MAD's ROUND 2!! # 1's have been posted!! (1 Viewer)

I will take Mike Shinoda, which enables me to draw from his solo work, Linkin Park, and a few others.

I hope someone other than me in this group likes this music (or comes to like it through this exercise).
I'll listen to all 31 songs in their entirety.
An open mind? Sure, but I don't have high hopes.

I had several artists I was sure would be shut out of my new-to-me favorites list in the first one of these. It turned out every artist got at least three appearances! :)

But I'd have a tougher time with a few of these selections, I think.

I’ll play. I’m going with the best rock band of all time, black midi.

They only have about 30 songs total so far so I’ll probably go with the 20 minimum as some of them might be a bit much for a general audience.
A word of advice, unless the songs 21-30 are absolute stinkers its best to join the rest of us at the 31 mark.
I dont know about anyone else, but i felt the artists that joined late last time got overlooked a bit more.

Still, always interesting to have a new artist to listen to. Welcome aboard

But I'd have a tougher time with a few of these selections, I think.
There's surely a few artists this round I "know" aren't going to be my cup of tea - but there was a few surprises in the last round so willing to go in open-minded.
I think that is all of us can really ask for, mixed in with some trust. I thought the same as your post, and said as much about artists like Elton, The Kinks, and others. My best surprises in these have been from artists I've been sure I didn't like or wouldn't. I think this time around my attitude is more on the lines of embracing what is thrown at me. Yes, that would even apply to a Banjo Christmas album set to a reggae beat. I'm willing to digest whatever somebody is putting the time into.

I know my artist is one people might be bracing themselves for. I was talking a bit to 80s, and IMO if anybody can be openminded metal on the lines of Metallica/Slayer/Maiden/Sabbath, they can get through at least 20+ of my songs and the core album of my thesis. I approached my playlist in a way of attempting to convert a few naysayers, so there is purposeful smoothing of the edges to the song choices. I will be interweaving the evolution of their sound in-between songs from an album, so while there is a few that are pretty heavy and guttural, it is also with intent to show how much different the same dudes sound now when doing largely the same thing in the music. If I remember correctly, there is only 7 from their first 3 albums and even one or two of those aren't that bad, IMO. I also think at least 3 songs from this playlist have been on other random playlists in GP or even in these MAD adventures, and I think more liked them than I was expecting, which also made me think this selection would largely be OK with the masses.

Also, as we do these, the tie-ins will become more and more fun. I think that how we can also reel in some people who might be hesitant. I posted in the other thread Mastodon's cover of AIC. I probably won't do covers in my playlists, but they also do a great cover of Orion and Stairway to Heaven. The drummer is jokingly called "Fill Collins" because Phil was one of his influences, he now sings, and he murders his snare with a fill about every 5secs. Bassist tours with Thin Lizzy now. 3 of them have side projects with artists that could easily come up. It will be fun to see and hear more and more of this as we go.

Boys, boys. I'm lusciously sorry (say it like the weird scientist guy from South Park). There's just no way I'm going to be able to do the forty song list again. Therefore, in honor of the spirit where you post and listen, I'm gonna have to drop out. Will it hurt not to share El-P's greatness? Yes, it will. I feel like he's a worthy candidate to explore. But I just don't have the spare time to do the lists this time. Maybe next time.

Again, I'm sorry. On the plus side, RTJ is now officially open for business.

Bummer, I was looking forward to your list.

I don’t think it’s required to listen to the playlists of other groups. It’s fine to me if people only rank their own groups and maybe provide some commentary of their own lists from time to time. There were people that did that in round 1 and the overall experience wasn’t impacted negatively.

I hope you reconsider.

Reconsider the covers. I think they could be a great way to help people connect with an artist. Mastodon, for example, is not a metal band I’ve really heard much, but being a huge Metallica and Zepellin fan, the covers you mention really intrigue me.

Sia has a couple of incredibly well done covers that I will definitely be including.

Same, I was going to post similar. The listening of every playlist doesn't have to be part of the deal (but I understand people WANTING to be able to keep up with listening), and as I suggested to Krista, maybe a once every 3rd or 5th list would be enough to get a ton of new music and probably gives people an idea of what artists they might want to look into more.

Thanks, Yo Mama. I wasn't saying it was required for others. I just can't see myself getting in the spirit of listening to stuff I even like. It's just a time crunch and a bit of a wherewithal thing, and I'm on the wrong side of it.

I also had thought of declining right away, but everybody seemed so excited and happy, and who doesn't want to be around that? I just don't have the time to create and curate and then listen. Simple as that. Thanks for the indulgence, ladies and gentlemen. Some excellent artists to be counted down here by some excellent and thoughtful people.

I hear what you're saying, I just typically don't like covers myself, so it would have to be something great for me to consider it anyway for a playlist. They are great intros as a bridge into both, and that is reason why Orion was in for the longest time, but in the end I put a song in that I was avoiding because it's heavy emotionally, but it's the better choice for the playlist and their story. Instead I will try to connect them with more familiar bands as I talk about influences on them - e.g. I hear a lot of Cliff Burton in Troy from Mastodon.

