Mötley CrüeJWBHelter Skelter

Off Shout at the Devil, this is the third/last cover in the list. The Crüe does a great job with this song. Pretty awesome to see them covering the Beatles, and for a lot of us early-80's teens who only really knew the Beatles radio hits, opened the door to more exploration.

Ryan StarYambagImpossible
The lead single from Ryan’s last full album, Angels + Animals. Ryan on the title of the album: "It stems from a quote I heard that humans are a hybrid between angels and animals. I feel this dichotomy every waking second and finally put it in this brutally honest song."

12. Spellbound
Album: Thunder Seven (1984)
Writers: Rik Emmett, Mike Levine and Gil Moore
Lead vocals: Gil Moore
Chart History: US Mainstream Rock #10; "lower reaches of the top 100" in Canada
Video?: Yes
Lyrical category: Love/lust/breakup

"Spellbound" made a mark on MTV and FM radio in the mid-80s and became a major part of Triumph's stage show from that point on. The opener of Thunder Seven boasts a crunchy, memorable main guitar riff, interrupted by synth blasts that feel '80s but not too '80s, and some tension-building hi-hat hits from Gil Moore. The first three minutes of the song are tailor-made for fist-pumping at the arena, and then the song slows down into a dreamy, mesmerizing passage before leading into Rik Emmett's squalling guitar solo. The final verse repeats the sequence of the first part of the song and then fades out.

The lyrics feature a narrator who is "spellbound" by a lover he knows is not right for him. I've always liked the line "I'm on a one way ride, to where I just don't know," but otherwise I think this theme was done better in a song we will see later.

"Spellbound" was Thunder Seven's second single and I remember it from MTV (in a video where the woman from the song casts a spell that makes a guy's car malfunction, interspersed with shots of the band performing on a soundstage) and the FM stations in Philly. It was prominently featured on every tour between Thunder Seven in 1985 and Edge of Excess in 1993, often as the regular-set closer or first encore, and is included on the Stages live album. It was not played at any of the band's reunion shows, however.

The song had a memorable performance as the regular-set closer of the show I saw in 1986 in Philly -- it was the only song on which Rick Santers traded guitar solos with Emmett, and after the solos, featured an eerie passage not heard in the studio version followed by Moore proclaiming that it was time to turn the show over to the audience. He asked us to hold up lighters and scream, and then a hologram ghoul-type thing projected from the lighting system appeared to proclaim "it just doesn't get any hotter than this." (One Youtube video labels this "The Blinding Light Show Interlude".) Trust me, this was a very impressive use of technology in 1986. If I took live performances more into account, "Spellbound" probably would have ranked higher (Binky: lower).

At #11, what may be the biggest outlier of the countdown; it's the one song in my top 15 that I'm pretty sure would not be anywhere near this high in a consensus ranking of die-hard Triumph fans.

#12: JOURNEY - ANY WAY YOU WANT IT

Yeah, I still have some well known heavy hitters still left on my countdown. I really liked the VHS live version that I stumbled on just now as well, so I popped that in there too. Bass stands out on the headphones here, and I also like the buildup up low rumble on the keys at the start of the song. One of the few songs that have caught on with my daughter and I caught her belting this out a couple weeks ago. Man, it was hard narrowing down my top 15.

Next: Alright, @zamboni - it's time to officially dust off that wall mounted synth

#12: LORD HURON - HURRICANE (JOHNNIE'S THEME)

I love this song so damn much. It is such an infectious little tune. I seem to listen to the album a bit at work, and have gotten caught a few times bouncing and singing to this one, mostly this part....

What is life? Only visions
When I die, I'm coming right on back for you
Who am I? An illusion
Would I lie? I'm coming right on back for you

Oh little darlin' don't you look charming
Here in the eye of a hurricane
Real or imagined - what does it matter?

Come inside, can I get you to stay?

Next we get back to some Lonesome Dreams

Some of his songs have a way of doing that. I have similar reactions to I Lied that just got posted as well.

