Prince No. 27 -- Nothing Compares 2 U (from the One Night Alone collection)

Prince first recorded Nothing Compares 2 U in 1984 (so right around the time of Purple Rain). He decided he didn't want to release it and instead gave it to one of his protege groups, The Family. Then Sinead recorded it in 1990 and Prince started playing it in concerts. A version with Rosie Gaines made The Hits compilation in the early 90s. The YouTube link included is from his New Years Eve 1999 PPV special, which I bought and played at my New Year's Eve party that year. That's also with Rosie.

The version I chose, however, is from 2002, from the One Night Alone set. I chose it, ironically, because of the lack of Rosie. So it's kind of funny how JML talked about taking points off of Chelsea Rodgers for the female vocal. Because I kind of feel the same way. This version is pretty much all Prince, although fans of 1990's pop saxophonists will enjoy the Candy Dulfer shoutout. I'm trying to decide if Candy was the third most famous pop/rock saxophonist of that era. Obviously, Kenny G. was first. And the Big Man was probably still a bigger deal. But then it's either Candy or G.E. Smith, I'd say. Are you a Prince and Aresenio Hall Show fan? Or do you ride with Hall & Oates and SNL?

GE Smith is a guitarist. Hall & Oates’ saxophonist is (then and now) Charles DeChant.

Notes
1- After the release and success of the Hurting LP and Mad World in particular, the band were heavily pressured by the record company to come up with something new. Anything.

2- The bands songwriter Roland Orzabal went blank. He had written the entirety of the Hurting LP by himself. This is what it sounds like when doves cry, writers block hits. In desperation he turned to Curt to help, then the keyboardist and drummer who were/werent considered part of the band. Keyboardist Ian Stanley eventually co wrote 5 of the 8 Songs from the Big Chair with Orzabal. The drummer Manny Elias cowrote the same number of songs as Curt Smith, One. Check out the dynamite lyrics quoted above to realise the band had nothing to say and recorded it anyway.

3- The co producer of the record , also co wrote this song. 5 cowriters. To make this. Producer was Chris Hughes, formerly Merrick in Adam and the Ants. He would also produce Songs from the Big Chair and cowrite Everybody Wants to Rule the World

4- Roland diplomatically said after doing this he realised the band and his songwriting needed to change direction. Curt was a bit more blunt. He called it “the worst thing we've done”

5- It only appears on one compilation, a rag tag CD of b sides and oddities. And the Super Double Plus Deluxe CD edition of Songs from the Big Chair

Only knew the tracks by Prince,Kid Rock, CSNY and Petty of the 27's.
This was my least fav playlist so far. Not because it had more songs I didn't like but had less I really,really liked.
Of the artists I knew basically nothing about these are my favs so far
Sia, Against Me, Neko Case , Nina Simone, Pointer Sisters, and Nathaniel Rateliff.
I've seen Drive By Truckers and Los Lobos live at least twice each and liked them so somewhat familiar. Liking what's been posted so far.
Only familiar with the Dio years of Rainbow and the album Stone Cold is on. Liking the deeper and newer tracks so far.
Love the blues so have liked all the Hooker stuff so far and probably all of it.
Don't really listen to classical music but I've kinda liked the playlist finishing up with some.

27. The Bitterest Pill (I Ever Had to Swallow)

Released as a single? Yes (UK #2)

The Bitterest Pill (I Ever Had to Swallow) was The Jam's second-to-last single, released shortly before Paul Weller announced he was breaking up the band. It was also one of the band's four videos I remember from the early years of MTV. A soul ballad with prominent strings and female harmonies, the song is basically a template for the sound Weller would pursue with The Style Council. Though its melody and arrangement is more successful than a lot of what that band would produce. The band's previous incorporations of soul tended to be influenced by Motown, but this one is more derived from Philly International. The tune is a breakup song, and one has to wonder how much Weller is singing about a lover and how much he is singing about the band. (It's telling that in the video, the girl leaves Weller for drummer Rick Buckler.)

IMO tonight's will be closer to your reaction for #1. It's the album they started in with Brann singing some and the other two eased up on the growls a tad. Also for you and others to keep in mind, while 3 of the first 5 were examples of their heavier sound, only 7 were of that era overall on the playlist. So at the start of the playlist we are batting 60% and I would understand people wanting to bail a bit, but only 4 of the last 26 songs are going to be that way. Meaning only 15% of the songs from those 3 albums going forward. Not to say there aren't heavier songs coming up from Emperor, but they aren't as harsh.

I've been keeping up with the listening, but not with the writeups (besides Mastodon and horror movie rambles). Here are random musings from the #28s and 27s.

Like others, Los Lobos and Sia stand out so far as surprises of the draft for me. There hasn't been a song of either I haven't really liked yet.
A few others have been a tier below in that I've liked most more than I expected. Against Me! was one main one. I don't seem to like punk much, and I assumed I wouldn't like much here. Also with the country leaning acts I haven't had any issues getting through and also really liked most. That would be John Prine, Neko, DBTs, Nick Cave and I feel a couple others I am missing.
There's another big group of acts that I was sure I'd like and they haven't disappointed with the tunes so far. That would be Ms. Simone, Prince, Tanya, Melloncamp, Cheap Trick, Ben Folds, and a few others.

