Middle-aged Dummies are back and bursting at the "themes" to get going! Full theme ahead! (3 Viewers)

List submitted with only a smidge of technical difficulties.

As for @titusbramble 's question as to "what is Manchester," probably would have been better off following Krista's lead with Chicagoland and gone with "Greater Manchester." Should have known better considering that during my time in Philly, all the locals would get up in arms every time Kobe Bryant was referred to as a Philadelphian - "He went to Lower Merion High School!!!" (3 miles over the city line).

Anyway, my criteria:

1) Started with bands/artists that I remember reading about in NME or Q as being from Manchester.

2) Checked Wikipedia and actually the only band that I had to drop was the Charlatans, most of whom were from Birmingham, despite being closely associated with the Madchester scene.

3) Just because someone was born in Manchester doesn't qualify them for my list. For example, the Bee Gees all lived in Manchester till they were 6-9 years old, but mainly grew up in Australia. Verdict: Mancunian by birth but not qualified for the list.

4) The suburbs count. Stockport. Salford. In one case, even as far out as Oldham.

5) College counts. Nobody in REM was from Athens, GA. Same with Kate and Fred from the B-52s. They all met there during or right after college and formed a band. Anybody gonna argue they're not Athens bands?

How about a dirty Santa theme next Christmas. Everyone throws a theme into the hat and we draw ... and however that game plays out.

Edit: sorry, buzz

Sorry, way behind here. I'd be happy to host a second round (especially because there's little chance I'm getting a list done in time for this round). But I also kind of like this evil idea, maybe for another one.

Overwhelmed by cats? Wish things were calmer for you.

I mean I honestly don't give a crap, it's your theme, but nobody in Stockport would describe themselves as being from a "suburb of Manchester", and would describe their county as Cheshire, not the artificial construct that is Greater Manchester. We live in a weird area where there is one city centre where next to nobody lives, then have several large towns surrounding it that are all self-defining, smaller villages between any two can fight amongst themselves. We'll keep the Heatons and you can have Longsight. Best wishes from your local Stopfordian.

Also list in

I'm going with a First 6 out for reasons.

I didn't want any repeats. so the first four will appear as part of other groups in the 31.

Morrissey - First of the Gang to Die Oh Mozz, what's become of ye. Still, "You have never been in love till you've seen the sunlight thrown over smashed human bones" is so on-the-nose Morrissey that no one else could have written it.

808 State - Cubik Noel Gallagher said something to the effect of "You walk into the Hacienda and think 'this music is pure ****e.' Then you pop an E and the next thing you know, it's like hearing the Beatles for the first time." I've never been to the Hacienda, taken E, or been much into techno, but 808 State released some pretty solid stuff in the late 80s/early 90s.

Swing Out Sister - Break Out Didn't know that 2/3 of Swing Out Sister were Mancs until I did my post-punk countdown a few years back. The two dudes in the group met singer Corinne Drewery at Factory Records and next thing you know, Breakout hits #4 on the UK Charts and #6 on the US Hot 100.

Getting Away With It - Electronic Does it get any more Manchester than Bernard Sumner and Johnny Marr?

The next two just missed the cut.

The Mock Turtles - Can You Dig It? Some classic early 90s UK Indie right here.

Herman's Hermits - Henry the VIII, I Am I just couldn't include Herman's Hermits given that I didn't know they were from Manchester until my Wiki review. Probably better songs for them, but this always made me smile.

Will this fit in one post? We shall see.

Unfortunately , I think I’m going to have to bail on this one. Just started my list about a week ago and was hoping to get to it this weekend, but will be tied up and it’s going to be a very busy work week.

Will be around to chime in when it gets started though.

Next Sat the 25th is the deadline - won’t make it.
:scared:

I better get after it.

Testing youtube links. Something I heard today

We can postpone a little if it would help the procrastinators, but only if you would actually then get them in.

I appreciate it, but don’t want to overpromise and under deliver. That’s for work, not important stuff like music drafts. Will just sit this one out.

