MAD's ROUND 2!! # 1's have been posted!! (1 Viewer)

Homme 15:

The final selection from Kyuss, Love Has Passed Me By takes us back to their first album Wretch in the early 90's, and for me is clearly the peak of what the band has done. Short at just over three minutes, it's a pretty simple rock track, the only song off the album co-written by Homme with drummer Brant Bjork. I'm liking the straight up guitar + drums = rock equation on this one.

Homme 14:

Moving forward near two decades, Them Crooked Vultures was a short lived supergroup featuring Homme, John Paul Jones on bass and Dave Grohl on drums, releasing just their self titled debut to date, while rumours and murmurings of a second album continue. Caligulove was an album track here, and while the album as a whole has been described by someone somewhat critically as a second-tier QOTSA album, there's some definite highlights on it, mixing the QOTSA sound of the time with some of the natural Zep/Nirvana influences which you'd expect given the line-up. Would definitely be cool to see a second album at some stage but we'll just have to work with the one for now.

Homme 13:

Going back again to early Queens stuff, Feel Good Hit Of The Summer was the opening track off their second album Rated R, and is a quick sub-3 minute blast of rock silliness, basically written around a couple of riffs, some nice brief guitar solos and crazy lyrics just listing exactly what got Homme so wasted at one party at the time. Said lyrics drew some criticism based on the general content, to which wise observers would point out that there's a clue in the album title.

Should get 12-9 up later this evening

Unsurprisingly, my top 2 artists in my Spotify Wrapped were the two artists I've done in these countdowns - although I do think both would have been Top 5 anyway.

1. Ryan Adams
2. Drive-By Truckers
3. Willie Nelson
4. Wilco
5. Grateful Dead
Yeah my top 2 were from this exercise:

1. Beastie Boys - round 2

2. Genesis - round 1

3. De La Soul - earlier in the year after their catalog finally dropped

4. Doves - my favorite new to me group from the 1st round

5 - Rush - they’re pretty much in there every year

Thanks to Phish, Big Thief, and The Decembrists, Spotify thinks I’m from Burlington, VT.

LOL, the MAD rankings were a big impact on my top 5 artists as well:
1. The Decemberists
2. Talking Heads
3. The Hold Steady
4. Gorillaz
5. Big Thief

Apparently I'm also from Burlington, VT. WTF?

Lastly, if anyone can explain to me what #s 3 and 5 are below, well, TIA
1. Rock
2. Indie Rock
3. Crank Wave
4. Alternative Rock
5. Bubblegrunge

ETA: my top 5 songs were much more indicative of what I've been listening to this year but I think [gob] they've made a huge mistake [/gob].
I'll put it in as song zero

0. Feel Good by slowthai
1. I Don't Know What You See in Me by Belle & Sebastian
2. Tropic Morning News by The National
3. spite by Billy Nomates
4. Retributions Of An Awful Life by Heartworms
5. Sideways Skull by The Hold Steady

5. Grateful Dead
Yup. I've never gotten a recorded message from a band before. Is that new?

Opeth was unseated by Mastodon and Dino, so they were #3. My #4 and #5 were new, but also 2 artists that I have a playlist loaded for, so I won't say who they are. ;)

I guess I listened to The Motherload about 130 times, and was in the top .005% of Mastodon listeners.

5. Bubblegrunge

I'm sure I saw Bubblegrunge live when I was at uni

I thought it was odd all 5 of my top 5 were Mastodon songs too, but I'm pretty sure they were the 5 songs in the middle of the playlist I hyped up: Motherload --> Ember City.

Top 5 genres:

Rock
Singer-Songwriter
Alternative Rock
New Wave
Classic Rock

They also think I'm from Burlington, VT.

Mine had a song I’ve never heard of - so unless that always came on after I fell asleep, I don’t see how it’s possible.

The real five were
1. Maybe a Moment - Justin Townes Earle
2. Outfit - Drive-By Truckers
3. And It’s Still Alright - Nathaniel Rateliffe
4. Feats Don’t Fail Me Now - Little Feat
5.(6.) Do I Look Worried - Tedeschi Trucks Band

Not really sure how accurate that is either but it’s not outlandish like having some song by Perpetual Groove in there.

