Notes
1- This track is so out there and features an out there video, but its a whole lot of fun

2- From wiki. Sayit", an electro-punk and house song, features a "lustful" conversation between Robyn and a Speak & Spell toy over a "glitchy" techno beat.

3- Berge described the song as "a bit of an homage to the good old days of clubbing", and cited it as "the dirtiest song on the record, both in terms of production and concept."

#21 Love, Come Lighten My Load (off Americano, 2004)

Please take away my doubt
Please take away my fears
Please take away my foolish pride

(Youtube Version) Love, Come Lighten My Load
(Acoustic Version) Love, Come Lighten My Load - Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers

Why I Chose It:
This is a(nother) song that it’s easy to simply groove along with. That grabs you early and takes you along on an intriguingly funky ride. I’ll confess that the strongest part for me is where Clyne takes the singing up a notch (in both volume and in general), starting with the lyrics above. But, not surprisingly, I enjoy it from start to finish.

It’s also a song that wears its inspiration on its sleeve. A similar message and some of the style of Bob Marley, particularly “One Love”. Not the only time I’ll mention Marley on this countdown, but we’ll get to that. There’s also the guest backing vocals (from what I can determine, this is Gia Ciambotti, who’s provided vocals for more bands than I care to list, joining the band) that give it a feel of a different genre too.

Big apologies for some cringey lyrics from featured guest Q-Tip.

This song reminds me of playing hoops at the park since one of my buddies always had this playing back then.

Talking Heads
#21 Wild Wild Life

The 2nd and final song from True Stories, an album so ignore-worthy Pitchfork didn't bother with a retrospective review when covering Talking Heads in 2020. I can't say I disagree. For anyone that never really got into them, you can (pretty much) stop listening after Little Creatures.

What can I say other than it is a catchy tune. From Songfacts:
David Byrne, the most talkative of the Talking Heads, wrote "Wild Wild Life" for the 1986 movie True Stories, which he starred in and directed. He recorded the songs for the film with the band, and that became their seventh album, True Stories. Many of these songs were used in the movie with the actors replacing Byrne's vocals, but the "Wild Wild Life" film version is identical to the one on the album.

The band shot a music video for the song that was incorporated into the film, getting Byrne's bandmates into the credits. The scene is a lip-sync contest where the citizens of the fictional town of Virgil, Texas each step up to the microphone and mine a line or two of the song as a band plays it on stage. (These lip-sync battles were a trend at the time, staged at bars at a time before Karaoke became popular).

Peace of mind
Is a piece of cake
Thought control
You get on board anytime you like

Like sittin' on pins and needles
Things fall apart, it's scientific

  • Song: TVA
  • Album: Ugly Buildings, Whores and Politicians
  • Released: 2011
  • Lead Vocals: Jason Isbell

Isbell’s “TVA” was formally released on the b-sides compilation Ugly Buildings, Whores and Politicians in 2011. The song is about how the Tennessee Valley Authority changed life for people in North Alabama who previously hadn't had many opportunities to make a decent wage. Woven with the tales of teenagers taking their dates to the empty trails along the dam, it’s a flawless picture of life in rural Northwest Alabama.

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night SweatsAAABatteriesSurvivor

I’m afraid that the weight of the world is catching up to you
I’m afraid to admit that it’s catching up to me too
Does the weight continue to grow until it finally buries you?

Love the horns in this song - another somewhat unique sound from Rateliff, Survivor is the first song I've chosen from The Future album but there's still some more from that album left.

ETA - I'm really excited for @Uruk-Hai, @simey and some others to hear my next selection - will explain after the reveal.

Both of my Neil solo tunes in this list come from the excellent CSNY 74 box set, which was compiled from their 1974 "Doom Tour". It was the first time I heard this song, and I really liked it - I'm surprised it never got a proper release aside from this album / his archives releases (at least I don't think it did. @Pip's Invitation would know more). For anyone interested (and who has 3 hours to kill), here's a video of the concert at Wembly stadium. Probably the best surviving footage of that tour.

21. Nina Simone, Funkier than a Mosquito’s Tweeter (from It is Finished, 1974)
YouTube Spotify

You think you slick but could
Stand a lot of greasing
The things you do ain't never really pleasin'
Can't believe nothin' you say
'Cause I'm around and I see what you do
You know you funkier than a mosquito's tweeter
You got a mouth like a herd of boll weevils
Same old game, same old thing
Always rappin 'bout the same old thing

This song was written by Tina Turner’s sister, and was first released by Ike & Tina Turner. Nina Simone’s is pretty different from the original — taking more of an Afrobeat approach, as opposed to the funk of the original. She sang this song after leaving the United States for Barbados and around the time that she moved to Liberia. I think leaving the United States impacted her sounds a bit. The percussion here is one of my favorite parts of the song. Nina Simone’s vocals pretty powerful here too.

