I agree and I think this is a great marriage for both teams. I think Marinelli and Martz has this team in the playoffs this year.

orlovsky was more highly regarded than ryan fitzpatrick, & fitz showed some promise late in the season...i'm guessing there will be some pressure to, if not win, at least be competitive right away... which might not make an inexperienced guy coming off his rookie season a good fit... of course, if he looks better in mini-camps, training camp & pre-season, all bets could be off.

martz is a bit of a gambler & has a lot of confidence in his ability to coach guys up... though he may have input, i'm guessing it is marinelli's call... though lots of DET homers are down on harrington (for good reason), to the point of becoming completely exasperated & giving up on him... lets not underestimate martz'a ability to coach up guys...

though harrington may be damaged goods, maybe not irreparably so... maybe he can be stripped down, overhauled & retooled, to use mo-town terms...

warner & bulger weren't exactly household names before martz wielded his golden touch on them.

As a Lions fan, I'm happy with this signing. I was a bit jaded when he turned down the job due to $$ demands, and laughed when it was reported he clamored back to try and get the job. But overall, I think he was a good OC, not a good HC. Hopefully he can rebuild that offense that is full of talent, but leaderless and in disarray...

I'm not certain that Joey Harrington slots in well under Mike Martz's offensive system that relies on accuracy but the one player I see excelling no matter who is chucking the rock is Roy Williams who should rise to the top-tier of the receiver position under Martz. Expect to see Williams erupt with a big 2006 season and especially so if one of the other talented receivers can make an impact beside him.

This is a big signing for the Lions as Martz cannot help but improve the sorry state of affairs that was the Lions offensive attack over the past few seasons.

I don't know if it can actually fall lower after his pathetic performance this past season. I do agree though that Martz hardly gets the most out of his running backs and especially so when they do not excel in the receiving game. Kevin Jones should definitely be ranked outside of the top fifteen in 2006.

The Lions sure seem to always do things in an interesting way. Hire a broadcaster as GM. Draft WRs in the first round every year. Playing a shell game with the public on Martz - and he's just the OC. I see them as a franchise giving an effort but not always getting it just right, and I can't fault them for that. i wouldn't want to compare KJ to faulk, though... also, a lot of those numbers were via passing game, & i don't think KJ has anywhere close to faulk's WR-like hands...

steven jackson maybe a better comparison (they carried similar grades & went at similar spots in 2004 draft)... jax bigger & stronger, but KJ could hypothetically compensate or better with superior speed & elusiveness...

jackson was #11 among RBs last season (FBG scoring)... that was with bulger playing like 7 games & the coaching staff & OL being in disarray...

imo, better that #15 is possible if things break right... but that could depend on a lot of factors... the OL... the defense (rams certainly didn't have a very good defense)... is the RBBC gone with old coaching regime?

An underachieving offense gets an OC who's been very successful, creative and entertaining for the fans. This is a good hire all the way around. The system will improve - the question is what players will be in the system and benefit. I agree with Smitty that Roy Williams is the #1 benefactor. Williams and Rogers, who knows? Havent we been saying that about Harrington for a couple of years now? I think Martz is just what he needs though. He may end up living up to his potential now. If they existed, I would also reference the "Lions hire Bobby Ross", "Lions acquire Pat Swilling", "Lions win the Scott Mitchell sweepstakes" and "Lions sign Damian Woody" threads.I'm only saying, it's the Lions, and just when you think they're turning the corner and when they've made what's seen as a positive move, something backfires. Essentially, history indicates it's as close to a sure thing of not working as you can get.

i think being a first time head coach Marinelli (sp?), will allow Martz a little bit of leeway there to make his moves.

I wouldnt be surprised to see Martz bring in a QB that nobody else seems to like (see Trent Green Kurt Warner Marc Bulger) and turn him into something

This is somewhat reassuring. I'm skeptical about Martz as the Lions' OC. I fear he has an outsized personality for a subordinate role, and I was expecting to hear of clashes between him and Marinelli if he got the job. If he defers to the head coach and concentrates on developing his offensive weapons instead of glorifying himself, this could be a beneficial move for the team as a whole.I'm still not sold, though. What were the whispers coming out of St. Louis about? I thought I heard about Martz aggravating the Rams management with things he said or did. Was there any fire behind the smoke signals?

Mike's a guy that has to show me first (as with a lot of Lions). But PFW said that Mike Williams was one of the first guys Marinelli talked with after taking the Lion gig. The rumor is that Marinelli believes he can make Mike "go" and that he can be a starter next year.Hey, Marinelli didn't contact Joey...but he immediately called Mike Williams.

I want to know what people think of BMW

I have participated and been to hundreds of football games...high school; college and professional. I have seen hundreds of players warm-up and prepare. I caught Williams' act at two Lions games, v. Cowobys & v. Saints, this season. My immediate thought...I have never seen a player half ### pregame or the game itself like he did. It was laughable. This coming from a life long Lions fan and BMW dynasty owner. Marinelli has his hands full with that one. It is still early enough to get the kid on track but seriously, Willliams, grow up. Marinelli needs to remind Williams he is roughly 2-3 years removed from his days at USC; set down the press clippings and get into the film/weight room; start taking better care of his diet/body and learn what an alarm clock and or watch is and how to use it. Perception being reality...Williams needs a biblical, end of the world, apocalyptic sized fire lit under his ### and a person like Marinelli stoking it constantly. As far as Martz, I love the hire. Very mutually exclusive arrangement that should serve both Martz and the team well.
