Marshawn Lynch vs. Adrian Peterson (1 Viewer)

I've heard many people mention that AD will share carries (maybe 50/50) with Chester. In the last preseason game, AD got the start and was only lifted for Chester a few times. It seemed more like a 75/25 split. Is that a sign of things to come (i.e. AD is the starter and gets the bulk of carries) in the regular season, or do you think the Vikes were just trying to get a read on Peterson?

I'm buying that the model we saw in the last game will be the model we see in the regular season...obviously the 3rd preseason game should give us a better idea.
No. Chester Taylor started. http://www.nfl.com/liveupdate/gamecenter/2...YJ_Gamebook.pdf

But they threw 3 passes and punted. Second series Peterson came in.

Peterson did get a bigger load, but Taylor doesnt need so much preseason game time.

They were the two backs who played all the way to the end of the first half. A rbbc thus far. Could change though.
Granted Chester started, but you are just kidding yourself if you think that he will perform equally to or greater than Peterson in 2007. By the end of the year Chester will be lucky if he has totaled 35% of the carries barring injury. More than likely it will be 60/40 Peterson the first three weeks or so before becoming a 75/25 split in carries. Chester may beinvolved in 3rd downs more than Adrian but the carries will probably end up 70/30 at season's end.
Im not kidding myself about anything.Chester started, I just put forth the correct info, that's all.

It could be a token gesture.

BTW: the guy I quoted stated

"I'm buying that the model we saw in the last game will be the model we see in the regular season" - that model has Taylor starting.

I think you misunderstood me. I have no doubt that Chester Taylor started the game, I watched it myself. What I meant to say is that I would be extremely suprised if Peterson did not get a 60/40 split to begin the season and ultimately see a 70/30 or 75/25 split later in the year barring injury.

Adrian Peterson.End of discussion.
It is insightful posts like these that keep me glued to the Shark Pool all season long.
BroadwayG - why all the cheap shots man?I like Lynch a lot but Peterson could be the real deal as soon as this year. Many are thinking that Lynch is in a better situation in Buffalo, but i have to say that i do not agree. It looked this way before when Jauron declared his commitment to a back by commitee. Now he is only looking at 50% of carries. Meanwhile, CHildress and the Vikes have been silent as to the RB's roles and Peterson has been getting a lot of work. And looked good too.

In 2 keeper drafts I am having BOTH are being over valued. They are going in spots where proven starters are going. Passing on guys who have full time gigs. Looks like I won't be touching them...

in a 14 team redraft league, is Adrian Peterson worth pick 2.12? We are implementing the banzai method this year, so I won't pick again until 3.12 and 4.03 etc. I am not sure I want to risk him being there at 40th overall if I want him this season.

In the same league size and keeper league he went 1.5.. So I would say yes..

I was on a Vike's message board and the few homers who did respond to my inquiry all seem to think that the carries are going to be close to 50/50 (a slight 55/45 advantage to AP) and that Taylor will be used all season long unless he looks bad and AP looks like Superman.

This might have me leaning toward Lynch even though I wanted AP.

Taylor isn't going to be reduced to being a waterboy. The man is a legit NFL player who had a pretty decent year last year. A good OC will find a way to use his talents effectively. That being said, I think that Peterson will be the year's version of a rookie Clinton Portis. He will be used more earlier than Portis was...but I think that Minn. is going to come to the conclusion real quick that this guy is the real deal and they stand a better chance of winning if he is the main cog in this O. Which I think is good. Let AD share time and carries at the beginning of the year so he isn't spent come FF playoff time.

 I treat this place like a locker room or a sports bar. Occasionally, I run into some people who think of it as a knitting circle or an Oprah Book of the Month reading club. Yeah, I sometimes use some alternative methods to spark some logical responses. Sorry if I offend.

I don't like either for redraft purposes.

1. I just don't buy into all of the rookie hype.

2. I don't believe either offense allows for too much 'upside' as far as production goes.

3. Both are on teams with a solid veteran incumbent.

Dynasty, on the other hand is a different story.
I see the first two points, but I just don't know if I buy #3 anymore. Look at last year's rookies and their respective incumbents:Bush -> McCallister

Jones-Drew -> Taylor

Addai -> Rhodes

Maroney -> Dillon

Williams -> Foster

Each one of these guys has an established incumbent, and each was a legitimate fantasy starter. I don't have the data to argue that they all outperformed their ADP, but I would guess that all but Bush did (and I bet even he did in PPR).