The song is so smooth, it is hard to pick up that is a live version until the applause at the very end. It is Finished is a live album. Nina Simone was known for demanding rapt attention from her audience, given her classical music education. She could turn it off and on depending on the audience — she was on here. I had her cover of Exuma’s 22nd Century in my #22 spot — my second favorite song from this album is Obeah Woman, based on another Exuma song.

Sia - Chronological # 21 - Electric Bird

Scoresman Rank - #7

We're ripping through my personal top 10 right now with another fun track, Electric Bird, off my favorite Sia album. I absolutely love the use of horns in this one. This should have been the fourth single off that album, but as such, it's more of a deep cut.

Consensus seems to agree that with this song, she's starting to sing about her growing fame affecting her which will become a major thing in her career going forward. Lots of metaphors here about someone who has lost their freedom or autonomy.

What if I came knocking- John Mellencamp
from Human Wheels Album

The 1st of 2 songs we will see from this 1993 album ( his 12th studio album) is "What if I came knocking." The album itself peak at 7 on Billboards top 200, but the song itself didnt chart on top 100 (it did reach #1 on the Rock Tracks chart) This is just a great straight forward rock song with great guitar and lyrics. I love the drums on this track. This one is truly underrated.

Any chance we can do something about the pace? Maybe during football season people are having a hard time keeping up?
I know im starting to fall behind
Not sure what to do here. There have been several reasons posted for not keeping up. I could take a week off , but would people actually get caught up? Would the thread die if I took a week off?

I'm glad people have been posting when they can, even if it's a few lists behind. Really never understood why people feel so compelled to always be caught up. Life happens and almost everyone falls behind at one time or another.

The last few times I've posted a list, the thread had no responses for several hours before (not last one) and it just felt like time to post a new one.

In Round 1, many people posted that they thought the pace was perfect.

My excuse is my OCD tendencies - WHAT DID I MISS!!!

My take - do whatever you need - you and Karma are doing the heavy lifting.

I’ve been having a hard time personally keeping up and haven’t been able to provide as much feedback lately. Would a solution be to go to twice a week releases - like Wednesdays and Saturdays?

I agree with this take.

I made it through the 23s. I only added 2 new to my favorites this time. There were a few more I enjoyed, and maybe on second listen I will add those as well but initially there was just enough about them that I didn't like that forced me to not add it. Here are 2 I did enjoy from start to finish

Sorrow's Child
You Should've Seen the Other Guy

Loved the bass line in Start! (The Jam) but not enough for me to add the song.

There were, probably, half dozen that were close and I"ll have a re-listen some day to see if I change my mind.

Correct,. The CSNY live version only appears on the CSNY 1974 live set. An acoustic demo that comes from a December 1973 session appears on Neil's Archives Vol. 2 -- I like it better than the electric version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9A93krVxWZM

Stills and Young attempted a studio electric version during the Long May You Run sessions. This too appears on the Archives -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0xi94dL7hM

Had the day off and listened to the 23's while working on the car and in the yard. Only had time for a once through so just going to highlight some artists I haven't mentioned much so far.
Known favs
Diamond Dogs
One Step Closer
Boys Are Back in Town
Mary Janes Last Dance

Selected liked in playlist order

Start! Nice bass and in parts sounds kind of like Taxman to me
Cowboy Movie - never heard this and like it a lot!
I Know You Know- they've been hit or miss so far, this is a big hit
Need Your Love - may have heard this before as I've seen them 8-9 times. Good stuff!
Two Cinema- have only liked the songs with female singers so far
I Got a Letter- have liked everything so far but this is a new to me like

I think we might want to consider twice a week. I'm not even listening to the whole playlist, and I can't keep up. All the TV stuff coming up isn't helping, either.

Teach Your Children

This is one of Nash's songs that probably contributed to his Hollies departure - he wrote it when he was with them, and he was definitely frustrated his songs could not get recorded. It's not my favorite CSNY (this and another one by him are probably the "lightest" songs in their catalog), but it was a big hit, and helped the Deja Vu album skyrocket. Fun fact - Jerry Garcia is on the steel pedal guitar here. And there is no "Y" in this song. Who knows what Neil was up to that day.
For as long as the Deja Vu sessions took and as many hours as Stills put in the studio, Neil actually wasn't around that much during its creation. He spent much of that time recording After the Gold Rush and playing gigs with Crazy Horse. So he only plays on half its songs -- the three he wrote or co-wrote, plus Almost Cut My Hair and Woodstock. This is further evidenced by the 4-disc 50th anniversary edition of Deja Vu, which has almost no bonus material from Neil because when he showed up, he brought songs he had already written and arranged, and just needed C, S and N to do their parts.

