The Seldom Scene - Rider

This is excellent. No complaints at all.

My only 'complaint' about it is the presence of the fiddle. It was added to this studio version probably to give it more 'commercial' appeal.

Rider-I don't recall this band from the first listen, not sure who or what this is but I really liked it

It's been somewhat of a slow burn with them so far, as there wasn't much I was into on their first two albums.

When most people think of bluegrass, this is typically the kind of song they think of--fast-paced, lots of things going on. As this song shows, the Seldom Scene were more than capable of delivering that sound. What I've been showing with this list, and will show with the rest of the list, is that they, along with most bluegrass bands, offer so much more than traditional, 'backwards', 'hillbilly' music. They weren't the original group to incorporate more mainstream music into their catalog, but they were definitely the first ones to make it relatable.

I am going to head to their artist page on Spotify and check them out some more. I am not a bluegrass guy but my dad definitely exposed me to it and I like the general sound.

You're going to learn some things that I'm waiting to reveal later, as my list is chronological/historical. I've said this before and I'll admit it again here: The current iteration of the band arguably has more 'pedigree' than the original lineup, and they're no doubt doing the name proud; my problem is not only don't they hold the same sentimental value as the original(s), their continuing existence reminds me of what my father and I both have lost.

I've been quiet most of October, but I plan to be more involved again starting in November. I started a new job Monday and am still actively involved in the transition at my previous employer, so to say there's been a lot going on would be a vast under statement. While the new job is already very busy it appears I'll finally start having some desk time beginning next week. I'm sure I missed a lot of great stuff and not that anyone other than me cares, but I'm gonna pick up where we are then work backwards as time allows. I'm not gonna finish the 21's today, but I am gonna highlight one track from the first 30 - The Sledom Scene's 'Rider' got both a 'whoa' and a replay. If I could double heart that one I would.

1- This was the B Side to their debut single Suffer the Children. Simple in style. It’s a brutal attack on his father as adolescent teens are want to do. Not without justification

2-When Roland Orzabal was growing up – first in Portsmouth and later in Bath – his parents ran an entertainment agency for working men’s clubs. Among the guests auditioning at his home were singers, ventriloquists and strippers; even his mother was a stripper.

3- If this sounds like a boisterous childhood, behind the curtains things were less happy. Orzabal’s parents were at loggerheads: his father, a WW2 veteran, was far from healthy and given to fits of fury that drove his wife away after bursts of domestic violence.

Not sure what to do here. There have been several reasons posted for not keeping up. I could take a week off , but would people actually get caught up? Would the thread die if I took a week off?

I'm glad people have been posting when they can, even if it's a few lists behind. Really never understood why people feel so compelled to always be caught up. Life happens and almost everyone falls behind at one time or another.

The last few times I've posted a list, the thread had no responses for several hours before (not last one) and it just felt like time to post a new one.

In Round 1, many people posted that they thought the pace was perfect.

So are we taking a week off? I may have missed the final resolution on this.

For the record, I am behind by a few playlists, but I'm fine with the pace and will catch up when able.

Thank you for the post, @Eephus . I'm rocking The Red Album now, and I had forgotten how good it is. Despite my love of a few bands, I still don't branch out and look for much different metal. Too picky maybe. I had Ghost, Kylesea, and High on Fire written down as ones I remember liking more than others and that was my next step of exploration. Baroness is now at the top of that list.

There is a ton of core DNA between the groups, and both out of GA it looks like. Just on first re-introduction, it feels like when they branch out from their heavy core, Mastodon drifts a bit more prog or technical death metal. Baroness seems to sink into more of a Kyuss-type stoner grove, and it's great.

don't know how many here watched Ricky Gervais' HBO series "Extras" - if so, you remember the Bowie appearance on the show

this so clearly shows Bowie's brilliance, not only with comedic timing but I really wish we could get this entire song - it's so cruel, makes you squeamish in the perfect David Brent way - but the tune and the vocals I could hear over and over.

20. Muddy Water

This is the third of six songs from their Act III album, another personal favorite and one I saw them perform live multiple times.