Chester Taylor and Anthony Thomas are not any more solid than any of the incumbents last year.
Fair enough. What were their ADPs? Outside of Bush, 6th-7th? I can't remember offhand where Maroney was going last year. MJD was wayyyy down there.

Something else to take into account would be touch % between rookie and incumbent. None of them pushed the vet completely out of the picture.

We're talking 3rd round for either of these guys this year. There just seems to be an awfully high element of risk with both of these guys considering point #2.

I'm by no means an expert, but I've watched Taylor and he is nothing special. He was a backup before and he will be a backup again. he was given an opportunity and did what he could, but it wasn't much. He was a product of the system last year. His stats would have been the same for any below average runningback in the nfl last year. Here is what I posted in the other AD thread, go look for yourself and don't just look at the stat line... unless you are in my league then go ahead and pick up Taylor in the 3rd because he is the starter and had 300+ touches last year."FROM other AD thread" I'll be the first to admit I have a serious man crush on AD this year. He will be fun to watch as he always goes 110%. I took him in the 4th rd Saturday and considered taking him in the second. I hope to get him in all 3 of my leagues. AD will get the goal line carries. Taylor may get 2-3 all season. If you're a subcriber checkout Taylors game summaries from last season... He had serious goal line issues and fumbled a few tds away. Childress must be a nice guy, because I would have benched his ### for fumbles losing the game against the bears, the dolphins and he had a big fumble or 2 against AZ. Not that AD will be immune to mistakes, but his 5 yard run (right after the 43yarder) was the more impressive run friday night to me. I hope the guys in my other leagues feel the same way some of you do about him so he can fall to me in the 3rd and 4th rds.

Was that the legendary Minnesota running game juggernaut a la Atlanta and Denver?Taylor did extremely well last year considering the QB swaps and general lacklusterness of the offense.

Not at all to be compared to Denver. Atlanta was an anomilly IMO. Take Vick away and they become more predictable, but Childress was committed to the run and the Vikes had a solid O-Line. Yes, Johnson was imo the worst qb in the league I think T. Jackson could be the worst qb this year and he would still be a major upgrade. Taylor got an incredible amount of touches. You can rack up stats because you get the ball enough and have a good line (Taylor last year & Maybe Benson this year). Or you can make your touches count (Jones-Drew last year). Peterson will make his touches count. That spin move he hit Friday night... that wasn't the first spin move he hit in a game. That would have been a 5 yard gain tops for Taylor.

From Center to LT (Birk, Hutchinson, McKinnie) there is no better run-blocking line in the NFL then Minnesota.

There is a lot of people here who are really getting blinded by the sexy rookie in this thread. I'm not trying to pick on you particularly too much, but...I agree, Taylor was a product of the system - and it wasn't a very good one. Sure, the OL was solid, but the Vikings had no passing game to speak of. Taylor was literally the only legitimate threat on the offense, and the running game was really all defenses had to concern themselves with. His results were mixed, to be certain. Was it really his fault? No. What happens when you add a better passing game? Taylor's #s would substantially improve.

If you want another example of almost an identical phenomenon, look at Thomas Jones.

[code=

Why the big difference between 2004 and 2005? Sure, he missed an extra game in 04, but his rushing stats improved across the board. The answer is a new OC and a QB who could at least threaten to throw the ball deep. In 2004, Thomas Jones was 100% of the focus of opposing defenses. After Rex tore his ACL in 2004, the Bears had possibly the most putrid QBs ever to see NFL playing time take over. None of those guys are even on an NFL roster at this point - Jonathan Quinn, Craig Krenzel, Chad Hutchinson. Terrible. In 2005, the Bears had Orton and later Grossman, and while Orton is not great, he could at least occasionally complete some passes and Turner found ways to take the pressure off TJ. He turns in a pretty solid season of 1335 yards and considerably higher ypc, even while sharing a few carries with Cedric Benson.