I know I said I wasnt, but here goes

Last 5 Out - Songs in D Minor - The Saddest Key of All

36 - Gotye - Somebody that I Used to Know

Source - https://singingcarrots.com/song?song=gotye-somebody-that-i-used-to-know

Sadness Quotient - 8 out of 11
Lyrically downbeat, but a bit too happy with the music

35 - Sam Smith - Too Good at Goodbyes

Source - https://singingcarrots.com/song?song=sam-smith-too-good-at-goodbyes

Sadness Quotient - 10.5/11
Cheer up Sam, it might not happen. Misery guts Mozza has competition

34 - Beyonce - Crazy in Love

Source - https://musicstax.com/track/crazy-in-love/0TwBtDAWpkpM3srywFVOV5

Sadness Quotient - 2/11
Not sure where the sadness is here? May a guy like Jay Z ending up with Beyonce and then cheating on her?

33 - Alice Cooper - Poison

Source - https://musicstax.com/track/poison/39J10NL0mFTAdJbapoo2rC

Sadness Quotient - 6.5/11
Singing about his alcoholism gets the sadness quotient up. Wrapping it up in 80s rock does not.

32 - George Michael - Careless Whisper

Source - https://tunebat.com/Info/Careless-Whisper-George-Michael/6KsgCYcZKPcBRDNGhiZWRR

Sadness Quotient - 11/11
Poor George. Fame, looks, money and he still couldnt be happy. The haunting sax opening and lyrics about betrayal, parental neglect and general unworthiness get this one all the way up to 11.

Let the top 31 prepare for battle.

For those posting first 5 outs and other things related to your lists, it would be helpful if you would open by stating your theme, since we all (I) haven't memorized them all, and unfamiliar material doesn't necessarily jog the memory.
I thought it would be a fun game for people to post their last five out and then we all have to guess the theme - like Carnac the Magnificent.

Envelope to head - “Gotye, Beyoncé, Sam Smith, Alice Cooper, and George Michael”

Opens envelope - “Who are singers with songs in the saddest key of all?”

It’ll be interesting listening to the 1-31 playlists and trying to remember what songs relate to what theme. I have a hard enough time when it’s just the same artists every round.

34 - Beyonce - Crazy in Love

Sadness Quotient - 2/11
Not sure where the sadness is here? May a guy like Jay Z ending up with Beyonce and then cheating on her?

Oh crap, there's another Single (Named) Lady that slipped my mind

Wait, you skipped the one-named superstar who has a famous song called “Single Ladies”????

I'm trying to build suspense

My list isn’t complete but I may as well state the topic, which some of you may not like…. but I promise it won’t be too lengthy:

Named after places, specific (ie Panama) or vague (ie room or lake)…. only they’re all instrumental.

*Spicoli on*

Dude, it would have been so radical if “Panama” had a ripping guitar solo and spoken word interlude

*Spicoli off*

Love the idea. Get back to corporate and we’ll see if we can’t get Mr. Big to give it the go-ahead.

Yeah we’re runnin’ a little bit hot tonight
(Vroom)
I can barely see the road from the heat coming on
(Vroom)
Reach down between my legs and
Ease the seat back . . .

Last 5 Out - Batman - Songs inspired by, mentioning or on the soundtrack of a film or video game bearing the caped crusaders name

36 - David Bowie - Uncle Arthur

Relevant lyric -
Uncle Arthur likes his mommy
Uncle Arthur still reads comics
Uncle Arthur follows Batman

Batman Vibe Score - 1/10
A song about a 32yo mummys boy who loves Batman.

Quick Hit comment - This song was Track One, Side one of his debut album. However great he became. It wasnt evident here. Atrocious.
Bloody McCartney cant even get a unique track name like Uncle Arthur to himself. He had to copy a Bowie title.

35 - The Scaffold - Goodbat Nightman

Relevant Lyric -
Robin:)
Be -be -batman..

(Batman:)
Yes Robin?

(Robin:)
Was there ever a Batwoman?

(Batman:)
There was once, boy wonder, a long time back

(Robin:)
Where is she now?

(Batman:)
I'm afraid she's no longer with us...

(Robin:)
Oh...you mean...?

(Batman:)
Yes, she up there in the great balthory up there in the sky...

(Robin:)
Holy sti-batwoman...what happened?

Batman:)
She rather foolishly got in the way of the Batmobile

(Robin:)
Suicide?

(Batman:)
Batricide...

(Robin:)
Gosh, why didn't I think of that?

Batman Vibe Score - 9/10
This is ****ing weird.

Quick Hit comment - McCartney again. This time his brother.