#12 - Robyn - Dancehall Queen

Producer - Klas Åhlund and Diplo
Writer - Klas Åhlund
Chart Positions - #56 Sweden
Album - Body Talk Part 1
Year - 2010

Collaborator History - Robyn worked wth Diplo on two tracks on her Body Talk series. He also remixed one track on the Honey LP. They are fairly unnoteworthy. Diplo has a long production with other artists, mainly one or two tracks an album. Madonna, MIA, Maroon 5, The Weeknd, Beyonce, Chris Brown etc

Key Lyric - Now what, your jaw has dropped
Until the music stop, you know
I still run this thing like a dancehall queen
I really don't want no hassle

Notes - Now for something completely different. This piece is a dancehall song, with influences of reggae. Critics did not like it. While praising the albums overall, they seemed to enjoy sinking the boot into this one. Any compliment was followed by a backhanded slap.

We [Robyn, Diplo and Klas Åhlund] were talking about Ace of Base and we were just having fun with that kind of genre music. And the idea of making this song came out of that discussion. It was fun. We really connected on something where music that you might put in one box becomes something else, depending on how you look at it." In an interview with music magazine Pitchfork, she spoke of the song's musical style, stating;

In my world, there are people who have already pushed those boundaries [of musical style] forward enough for me to feel comfortable doing a song like 'Dancehall Queen', so it's not a big deal to me. It's not about making black music as much as it's about making music that relates to real things that I grew up with. Back then, when Dr. Alban came to Sweden from Africa and started making reggae music with Denniz Pop—who did Ace of Base—it was too weird to be offensive. It's the same thing with Mad Decent and Diplo now.

Next up - An interesting collaborator on the next track. The second last collaboration that doesn’t feature on a Robyn album.

12. Never Without You from Ringo Rama (2003)

Previously ranked #13 - prior write-up below

This is a legitimately beautifully written song in tribute to Ringo’s (at one time) best friend George, from Ringo’s first album after George’s death. I know, again, Ringo…voice…whatever. But in addition to a beautiful melody, and a riff of “What Is Life” right at the beginning of the bridge, the song features George’s other one-time BFF Eric Clapton on some excellent slide guitar, and lyrics that work in references to many of George’s songs. Crap, I’m all teary again.

Reminder: songs by one or more Beatles in tribute or in kindness to another Beatle get 52 squillion extra points from me. This is also not the last time this maxim will arise.

We were young, it was fun
And we couldn't lose
Times were right, overnight
We were headline news
Crazy days and reckless nights
Limousines and bright spotlights
We were brothers through it all

And your songs will play on without you
And this world won't forget about you
Every part of you was in your song
Now we will carry on
Never without you (Without you, without you)
Within you, without you (Within you, without you)
Here comes the sun is about you

Here today, not alone
With my memories
Life is strange how things change
It's reality
You played a beautiful melody
That keeps on haunting me
I can always feel you by my side

And your songs will play on without you
And this world won't forget about you
Every part of you was in your song
Now we will carry on
Never without you (Without you, without you)
Within you, without you (Within you, without you)
Here comes the sun is about you

I know all things must pass
And only love will last
I'll always love the memory of you and me
Take it away, Eric

And your songs will play on without you
And this world won't forget about you
Every part of you was in your song
Now we will carry on
Never without you (Never without you)
Within you without you (Within you without you)

We're never without you
We're never without you
Within you, without you
I think love is about you

Candlebox #12
Song: Riptide
Album: Wolves (2021)

(Youtube version) Candlebox - Riptide
(Live Version) Candlebox - Riptide - Mercury Ballroom - Louisville - Kentucky

And I don't really wanna live
Chasing something I can't catch hold of
Can't catch hold of
I, I was caught in a wave
And I, I thought nothing would change

Really, the acoustic version of Riptide was only released as a single. But since the original version was on Wolves, that’s where I’m placing this one too. Both versions were released in 2021, for those interested in such things.

This song (/album) is a bit packed with guest stars. On the album version, that’s David Hitchcock on piano, Marta Honer on violin, and Ro Rowan on cello. It all comes together to a song I’ve liked in various forms.

Kevin Martin’s talked about this song being about being buried under a load of stuff that life throws at you, and finding a way to claw your way out. About, to quote the live version I linked, “trying to stay above water”. Pun with the title very much intentional. Again, there's a timing aspect to this theme on the album, given that it was looking to come out in 2020 but, you know, things happened. With that, there's a hopeful side of "Riptide" too, of finding someone to help you through.