Taylor in 06 was faced with what Jones saw in 04: 8-9 man fronts, and every defender keying on him. With a better passing game, Taylor would be far more effective. The Vikings staff know this, and that's why everything out of Minnesota suggest they plan on splitting time about 50/50 for the entire season. I don't have Taylor in anything or particularly like him, but you shouldn't be seduced by Peterson's potential. Taylor is a solid if unspectacular NFL starting RB. He really is quite a bit like Thomas Jones, not just in terms of situation, but also in terms of ability and talent level. That's what you should expect from Taylor, and that's not the kind of guy you quickly phase out just because you've got a talented rookie with a nice spin move. He's not sexy, but he's very valuable, particularly in this situation.

Why?

The fact that Taylor is more than serviceable, that the Vikings clearly aren't contending this year at all, and that Peterson has had some injury issues in the past should lead you to believe that they would be pretty foolish to let Peterson carry the load for them this year at any point. It just makes far more sense to split this year, and expect Peterson to take over in 08, when the Vikings would presumably have a more mature passing game, defense, and much more realistic shot at the post season. They limit the risk of injury to Peterson, allow him to learn the ropes and becomes comfortable at the NFL level, use Taylor to eat up some of the mileage, and focus their efforts on 08.

So, I don't know: if you think that splitting 50/50 for the season will be more than enough for you at Peterson's current ADP or wherever you're considering him, than by all means, draft him. But if your drafting him relies on the hope of him taking all or most of the carries at any point this season, especially early... I'd definitely pass.

AD is the real deal. I think Lynch is going to by more JJ Arrington than Marshall Faulk.
Can we please stop with the jj arrington comments?
One year they'll be right.I mean, wasn't Addai suposed to be JJ Arrington last year? But he ended up being the leading rusher among rookies.Maybe Lynh will this year. However, Peterson is the greater talent, and MIN looks like they'll run it a ton. My only concern with him is health.

I'm more or less on your side Snoop. I just don't see them throwing Taylor to the trash pile. You use what you have. Last year Taylor was the best playmaker on the Vikes team. This year...he's the second best behind AD.

Peterson will be the feature back by week 3 at the latest. Write it down.

While I'm not going to pecil the Vikes in as a contender this year. I think you have to look at them as having a fair shot at the NFC north. They have 7-9 games on their schedule that look very winnable. I know the Bears are in their division, but I'm taking the Vikes D over the Bears O. Speaking of Chester Taylor he had 173 yards on 37 carries in 2 games against the Bears last year. The Bears games could be a split. 9 or 10 wins could take that division. Not that these coaches are willing to risk injury to their franchise player... I don't believe they will keep there best playmaker on the bench half the game. NFL owners are fickle, its always about winning now. You see coaches get fired just about every year.

If they aren't thinking long term, then they aren't thinking. They're going to get use Taylor as much as they can while still keeping Peterson involved, because Taylor isn't a part of their long term plans while Peterson IS their long term plans.

Giving Peterson the bulk wouldn't be very good for his development or for the Vikings THIS year, let alone the future. They're still going to be facing a fairly stacked line, and running Peterson into the meat grinder 25 times a game isn't going to lead to huge results right away and will only risky injury and frustration. If he's part of a RBBC where Peterson is seen more of a change of pace, he's going to have more success and rip off some legit runs. Taylor's going to be there to get the ugly yards, and Peterson is going to get the chance to look good. Do not expect Peterson to get significant majority over Taylor at any point.

Chester a playmaker? :unsure:Wasn't it SPECIFICALLY Chester's utter lack of playmaking ability that was often cited in Minnesota this offseason as the biggest reason for grabbing AD?

Come on guys, did we all forget about the O-line in Buffalo?

An 18 wheeler would only get 3.2 yards per carry running behind those Bozo's!

ADP is and will be superior to Lynch!!!

I think the only aspect Lynch lacks in comparison to AD is the breakaway speed. I think Lynch is a little better at moving laterally, and I see him in the same mold as an LT or Terrell Davis in that he is able to make those quick lateral cuts to avoid tackles. AD reminds me of a Bo Jackson type freak athlete but maybe not the better football player. While Peterson may have a higher ceiling, i think to dismiss Lynch this early is crazy. He has a pretty high ceiling of his own. I would not be shocked if Lynch had the better career in the least.