34 - Black Grape - Kelly’s Heroes

Relevant Lyric -
Don't talk to me about heroes
Most of these men sink like subs
Jesus was a black man
No, Jesus was Batman (no, no, no, no, not at all)
That was Bruce Wayne

Batman Vibe Score - 4/10
More about societies fetishism about celebrities was way ahead of its time. Batman is a side character here

Quick Hit Comment - This song went top 20 in the UK and was Happy Mondays frontman Shaun Ryders next project

33 - Billy Idol - Summer Running

Relevant Lyric -
I can escape
I've got batmans cape
And I can cover myself, and baby
Yes I'm flying
I'm flying

Batman Vibe Score - 2/10
Really just a passing comment.

Quick Hit Comment -
Latter day Idol isn’t as fierce as 80s Idol.

32 - Prince - Partyman

Relevant Lyric -
All hail, the new king in town
Young and old, gather 'round, yeah
Black and white, red and green (yeah, yeah, yeah)
(Oh yeah) the funkiest man, you've ever seen

Batman Vibe Score - 5/10
Featured in the Tim Burton movie and Prince himself wears a half Batman, half Joker makeup.

Quick Hit Comment -
I could have included about 5 songs from Prince in the list, but that is overkill. I finalized it at 2. And this one, which would be in the top 31 all things being equal.

32 - George Michael - Careless Whisper

Dude
Do you not think this is a sad song?
It fits the criteria of being in D Minor
And it ranked 32, not #1

If you have the image of pop star George Michael Waking you up before you go go or shaking his arse on Faith, you have the wrong image. Post Faith he was a very sad and depressing artist. And better. Listen Without Prejudice

I’ve been to many concerts since the time I was a kid and I’m still going strong as an old man. While recent shows have had me paying more attention to the drums in recent years, the lead guitar has always been the focus of my live concert events. It’s the instrument that is the embodiment of rock and roll, and all the variants thereof.

I can play a few chords on guitar quite poorly, but I am fascinated by the instrument and those that have shared their gifts on it. I’m not so much into the technical aspects and the flashy type players. I am drawn to the more emotive and improvisational style of play. So you should expect a lot of players from the blues and jam-band genre who play with more emotion imo. That’s not to say we won’t see any heavy-metal guitar gods or classic rock and rollers but expect more “feel” than “style”.

The way I did my “rankings” of the top guitarists that I have seen live were based on the following breakdown:

50% - my live experience(s)

25%- live recordings

25% - reputation (to add a small objective element)

I am sure I am forgetting someone as I try to rack my brain and figure out just who I’ve seen - my early years after college are sort of a blur.

The following guitarist received consideration but did not make the final cut (or even the last five out):

  • Jim Babjak (The Smithereens)
  • The Edge (U2)
  • Michael Houser/George McConnell (Widespread Panic)
  • Jimmy Vaughn (Fabolous Thunderbirds)
  • Trevor Rabin (Yes)
  • Bruce Springsteen/Nils Lofgren (The E Street Band)
  • Waddy Wachtel (Keith Richards and the XPensive Winos)
  • G Love (G Love and the Special Sauce)
  • Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains)
  • Mark Diomonde (Solar Circus / Juggling Suns)
  • Ty Taybor (Kings X)
  • Bobby Steele (The Undead)
  • Tim Farris (INXS)
  • George Lynch (Dokken)
  • Duane Betts (Oteil and Friends / Allman Betts Band)
  • Andy Fairweather-Low (Roger Waters Radio K.A.O.S. tour)
  • Curt Kirwood (Meat Puppets)
  • Patterson Hood/Mike Cooley (Drive-By Truckers)
  • Chan Kinchla (Blues Traveler)
  • Mato Nanji (Indigenous)

36.

Who? – Jeff Tweedy/Nels Cline

What? – Wilco

Where? – Irving Plaza, Town Hall, Beacon Theatre, Sinatra Park, Coney Island Cyclones Ballpark, The Tower

When? – about 6-7 times between 1995-2018

Why? – Tweedy improved a lot as a player and developed a unique style after taking lessons from Tom Verlaine. Cline added some eccentricity and experimentation into the band.

35.

Who? – Chris Haskett

What? – Rollins Band

Where? – Irving Plaza, The Limelight, Roseland Ballroom (x2)

When? – 1991-1993

Why? – So much energy in his stage presence and playing style. One of the most intense live bands I’ve seen. Hanks Rollins Band opening for The Beasties Boys two nights in a row at the Roseland Ballroom was one of my concert highlights.

