\\m// Official Dealer's Choice Music Mixtape Draft (1 Viewer)

Make-up picks:

5.19: "Unbelievable", EMF (Scream)

For this category, it will probably be unusual that the scream is, in fact, intentionally subtle on the recording. EMF sampled Andrew Dice Clay screamng "OOOOOH ... what the f### WAAAS THAT?!?" from one of his stand-up performances. The sample is broken into three pieces and played in the background during the choruses (and a few other times, too)..

.
I saw EMF at a KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas show and they were the only band that made no attempt at even pretending to do an acoustic set. They came out with their amps set to 11. It was odd, but OTOH I still remember their set to this day.

Surprisingly, Wikipedia has the line-up of all the shows, check out this line-up, I was in my element.

December 12, 1992 Adam Ant, David Byrne, Cause and Effect, The Cult, dada, Duran Duran, EMF, The Farm, Michael Penn, The Rembrandts, Seal, Soul Asylum, The Soup Dragons, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Suzanne Vega, The Violent Femmes

7.07 Times Like These - Dave Grohl

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BjXrKjMPFQ

Song information[edit]The lyrics discuss how Dave Grohl felt "like I wasn't entirely myself" during the three-month hiatus the Foo Fighters entered following the tense and unsatisfying first recording sessions for One by One, as well as his uncertaintity about the future of the band.[2][3] The lyric "I'm a new day rising" is a reference to the album New Day Rising by Hüsker Dü, one of Grohl's favorite groups.

"Times Like These" is in D mixolydian mode in the key of D major and the section that begins at 0:13 is in 7/4 time. The chorus of the song is also grouped in bars of 3 rather than the regular bars of 4.

After the album version ended its run on the charts, a solo acoustic version of the song performed by Grohl was released and had some success on pop and adult contemporary radio but generally it enjoyed great success on rock and alternative radio just like the original electric version. The entire band performed a version of the song with jazz pianist Chick Corea during theGrammy Awards in 2004

gotta say that the list of #1 albums in the US is pretty ####in embarrassing to look at.
Roger that. And it gets down right putrid about 1992.
When throwing out the category, I figured that most people would be looking at 60s through the mid-90s (at the latest) for albums. Didn't expect there to be too much controversy around the topic, since all you gotta do is look at Wiki for how the album - and all its released singles - charted across the globe.
I think the category is fine and you've made the chart criteria very clear.

It's just a pain for me to find a deep cut from Ace of Base - The Sign, unless someone else can find a Scandanavian album that went to number 1
Lars Ulrich?
I thought of that. He moved to the US when he was 17, but the other members would have to go a bit further back to trace Scandanavian ancestry.

Cliff Burton did die in Sweden, but not even I'm that much of a dick to use that as a Scandanavian factor.

There is one other choice I can see, the Mamma Mia soundtrack, and not because of Abba songs, but the fact that Stellan Skarsgård "sung" 2 tracks.

Ultimately I'm left with:

An Ace of Base deepcut or

"Our Last Summer" - Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård, Amanda Seyfried & Meryl Streep

Take a Chance on Me" - Julie Walters, Stellan Skarsgård & Colin Firth

Pretending Metallica are Scandanavian

I don't know what's worse.

How's the Scandinavian Wu-Tang connection going?

If Snoop Dogg is part of the Wu Tang, I'm golden. Did find a 1971 track though that isn't a Eurovision failure or with 16 å, ä, or ö. Will post shortly

C'mon guys (and simey). I draft a song about two miners eating a man (or donkey) named Timothy and get zero reaction.

Destined to either mulligan the category or be stuck with Eurovision rejects or native language Norwegian, I searched through my chart books.

Until Abba came along in 1974, Scandanavians had forayed into the British charts less than 5 times, most barely charting.

I was even considering Victor Borge, but he didn't release anything in 1971.

1971

6.06 - Titanic - Sultana - 4:02

In October 1971 Titanic reached Number 5 in the UK Singles Chart, with their instrumental track, "Sultana".[1] It was performed in the style of the then popular band, Santana.

Ok, gonna change another pick. :bag:

Since Radiohead isn't on Spotify, I'm gonna throw it back. Here is my replacement and the other ones I owe:

I like the Kings of Convenience. They sound like early Simon & Garfunkel, and that's a darn good thing to sound like!

I looked on Billboard.com and on Wikipedia, and can't find any mention of this song ever charting. It doesn't have a Wikipedia entry for the song itself and it's not listed as an official single, so I'm going with it unless someone tells me otherwise. The album hit #1 on the Billboard 200 chart for the week of August 21, 2010. This has, over time, become one of my favorite songs of theirs. And it's somewhat chess-related, which always earns bonus points.

7.20 - Arcade Fire - "Deep Blue" (#1 Deep Tracks)

You could never predict it,

That it could see through you.

Kasparov-Deep Blue, 1996

I considered a number of tracks from that album for the category, such a great album from top to bottom.

I was surprised at the number of official singles off of it, though. I knew this one is a fairly anonymous song so it should hopefully be ok.

Yeah pretty rare for a rock album to have 6 singles released from it, afaik.

It is a really a good album.

All the Young Dudes (written by David Bowie) has excellent lyrics. What the #### are you talking about?
Great song, crap lyrics. Sorry, you're wrong.
No I'm not. The lyrics are poetic. Very Dylanesque. They roll off the tongue great. "My brother's back at home with his Beatles and his Stones"- love that.
Ian Hunter's spoken counterpoint to the last few choruses look ridiculous when written but Mott manages pulls them off on the record

I don't think those are written lyrics though. He's just improvising. Those aren't really part of the lyrics of the song.

Agreed. I just looked up the lyrics on a web site and saw them written there in all their parenthetical glory