Next on the countdown, we’re almost to the top 10, but not quite. Guess you’ll have to continue to anticipate it.

Eddie VedderTau837Just Breathe

"Just Breathe" is a song from Pearl Jam's 2009 album "Backspacer." It peaked at #6 on Billboard's Alternative Airplay chart and spent 13 weeks at #1 on Billboard's Adult Alternative Airplay chart. In February 2021, for the latter chart's 25th anniversary, Billboard ranked the song #14 on its list of the 100 most successful songs in the chart's history. On January 22, 2014, "Just Breathe" was certified platinum in digital sales, making it Pearl Jam's first platinum-certified song.

Written by Eddie, the song is about the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing the present moment. Eddie's lyrics reflect a meditative, almost spiritual approach to relationships, as well as a recognition of how precious life can be in the face of inevitable mortality. A key theme of the song is love and the bond between people, with a sense of gratitude for relationships. I really like these lyrics:

I wonder everyday
As I look upon your face
Everything you gave
And nothing you would take
Nothing you would take,..
Everything you gave

Did I say that I need you?
Oh, Did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn't now I'm a fool you see,..
No one knows this more than me
I come clean

Nothing you would take,..
Everything you gave
Hold me till I die,..
Meet you on the other side

Musically, the song features a gentle, acoustic-driven arrangement that complements the emotional weight of the lyrics. The song's simplicity allows Eddie's voice to take center stage, creating an intimate, personal atmosphere. The track is built around a soft, finger-picked acoustic guitar, with subtle instrumental layering that adds texture without overwhelming the song's tender mood. A string section (arranged by the band's longtime collaborator, the late David Campbell) adds depth and warmth to the arrangement, enhancing the emotional intensity of the song. Eddie's vocal delivery is calm yet powerful, with his trademark gravelly baritone delivering the song’s heartfelt message with vulnerability and sincerity.

In summary, "Just Breathe" is a song that speaks to the heart. Its gentle, reflective nature, paired with Eddie's soul-stirring vocals and the band's subtle, acoustic instrumentation, makes it a timeless anthem about the beauty of living in the present moment and cherishing the relationships that define our lives.

12. When You Believe (duet w/Mariah Carey) (My Love is Your Love, 1998)

When I put my list together, I thought I kept it in strict chronological order, but I must have rushed through and not paid attention to the dates. Never mind, though, as we get a monumental vocal collaboration to listen to now.

Whitney's first studio album in eight years that wasn't connected to a movie, My Love is Your Love, demonstrated that she hadn't lost a step, and with Kenneth 'Babyface' Edmonds (fun fact for you: Edmonds was given the moniker 'Babyface' by M-AD star Bootsy Collins) co-producing with her, she struck quadruple platinum with a blend of hip-hop, pop, gospel and dance tunes. The album was nominated for seven Grammys, and Whitney won one for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.

The first single released from this album was the studio version of the song When You Believe, from the animated film Prince of Egypt. Whitney had been made aware of the song when co-producer Babyface was asked to create a version of the song for the movie's end credits. He recognized the potential in the song for it to have commercial success, in the right hands. With Whitney as one half of the duet, another voice that could keep up was needed, and as luck would have it, one was already interested.

Mariah Carey had been approached separately by the movie's studio co-owner Jeffery Katzenberg about recording the song for the movie's soundtrack. Like two trains heading toward each other on the same track, the meeting was inevitable.

At the time of their meeting, a narrative of a fierce rivalry between the two was being circulated, so that many people outside of Whitney and Mariah's inner circles were expecting drama and fireworks. Carey denied the tension in interviews, going so far as to say she hadn't even talked to Whitney before they went into the studio to record this song, and Whitney told Ebony magazine:

I enjoyed working with her very much. Mariah and I got along very great. We had never talked and never sang together before. We just had a chance for camaraderie, singer-to-singer, artist-to-artist, that kind of thing. We just laughed and talked and laughed and talked and sang in between that ... It's good to know that two ladies of soul can still be friends. We talked about doing other things together, enterprise-wise, which is cool, because she's got a good, vivid mind, that girl. She's a smart lady. I really like Mariah.

The single was a smash all over Europe and reached #15 on Billboard's Hot 100 and #3 on their US Adult Contemporary chart. Additionally, it won an Oscar for Best song as well as a Critic's Choice Award for Best song.

