I gotta head out in a few minutes for a bit - am I OTC? I am ready.

I have a one song in particular I'd like to get, but I need to step out for a bit. Can someone who's picked already take a 1 song list?

Otherwise give me 10 minutes when my pick comes up and if I don't post a choice in that timeframe you can skip me this round and I'll make it up.

I said earlier that we wouldn't have a clock today but I'm willing to bend since the category nominations effectively confirmed people were in.

There's probably not going to be a lot of sniping.

1.10 - Punch Brothers - Another New World (Bluish Grass)

Song's apparently based on some poem by Edgar Allen Poe. It fits in a lot of different categories, but I'll leave it in Bluegrass for now since this is probably the only Bluegrass song I like enough to have on my mp3, and I like it a lot; though I initially had it pegged for the now deceased mandolin category. Song's brilliant imo.

I'll make my pick too.... Warning: Top Danny Elfman is topless in the live version I linked. I don't know why he thought that was a good idea. Everything else shows what was great about Boingo.

1.08 Oingo Boingo - No Spill Blood - Animals

The song is inspired by The Island of Doctor Moreau by HG Wells.

Lyrics:

Animals came from miles around
So tired of walking, so close to the ground
They needed a change, that's what they said
Life is better walking on two legs
But they were in for a big surprise

(What is the law?)
No spill blood
What is the law?
(No spill blood)

(And who makes the rules?)
Someone else
Who makes the rules?
(Someone else)

What is the law?
(No spill blood)
What is the law?
(No spill blood)
That's right

Who makes the rules?
(Someone else)
I said "Who makes the rules?"
(Someone else)

Rules are now written in the stone
Break the rules and you get no bones
All you get is ridicule, laughter
And a trip to the house of pain

(What is the law?)
No spill blood
What is the law?
(No spill blood)

(Who makes the rules?)
Someone else
Who makes the rules?
(Someone else)

We walk on two legs not on four
To walk on four legs breaks the law
What happens when we break the law?

What happens when the rules aren't fair?
We all know where we go from there
To the house of pain, to the house of pain
To the house of pain, to the house of pain
To the house of pain

Animals came from miles around
So tired of walking, so close to the ground
They needed a change, that's what they said
Life is better walking on two legs
But they were in for a big surprise

What is the law?
(No spill blood)
What is the law?
(No spill blood)

Who makes the rules?
(Someone else)
And who makes the rules?
(Someone else)

We walk on two legs not on four
To walk on four legs breaks the law
What happens when we break the law?

What happens when the rules aren't fair?
We all know where we go from there
To the house of pain, to the house of pain
To the house of pain, to the house of pain
To the house of pain, to the house of pain

OK, not sure if this flies. Just let me know and I'll re-pick.

Radiohead - Jigsaw Falling Into Place (Rock w/ 3+ movements)
I think this one is OK, but should not be used as a "model" for the category. After the transition from the opening Radiohead initiates a few more movements, but lets them fall back into the main groove quickly.
Yeah, it's a tougher category than I initially thought. There are a lot of songs with two distinct themes but a lot of the ones I remembered as A-B-A really just have an extended bridge.

So, I'm on deck here. Would it be horrible if I just made my choice now and if Scooby wants it he can have it (in which case I'll make it up later)? I really need to get somewhere and I don't want to hold things up.

1.12: Crosses - Jose Gonzalez (Acoustic post 1990)

This guy has a ton of good stuff, but this is my favorite. I wish I could find a higher fidelity recording to post.

How "rock" does it have to be? I have a great song w/3 movements in my head, but it's not really rock.

Knew there was a reason why I should get Prince out of the way early.

Would like to see more discussion on this category. I'm struggling with the concept as it relates to pop or rock.

90+% of songs that have gotten radio airplay the last 50 years have the same basic structure: AABA. A = verse/chorus B = bridge. There are variations - chorus first, hook in the first line, but it's usually the same recurring melody. On either side of the bridge there might be a guitar solo that is a variation of the melody. Not actual movements.

Listening to the song picked, to me the structure is:

A - Verse 1 (Just as you...)

A - Verse 2 (The walls...)

B - Bridge

A - Verse 3 (Before your far away...)

A - Verse 4 (Come on and let it out..)

B - Bridge

A - Verse 5 (A Jigsaw falls into place...)

Not being critical of the pick, just trying to understand what we mean by 3 movements.

I conceived of it as more than just a song jumping into its bridge and then jumping back out. But in some songs, the bridge veers far enough "off course" that it does pretty stand on it's own as a movement.

Thinking of it as "songs that have 'mini-songs' within them" ... does that help?

Sent you a PM.

Can I please get a few clarifications on the categories?

  • Does Female Blues song have to be strictly blues or classic blues? Can it just have a bluesy feel?
  • Awful lyrics that you still love? Am I supposed to love the song with awful lyrics? Or do I have to love the awful lyrics specifically?
  • Name/nickname of athlete. I’m guessing the name/nickname simply has to mentioned in the song, correct? There aren’t too many songs out there where athletes are named in the title.
  • Post-1990 instrumentals – there are a ton off jazz instrumentals but I’m guessing you’re looking for rock. As long as I make a case (artist previously did mainly rock –or- the song is rock-ish) I’m guessing that would be okay, correct?

Yes, athlete needs to be specifically mentioned by name or nickname either in the song title or in the song lyrics. Needs to be a real athlete.

I don't recall rock being specified. I had some trance in mind for this.

1.05 - Ben Folds Five - For All The Pretty People (Acoustic 1990-2014)

Some salty (NSFW) language at the beginning, but it is not really part of the song. Sorry this is the only way I could find it on YouTube. Spotify has it in all it's glory and I'll use that for my mixtape.
this link will start it at 54:12 http://youtu.be/IDB6caPWUl8?t=54m12s after all the fun
I mislabled my category, sry - Should have been post-1990 instrumentals

The blues song can have elements of soul, rock, country, folk, jazz, etc. in it.