Ah bummer.
I loved your Daft Punk list. I just was trying to find a way to justify expressing it as my approaches to listening to lists went haywire.
There seems to be 3 ways to approach this exercise

A) Do your own list, submit and be done with it. Hi Tim
B) Do your own list, talk and contribute about your artist. No time for other lists
C) Do and talk about your artist and try and listen to all the others and contribute what you can

You dont have to be in Category C
Being in category a and b is fine. Its all music those of us who can, enjoy and talk about.
No requirement for you to talk about your own stuff

Hope you reconsider

As one of the participants that submitted less than 30 songs last time (and *spoiler altert* this one as well), I'd like to share a couple thoughts...

1. I went into building my list with the idea that the songs would be ones that meant something to me; right or wrong, that didn't add up to 31 and I have no regrets.
2. I toyed with the idea of filling out the list with songs from a different artist, kind of like an 'opening act'. As luck would have it, there was a band with the exact amount of songs I liked that would have bridged the gap, but @Zegras11 rightly pointed out, there probably would have been some confusion, so I shelved the idea. Too bad they had way less than 31 songs, though, as I'm sure you all would have gotten a kick out of Lancelot Link and The Evolution Revolution.
3. I honestly didn't think that Donald Fagen/Steely Dan was overlooked, rather they were known by most and minds were already made up.
4. All that said, you do you.

No Quiet Riot for you!
More accurately, I usually don't like covers when I know they are covers before listening.
Hopefully Nina Simone proves an exception as I’m expecting to include a handful, but I think her covers are exceptional.
I'm guessing hers will fall into the category of me not knowing the original, but we will see. It's not that I hate covers (well, there is that NIN cover I hate that most love) just usually prefer the original. They are fun, for sure.

Obviously up to you but I think there’s ways of working music into busy days - and like others have said just “doing your best” is good enough for something like this.
It’s fun. It’s not that serious.

Something deep inside me wants to pick Nickleback or ICP or something next round just to hear what forced positive things you all have to say about the songs.

There’s also the rule of “if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything” - I think you’d get a lot of silence (and a lot of skips unbeknownst to you).

I don't mind Nickelback, they are good at what they do. Everyone claims to hate them but they were one of the top grossing rock acts for like 10 years and sold a boatload of albums.
Don't like ICP but my cousin's horse was in one of their videos but forget the song name.

Hmm, I have 3 covers in my list
Y'all chipping away at my anti-covers (or more accurately Meh covers) stance, aren't you? ;)

I don't know Cornell's solo work at all, which was a reason I was considering it as well. Is doing covers part of his thing, and they are on his main albums? I guess that would be my other random line - if that is a normal part of the artist's thing. I think the Dinosaur Jr version of Just Like Heaven is a decent version. It's also one of their more popular songs and one that is played at seemingly every show - that level of love is where I am left scratching my head. 95% of the time I just think something on the lines of "that was good, but I'd rather listen to Dinosaur Jr play their songs, not The Cure's". Again, that's just me, and sometimes I'm in the mood for it too. At work we had a metal playlist that was just covers of goofy pop songs and it's a blast. I just decided for this playlist if I am only getting 31 songs, I'm just going to choose 31 of their songs. I would have been more prone to keep it if wasn't the double whammy of being a cover AND an instrumental. It was a sore spot in the playlist I was obsessing about, but I know I made the right choice. I planned on putting a couple of the covers on the playlist at the end if I do 10 or so bonus songs again. They do a Feist cover that is quite interesting as well. A ZZ Top cover was on a Transformers movie as well, I think. All good, but I think their Stairway to Heaven cover is the worst of the bunch. They did it as a tribute to their manager who died a few years ago, but it doesn't match their sound like that AIC cover does.

I've been thinking about this. If it's OK with @Zegras11, perhaps I could do something like make several selections in a row early (like the 31 through 28 positions), do every other for awhile afterwards, and then finish things off with my top 10. That way it wouldn't seem like I'm joining late and I'm still finishing strong.

If that would be too difficult to manage, I'll figure something else out. Just a thought.

I think this crew is all over for what is going to irritate who, I'd be open to all you named. Even stuff like Kid Rock and Linkin Park I'd put in a similar bucket as the two you mention as far as being tougher nuts to crack with this group. For me Nickleback sounds like the most painful, I'd dig a few songs.

A) Do your own list, submit and be done with it. Hi Tim

If I could do this, I'd do a list myself, but I just feel way too bad about that. And it doesn't do an artist justice. Tim was fortunate because his artist (Elton John) was already well known, but with a lesser-known, I feel like explaining your love for them really can be important.

That's great to hear and it is much appreciated that you expressed it just now. I was going to send you a PM asking for help or anything you could contribute to the Daft part of it, but it kept coming out sounding wrong. Trust that your input is indeed appreciated.

This is just because you don't want to have to bite your tongue while pretending to say something nice about an anarcho-folk-punk band, right?

The rockaction Punk Hundred had this in its countdown:

56) Against Me! – Turn Those Clapping Hands Into Angry Balled Fists

;) backatcha. Thanks for the kind words, too.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words and emojis. I definitely hear it and I appreciate it.

The Jam did quite a few covers. Most were B-sides and outtakes from album sessions that surfaced on rarities compilations, but a few made it onto albums and one was released as an A-side. Dunno yet if any will make my list.
