MAD - Artist - Round 4 - #1's have been posted (4 Viewers)

I'm staking my idea for the themed countdown whenever we have it. I think @New Binky the Doormat will like it.

Top 31 songs from albums produced and/or engineered by Todd Rundgren.

No more than one song per album, but artists may surface more than once if he produced/engineered more than one of their albums. There will be a few selections of his own material, but it will mostly feature other artists.

"Dear God" will not be on it, as my opinion of that song is similar to @tuffnutt 's opinion of "Shiny Happy People."
I’ve got more than half the selections identified already.

How much of Todd’s own material appears will depend on the Spotify availability of the albums from the other artists.

Robyn - Last 5 Out

36 - Robyn, La Bagatelle Magique - Love Is Free ft. Maluca
Robyn is a frequent collaborator. Vastly different songs and styles.
There are at least 10 collaborations in my final 31.
This song is a dance number, which I have plenty of in the final mix.
Nice pillow fight

35 - Röyksopp featuring Robyn - The Girl And The Robot

This song finished high in my Röyksopp list. It would have finished high in this list.
5 or 6 of the Röyksopp/Robyn collaborations would make this list, but we’ve already seen them.
Only 1 will make the final 31 as its much more representative of Robyn than the Norwegians.

34 - Robyn - Do You Really Want Me (Show Respect)

This was Robyns second single. She was only 16 and the record cover image is just wild at how young she looks
This was from her debut album, of which we will see several tracks in the top 31.
There is a heavy 90s R&B dance pop style here. She co wrote this with the producers.

33 - Robyn and Jenny Wilson - List of Demands

This would have been much much higher if there was an official recording or a version on Spotify
It’s an absolutely cracking cover of the high regarded Saul Williams song.
Robyn just dominates Jenny Wilson here.

32 - Robyn - Fembot

The Body Talk trilogy will be heavily represented, but some had to make way.
This somg was easily in the list until it had to make way for another song.

So I've just done an actual count of what i'd tagged tracks as, and with just Pablo Honey needing a relisten, I've got 23 "in" tracks and 15 "not quite" tracks, so one has to hope that their first album has a lot of bangers I didn't appreciate the first time around otherwise this might get tough, unless I go heavy on B-sides

I will say that this is impossibly tough to be objective. I have only included 6 tracks as "in" from each of The Bends (possibly only kept off my favourite album of all time from a top tier record from a top tier band which has very timing specific synergy with me) and OK Computer, which is probably top 5, and I'm judging the entirety of their remaining back catalogue by those lofty standards. What I guess will happen is that I'll get another <5 from Pablo Honey and what limited knowledge I have from their B-sides, then promote from their newer material stuff I have listed as just out on account of being possibly unduly harsh

Your standards may be too high to be a middle aged dummy

Yeah. What's wrong with b-sides? I triy to include deep tracks so maybe people can find new, cool stuff.

Exactly, ive included many B Sides.
Stranglers, Sweet, Tears for Fears, Royksopp all definitely.

Robyn surprisingly shows no imagination on her B sides at all, including, if you are lucky, album tracks.
Or you could listen to 6-20 different DJs remix/ruin the original.

All 5 of these MMJ songs would be in my top 31.

MMJ is the band I've seen in concert the most often and one of their shows is my #1 of all time, but.....I have attempted to create an MMJ MAD31 playlist but I don't love any album after Z so I can't get to 31 songs that spans their entire career. I hope your playlist convinces me that I'm wrong......looking forward to this one.

I Will Sing You Songs would have made my top 31 (It Still Moves would have been heavily represented). It's one of their most emotional tunes and features one of Jim James' best vocals.

At Dawn was my first exposure to the band. A friend burned a copy of it for me after I had heard one of its songs and loved it. Xmas Curtain is as good an example of any of the airy vibe that makes for a unique listening experience. I've never cared much for Honest Man, though. I find it too screechy -- and it's a jarring departure from the rest of the record.

The Tennessee Fire has always been a tough record for me to judge because of its extremely low-fi sound. I enjoy its songs more in concert than on record. Nashville to Kentucky is pleasant but would have benefited from the kind of production and arrangement that the At Dawn songs got. They Ran, though, is one of the two clear standouts from this album (hopefully the other is in your top 31). It was the first glimpse of how soulful James and co. could be.

You don't love The Waterfall? I think it's up there with It Still Moves and Z.

Just finished watching. I don't think it's hyperbole to say that George Clinton is the father of modern music. He took in everything and everybody, funkified it all and then sent it back to the world. Still doesn't make me like 'gangsta' rap, though.

p.s.--it's also not lost on me that 'funkified' didn't get flagged as a misspelled word and further demonstrates his influence on our culture.

Daysleeper- R.E.M

“Daysleeper “ was the first studio taste that fans got from the band post Bill Berry and it was released as the lead single from Up. Great song that just missed the cut.

This is probably a top five song of theirs for me, but I understand there are just so many greats to choose from! Unenviable task.
Yeah... I'm undoubtedly going to miss many people's favorites... Just too many great tunes to pare down to 31.

Our Lady Peace

March 10, 1998. Aged just 15 years old my best friend's dad taxied him, me , and one other friend to a dingy club in Cleveland (I didn't grow up here). It was the first concert I ever attended with all sorts of butterflies fluttering in my stomach. It was the first of probably 100+ over the next decade as this became a part of my life. And little did I know 3 others I would befriend once moving to Cleveland > a decade later were also there that night. Great minds huh...