I'm more or less on your side Snoop. I just don't see them throwing Taylor to the trash pile. You use what you have. Last year Taylor was the best playmaker on the Vikes team. This year...he's the second best behind AD.
Chester a playmaker? :goodposting:Wasn't it SPECIFICALLY Chester's utter lack of playmaking ability that was often cited in Minnesota this offseason as the biggest reason for grabbing AD?
So he wasn't the best playmaker on the Vikes last year? He's not the second best on the Vikes this year? You insult Minnesota...not Chester.

I really hope you aren't serious? AP not the better football player? That guy is nothing but a pure running back. He has every component of a RB skillset and then some and it translates better on the field than just about any starting RB in the NFL right now.

One of these guys will be sharing the backfield with a guy named Chester Taylor, who had 1216 rushing yards, 288 receiving yards and 6 TDs last year.
Sharing?......yeah, probably 75/25 or 80/20.....This guy (Chester) did so well that the Vikings did what.....drafted a RB at #7. It's time to realize folks, Chestter is pedestrian and actually should have had close to 1500 rush yds and 11 TDs with the great blocking he received last season........superstar talent in AD relegates Chester to non-factor upon arrival of the chosen one.....That said, I believe Lynch is the real deal, a very versatile RB who will be more thurman thomas than Faulk, but that's still very good if you ask me.......in redrafts, I think it's pretty much a toss up this year

I don't have any stake in the MIN backfield. Heck I'm a Bears fan and a Benson owner, but gee whiz do you really think that the Vikings taking the best player available at #7 (a RB that some experts say is a once in a decade talent) really means that Chester Taylor was the suck last year? You even quoted a PittUnited post showing over 1500yds of production for this 'pedestrian' RB named Chester Taylor. Did you ignore the fact that Minnesota ran just about the most one dimensional offense in the NFL last year? I don't get it. Why can't this just be a simple case of a team taking the best player available when a great talent falls to them?

Yeah it's not like Peterson has done anything at Oklahoma to prove that he is a good football player.

Ah, thanks for that...I had looked at the play-by-play and saw that AD got the first carry. Appreciate the correction. :goodposting:

I don't think they drafted Peterson 7th overall because they think Taylor is not good enough. I think it is because they think Peterson is one of those once in a decade game changing talents. He was just too good to pass up.

They are correct.
Like Reggie Bush last year and Calvin Johnson this year?

Fact is, AD & Bush are the best RB prospects to enter the league in a decade. It's just coincidence that they came back-to-back.I don't own AD in any leagues (none of my teams stunk last year). I think he is going to set the world on fire this year. I would not be at all surprised to see him finish in the top 10 and be drafted in the dynasty top 3 next year. Amazing workhorse talent running behind a great OL.

While Destro's resource conservation theory is interesting in reference to the Chester AD carry distribution, I do not think coaches think like this when they are trying to get 1st downs.

Tomlinson would argue with that.Actually, no he wouldn't, everyone else would for him.

Tomlinson was not considered a sure thing prospect coming out of college. He did not play in a pro offense at TCU, who ran a Veer type of offense. There were some questions whether he could make the transition.

9 carries for 9 yards for Lynch against the Titans. This should quiet the AD-Lynch talk...
Naturally. I suppose I should bump Lendale White up to the first round on that logic...
Maybe you should bump Lynch down because his O-line is the worst in the NFL, AGAIN. I bought into the idea the Bills spent a bunch of money to beef up that line and I traded for Lynch, what a mistake that was, There was nothing wrong with McGahee in Buffalo, it was his line, I watched every Bills game for the past 2 years and their line straight up sucked and it still does. :scared:

I don't understand why it's assumed that Lynch is in a better situation. He plays for a terrible team that will probably use some RBBC too. I would argue that Lynch is actually in a worse situation than AD. Lynch is on a sucky team, in a tougher division, with a terrible head coach. AD is also more talented than Lynch. No GM would have drafted Lynch over Peterson in the real NFL draft. In conclusion, there is really no solid reason for you to draft Lynch over Peterson in your fantasy draft either.

I did a 12 team redraft league last Saturday. AD was there when I picked at 5.2 and I wish I had taken him. I decided to go WR and hope for him to continue to slide. He went with the next pick. I ended up with Lynch at 6.11, so I was interested in reading this thread to see what others thought. I hope the Lynch supporters are right, but I wish I had taken Peterson in the 5th! After his game last week, he seems to be going earlier now...
