I don't get embarrassed over liking any song. I don't know how I'd chose a song for this.

Mother####er I was trying to give people an easy out and get some awful songs into the mixtapes. I don't really get embarrassed either, but I can still think of terrible guilty pleasure songs. Don't focus on the embarrassing part. Not a good category?

Is my female blues artists over the last ten years category too easy?
I don't think easy is good or bad in this format.

Categories that are too hard or too restrictive are probably bad but we'll all see how things turn out.

I think there is a pretty long term thread in here for this. I think of it as if I were to like a Barry Manilow or Bay City Rollers song - I would not be proud to proclaim it over some beers with my friends.

Any recommended Gay Folk artists I can study up on?

ETA: ...so I can mulligan Rush
WTF does gay folk artists really mean? You mean confirmed or just suspected? Didn't Pete Seeger wear permanent knee pads?
It's an inside joke. Pick any ten influential folk/bluegrass bands from the last few years, and probably eight have at least two gay members or self-identify as a queer band. Queer folk is a play on the Showtime series. The cat was changed to bluegrass/folk. I had Newport in mind more than Nashville, but there's a lot of crossover between the three, so country fits here as well.

The gay is optional. Which is not to suggest it's choice not orientation. ;)

ETA: language filter

Thought I was in? I haven't checked in cause I've dealing with a sick kid since Tuesday night. Too late? What do I have to do?

Everybody (including Usual) has until 11AM EST on Thursday to lock in their final categories. Tim can start drafting after then (8AM PST) with no clock.
I'm slightly changing the Rush category. You still have to pick a Rush song, but the change is that you have to make an effort to pick a Rush song that you like, sorta like, or have a closer inclination to liking. If you absolutely despise everything Rush than you can pick any Rush song but you have to make an effort to pick one you like!

If the group consensus is I'm nuts, I don't care ...make an effort dammit!

Ok, I see I have until 11 AM this morning. Good. My topic is:

Best soundtrack song from the 80's that made a pivotal scene THAT much better. There's TONS of these.

I'll add you to the draft sheet.

We now have 22 drafters so everybody is allowed two mulligans

OK, without further ado, let's kick this draft off:

1.01 The Tallest Man On Earth "Burden of Tomorrow" (Scandinavian)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOlm4OIpx4s

Rumor has it that I wasn't born, I just walked in one frosty morn into the vision of some vacant mind.

One of the comments on Youtube was that this guy is the love child of Bob Dylan and Nick Drake. That seems as apt a description as anything. He's certainly a throwback to the days when the folkies haunted Bleecker Street. But it wouldn't work unless he didn't have his own vision, and great songwriting and performance to go with it. If you've never heard of this dude, enjoy.

Let's halt the category switching - stick with your guns.

And have we confirmed what chill bumps are?
Its a very broad category. The idea was a song that rocked hard enough or was emotionally meaningful enough to you personally that it gives you chill bumps (goose bumps, raise the hair on your arms, etc).

how much time between picks before someone is skipped?

Also put me on autoskip for today. I'll try to check in but work requires me to be offline a bunch today,

I have this as correct except for

Tanner - song you love but are somewhat embarrassed about if people knew

(new) Usual 21 - best soundtrack from the 80's that also made the scene much better

JZilla - really change it to "Animals" from solo acapella? Seemed confusing.

What's confusing?

Solo acapella is really very difficult, and going to bring about a lot of meh stuff if it's not widely mulliganed

Animal songs should be easy and fun

And have we confirmed what chill bumps are?
I'm still listed as having the athlete song.

Doesn't really matter to me at this point. Just looking forward to start drafting and listening
do you want athlete or guilty pleasures?
Doesn't matter. Looks like athlete was on your official list at the start of the draft. Let's stick with that.

1.03 - Led Zeppelin - Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You (baby, babe in title)

No youtube link needed for this one I assume. Let me channel Tim and try to come up with a reason I like it. It always makes me think of Rome, the way the sun hits the buildings, especially when I'm drinking vermouth.

1.02 Chatham County Line - "Crop Comes In" (Bluish Grass)

This is a bluish grass band from North Carolina, and I love them. Catch them live if you get a chance.
This is great stuff. We made it to Seattle late a few weeks ago so weren't able to take up your recommendation to see them.

Bummed that tim punted the mandolin category. I love mandolins.

That'll be my category with the "produced by" expansion.
Songs written by Prince (or any of his noms de plume) OK?
Sure, but it's more of the sound I was going for. The highly Prince flavored song without the full frontal Prince - you know what I mean? His tentacles have gone places some people might not realize. Musically speaking of course.

ETA: :oldunsure:
Good category. Plenty of options. Lots of women wearing lingerie, Some opportunities for "Con-tro-versy" with some of his pseudonyms.
Upon further review, a lot of the Prince collaborations from the 80s and early 90s are out of print and/or not on Spotify. I still like the category but it's going to make the final playlists more difficult if people draft something other than the usual hits.
So do I need to come up with something else?

Also, could you put the category list and the link to the spreadsheet in one of your lead posts on the first page of the thread?

No, we're rolling now. I was just disappointed that a lot of the obscurities I was thinking about appear to be casualties of the Artist's war with Warner Brothers.
