MA-D Round 4: Candlebox
History
Candlebox is placed into that 2nd tier of Seattle-area 90s grunge acts. Led by singer Kevin Martin, the original lineup (guitarist Peter Klatt, bassist Bardi Martin, and drummer Scott Mercado) produced a phenomenal debut album in 1993, also named Candlebox that finished 4xPlatinum and had three songs that hit the Top 10 in the Mainstream.
Of course, life past that first album may be fairly unknown to many of you. If not then, then almost certainly their career arc after 1995’s Lucy and 1998’s Happy Pills. Mercado left the band between those albums (replaced by Dave Krusen very briefly) and Bardi Martin left to earn a law degree in 1999. Not too long after, Candlebox was disbanded, and there was a chance that this was the end of their story.
In 2006, Rhino released a “Best Of” album for Candlebox, which prompted the (original) band to come together again, adding Sean Hennesy on rhythm guitar. The five would only be together briefly, as Bardi Martin left again to continue his education, replaced by Adam Kury. After a few delays, Into the Sun was released in 2008, exactly 10 years and 1 day after their previous album.
Thanks to tours and side projects, it would be a few years before we heard from them again. In 2012, they released Love Stories & Other Musings, featuring 9 original songs and 5 re-recordings of some of their biggest hits. Naturally, only the former was considered for this countdown. This time, between albums the band split ways with its label. Klatt and Mercado left again to focus on the band Lotus Crush, though the parting was seen as mutual. Hennesy also left, meaning two new members plus Krusen returning on drums.
Eventually things clicked enough, paving the way for 2016’s Disappearing in Airports. A live version of (mostly) that album followed later in the year. The original lineup did a “one-off” reunion in 2018 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Candlebox. For 2021’s Wolves the lineup was Kevin Martin, Kury, Brian Quinn on lead guitar, Island Styles on rhythm guitar, and Robin Diaz on drums. Diaz left afterwards, replaced by BJ Kerwin. That stayed for what the band have called their final album (thanks to lack of support and the cost of touring, according to Kevin), The Long Goodbye, released in 2023. This was followed in June of this year by A Little Longer Goodbye, with the 10 songs from The Long Goodbye, 2 new live versions of songs from that, and 3 new tracks. Currently they’re still touring, but from what I can tell, only a few dates remain.
Style
Though there’s certainly grunge in their catalog – especially early on – overall they fit more comfortably into hard rock. Naturally, there’s a wide array of influences here too. Blues, alt-rock, even a little glam. There are tracks that’ll definitely remind you of other bands. A few should make you wonder if I’ve snuck in another band until Candlebox goes their own way with the song. I’ll still say that their first album was strongest from top to bottom (and thus will have the most representation), but I’m looking forward to showing you some songs you had no idea existed. I’ll get to the full breakdown when I submit (hopefully today, but looking more likely to be Wednesday), though as a teaser I’ll say I’m planning on 32 tracks. You’ll see what I mean.