Coming into this list, I had an overall negative opinion of Mariah, based mainly on hearsay about her 'diva' behavior. After learning a little more about her for this countdown, I can see how she and Whitney were more complementary pieces of each other and instead of trying to decide which one had the better of the things they had in common, they celebrated each other's talents as peers. This sentiment, to me, was in full-on display when they performed the song at the Oscars. There was no attempt to one-up the other and the both poured their talent and mutual support into the song and not in any attempt to make either of them look better than the other.

Tim MaiaDon QuixoteOver Again
“Over Again” is another one from his self-titled 1973 album, which I mentioned earlier I think has more songs in my list than any other album of his. In reading about Tim Maia, this song gets mentioned a lot as maybe his best English-language song. I do have some more still on my list though. Good example of the soul-samba style and how it suited him. Definitely one of his best chorus sections:

I'm gonna try, try, try, oh try
Try it over and over and over
Over again

Song: Outtasite (Outta Mind)
Artist: Wilco
Album: Being There
Year: 1996

I know we don't talk much but you're but you're such a good talker,
Well I know we should take a walk but y'er such a fast walker, oh-whoa,
well alright
I know where I'll be tonight, alright
Outta mind outta site
Well O.K., I know you don't love me but you'll still be thinking of me,

The closest Wilco has come to a hit single. It was released as a single, and received moderate airplay on some college rock radio stations and the video got some play on MTV.

Just going to chime and and say how much I love this song. Just a stunningly beautiful tune and I am glad to see it on your list.
Now going to listen to it about 10 times.

Bittersweet Me- R.E.M.
from New Adventures in HI-FI (1996)

The second single from New Adventures was “Bittersweet Me,” It was their last album with Bill Berry, and it finds the band's brilliantly efficient formula at work one last time, before they would be forced to adapt to a major lineup change. The song, like much of the others from the album, was written during soundcheck on the Monster tour. This song specifically was recorded during the soundcheck of their Memphis show. It is also a song that the band has never played live (which I found to be crazy) Its a song that I had around 20ish with my first list but I just kept moving it up with every listening. There are a smattering of good songs after NAIHF... but this is the last album from REM that I enjoyed in its entirety.

Really enjoyed the 12s and 13s the first time through. I plan to listen again before listing the likes, there were many.

This week’s Deep Dive is with the Counting Crows 🐦‍⬛ 🐦‍⬛ I’m enjoying a lot of their stuff more than I thought I might after the first few albums.

An underrated gem (cover)

I’ll admit that I wasn’t a huge fan of this song at first, but it’s definitely grown on me and the spot in my rankings shows that.

There’s a lot going on in this one, but I enjoy the complexity and the awesome harmonies. Per Steve Howe: "It has everything: riffs, themes, bridges and an unusual middle eight, big Stravinsky-like orchestral stabs".

I've always loved how Bruford doubles up on the backbeat every fourth measure. It's such a little thing but it makes the song more interesting rhythmically.

The Clashkupcho1Julie's Been Working for the Drug Squad
Hey, one from 1978's Give 'Em Enough Rope! Julie's Been Working for the Drug Squad is, per boblethaby
about Operation Julie (named after Police Sergeant Julie Taylor) a drugs bust of biblical proportions that was carried out not in Miami, not in Amsterdam, not in Thailand, not even in London, but in a tiny village in the middle of Wales!!

I had no idea!
This was an operation involving 28 under cover officers from across the country posing as hippies to infiltrate the gang that included the founder members, David Solomon, a psychedelic revolutionary author, and Richard Kemp, a chemist, who had first successfully synthesized LSD in 1969.

This was a huge organisation, with networks across the globe and hundreds of thousands of pounds stashed in Swiss bank accounts. Police raided 87 homes across England and Wales with over 120 arrests and at a stroke 90% (£6.5 million street value) of the LSD market had been wiped out, causing a price rise from £1 to £5 per tab in 1977.

And then there came the night of the greatest ever raid
They arrested every drug that had ever been made
They took eighty-two laws
Through eighty-two doors
And they didn't halt the pull
Till the cells were all full
'Cause Julie's been working for the Drug Squad
Julie's been working for the Drug Squad

Glad to see Give 'Em Enough Rope finally make an appearance. It was my first Clash album.

