MAD - Artist - Round 4 - #1's have been posted (12 Viewers)

Okay, ranking all-time Texas music artists in 31-songs is a fool's errand. I thought about trying to separate this into a chalk list and a deep cut list, but it would still come up (way) short - and it would be woefully short on write-ups too - cause that's who I am. So, moving to the back burner. Sorry. I'll revisit when I kick off my bicycle tour of all 254 Texas counties. ... saving for the retiremnt thread.

Gonna do something more fun instead. My playlist will consist of 31 songs that include the name of a Texas town or city in the title. Plan to limit use to one per (except Amarillo gets two for sure), and I might pull in other proper noun locales to help the playlist along (looking at you, Red River). Hopefully for some of you this will play out like the end of a Romper Room episode, where the host (me) holds up the magic mirror and calls out your town.
We've just found at least five songs for Amarillo, including one I haven't heard in fifty years (and still know the words to). You may still be in trouble. Texans write a LOT of songs.

Edit: Six songs.

Edit: Seven songs.

Edit: Eight songs.

Turn out the lights, why don't you.

I didn't count the ones that were too awful. Neil Sedaka? Nope.

I think I’ve landed on my round 5 artist - the problem will be there is a ton of material to whittle down.
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard?
Nope. The prolificness has been a source of jokes.
Still nothing. My memory is so poor.
I could potentially do an Eephus-style ranking with the 3 categories: solo work, with a group, and collaborations.
Still nothing. My old butt will just be surprised.

Not sure why I’m being sneaky - probably my fear of commitment.

There will probably be a couple songs already used by a previous MAD artist as well as a bunch from a would-be MAD artist choice that was later dropped and left unused.

Lol. I just scanned the playlists and came up with one guess. I don't associate them/him with you, so not confident.

Have we skipped over Mrs. OH's themed countdown and moved on to artist #5s already?
No, i think we are all planning for the 2025 season of MAD 31, as people are planting flags for the theme round and Part 5. I am working on who my V6 artist will be.

My understanding is it is theme round, then V5.
This is what I remember as well.

I can’t remember anything I did yesterday, but I remember this.

For which one? ;)

Time to take a break with playlist #8s. Sure, that comment would’ve been more appropriate earlier, but at least it fits a current M-AD Artist. Let’s get to some songs I choose to spotlight:

Selected (and Shuffled) Favorites:
Testify - P-Funk
Witches Burn - The Pretty Reckless
Six O’Clock - Ringo Starr
Not For You - Pearl Jam (/Eddie Vedder)
Lemons Never Forget - Bee Gees
Someday Soon - Journey
Steam Engine - My Morning Jacket
Either Way - Wilco (/Jeff Tweedy)
Too Young to Fall in Love - Motley Crue
I’ve Got a Lover (Back In Japan) - Eurythmics (/Annie Lennox)

Shuffle Adventures:
This time I want to go with the familiar and haunting “How To Disappear Completely” from Radiohead, whose mood flowed very well into Ryan Star’s “Here Son”

We can do the M-aD themed countdown next if you'd like (and I've been keeping a half-assed list of participants and their categories), but I can also wait if you'd rather do Artist Countdown #5 first. No problem either way!

Why choose? Both at the same time!! ;)

Is your wife's an artist-themed countdown?
No, she has an artist. I was about to start working on her about doing a themed one too, but I will give it a day or two before I start to push it.

ETA:  YES - she has an artist. I think my brain froze while shoveling.

@krista4

(Or people who have decided)

What are the themes so far. My wife was curious what type of stuff people are doing, and no surprise i could only remember about 2.

I’m more prepared for the theme countdown than the artist round 5. I can’t do both together either (need a lot more time for round 5 - haven’t started any list yet).

