goal for each set of an exercise?

i2.gif

Frank Zane: My goal for each set is to make a lighter weight feel heavier. I move it in a stricter fashion and focus on a slower negative and a controlled, explosive positive. I'm putting more force into it. I don't believe in doing slow positives, I think these are a waste of time. But exerting enough force to take the positive to completion and then fighting the weight back to the starting position for the negative.

One of my issues with stronglifts is that he ramps weight far too fast on squats.