Sandy Pearlman's production gets a lot of undeserved criticism--the sound is definitely a bit slicker than their debut record but it rocks in all the right places.

"Julie's Been Working for the Drug Squad" is the one song from the album that sounds like it could have come off of London Calling.

Marr #12 / Smiths #4 - The Smiths - "Girl Afraid" (1984)

I complain a lot about rankings because too many lists are just click-baity trash. Rolling Stone's 2023 list of the 250 Greatest Guitarists is a particularly bad (as in bad) example. Johnny comes in at #56 which puts him behind Eddie Hazel (#31) and Ed O'Brien/Jonny Greenwood (#43) from the current countdown. Marr is not your typical rock 'n roll guitar slinger because his playing owes very little to the electric blues tradition. He's entirely self taught, learning his craft from playing along with glam and R&B records and trying to capture all the parts with just his guitar. His style is distinctive but unassuming because he almost always stays within the structure of the song rather than stepping out with a flashy lick. Many of his solos are just repeated four-bar sequences that change things up a little but never enough to mess with the groove.

"Girl Afraid" is a great example of Johnny's playing. I'm not a guitar player but supposedly the fast main riff is devilishly hard to play. He changes things up a little when Morrissey comes in with the verse and adds some overdubbed chords for emphasis. The song races by with only two verses and no chorus--one each from the perspective of a "girl afraid" and a "boy afraid" ending on a hanging minor chord from Marr.

I shared a to play at my funeral play list with my wife- 7 or 8 songs or so. This was a no brainer

Oh, I'm a lucky man
To count on both hands
The one I love
Some folks just have one
Yeah, others they got none
Stay with me
Let's just breathe

Usually starts getting salty somewhere during that stretch

Also, not gonna Hipple, but I lost my battle with work over the last month and this fell by the wayside. Gave up catching up and will recalibrate ~Dec 30.

That said, those that have dug the OLP rockers or alternative music in general, be sure to check out the last handful of contributions, if you haven't yet. The most recent one, Hello Oskar, is my favorite among their lesser / not known tracks, but pick anything starting with Is It Safe at #20 and I'll never skip them.

I mention this now because now we're about to get into the hits. Not all of them, but more of them. As I've listening to them over the last 2 months, I find myself coming back to the lesser knowns. Such a deep catalog...

Hipple on, dude, if you wanna. I doubt anyone will harsh your mellow.

The #12s , thanks to shuffle, actually started with my selection for the first time this round. Obviously I’m not going to spotlight that one more than I already have, though. Instead here’s what caught my attention the most:

Selected (and shuffled) Favorites
Hurricane (Johnnie’s theme) - Lord Huron
Nothing Left to Lose - The Pretty Reckless
Song for Leigh - The Walkmen
Anyway You Want It - Journey
Dancehall Queen - Robyn
Never Without You - Ringo Starr
Who’s That Girl? - Eurhythmics (/Annie Lennox)
I Saw Three Ships - Lindsay Stirling
Spellbound - Triumph
Sultan - SCNDL & Strike Nine (via Big Room)

Shuffle Adventures
I had a couple close choices for this category. By a slim margin, I’ll pick Our Lady Peace’s “Hello Oskar” meshing very well with “Outtasite (Outta Mind)” from Wilco (and Jeff Tweedy)

Hopefully come ~Dec 30. Been one of those stretches that you get beaten up so badly, you don't want to absorb anything new- even sounds. Last full day in the office is Thurs, few half days after, then I'm off until Mon 1/6. Taking care of myself on the half days, then devoting the next ~10 days to family, then I'll start recalibrating. I'm sure I'll sprinkle in commentary here and there when I see something familiar though.

Was away most of last week and I'm a bit behind on writeups. This tune speaks for itself, but I can't unsee/unhear this scene whenever the song comes on:

I shared a to play at my funeral play list with my wife- 7 or 8 songs or so. This was a no brainer

Oh, I'm a lucky man
To count on both hands
The one I love
Some folks just have one
Yeah, others they got none
Stay with me
Let's just breathe

Usually starts getting salty somewhere during that stretch
❤️ agreed.

This will go right behind Free / into the mystic on my funeral playlist. The only conversation I’ve had with my wife about my funeral was to play this Zach brown version.
