MAD - Artist - Round 4 - #1's have been posted (8 Viewers)

Short writeup on The Walkmen.

The Walkmen are an American indie rock band considered to be part of the early 2000s post-punk revival in New York City. They were initially active from 2000-2013 and released 7 studio albums during this span. Their sound is inspired by a wide variety of artists from Elvis Pressley and Buddy Holly to Bob Dylan and The Cure. Their sound has been described as having an innovative approach to atmosphere and instrumentation including jangly guitars, some of the best drumming this century, and lead singer Hamilton Leithauser's unique "Dylanesque" vocal stylings. The band consists of:

Hamilton Leithauser: Vocals
Paul Maroon: Guitar, Keyboard
Walter Martin: bass, organ
Peter Matthew Bauer: organ, bass
Matt Barrick: drums

I was introduced to this band by my brother-in-law who took me completely blind to a concert of theirs in San Francisco and I was blown away pretty much immediately. I feel like they stand apart from other indie bands from the time. I had never and still haven't seen a drumming performance like Matt Barrick's at this show.

For this list of 31 songs, I will be doing what I did for the Tea Party. The list is ranked except for the first two "introductory" songs that I moved up to give a good first impression of the band for those new to them. These are actually my number 6 and 3 ranked songs.

The entire playlist is barely over 2 hours. That should free up some time for someone to pick some epic post-rock band.

I’ve sometimes mentioned here an online trivia site that I’m part of. They had a trivia theme of “Non-Political DC Celebrities” with The Walkmen as the answer to one of the questions today. Got it right thanks to a pretty big hint in the question. “Other alumni of St. Albans include members of what indie rock band? They attended in the mid-90s, making them just old enough to have used the portable electronic devices for which they are named. Although the members all went to high school in D.C., they formed as a band in New York City, which is more than a hundred miles off from where they first met.”

I’ve actually heard that if someone is under the influence of a recreational foreign substance that it sounds like the various band members are performing in different locations inside their brain, and that they sometimes move around to other locations while they play. It’s pretty awesome. Or so I’ve heard.
We'll have to get @KarmaPolice to confirm.

My list is pretty much done - will do an introductory paragraph sometime this week.

I’ll briefly start off with most of my Jeff Tweedy list will be with Wilco. Thats how initially I came to him, and that’s what I listen to the most. I first discovered them when my roommate in a Jersey City apartment who was a singer in a (non successful) band that played new material out and very few covers. He came home from some music convention, in 1993 or 1994 with a bunch of CD samplers of new artists. There was a Wilco song on it that captivated me. It was a song I couldn’t find again for so long - I’ll talk about that more when we get there on the countdown - and I ordered Being There from the internet immediately. I was so hooked after the first two songs and everything else was gravy.

I then went back to A.M. as well and bought anything they put out. For a loooonggg time I always referred to them as “my favorite new band”. In like 2008, I figured they weren’t that new anymore and they were just one of my favorite bands. I’m fairly sure I haven’t listened to any band more than them from 1995 to present day.

It would have been easier to just do a Wilco list, but I wanted to paint a full picture and there were a few Uncle Tupelo and solo songs I wanted included. The downside is, less Wilco.
My introduction to Wilco was very similar—minus the roommate in a band.

And they are also possibly my favorite artist.
My first year out of college, I was working at a newspaper, and at the end of the year they were auctioning off the various promo items that had been sent to the newsroom throughout the year. I got a small stack of CDs, one of which was Uncle Tupelo’s Anodyne.

I loved it immediately and a few months later went to see UT in Asbury Park on what turned out to be their final tour.

I read that Tweedy formed a new band called Wilco and got AM when it came out. And went from there.

I saw them open for Kings of Leon at the SF Civic (...checks notes...) fifteen years ago.

The one I mentioned was at a small venue on Divisadero. I then saw them again at the Fillmore. Both times they were the headline act.

Charlie Steiner's M-AD Whitney Houston Primer

Preface: Just about everything I will write about 'The Voice' in this thread is new to me and as such, I welcome anyone else's knowledge and memories not only about Whitney but about the songs as well. I hold all information with an open hand.

