MAD - Artist - Round 4 - #1's have been posted (2 Viewers)

Some Christmas songs from my MAD artists or connected with my MAD artists…

Nina Simone - Children Go Where I Send You

Jorge Ben - Natal Brasileiro

Tim Maia - A Festa Do Santa Reis (my Tim Maia #14 — as noted there, about a celebration of the ephinany)

The Impressions - Silent Night (From Cotillon’s 1976 Funky Christmas album. After Mayfield left. Former Temptation Nate Evans in the lead)

Jan Bradley - Christmas Time (written by Curtis Mayfield and arranged by Johnny Pate, who turned 101 earlier this month)

Listening to some theme playlist possibilities this morning, and I am going to switch (hey - @krista4 ). I mentioned I was having some trouble trying to get the “TV Show Theme song” theme in a way to make it fresh and new.

I’m going to switch over to Afrobeat as my theme. I will primarily draw from musicians from Nigeria and the high-life of Ghana, but I will take a broad definition of Afrobeat to also include some Zamrock, Cameroon, and Kenya, where fusion of traditional African music with American funk/rock/jazz. I won’t include Niger/Tuareg music, as I view that as its own thing with some middle eastern fusion. I may list some artists more than once, but will try to spread out over a good mix of artists, as thought would be good to highlight some artists that I would never get to a 31 on a separate artist MAD list.

Robyn - Last Christmas

Röyksopp - Le Cantique Noel

The Stranglers, Chvrches, The Sweet and Tears for Fears do not do Christmas

I found a Christmas song with a Triumph connection:

The Philly Specials ft. Jon Bon Jovi -- Run Rudolph Run https://open.spotify.com/track/6h3ss6XbugN9NoaJsBTy9n?si=ab8be365421e423c

The Philly Specials are current or former Eagles (the football team) Jason Kelce, Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata. The guitar solo is performed by Bon Jovi's guitarist Phil X, who was Rik Emmett's replacement for Triumph's Edge of Excess album and tour in 1992-93.

As a bonus:

The Philly Specials ft. Mt. Joy -- Santa Drives an Astrovan https://open.spotify.com/track/1rb7InAYkUFd3lAOgqWELK?si=c86ebdca0bec4324

One more from Fred Eaglesmith, but first a word of caution - dreck. It's a 24 minute show made for CMT; it's a short story short a story; you'll regret watching it.

So for your Christmas family gathering, I highly recommend slipping this into the TV stream, and then stepping back to admire your Rick Roll on roids.

The Gift

I work with several people from Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon and a few other African countries, and right now all I have in common to talk to them about is soccer, so this will be a welcome list.

The only Built To Spill song that is at all Christmas related (and it's very tangential, only because the first word is "Christmas") was the one set to be posted today---at least I got that timed correctly. So it will play on Thursday instead.

Modest Mouse and Destroyer have zero Christmas related songs that I can find, other than one that is not worth posting.

David Berman has a gorgeous Christmas-adjacent song that actually was in my top 4, so I'll post that one again:

Snow Is Falling In Manhattan - Purple Mountains

I appreciate and benefit from all of your collective knowledge, humor, wit, silliness, compassion, advice, and several other nouns----great community here.

Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to you all. ☮️ ♥️

I don't believe any of my artists recorded anything involving Christmas/ the holidays. Still, in an effort to stray away from posting a link to Christmas in the Stars, I'll note that I found a playlist put together by Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers that's very much in the spirit of things.

Good to see you in here, simey!!
When I saw that you were doing Journey, I almost sent you a PM to ask you if you knew "Feeling That Way/Anytime" were companion songs. I know I'm older than you, and I thought there was a chance that they weren't played together, if played at all, during your listening years. Anyway, I see that you didn't know, but it's great that you included them both in your top 31. As far as companion songs go, "Feeling That Way/Anytime" is in my top 10 favorite of all time. Love it.

Too funny. I think the end result was funnier and more fitting anyway. I have no recollection of hearing Feeling That Way in general, but I also mostly avoided the radio after I starting getting tapes and cds. We are this far into the playlists and dozens of listens from me, and I still don't fully get it or hear it. I also think of segue songs as flowing together as in the music bleeds together more, like the Lord Huron songs I've highlighted or the 1-2 punch that I prefer from Journey. We haven't gotten to the 2nd part of that one yet, but I am guessing most of you more knowledgeable Journey listeners probably already know what I am getting at...

