MAD - Artist - Round 4 - #1's have been posted (9 Viewers)

I’m almost though the 31s and while there were many songs I liked (and will comment more later) nothing really jumped out so far.
This was my experience too. Only a couple I grew tired of halfway, just one heart smash (Pretty Reckless, wow), and a lot in between. I'll shout out Built To Spill and Funkadelic though. And that was an unexpected finish to the play list!
Oh yeah, well i didn’t like your songs either, so there!! ;)
Someday, his love will find you...
Will there be a fire in his eyes for me?

Listened to the #30 playlist a couple times. Other than my own song:
  • Favorites already known to me:
    • None in this round
  • Favorites new to me:
    • Ryan Star - Losing Your Memory -- another unfamiliar artist; I must have listened to this song at least 5 times
    • The Pretty Reckless - Light Me Up -- 2 for 2
    • Our Lady Peace - Automatic Flowers -- I know and already like some OLP songs, but this one was new to me
    • Fred Eaglesmith - Cigarette Machine -- another unfamiliar artist; not knocking the lyrics at all, but really liked the music for this song... couldn't help but move to it
I enjoyed this playlist more than #31. When I listened to this playlist today, I was doing other things, and these 4 songs made me stop and go to the screen with the playlist to see which song I was hearing.

@Tau837 - just so you know, I didn't see that live version of your song. I added a live version that I remembered from another show but let me know if you'd rather have the album cut instead.

I just saw this. I intended to link the studio version, but maybe I made a mistake in my list. I think it's fine for a live version to be in the list.

I can swap it, just let me know what you would prefer

True Love Waits is great but I vastly prefer the acoustic live/B side version of the song that was kicking around since The Bends. Seems to have much more emotion and feeling to it. Regardless, glad it made the list.

Fair. I think I stated enough that my time was limited so looking too much into those sorts of variants was impractical, I do have a CD of various bootlegs but that'd need me finding a CD player

We can leave it. I suspect most have already listened to the playlist, and that was a fine live performance.

I have a dvd of the concert for some reason, and I loved how it sounded kicking off the show, that's why I threw it on there.

For about 6months I have been working on my PJ playlist. It is taking me forever because I had the dumb idea to do what @Raging weasel said he was thinking for his Maiden list - my dream concert set list. The "dumb" part was I am doing all live versions so I have been digging through tons of the shows they have on Spotify to find versions of songs I like. Anyway, the version I listed is what I locked in to start the playlist. The switch from "let the games begin" to "let the show begin" always makes me smile.

I chose all studio for this playlist specifically because I didn't feel I had the time to go through all of my live catalog to determine the best version for each song. :-)

Have to say it is cool not to have retained the link to my submission, so that while I have a rough idea as to what I submitted when, I do not recall exactly and it's only the #1 I'm sure about, so the release each 2-3 days is a reveal for me as well
Same here but I know my top 3 😆
I have my list writen down, but I lost my research page. No clue where it went. I have all the previous lists.

Thanks I will keep that in mind. I probably saw the link wrong when it opened to youtube.

Big Room/Deep Big Room
Can I get a rundown on this act?
I'm liking Kong (#30), and see it is by Carta (one of the artists mentioned in (as far as I can see) your only other post in this thread).
TIA
I'll hang up and listen.
I am still a bit confused on what is going on here, but I've also liked the playlist closers.
In my mind, Big Room is a genre/style I’m not aware of (I know the names about 10 genres at most) and not an artist. I’ve been liking it too.

On a smaller playlist like this, I might stick to the ‘normal’ order more often. But for now I’m going back to my shuffling ways. Let me dig into the #30s and see what comes up at the (very) top of an impressive list of choices.

Selected Favorites:
Mind Games - Triumph
Automatic Flowers - Our Lady Peace
Cigarette Machine - Fred Eaglesmith
In Your Mind - Built to Spill
Rubicon - Journey. A sentimental favorite from an album I’m sure we’ll see a few times more.
Lonesome Dreams - Lord Huron
I Don’t Care - Tim Maia
Light Me Up - The Pretty Reckless

Shuffle Adventures:
Shuffle hit Yes’ soft and sweet “Soon” followed by the Eurythmics' rocking “How Long”? They flowed together well, though naturally it would’ve been more humorous if shuffle had reversed their order.

Top 3 known and unknown:

Known
I’m amazed
It doesn’t mean a thing (recognized but not sure if I actually knew this one)

Unknown
Light me up (PR might make every list)
Heaven
I don’t care

I might have just recognized more in 31, but overall it felt stronger to me.

Really looking forward to a bunch of these as we approach their best works.

Top 5 New

  • Heaven - The Walkmen
  • Light Me Up - The Pretty Reckless
  • The Arena - Lindsey Stirling
  • Automatic Flowers - Our Lady of Peace
  • How Long? - The Eurythmics

Top 5 Known

  • The SIdewinder Sleeps Tonight - R.E.M.
  • I'm Amazed - My Morning Jacket
  • Knock 'Em Dead - Motley Crue
  • True Love Waits - Radiohead
  • Words - Bee Gees

I really liked the Whitney Houston and Robyn songs this round as well - they just missed the Top 5. Both were more jazzy than pop.
Overall I liked this list a lot better than the last round.

Isn't it EDM?
from chatGPT:

Big Room is a subgenre of electronic dance music (EDM) that gained prominence in the early 2010s. Characterized by its energetic beats, anthemic melodies, and simple yet powerful drops, Big Room is designed for large festival stages and massive crowds. The music typically features a four-on-the-floor beat, heavy kick drums, minimalistic percussion, and synth-driven melodies that build up to explosive climaxes.