But anyway, I didn't think about it at the time, but as I've been re-listening to this group pretty much non-stop over the last month it occurred to me I was motivated by The Tea Party. These guys hit it bigger in the US than them though. They were probably in my top 5 for a significant chunk of time between that first show and the mid aughts. I've seen them 6 times, but after the last one probably not again. Their signature sound is Raine's countertenor nasal falsetto, but to the surprise of no one that does not age well. He's 54 now and just can't hit those notes anymore. I've been reminded spinning back through the catalog just how special it was at its peak though.

It may be too much for some and I can already feel Eephus cringing about their use of the snare drum, but I think this list will net more than a few new hearts from this crowd.

My list is my favorite 31, so there are some albums not included. Their early stuff is so good.

I did a mix of live and studio versions to try and keep the playlist under 3 hours.

Yeah, Honest Man is a bit screechy, but i still like it.

I think I have 4 songs from Tennessee Fire and 5 from At Dawn.

I will include some live Youtube links for a few of those early lo-fi songs.

Personally, Radiohead has a large number of B sides and unreleased songs that I consider top tier compared to other bands.

The Walkmen are another favorite of mine whose earlier records I prefer to the newer ones—-not nearly as skewed as MMJ but at least a third of my top 31 would probably come from their first two albums.

A good chunk of what Talking Heads and the Chili Peppers (just to name two) did came from Clinton's crew. And the influence on hip-hop is immense, rivaled only by (maybe) James Brown.

MA-D Round 4: Candlebox

History

Candlebox is placed into that 2nd tier of Seattle-area 90s grunge acts. Led by singer Kevin Martin, the original lineup (guitarist Peter Klatt, bassist Bardi Martin, and drummer Scott Mercado) produced a phenomenal debut album in 1993, also named Candlebox that finished 4xPlatinum and had three songs that hit the Top 10 in the Mainstream.

Of course, life past that first album may be fairly unknown to many of you. If not then, then almost certainly their career arc after 1995’s Lucy and 1998’s Happy Pills. Mercado left the band between those albums (replaced by Dave Krusen very briefly) and Bardi Martin left to earn a law degree in 1999. Not too long after, Candlebox was disbanded, and there was a chance that this was the end of their story.

In 2006, Rhino released a “Best Of” album for Candlebox, which prompted the (original) band to come together again, adding Sean Hennesy on rhythm guitar. The five would only be together briefly, as Bardi Martin left again to continue his education, replaced by Adam Kury. After a few delays, Into the Sun was released in 2008, exactly 10 years and 1 day after their previous album.

Thanks to tours and side projects, it would be a few years before we heard from them again. In 2012, they released Love Stories & Other Musings, featuring 9 original songs and 5 re-recordings of some of their biggest hits. Naturally, only the former was considered for this countdown. This time, between albums the band split ways with its label. Klatt and Mercado left again to focus on the band Lotus Crush, though the parting was seen as mutual. Hennesy also left, meaning two new members plus Krusen returning on drums.

Eventually things clicked enough, paving the way for 2016’s Disappearing in Airports. A live version of (mostly) that album followed later in the year. The original lineup did a “one-off” reunion in 2018 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Candlebox. For 2021’s Wolves the lineup was Kevin Martin, Kury, Brian Quinn on lead guitar, Island Styles on rhythm guitar, and Robin Diaz on drums. Diaz left afterwards, replaced by BJ Kerwin. That stayed for what the band have called their final album (thanks to lack of support and the cost of touring, according to Kevin), The Long Goodbye, released in 2023. This was followed in June of this year by A Little Longer Goodbye, with the 10 songs from The Long Goodbye, 2 new live versions of songs from that, and 3 new tracks. Currently they’re still touring, but from what I can tell, only a few dates remain.

Style
Though there’s certainly grunge in their catalog – especially early on – overall they fit more comfortably into hard rock. Naturally, there’s a wide array of influences here too. Blues, alt-rock, even a little glam. There are tracks that’ll definitely remind you of other bands. A few should make you wonder if I’ve snuck in another band until Candlebox goes their own way with the song. I’ll still say that their first album was strongest from top to bottom (and thus will have the most representation), but I’m looking forward to showing you some songs you had no idea existed. I’ll get to the full breakdown when I submit (hopefully today, but looking more likely to be Wednesday), though as a teaser I’ll say I’m planning on 32 tracks. You’ll see what I mean.

Artist 2: LORD HURON

I won't be posting a ton about them as we go. I have talked about them a bit in other formats and have stated that Strange Trails is one of my favorite albums of the last decade. This was the artist I had planned on doing after Mastodon, but I was doing the under 1M thing and was shocked they had so many listens. I figured I would throw them in here since I am already breaking that rule with Journey and then get back to lesser known/listened to bands.

Honestly they don't have a ton of material so before I started I thought I would have to stretch to hard to get to a good 31. What I found is EPs and live performances that I didn't know existed and an album I hadn't gotten to. I also ended up falling hard for the album right before Strange Trails as well, so that is why I wanted to share that in a playlist as well.

We will get a heavy dose of those two albums (I think 15-16 songs from those?) with the rest coming from their other 2 albums and a sprinkle of various EPs and soundtracks. If you aren't familiar, what you'll hear in the last 4 out below, this is not what I was talking about in my Journey write up as my usual sweet spots for music. This is more singer/songwriter than I usually listen to, so as songs come out I am going dig more into the lyrics and post stuff that I gravitate to.

I hope most will like this last-minute addition to the playlist. At least RW will have the Journey playlist. ;)

YOUR OTHER LIFE

WE WENT WILD

MIGHTY

THE STRANGER

In the end I didn't use too much from their earlier EPs. The random one offs are things I found on soundtracks or live EPs. We Went Wild was the last cut. I liked the Vampire Weekend vibe, but in the end something more their sound at the last cut.