TIE Version - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Zo6UnKr6Bwg&pp=ygUdcm95a3NvcHAgbW9udW1lbnQgdGllIHZlcnNpb24=

Year - 2014
Appears on - Do it Again EP plus the TIE version is on the Inevitable End LP
Vocalist - Robyn
Key Lyric - So that when the moment comes,
I can say I did it all with love
Love, love
All with love

Notes
1- The EP opens with "Monument", a 10-minute track inspired by the clay sculptures of Brazilian-American artist Juliana Cerqueira Leite that Robyn saw at London's Saatchi Gallery.[10] The song's minimal instrumentation consists of a "stretched-out" saxophone outro and synthesised bass,[11][12] while lyrically, Robyn stated it is "about death", "defining who you are" and "a physical sensation of an emotion"

2- According to Berge, the three of them were "in a particular place and space in our lives, where things were perhaps a bit bleak. So, in a way, we were all starting from square one, with no real intention other than to take our time and make what we wanted. And value every opinion, and I think that that translated well into the music."[6] The duo commented that Do It Again "doesn't sound like Röyksopp featuring Robyn or Robyn produced by Röyksopp, it's just something else entirely. The word 'collaboration' has never before been more justified in the world of music!"

Top 5 Artists
1. Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers (top 2% of all listeners)
2. Alice in Chains (round 1)
3. Decemberists (round 1, plus running the playlist a few times)
4. Rush (round 1, but this is... relatively normal)
5. The Police (round plus the British M-AD countdown)

Songs: 4,262. Minutes: 21,330

Bonus: I listened to 69 genres. Nice!

21,555 minutes
3437 songs
655 artists
44 genres - rock, stoner, Indie, singer-singwriter, alternative

Top artists
1) Clutch (top .05%)
2) Audioslave
3) Metric( top 1% and thanks video)
4) Soundgarden
5) The Pretty Reckless

I'm on the low end of things it seems but 5 years ago would probably be half the time and probably 50ish artists.
First time The Beatles or Iron Maiden didn't make my top 3

Selected favorites from the #9s. The 8s may be released by the time I’m finished writing this up, but them’s the breaks. It’s hard not to repeat myself talking about the quality of the lists, so let’s just get right to it.

Familiar songs:
A Small Victory - Faith No More
Gates of Babylon - Rainbow
Rider - The Seldom Scene - Not under this name, but yeah, definitely recognizable.
In The City - The Jam
Shadow on the Sun - Audioslave/Chris Cornell

New discoveries:
Myriad Harbor - New Pornographers
One Time One Night - Los Lobos
Not the Same - Ben Folds
Illegal Smile - John Prine
Monument - Royksopp

Shuffle Adventures:
There was a bit of a “cover” theme this round, and Shuffle hit it with (Clint Black and) The Pointer Sisters, then Kim Mitchell, then John Mellencamp. Of course, the last song is covered instead of being a cover. But still!

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night SweatsAAABatteriesI'm on Your Side

I often think of my wife when listening to songs - this one is no different but it's my go to song when we've been fighting and to remind her we are in this together - not to get too deep in to it but I have a great marriage and wonderful partner but we've had a tough year from external sources and her going through a health scare.

I'm on your side
Through thick and thin and any line
We'll cross divides, and we will stand in hope and light
But if you ain't alright, just remember
I'm on your side

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night SweatsAAABatteriesYou Worry Me

I'm shocked that this didn't end up top 5. Once we reached the top 12 you could almost shuffle them in any order but this one I thought for sure would make top 5 when I started this exercise. It's just outstanding - I believe Rateliff has said this was written when he was still married to his wife (now ex-wife) during his travels on the road and during his alcoholism.

Were you up all night afraid of what the future might bring?

#8 Flowerin’ (off Native Heart, 2017)

I ain't worried 'bout what Jesus may be
Thinkin' of my soul
I'm barefoot on a silver string
My faith is rock 'n' roll
Some say our paths may intersect
Some say he walks beside me
Though I 'preciate that kindly, sir
Still, I miss David Bowie

(Fan Video done in Lego. No, really.) Flowerin’ by Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers

That’s guests Jon Villa (aka The Jon’s) and Javier Games on Trumpet. Also be on alert for a break from the song’s regular format (as much as "regular" applies here) when Clyne sings “I feel the people fill the darkness up with silly love songs” in the style of, well, “Silly Love Songs” by Wings.

And I’ve lost krista4…

Why I chose this:
Tastes vary, and honestly I have no idea what the general reception to this list is. That said, if this song doesn’t get you moving at least a little, you might want to check your pulse. This one’s been particularly catchy for me, as you might expect of something in the Top 10. It’s “simply” a song to improve your mood, with a bit of that appreciation for life I’ve mentioned a few times, including for #9 Hello New Day.

There’s a couple of genres at play here past the “usual”, including roots rock (Rusted Root perhaps specifically). Then again, I’ve already mentioned Bowie and Wings/Beatles in this writeup. So it’s not like the band doesn’t already show its influences and inspirations on its proverbial sleeves.

Speaking of influences, for #7 I’ll mention Bob Marley again. See you then!