I find it impossible to begin talking about Whitney Houston without mentioning her mother first. Cissy Houston has had a remarkable singing career in her own right; as a backing/studio vocalist, she worked with Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Lou Rawls, The Drifters, Dusty Springfield, Van Morrison (Brown Eyed Girl, specifically), Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix (specifically the song Burning of the Midnight Lamp), and was part of Elvis Presley's accompaniment when he performed live in Las Vegas from July-August 1969, at which time she switched to a career recording instead of touring in order to raise her young family. As a studio artist, she won two Grammys in the Traditional Soul Gospel category. Additionally, she is related to Dionne Warwick and Leontyne Price. With such a wealth of talent running through her veins, I would say that her progeny's accomplished career was inevitable.

Like so many people blessed with singing talent, Whitney began singing as a child in her church and then into high school, though her first brush with fame was as a teen model. It didn't take long for her voice to draw more attention than her face, and she began her music career with her first album in 1985. Though it took almost a year of climbing the charts, it reached #1 and stayed at the top for 14 weeks. More top-selling albums, Grammys and gold records would follow as she not only crossed over from R&B to pop music, she also found mainstream pop culture success on film, starring in multiple successful movies: The Bodyguard, Waiting to Exhale, The Preacher's Wife and Cinderella. She continued recording and releasing successful albums all the way until the end of her too-short life, of which I have no further comment at this time. Despite the relatively small catalog of music she left behind, it is my humble opinion that she took with her a voice that will never be replaced or equaled in power, purity of tone and ability to make our hearts melt with such ease.

The 31 songs of this countdown will appear chronologically, starting with her very first appearance on vinyl. The picks are mostly chalk, though I believe I have added a couple of lesser known songs as well. I will provide mostly liner notes-type of information, which I've so far found to be an eye-opening glimpse into the making of a pop music sensation. I will use discretion when it comes to the less fortunate moments of her personal life and mention them mainly for context only, because I get so emotional about what happened to her that I would otherwise derail myself with angry ranting.
The timing on this makes me sad. Was reading your stuff about Cissy Houston earlier, and just saw the news that she passed away…

In honor of Cissy's passing, here she is at age 54 on Letterman.

Possibly the youngest artist on this list, Lindsey isn’t 40 yet.
the middle child of three daughters of Stephen and Diane Stirling. Stirling describes her childhood as being raised in a modest household and stated "I would not trade my humble childhood years for anything else." Due to her family's financial limitations, her parents could only afford to find a violin teacher who would give her half lessons. Although they were told by instructors that "a child isn't going to learn how to play in 15 minutes a week", her parents persisted, and at the age of five, she began taking violin lessons.

While in high school, she joined four friends in a rock band called Stomp on Melvin. As part of her experience with the group, Stirling wrote a solo violin rock song, and her performance helped her to win the state title of Arizona's junior Miss and claim the Spirit Award in the American Junior Miss competition.

At 25, she was a quarter finalist on America’s got talent. Where judge Piers Morgan buzzed and told her: "You're not untalented, but you're not good enough, I don't think, to get away with flying through the air and trying to play the violin at the same time."
Sharon Osborne commented: "You need to be in a group. ... What you're doing is not enough to fill a theater in Vegas." 😜

Yeah, she’s “good enough” to fill a stadium. Although her collaborations are fantastic.

Any Mermaid Avenue?

Related: I'm going to see Billy Bragg tonight. Have only seen him once before, and he had laryngitis that night, so I'm hoping for a better show.

Billy will make another appearance in this countdown

Billy was 🔥 last night. His set was nearly 2-1/2 hours, and vocal was outstanding. Super-engaged with the crowd as well. Can't recommend highly enough to see him. Well, if you're a libertarian, the show might not be for you.

Two Mermaid Avenue songs showed up: "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key" and "All You Fascists." (I assume I can mention those since they weren't Tweedy/Wilco-led ones, but let me know if I should delete.)

Opening act was Steven Page, whom I didn't know by name. Kind of embarrassed when I learned he was the lead singer, guitarist, songwriter, etc. for Barenaked Ladies for 20 years. WOW, what a voice that guy has. Stunning. And as it turns out, a really great songwriter. I'd always written off that band because of the dreadful "One Week" song. Going to have to dive in now. Maybe one of our Canadians could choose them for Round 4 here. :)

Spoilers! OK, OK, I wasn't doing that one anyway. Today there is a category of "Albums by Their Pitchfork Reviews." It was shockingly easy, but there was one I didn't know, so I'm not going to submit my answers. There's always someone who has them all right.