I know I linked the following before. It's one of my favorite Youtube finds from my research, and I was watching again as a set up to my #5. (Dammit, I should have asked Santa for a shirt like Rolie is rockin' !!). I will say that I laughed that I saw Anytime on the setlist by itself and that now I have listened enough I missed the Feeling That Way set up. Homemade Love/Anytime sounded weird.

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukah to all!

Of my other MAD artists, The Jam and Fanny have no Christmas material I know of, but Chicago is the opposite. They have at least three albums of Christmas songs. I have not listened to all of them in full, but the best track I have come across is their version of Winter Wonderland from their 2003 album Chicago Christmas: What's It Going to Be, Santa? The horn arrangement and Robert Lamm's vocal both hearken back to their '70s material.

10. The Christmas Dance from I Wanna Be Santa Claus (1999)

Previously ranked #15 - prior write-up below

Work with me here – Ringo’s Christmas album is a ####### hoot. It received well-deserved rave reviews upon release, as it’s Ringo is doing what he does best – OK, what he does third-best after (1) acting as a ####### metronome, and (2) backwards-### fills – having fun, in this case by putting out an album meant to tell you that Christmas is always here, not just one day a year. Checking a calendar, I see it’s mid-September, and Ringo has brought Christmas cheer to my house.

I decided not to pummel you guys with anything more than one song, but there are several on here I enjoy. Chief among those I didn’t select is “Christmas Time (Is Here Again)”, a reworking of the Beatles song put out in 1967 as part of their fan-club annual holiday release. It was wacky and unnerving then, and it’s every bit as wacky but slightly less unnerving on this version. A little more unnerving but interesting and compelling is the new composition, “Pax Um Biscum” (Peace Be With You).

Combined with some fun versions of such songs as Rudolph and Winter Wonderland, this toe-tapping Ringo-original song combines with the rest of the album to make for a record you could easily work into your ham dinners and family arguments. It’s a Christmas miracle!
The Spotify algorithm just gave me "Come On Christmas, Christmas Come On" from this album. It's surprisingly hard rocking for a Christmas song. I'm guessing it didn't make your cut because of the sax solo.

Not a MAD artist but I always liked Billy Squier's Christmas song.
A favorite of mine, but it needs the video for the real ‘80s/MTV nostalgia:

Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to all of you and your families.

I'm sorry to say that P-Funk didn't specialize in Holiday tunes. I'd pay good money for a Bootsy Collins cover of "White Christmas"
One of their songs begins with a tease of “Jesus Loves Me,” so that’s probably the closest they got.
I don't know if we're thinking of the same song, but one of Bootsy's records opens with what I would consider a riff on that song. But P-Funk's choruses were certainly modeled on gospel. But I wouldn't chance carrying any of the lyrics into a chapel

Finally listened to the #7 playlist. Other than my own song:
  • Favorites already known to me:
    • Journey - Don't Stop Believin'
    • Annie Lennox - Walking on Broken Glass
    • R.E.M. - Radio Free Europe -- top 5 R.E.M. song for me
    • Radiohead - Creep -- top 5 RH song for me
  • Favorites new to me:
    • Wilco - You and I
    • Lindsey Stirling - Snow Waltz
    • Our Lady Peace - Is Anybody Home?
    • The Airborne Toxic Event - Changing
    • My Morning Jacket - Evelyn is not Real
    • Candlebox - It's Alright -- really like these lyrics
    • Fred Eaglesmith - Trucker Speed
Another great playlist, maybe the best yet for me.

On this day of Christmas, the #6s gave to me… lots of wonderful songs. Far more than 6. Or even twice that. Let me pick out a “few”

Selected (and Shuffled) Favorites
Annihilation - Justin Prime (/Big Room)
Drive - REM
Feeling That Way/Anytime - Journey. Spotify tried to split these with ads, but I just listened to “Feeling That Way” twice instead.
Elderly Woman Behind the Counter… - Pearl Jam (/Eddie Vedder)
A World Of Fantasy - Triumph
Time To Run - Lord Huron
With Every Heartbeat - Robyn
You Light Up My Life - Whitney Houston
Hell And Back - The Airborne Toxic Event
Ice Storm - Lindsay Stirling

Shuffle Adventures:
I’m tempted to go with Wilco’s “Monday” followed by “Night Fever” from Bee Gees just for the alternative title combination. Though, honestly, the songs also work together in a (personally) surprising way.
