Taylor isn't going to be reduced to being a waterboy. The man is a legit NFL player who had a pretty decent year last year. A good OC will find a way to use his talents effectively. That being said, I think that Peterson will be the year's version of a rookie Clinton Portis. He will be used more earlier than Portis was...but I think that Minn. is going to come to the conclusion real quick that this guy is the real deal and they stand a better chance of winning if he is the main cog in this O. Which I think is good. Let AD share time and carries at the beginning of the year so he isn't spent come FF playoff time.
I'm by no means an expert, but I've watched Taylor and he is nothing special. He was a backup before and he will be a backup again. he was given an opportunity and did what he could, but it wasn't much.
He was a product of the system last year. His stats would have been the same for any below average runningback in the nfl last year. Here is what I posted in the other AD thread, go look for yourself and don't just look at the stat line... unless you are in my league then go ahead and pick up Taylor in the 3rd because he is the starter and had 300+ touches last year."FROM other AD thread"
I'll be the first to admit I have a serious man crush on AD this year. He will be fun to watch as he always goes 110%. I took him in the 4th rd Saturday and considered taking him in the second. I hope to get him in all 3 of my leagues.
AD will get the goal line carries. Taylor may get 2-3 all season. If you're a subcriber checkout Taylors game summaries from last season... He had serious goal line issues and fumbled a few tds away. Childress must be a nice guy, because I would have benched his ### for fumbles losing the game against the bears, the dolphins and he had a big fumble or 2 against AZ. Not that AD will be immune to mistakes, but his 5 yard run (right after the 43yarder) was the more impressive run friday night to me. I hope the guys in my other leagues feel the same way some of you do about him so he can fall to me in the 3rd and 4th rds.
There is a lot of people here who are really getting blinded by the sexy rookie in this thread. I'm not trying to pick on you particularly too much, but...I agree, Taylor was a product of the system - and it wasn't a very good one. Sure, the OL was solid, but the Vikings had no passing game to speak of. Taylor was literally the only legitimate threat on the offense, and the running game was really all defenses had to concern themselves with. His results were mixed, to be certain. Was it really his fault? No. What happens when you add a better passing game? Taylor's #s would substantially improve.
If you want another example of almost an identical phenomenon, look at Thomas Jones.
[code=
Why the big difference between 2004 and 2005? Sure, he missed an extra game in 04, but his rushing stats improved across the board. The answer is a new OC and a QB who could at least threaten to throw the ball deep. In 2004, Thomas Jones was 100% of the focus of opposing defenses. After Rex tore his ACL in 2004, the Bears had possibly the most putrid QBs ever to see NFL playing time take over. None of those guys are even on an NFL roster at this point - Jonathan Quinn, Craig Krenzel, Chad Hutchinson. Terrible. In 2005, the Bears had Orton and later Grossman, and while Orton is not great, he could at least occasionally complete some passes and Turner found ways to take the pressure off TJ. He turns in a pretty solid season of 1335 yards and considerably higher ypc, even while sharing a few carries with Cedric Benson.
Taylor in 06 was faced with what Jones saw in 04: 8-9 man fronts, and every defender keying on him. With a better passing game, Taylor would be far more effective. The Vikings staff know this, and that's why everything out of Minnesota suggest they plan on splitting time about 50/50 for the entire season. I don't have Taylor in anything or particularly like him, but you shouldn't be seduced by Peterson's potential. Taylor is a solid if unspectacular NFL starting RB. He really is quite a bit like Thomas Jones, not just in terms of situation, but also in terms of ability and talent level. That's what you should expect from Taylor, and that's not the kind of guy you quickly phase out just because you've got a talented rookie with a nice spin move. He's not sexy, but he's very valuable, particularly in this situation.
Why?
The fact that Taylor is more than serviceable, that the Vikings clearly aren't contending this year at all, and that Peterson has had some injury issues in the past should lead you to believe that they would be pretty foolish to let Peterson carry the load for them this year at any point. It just makes far more sense to split this year, and expect Peterson to take over in 08, when the Vikings would presumably have a more mature passing game, defense, and much more realistic shot at the post season. They limit the risk of injury to Peterson, allow him to learn the ropes and becomes comfortable at the NFL level, use Taylor to eat up some of the mileage, and focus their efforts on 08.
So, I don't know: if you think that splitting 50/50 for the season will be more than enough for you at Peterson's current ADP or wherever you're considering him, than by all means, draft him. But if your drafting him relies on the hope of him taking all or most of the carries at any point this season, especially early... I'd definitely pass.