I only considered the songs Jeff sang lead.

My friend knows I love Wilco and am not a fan of Billy's voice, so he burned me a "Billy-free" CD of tracks from the Mermaid Ave. records.

If I knew 11/12 of that one, I would have submitted; should get you into top 5% or maybe top 1%. I once won of the one-days with 11/12.

I was falling a bit short on initial read, but may need more time to think.

They’ve been on my list of possibilities for a while. Maybe for round 20?

I've always loved his voice. The band is not nearly the same without him. They have an excellent Christmas album too, Barenaked For the Holidays.
I didn't really think about doing a MAd list for them but it would be an option for me, possibly.

Did he sing Call and Answer or What a Good Boy? Two of my favorites and really showcase his singing chops.

Might be my, and my wife’s favorite Christmas song ever.

I guess that means until the lists close. Be afraid.

Well, you convinced me to submit it, but I only got 9/12 due to my usual practice of not reading the question closely enough and getting it wrong as a result. For instance, on Question 1 putting the artist name instead of the album name.

What is this trivia site y'all speak of?
LearnedLeague. Has a trivia league drawing from general broad set of categories, but also some “offseason” trivia on specific topics. (I drafted a Nina Simone one partially using my knowledge I learned for my MAD list that will go live later this month.)

Can send you a PM if interested in some more info.

If there are any Strand of Oaks fans from MAD#3, here's an excellent professional, multi-cam video of a show from last month in Brussels (linked inline to avoid the German text block).

It was the final night of a short European tour playing with a band of Europeans Tim put together presumably to cut down on travel expenses. I thought the set was a little slow to get going but kicked into another gear about the half hour mark. He must be big in Belgium because the venue was significantly bigger than anyplace he ever played around here.

He talked to the crowd near the end and said he was taking an extended break from music so he can "get his head straight again". Hope everything is alright.

Song:
Love is Everywhere (Beware)
Performed by: Wilco
Album: Ode To Joy
Year: 2019

Ode to Joy
is the eleventh studio album by Wilco, released on October 4, 2019. "Love Is Everywhere (Beware)" was the lead single released prior to the album, and the song eventually made its way onto a national television commercial (for what product? damn, if I remember)

Song:
Ted Lasso Theme Song
Performed by: Jeff Tweedy
Album: Ted Lasso: Season 2 (Apple TV+ Original Series Soundtrack)
Year: 2021

I don't remember this song from the show, let alone it being the theme song, but usurpingly it showed up in my Spotify algorithms. The song is as cool and as sweet as the show.

Song:
Summer Noon
Performed by: Tweedy
Album: Sukierae
Year: 2014

Sukierae is the debut album by Tweedy, a side project formed by Jeff Tweedy and his son Spencer. It is a double album featuring 20 new songs. I won tickets to come see Jeff and his son be interviewed and play a few songs in the Sirius Radio studios. It was a very cool experience, made a bit more surreal when Chris "Mad Dog" Russo walked by the stands where we were sitting and listening.

33.
Song:
Far Far Away
Performed by: Wilco
Album: Being There
Year: 1996

Being There
is the second studio album by Wilco, released on October 29, 1996, by Reprise Records. Despite its release as a double album, Being There was sold at a single album price as a result of a deal between lead singer Jeff Tweedy and the band's label Reprise Records. The album took it's name from the Peter Sellers movie of the same name.

32.
Song: Humming Bird
Performed by: Wilco
Album: A Ghost is Born
Year: 2004

A Ghost Is Born
is Wilco's fifth studio album, released on June 22, 2004, by Nonesuch Records. It features singer Jeff Tweedy on lead guitar more than any previous Wilco album. Leroy Bach who played guitar and other instruments in the band left after the recording of this album and was replaced by Nels Cline for the subsequent tour who became a permanent member as the band's lead guitarist, A Ghost is Born was an even further departure from their Alt-Country roots and was a sonic force, despite the quiet nature of this song.
