\\m// Official Dealer's Choice Music Mixtape Draft (3 Viewers)

My favorite wu tang song so I'll just take it now

Protect your neck, Wu Tang Clan, song with an athlete in it

Ill link it later

I smoke on the mic like smoking joe frazier

Yeah, with the Prince thing I wasn't really thinking straight cover songs. But if that's what you want to go with, it's o.k.
I'll change mine to a Prince protege group. I had it down between 3 and couldn't pick so I just went with the Keys cover.

Dammit I think I just got sniped. I was going to take "Protect Your Neck", because I found a rendition of it with the Roots, an acoustic hip hop band. What the #### am I gonna do now? What a terrible category.

Round 10 - Saturday

Round 11 - Sunday

Rounds 12, 13 - Monday

Rounds 14, 15, 16 - Tuesday

All remaining picks - Wednesday

Redacted

Right in the middle of the glam era - I wish the guy would have been able to stick around. Lyrics aren't as weird as "The Slider" off the same album, but I like the song better. Slider brings back good memories of just coming into the teen years and getting some freedom from the parents.

Ooh, oh man, ooh
Telegram Sam, Telegram Sam,
You are my main man
Golden Nose Slim, Golden Nose Slim,
I know's where you 'bin, oh

Oh, ooh

Bobby's alright, Bobby's alright
He's a natural born poet, he's just outta sight
Jungle faced Jake, jungle faced Jake

Oooh, Samson and Christoph, what a pair!

Bobby's alright, Bobby's alright

Automatic shoes, automatic shoes
Give me 3D-vision and the California Blues
And me I funk but I don't care

Awful Lyrics (but I love the song/video anyway)

Let's translate some of this.

Bubbles and water
Legs up for hours
My goldfish is under me...

I'm fed up with loneliness
With my uncle overstressed...

Fed up with the rain, the plane...
That makes me throw up again.
I'm fed up with all cynics
Bathing caps and all critics
I'm fed up with being fed up! Poor me!
8.xx Alizee -- J'en Ai Marre
Agree about the video/Alizee, but getting English translations of foreign songs is a bit dodgy.

Some are literal translations of words, without understanding of the mother language.

Not all languages work like English

Ramsay Hunt Experience said:
Yeah, the Prince category isn't my category. But I didn't read it as encompassing covers like the Robyn cover. Of course, I understand that was probably the only option that JML had considering his all-Scandinavian theme.

Keys is defensible. She's not a protege, per se, because she was famous before doing much with Prince, but she did induct him into the Rock and Roll HOF (and Prince played the introduction at his shows). I think they've at least appeared at shows together.

I'm just serving prior notice that the first guy to pick Foo Fighters' Darlin' Nikki cover will get booed lustily.
Songs from acts in the Prince/Minneapolis lineage, or produced by Prince, without Prince being the featured vocalist
I think we're doing this wrong. Shakira lists Prince as a primary influence but that's not the lineage. Posting the Alizee made me think of Shakira and I put it up. I'm throwing it back for something directly in the lineage.
Yeah, I didn't read enough into the category.

I just saw the desciption Prince songs w/out the Artist

I'm going to leave it with Robyn for now, but will look for Scandanavian acts in the Prince/Minneapolis lineage, or produced by Prince, without Prince being the featured vocalist

Back to Norway

This is a much easier category for Scandanavian songs, but I had to find a place for A-Ha in this draft and Morten Harket has one of the most beautiful sad voices going around.

The only problem is the track to pick. A lot of A-Ha's songs are really depressing and sad with upbeat music, I had to pick the A-Ha cover of the old Everly Brothers song, written by Carole King and Howard Greenfield. A-Ha do a great job and got a big worldwide hit from it (US excluded)

8.06 - Crying in the Rain - A-Ha - Sad Songs - 4.25

Slider was post-college for me, and a great album. And these are awful lyrics to a great song. Good work.

Now to Iceland. This was the song that introduced Bjork to the world and if this isn't the definition of chill bumps I don't know what is?

Also fits well into the scream category and Scandanavians obviously

This would also be easy to slot into the Poor lyrics one, as it advocates a 5 year olds love affair with a 50 year old man on his birthday.

According to Björk, "Birthday" is a "tasteless pop song" about a five-year-old girl who has a love affair with the man next door, who is celebrating his fiftieth birthday.[1] The chorus features Björk singing a wordless melody.
I'm going to put it into the

Awful lyrics that you still love

category though, as it is hard to see anything more repulsive and especially awful in lyrics that a 5 year old girl with a 50 year old man, but the song and voice are still chilling.

She's got one friend
He lives next door
They listen to the weather
He knows how many
Freckles she's got
She scratches his beard
.......

Today's is her birthday
They're sucking cigars
He got a chain of flowers
And sows a bird in her knickers

They're sucking cigars
They lie in the bathtub
A chain of flowers

 Sorry. That was confusing. My father was Nam era.

No, just when I got into it. An intern where I worked noted that I really liked T. Rex on the radio and suggested the album.

I could have posted the english version. I don't think anything is lost in translation there.

I thought we added a 23rd category. Did that not stick?
The 23rd category was Karma Police's: "a song from an album that most influenced your musical tastes". We kept Usual21's "80s movie soundtracks category" and added a third mulligan.