Known-to-me favorites from #22:

Artists Only
Teach Your Children
Stay -- probably a top 10 Bowie for me, the main guitar riff is nasty
Pop Singer -- It was very Mellencamp to release a song about not wanting to be a pop singer at the height of his commercial success
Doesn't Remind Me
Where's Summer B.?
End of the Line
All for Swinging You Around -- I think Electric Version is the best NP album and hope we get a lot more from it. It contains my #1 NP song, which I have drafted several times in various things on this board.
Dimples

Known-to-me favorites from #21:

Partyman
Wild Wild Life -- one of the few post-Speaking in Tongues TH songs that I like
Traces
Aladdin Sane
So You Want to be a Rock 'N Roll Star (Petty version)
Jessica Numbers
Can't Happen Here -- ferocious rocker, imagine if they'd come up with it when Dio was still in the band

The fall is a different beast from the summer. Especially because of football season. For most people, work is busier then too.

I finally listened to the #24 playlist.

Excluding my own song, I already knew that I liked these songs:
  • Jimmy Buffett - Margaritaville - not bothered at all by how much it has been (over)played
  • Incubus - Pardon Me
  • Tom Petty - Louisiana Rain
On first listen to this playlist, these were the unfamiliar songs I liked the best:
  • Sia - Paranoid Android - IMO not as good as the original, but still good
  • Neko Case - Set Out Running
  • Beastie Boys - Looking Down The Barrel Of A Gun
I liked other songs I didn't highlight, they just didn't rise to the same level for me as these. This was not as strong a playlist for my taste as the previous ones. I assume this will be an anomaly.

Mike ShinodaJust Win BabyLift Off

This is a song from Mike Shinoda's Post Traumatic album. It features Chino Moreno (Deftones) and Machine Gun Kelly.

Mike was planning another Fort Minor release after the Linkin Park One More Light tour. Lift Off was a song planned for that Fort Minor release, but, once Chester passed, he chose to include it on Post Traumatic.

Mike involved Chino in the song because he had already experienced the loss of Deftones bassist Chi Cheng. Mike said this about the song:

"At various points this year, as I was writing the album, I had to unplug and escape. This song came when I was in one of those moments."

Chino said this about the song:

"The main thing we talked about was when do you start back up being creative again and feeling OK about doing so. For me, as a listener to the music he's put out so far, I can tell he was dealing with that question." Chino added, "Mike is really concerned about people thinking that he's selfish for doing Post Traumatic, but like, **** that. He’s a creative person. He's in the trenches. Whether people understand it or not, he's always the dude in the trenches. When they were doing One More Light, I went to the studio with him one day and he must have had 40 or 50 ideas."

Machine Gun Kelly said this about the song:

"crazy, this was in Berlin, Germany on an off day. mike started playin that beat I wrote my verse in like 10 minutes."

Selected favorites from the #21s. Either I was particularly in the mood for music, or this was a strong round. Or both! There are many songs I enjoyed that I didn’t list here. I blame laziness. Also some busy times on my end, but mostly laziness ;). Shuffled per usual!

Familiar songs:
Autopilot - QotSA - Definitely a sentimental favorite of mine.
Can’t Happen Here - Rainbow
Wild, Wild Life - Talking Heads
People Who Died - Against Me! I just know the original, but I’ve been counting that as “familiar” since the start.

New discoveries:
The Woodpile - Frightened Rabbit(/Scott Hutchison)
Romulus - Sufjan Stevens
This Is Hip - John Lee Hooker
The Seldom Scene - Rider
Electric Bird - Sia
Blue Arrangements - Silver Jews(/David Berman)

Shuffle Adventures:
I hit New Pornographers and Neko Case back-to-back (in that order), along with Bowie [an old favorite] and Nathaniel Rateliff [a new one]. Great stuff all around!

I'm back bitches

So after only covering the 1st round, I did a listen to the 21s.
  1. Partyman- nothing but good memories of being a kid and this movie coming out
  2. Paria- I dig this a lot and appreciate them singing slowly enough that I can follow along with the Spanish
  3. Rider-I don't recall this band from the first listen, not sure who or what this is but I really liked it
  4. People Who Died- @rockaction funny I also got sort of mixed up on Against Me and Rise Against, I think I like Rise Against more
  5. Ember City- wait just one minute, I like a Mastodon song?
  6. Funkier than a Mosquito's... Nina, you possess me
  7. TVA- love this song, I like the live Isbell version more
  8. Blue Arrangements- love them all the time
  9. Cold Sweat- Thin Lizzy is basically the most pure rock and roll band ever
  10. In Spite of Ourselves- these 2 are weird but so cute, I hope they were actually a couple
  11. The Woodpile- been awhile since I've listened to this album but it still hits
  12. This is Hip- yeah it is

The Seldom Scene - Rider

This is excellent. No complaints at all.
My only 'complaint' about it is the presence of the fiddle. It was added to this studio version probably to give it more 'commercial' appeal.
Rider-I don't recall this band from the first listen, not sure who or what this is but I really liked it
It's been somewhat of a slow burn with them so far, as there wasn't much I was into on their first two albums.