I have officially warmed up to The Jam. Not full embrace yet, more like THIS?
Kid Rock. In a good way. He has to be the king of dumb, DGAF, 2 fingers up rock, and I am here for it.
This round's winners of my "weed doesn't make everything better" award are Black Midi . I can hear the talent but I find the music both fascinating and terrifying. Bauhaus was the reason last round that I had to stop with the random button, because it freaked me out when it came on randomly at night. I need to be prepared, or listen in the morning.

I've already added a song from all artists and I feel like I've talked about a lot of others already that I didn't mention above. Great playlist and group of artists again - thanks for the great music, all!

It's not too surprising but...

Sufjan's newest album "Javelin" was released this last week and he dedicated it to his late partner. This is the first time he's come out as gay. My favorite headline is from "them" (whatever that publication is): "Sufjan Stevens songs were always gay and were always about God". They missed that they were also always about birds, but yeah that headlines pretty much nails it. Sad to hear the love of his life passed so young though. There is nothing on my playlist from the new album but it's so good. Like near masterpiece level good. Well worth checking out if you have any interest in him.

I am not super familiar but after he passed from COVID and Krista recommended him pretty heavily, I gave him a flyover and was blown away. I already know his songs are likely to be my favorite of this exercise. I have absolutely loved whats been included from him so far. Such an underappreciated singer songwriter.

I've been listening to a lot of Sufjan with his new album and making the playlist, also listening to a ton of Dinosaur Jr after I got into them from the last countdown (shoutout @KarmaPolice ) and it suddenly dawned on me, I'm just listening to a bunch of religious music. I always knew Sufjan's music was coming from a Christian POV if not overtly Christian but it took me awhile to realize so many of the Dino Jr songs were religious and then I googled Mascis and see he's Hindu and a teetotaler so that just makes sense. They aren't nearly as overt as Sufjan and it caught me off guard. No real opinion on listening to all this spiritual music, it's cool I guess. The music is top tier so I'll listen to a great song about anything, even John Wayne Gacy I suppose.

I mean all this as no real offense to Kid Rock, btw, even though the jet skiers are the bane of my freaking existence out there.

PG County survivor here, been in AACO for 20 years now. Don't own any watercraft so I've never seen the Pasadenans at their peak. My rancor for that 'burg comes mostly from my son's youth sports days, which also took us to Catonsville a few times over the years as well. Liked the vibe a little better.

Southern Rock Opera was the group’s break-out album, and started the bands fascination with the “duality of the South” – trying to convince it’s audience that the South is not all red-neck racists and gun nuts. Lynrd Skynyrd and Neil Young are main characters throughout the album geared towards telling us not to believe everything we’ve heard. There was no feud between Young and the Southern rock legends, in fact Young was a pallbearer at Van Zant’s funeral.

This song is about a flight that happened shortly before the plane crash that killed Skynrd members Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gains. Before that last flight another plane they were on had some engine troubles and band members did not want to get back on it for the next leg and Ronnie yelled at everyone to “shut up and get back on the plane”.

I heard this version before I heard the Arlo Guthrie version. Go figure.

Fun fact for you: despite having the most famous version of this song, Arlo Guthrie did not write it. The actual author, Steve Goodman, also collaborated with John Prine and Jimmy Buffett (may see a song or two of his show up on @-OZ- and/or @landrys hat 's lists later on). A lifelong Cubs fan, he also wrote our bonus track #5: Go Cubs Go.

26. Nina Simone, Take Me to the Water (from The High Priestess of Soul, 1967)

My past few songs have been written by others, but I’m back to a song written by Nina Simone here.

As I’ve mentioned, Nina Simone’s mother was a Methodist minister, and she has some gospel songs where can see that influence — this one about baptism. Everything just kind of adds up here for me: Nina Simone’s wavy and passionate singing, the call-and-response elements with the background vocals, and then Nina Simone’s flourishes on the piano near the end. I’m not that religious, but just enjoy the beauty of those elements working together.

Next up is a song that actor-playwright Sam Shepard became so entranced by while working as a busboy at The Village Gate during one of Nina Simone’s performances that it got him fired from his job.

#26 Prince- She's Always in My Hair (from Around the World in a Day)

I absolutely recommend checking out the YouTube link for this one. It's a late performance with 3rd Eye Girl. And at one point, Prince introduces "Donna" and you think "Wow, he's going to let someone else handle the guitar solos!" Ha ha, no. The recorded version from 1985 has a nice guitar solo at the end. But my theory is that Prince started really upping the solo when he performed this song after D'Angelo recorded a very well received cover of the song.

The song itself is another of those that is popular with Prince-heads but maybe a little less well-known among casuals. It was released as a B-Side to both Raspberry Beret and Paisley Park and Pop Life was the other charting single off Around the World In a Day (which I think is understandably underrated as it was the follow-up to Purple Rain).

Not sure I've commented on Collective Soul yet, but I've loved the tunes so far. They are in an embarrassingly big group of artists I largely wrote off for one reason or another back in the day. Mostly that I thought I was too cool or metal for it, honestly. Too radio-friendly?

I've realized how much good music I wasn't listening to back then thanks to these playlists and drafts over the years.