Key Characteristics of Big Room:

Simplistic Structures: The tracks often have straightforward arrangements, making them easily digestible for large audiences.
Anthemic Drops: The emphasis is on creating memorable and impactful drops that energize the crowd.
Festival Appeal: The genre is tailored for live performances at large venues and festivals.

it's a subgenre of progressive/electro house, which is a subgenre of house, which is a subgenre of electronic music as a whole

Some of my old Ringo write-ups aren't going to make a lot of sense when taken out of the context of the post-Beatles Beatles countdown. Here's one:

30. English Garden from Ringo Rama (2003)

Previously ranked #25 - prior write-up below

Ringo Rama
was Ringo’s 13th studio album, released in 2003 and is one of the rare Ringos from which I will have more than one selection. I have to admit, though, that this song would be ranked lower on the list were it not for the fact that I decided to discuss the three “wife” songs together, so it moved up a few slots. Sue me.

Ringo Rama was another production with his longtime producer and co-writer Mark Hudson. Did I talk about this one before? It feels like I talked about this one before. Guess not. All these 21st century Ringos run together. Anyway, in addition to Hudson, Ringo Rama included some frequent collaborators like David Gilmour and Van Dyke Parks, plus some new faces such as Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, and Shawn Colvin. That might be the only time someone has used “Willie Nelson” and “new face” in a sentence together.

This song was composed in part as a tribute to Paul, and Ringo even used a portion of “Let ‘Em In” in the song, asking for Paul’s permission first and giving Paul and Linda a songwriting credit. Also taking a cue from Paul, it contains a charming little hidden track starting at 2:18 called “I Really Love Her” and on which Ringo plays all the instruments. The song contains references to Ringo’s wife Barbara and their dog Buster, and includes Barbara’s voice, which is how it fits into this very special edition of Beatles’s wives. It’s a sweet and Ringo-y song that scores a few bonus points for the Paul connections, too.

30.

The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite- R.E.M.
from Automatic for the People (1992)

I would have this higher. Love this track. At the same time, my REM knowledge is fairly specific in that I just have a collection of their earlier pre-major label works, then Out of Time and Automatic for the People, and that's it. Plenty of albums like Green, Monster and likely others that I have little or no knowledge of - but I doubt if I was going to pick REM that I would end up dropping Sidewinder this low

Automatic For The People is amazing but I am thinking this one might get squeezed out if I made a list, it would be close for sure. New Adventures in Hi-Fi has some great stuff, I am probably on an Island with my love for the very unique Up and appreciate a few gems on Reveal as well.

Yes #30 - Soon
Album - Relayer (1974)

Soon was the single version of the final section of the 22-minute epic The Gates of Delirium, and is my one song selected from this album. TGoD was aptly based on the novel War and Peace (long song for a long book) and obviously went over my ten-minutes-or-less threshold, but Soon works as a standalone pretty well IMO.
Way back when I made a mix tape of Yes I ended it with this song. Fantastic combination of Anderson's vocals and Howe's slide guitar.

Roundup of #30 selections from artists I know well:

Yes -- I would have the entire Gates of Delirium in a Yes top 31 (I realize YM's list has a song-length cap on it). It's the closest they ever got to jazz/rock fusion. In my unscientific observations of 25-ish years of internet posts, Relayer seems to be the favorite Yes album of Phish fans. I first encountered Soon via its appearance on the 9012 Live EP, where it served as Jon Anderson's "solo" segment.

Jeff Tweedy/Wilco -- I know the original but not the cover. The only Golden Smog record I've heard is the first one. This was about what I'd expect from Jeff Tweedy singing The Kinks.

My Morning Jacket -- I'm Amazed would definitely be in my top 31 MMJ. It's one of the best songs on Evil Urges, one of their more uneven albums, and has one of the best hooks Jim James has ever written. My first exposure to the song was their SNL appearance in May 2008, about a month in advance of the release of Evil Urges; they also performed the title track.

P-Funk -- Not really familiar with Bootsy's solo work, but this track definitely fits within that whole universe.

Bee Gees -- Words is a gorgeous ballad and is among my favorite '60s tracks of theirs. Weird to think they almost gave it away.

I'm not usually a big remix guy but I really like the Steven Wilson mix of Relayer. I'm sure there have been other remasters over the decades but my old vinyl copy of the original mix was distinctly muddier than the Wakeman era Yes albums.

Weekly MADs New Release Roundup

Been listening to these remixes tonight and really enjoying them.

CSNY - Live at Fillmore East, 1969 (show from Sept 69)
Oh, hello there.
Happened about a month after Woodstock, so one of their very first gigs together. Woodstock, as they famously said on stage, was their second gig.
Yep. Their first was in Chicago a few days before.

I used to have a bootleg cassette of this with several songs cut off. Will be nice to hear the whole thing.

Not MADs adjacent but a big favorite of @wikkidpissah, there's a "new" Lone Justice album out today, their first together since the mid-80s. They took some 1993 recordings made by Maria McKee and some members of the original band, added some 2024 overdubs by another band member and voila.

I'm sorry to say it's no lost masterpiece but it's a good reason to listen to the band again--their cover of "Teenage Kicks" made my long covers playlist.

Alright, how about a few bonus instrumentals while we wait?? I usually don't dig them too much, but I was surprised how hard it was to cut a couple of these from the first 31, but they are certainly in the next wave of 31 songs....