When most people think of bluegrass, this is typically the kind of song they think of--fast-paced, lots of things going on. As this song shows, the Seldom Scene were more than capable of delivering that sound. What I've been showing with this list, and will show with the rest of the list, is that they, along with most bluegrass bands, offer so much more than traditional, 'backwards', 'hillbilly' music. They weren't the original group to incorporate more mainstream music into their catalog, but they were definitely the first ones to make it relatable.

Round 22

Top 5 Songs "New To Me"

  1. Holy - Frightened Rabbit
  2. Yon Ferrets Return - Neko Case
  3. Vitos Ordination Song- Sufjan Stevens
  4. Heaven or the Highway Out of Town - The Refreshments
  5. The Girl You Lost to Cocaine - Sia
Top 5 Songs "Known To Me"
  1. Stay - David Bowie
  2. Teach Your Children - CSN&Y
  3. Artists Only - Talking Heads
  4. The Most Beautiful Girl in the World - Prince
  5. Pop Singer - John Cougar Mellencamp

Other Notes
  • In the mid-nineties when grunge started fading, I hopped on the alt-country train and have been riding it ever since. I was not a big fan of Nu-Metal/Rap-Metal during that time, or since really. I really liked the Linkin Park song this round though and this round also had my second favorite Kid Rock song so far.
  • I've kind of already established which bands I will be pursuing a lot more once we are done with this exercise, with: Silver Jews, Neko Case, The New Pornographers, Roger Klyne and Sufjan Stevens all being artists that have jumped out so far. Some, I knew a little, but will be diving deeper after this. I actually started a little early with some of them.
  • MAD Round 2 is much heavier than MAD Round 1, and while I still like heavy music from time to time, it's really not something that I put on on my own often anymore so these lists have been a bit of a culture shock at times.
  • I think I only knew one Sia song, but I've been pleasantly surprised how much I've liked most of her songs so far - very unique sound.

I am going to head to their artist page on Spotify and check them out some more. I am not a bluegrass guy but my dad definitely exposed me to it and I like the general sound.

I haven't commented too much on my Sufjan songs but we had our whoopsie Christmas song, a live song, the Illinoise album, some random stuff and now have transitioned into his first State based collection, Greetings from Michigan. Being a fellow Michigander, this is the first time I became aware of his work as it got a lot of attention here. Romulus, Flint, Ypsilanti, Sleeping Bear Dunes, these are all places we know. Maybe not always love, but definitely know.

I can not believe this but I think I like Mastodon. I've checked out a few other of their more popular songs and I am actually enjoying this. Shocking honestly.
You were one I had in mind that I thought would like tracks like Show Yourself, Steambreather, etc even if it was to put on a workout playlist. I'm sure I lose most on tracks from the 1st 3 albums, but honestly thought they would be more tolerable to the masses than they seem to be.

Yeah, I am just weird with heavy stuff. I dig Metallica's early stuff. Megadeath does nothing for me any more. I can handle maybe 3 Black Sabbath songs? Deafheaven's first album is basically all screaming and growling but it's an all timer for me. I guess they maybe somehow made it melodic? Someone once tried to make me like 5 Finger Death Punch or whatever and it was traumatic for me lol. I was quite certain Mastodon was going to be giant whiff. I did not like the song from the 31 so that was confirmation bias but Ember City is great. Are there 2 singers or is the guy changing his voice because I really did the "2nd" singer aka less angry man.

They have 3 singers. 1st 3 albums just bassist and lead singing and they were growlier then as well. After that, they got less growly and the drumming started singing more, and he has the "cleanest" vocals of the 3.

Yeah I think I like that guy.

If you like Ember City and missed the last few playlists, I think you will also dig tracks 6-10 as well. Lots of Brann singing on those. I'd guess he is the singer you are talking about, but would have to relisten

Once when our mother called
She had a voice of last year's cough
We passed around the phone
Sharing a word about Oregon
When my turn came
I was ashamed

I love Sufjan, he's just so simply honest. Even though he is clearly highly intelligent, nothing is remotely complicated. The music is circular, the lyrics are direct.

@Ilov80s - listened to Ember City, and I think it's an odd track that has just Troy and Brann singing. Troy is the bassist and the deep/growl sound of the 3. Brent is more nasal sounding, or that's how I describe it at least. Usually it's a 3, Troy + Brent, or Brann + Brent.

Yeah Brann is the guy I like for sure but it's funny because once he comes on I feel better and am more willing to accept Troy's growl parts. Not sure that makes sense.