My theme list is World’s Worst Super Heroes

7. I Believe in You and Me (The Preacher's Wife Official Soundtrack, 1996)

Whitney returned to the screen the year after Waiting to Exhale with The Preacher's Wife, based on a 1947 movie based on a book written in 1928. Directed by Penny Marshall and featuring a solid to stellar cast that included Denzel Washington and Gregory Hines, as well as a smaller role for Whitney's mother, Cissy. The film was a vanity project of sorts for Washington, whose production company developed the project. Washington said that Houston's role was written with her in mind, but she had to read the script twice before finding her connection to the character. Whitney received $10 million for role, making her the highest paid African-American actress at the time and third highest paid actress for that year. Despite the star power and moderately favorable reviews, it ranked only 33rd in domestic box office receipts for the year and returned less than what it was made for. It was nominated for an Oscar, for Best Music, Original Music or Comedy Score, Five Image Awards, of which it won two, Best Actress (Houston) and Best Supporting Actress (Loretta Devine). The movie's soundtrack currently holds the title of best-selling gospel album of all time, holding the top spot on Billboard's Top Gospel Albums chart for 26 weeks when it was released.

I Believe in You and Me was originally written for and recorded by The Four Tops in 1982 but only reached #40 on the Hot Black Singles chart at the time. Whitney's version, the first single released from the soundtrack, reached #1 on Billboard's Adult R&B chart, #2 on the Adult Contemporary chart, and #4 on the Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs charts.

Over the next few years, Whitney appeared in two more movies, Cinderella and The Princess Diaries, which cut into her music output. Between 1996 and 2001, she released three albums, all of which were mostly compilations with only a handful of new material scattered across them. I have opted to fast forward past this period and rejoin her for her first album chock full of new material in four years when we resume.

Ryan StarYambagThis Could Be The Year
Ryan: “That's a song screaming out "here I am, here to show the world the cards I'm holding." And I wrote that with a friend of mine named Max Collins - he's the singer of Eve 6. We were hanging out in California, I was living with him in his house with his wife, just connecting as friends, because I used to tour with them. And we were just getting into that state of mind, we were both like, Let's just make the statement, and this is it. And that song's been fun because it's gotten out at the sporting arenas and venues where people need to prove themselves right then and there.”

Song: You and I
Artist: Wilco
Album: Wilco (The Album)
Year: 2009

You and I, we might be strangers
However close we get sometimes
It's like we never met

But you and I, I think we can take it
All the good with the bad
Make something that no one else has but

You and I, you and I

The first (and only) song on my list off the non-descript Wilco (The Album), which is best known for containing Wilco (The Song) by Wilco (The Band) – but outside of this track is a fairly average album.

I chose this song in the “Story of Our Lives” draft, and felt I gained some street cred, when wikkid responded that this was the “best new to me song” he’s heard in a long time – and he was generally not a big fan of the band.

The Clashkupcho1White Riot
Yep, another one from the debut. I don't know if White Riot has been appropriated by white nationalists (nor do I care to be so informed if it has). The fact of the matter is, if it has been, it shouldn't have. Here's the story:

For those involved in the punk scene, it was clear that, upon closer inspection, the oppression being felt across the poor working classes transcended race and culture. This notion would intertwine these two juxtaposing rhythms and not only feature on their debut in the form of ‘White Riot’ and their cover of ‘Police & Thieves’ but also on their seminal album London Calling. However, it was something Strummer and Simonon would lay down on The Clash’s debut single, ‘White Riot’, most clearly.

The duo were surrounded by police brutality and oppression as they lived in their predominantly Black neighbourhood. Seeing members of their community stopped and harassed by police was a near-daily occurrence. The tension between Notting Hill’s residents and the police was beginning to overboil, and it came to a head at the Notting Hill Carnival. The 1976 event combusted into a scene of riots and police violence as the neighbourhood refused to be bullied any further and stood up for themselves. It was a spark of rebellion that Stummer had been waiting to see for a long time.

So, to sum up, the Clash were not advocating a race war. They were advocating class warfare and asking the white kids to join in.

Leaving the event, Strummer and Simonon pondered on why white kids weren’t fighting the good fight too, and they used ‘White Riot’ to do it: “Black man gotta lot a problems / But they don’t mind throwing a brick / White people go to school / Where they teach you how to be thick.” It was a deliberate foghorn to the masses. Take direct action or be acted upon.

All the power's in the hands
Of the people rich enough to buy it
While we walk the street
Too chicken to even try it

And everybody's doin'
Just what they're told to
And nobody wants
To go to jail

White riot, I wanna riot
White riot, a riot of my own
White riot, I wanna riot
White riot, a riot of my own

I suppose I should mention the woman singing harmony on the song is Leslie Feist who performs as "Feist":