OK point taken on the end game of the draft. I suppose I was rushing things a bit. There are still a lot of picks being made and the thread has pretty much stayed on the first page.

1 pick Saturday, Sunday and Monday. We'll see where we stand after that.

Suggestion: after the draft is complete, everybody creates a 20 song mix for their respective category nomination of songs not drafted.

Rush guy, you're excluded. Pretty sure that even revenge-minded Mexican drug lords are incapable of imagining the horror of a Rush mix of 21-40 songs.

I was planning on making a few spotify playlists. Gayfolk, sad, and beatlesesque. Because there's lots of fresh (to me anyway) stuff there that I like. I haven't uploaded a mixtape since megaupload imploded. With spotify, what's the point?

Spotify is $10 a month, I think there is a free version as well but I think it's kind of crappy. I just pay the $10 and they have about 90% of everything you'd ever want to listen to

I'm doing a bunch of the playlists as well. Not all, but most

Not sure I have the energy to come up with 20 more animal songs, but maybe

Spotify is free on your laptop/computer. You have to pay for mobile devices. You can also pay for no commercials but they are not bad. I use the web version so there was nothing to download. It is awesome. I just started using it in september. Love it

 spotify.

Its brought newer music back into my life. Free veraion, downloaded- the commercials are a small pain, every 4 or 5 songs, but I listen while working so I don't really hear them

I've subscribed to Spotify for like 15 months now and I've probably bought less than 5 albums since then. Aside from a few bootlegs and mixtapes, pretty much everything in my iTunes library is on Spotify....

If you're listening to music all day like I am, it's a no-brainer. Best (monthly) $10 I've ever spent.

Going into the wayback machine to Kanye's first album with this one. Pretty sure I've drafted it in FBG drafts before, but #### it, I love this song. It's not the orchestral narcissistic Kanye that we've become accustomed to...this is just 4 solid rap verses, 2 from Jay Z, 1 from Kanye, 1 from J. Ivy. J. Ivy's verse is basically a preacher's spoken-word sermon.

8.xx - Kanye West - "Never Let Me Down (feat. Jay-Z and J. Ivy)" - religious songs by non-religious artists

Also features a solid athlete reference from Jay-Z....every 4th quarter, I like to Mike Jordan 'em

My teenager is such a music junkie she'd get frustrated if I didn't keep her in a steady supply of Itunes cards. I think it's great. She watches less than three hours of tv a week. Video games have never been a big thing for her. $10 a month for Spotify is saving me money and getting us way more music. We share the account, which only rarely creates an issue. Neither of us has purchased music in over a year, but we're both listening to new stuff constantly. Sharing has caused us to open horizons by listening to each others playlists. She went through a grunge phase that just made me happy. Now she wants to know everything there is to know about the 60s and 70s. I've shown her this draft and she said she was going to fill out the categories this weekend and try to get a group of facebook friends to start doing music drafts. Spotify

I'm throwing back Alizee and Shakira. I guess it was guilty pleasure day yesterday. The following keep my mix sensible.

Sad

If you've been through it with a loved one... so very very sad. Hell, even if you haven't.

8.xx My Chemical Romance - Cancer

#### Cancer.

Beatlesesque

Speaking of grunge. I never thought about it until researching, but a favorite Soundgarden song fits this category. I was looking for what someone in this thread mentioned being missing -- early beatles sound. There's plenty from the 60s and 70s. Later efforts are a little heavy or too cheesy... just from what I found. I like a couple discoveries from this draft and have been on a beatlesesque kick (with the aforementioned daughter). I have about 30 nice ones that fit, but...

9.xx Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun

Catching up again...

Religious/Non

Could change this to 1971. Man, I had a blast reliving this jam. I was just scanning old prog standards for my mix and bam. I haven't heard it in so long it felt new again.

10.xx Jethro Tull - Hymn 43

All good picks - nice.

10.xx "Love...Thy Will Be Done" Martika - (Prince related)

Co-written and produced by Prince

“I wanted to work with him and had a message sent through to his camp. He responded favourably so I flew to Paisley Park and we sat and talked”.

For the trip she took along her lyric book. “I had a notebook with a lot of lyrics,” she said. “‘Love Thy Will Be Done’ was a prayer that I had written in my notebook. I showed him some of my stuff and he said ‘would you mind if I borrow your book for a few hours’. I said ‘cool, no problems’. He asked if he could photocopy a few things that he liked and I had no problem with that. I had no idea what the process for collaborating on music with him would be because it is always different with everybody. For him, he said ‘I have photocopied a few things. Why don’t you just let me live with this for a bit and we’ll go from there’. So I flew home to L.A”.

About a week later, Prince made contact again. “A fax came through with a song with a bunch of my lyrics with some of his lyrics. The next day I received a cassette. (Now we are really dating ourselves). There were several songs, basic tracks with just drums, bass and some changes with background vocals. That’s how I first heard it. My prayer was turned into ‘Love Thy Will Be Done’ and from there he sent me the master”.

The remainder of the song was done in Los Angeles. “I went into the studio in L.A. with the people that I was working with and started working on my vocal. After that he sent me the rest of the copies. I never went back to Paisley Park to work with him. I just finished the music with different people that I knew. That’s how it came together. It was a strange process.