It was written by a young bluegrass singer/guitarist from New England, by the name of Phil Rosenthal. Unlike one of their previous covers of a current song, City of New Orleans, Muddy Water was not covered by any other act before the 'Scene, making it an original of sorts. The author himself is on record as saying he drew his inspiration for the song when he attended Woodstock. I don't really see it, so maybe he just meant the title. Either way, this is another song that means more to me as I get older.

ETA: On this song and Rider, there is a fiddle. While the band has no resident fiddle player, it was somehow deemed necessary to have one for this album, my guess is to make the songs more bluegrass sounding. FWIW, One-time wunderkind Ricky Skaggs provides the fiddle playing on this album. He was 19 at the time this album was recorded, and while he never joined the 'Scene, he did spend some time as a member of The Country Gentlemen early in his illustrious career.

Why I Chose It:
This one’s mostly (if not completely) autobiographical. Clyne really did make a trip to Kino Bay, Mexico to spread the ashes of his friend Michael O’Hare (per his last wishes), who died at 30 due to cystic fibrosis. So yeah, definitely a passionate song, with a lot of emotion carried over into the performance.

Of course, a good story doesn’t always make for a good song. [Trust me, there’s another song that’s based on a true story that didn’t come close to this list.] It’s a slow and soft ride; a somber and rather melancholy trip. If also a reflection of good times and good friends. Also the line from the chorus “Did you go down laughin’ when you finally fell” ties into another song we’ll see down the line.

This song is from the Linkin Park Reanimation album, which is the 4th best selling remix album of all time. That album peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart. There are a lot of artists who contributed to this album, including members of Staind, Deftones, Korn, Taproot, Orgy, Jurassic 5, X-Ecutioners, the Roots, and a number of underground rappers and guest producters.

This is a remix of the song Forgotten from the Hybrid Theory album. It was created by The Alchemist, known for his work with multiple artists including Eminem. It features Chali 2na from Jurassic 5, who has a rap verse on the track.

Chali 2na said about the song:

"I do appreciate the fact that cats like Linkin Park are able to reach out to cats like us and put us on a listening plateau to where people who don’t normally listen to rap or who only listen to the pop aspect of it will get to see other things. They’re exposing them to other things. They didn’t take the easy way out. They wasn’t calling the P. Diddys — no disrespect to them cats. … They was calling cats they respect, and I appreciate that and I respect them more for that."

I think this is pretty different than most of the tracks in my playlist. Enjoy!

The song Once They Banned Imagine is referring to a list of songs that were not played on the radio in the aftermath of 9/11 and what that says about our personal liberty, that we’re meant to be defending?

This song goes back further into this particular political cycle. We’re still living with everything we did in reaction the events of 9/11, for better or worse and unfortunately it’s mostly worse. We needed the voice of reason really bad at that time and sadly it was nowhere to be found. We couldn’t **** our pants fast enough and we made some terrible mistakes. We were scared and angry and with a political administration who were looking for a reason to exploit that event for their own ends and they did. I don’t buy any of the conspiracy theories. I don’t think anyone allowed it to happen but they certainly exploited it once it did happen.

The song ‘Imagine’ wasn’t exactly banned but it was on a list of songs that were recommended not to be played by the corporate conglomerate that owned most of the mainstream radio stations. They sent out a memo with a list of songs that Americans really didn’t need to hear at that time. Can you think of a better song to hear at that time, after a religious maniac had just committed those acts, than one that says “Imagine no religion”?

Basically, this song reminds us that we’ve been facing the same culture wars forever. Our 2nd and final song from John's 14th studio Album(1996) is also the last time he would have a top 40 hit... peaking at #14. Everytime I hear this song I just cant help but smile. Its got a great vibe to it and is really great lyrically... expressing the excitement of unexpectedly meeting someone and being struck by their presence. Its a song I can just put on repeat and listen to few time over( in fact I just have this morning)

Although this would be John's last commercially successful song... the rest of this playlist will be hit after hit many top 20 classic await.

#20 Swamp

This is about as funky as Talking Heads get. Prince should thank his lucky stars that Belly fell between them this round so that he wasn't embarrassed. In fairness to Prince, this was only his 3rd album and he was still finding his groove.

Meanwhile, on Talking Heads' 5th album, Speaking in Tongues, they'd finally ditched Brian Eno and could finally get their groove on. Swamp makes nuclear conflagration sound alarmingly fun.