34.

Who? – Rich Robinson

What? – The Black Crowes

Where? – Roseland Ballroom, Irving Plaza, Garden State Arts Center, Headliners of H.O.R.D.E. Festival, Sea Hear Now Festival

When? – 7-8 times between 1995-2024

Why? – Rich went from a very good straight forward rocker on guitar in the vein of Keith Richards to a jam band virtuoso – I don’t think I’ve seen a band grow so much over time.

33.

Who? – Robert Cray

What? – The Robert Cray Band

Where? – Garden State Arts Center, Madison Square Garden

When? – 1994 and 2011(?)

Why? – “Modern” blues player that plays like an O.G. – I saw him the second time as an opener for Clapton (who also had Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramwell III playing guitar onstage with him) and when Cray joined Clapton’s band on stage for a few songs, he rose to the occasion and fit right in.

32.

Who? – Glenn Tipton/K.K. Downing

What? – Judas Priest

Where? – Nassau Coliseum

When? – 1982

Why? – old school metal? Yes, please. Priest, with Dokken as the opener, was my second concert and I was 14 years old, so I can’t claim to remember too much but I do remember it was a great time. On a side note, after the show while leaving the arena, this big metal head started bullying some Chinese kid calling him “egg roll” and pushing him around. The kid did a jumping spin kick that bloodied the bullies face. It was awesome.

Named after places, specific (ie Panama) or vague (ie room or lake)…. only they’re all instrumental.
As I've gone along I find instrumentals have expanded my width of genres I can list to , with the sometimes bonus of no bothersome vocals. And it seems like with no lyrics to deal with they can put all their lyrical energy in the song titles.

Here are five songs that at one point were on my list, and I like them as much as many songs that are on my 31. There are a lot more that could be "the last five out" as well.

1. Blue Railroad Train - Doc Watson - I've always found Doc's guitar playing and voice relaxing. This song goes out to all the folks, including my kin, in Western NC. Doc was from Deep Gap, NC, which is about 20 minutes from Boone. I'll be connecting with his spirit in April (Merlefest).

2. Steel Rail Blues - Gordon Lightfoot - I love the flow of this song, and when Gordon sings, "hee hee heeee."

3. Some Go Home - Jerry Jeff Walker - Jerry Jeff has not left the station yet, people. He wrote this about watching people on a train, and thinking about their stories as well as his own.

4. Southbound Train - Muddy Waters - Muddying up a playlist is a good thing.

5. Workin' For The MTA - Justin Townes Earle - Giving the late Justin Townes Earle some exposure is also a good thing.

Number (#), Please
31 Top Songs Starting With a Number.
The FAQ

1. Shouldn’t that be “Top 31 Songs?”
Sure, but then it wouldn’t start with a number

2.And that’s… important?
Apparently!

3. Whatever. Talk about your process and whatnot.
I searched for songs that fit. Well, okay, mostly I wanted a theme that was narrow enough to handle in the limited time I had around work and that Real Life thing. Not only did this fit, but it followed some of the other lists I saw where fun in creation was as important as showing off good tunes.

4, So there’s no loss in quality?
Well, eye of the beholder of course, but I at least strongly like the 31 songs I included, and I had to make tougher cuts that you might expect. There’s understandably a mix of genres and styles, and so the flow from one to another could be mixed. Especially given the order.

5. The order isn’t “least favorite” at 31 to “favorite” at 1?
Nope, it’s highest number at 31 to lowest at 1. Making this a more literal countdown.

6. And a Last 5 out?
That’s “5 Last Out”, thanks. But I’ve got you.

5 Last Out
21st Century Schizoid Man - King Crimson.
Included because of peer pressure. Also for more prog representation. Here because I have another “21” in the main countdown.

99 - Toto
I had 3 great choices of songs for “99” between this, Jay-Z and Nena, but all fell just short. Included because it’s a fun song and (as a tiebreaker?) it’s a purely numeral title.

2112 - Rush
Definitely deserves a spot on this list as a classic. That said, I decided to keep a 20 minute song as something optional.

54-46 Was My Number - Toots & The Maytals
Serves as a (secondary) title track for the playlist. Also, I’m not counting dashes, so this counts as “5446”. You’ll see more of this pretty quickly.

10,000 Horses - Candlebox
I do really love this song, but I just featured Candlebox, so to the 5 Last Out it goes!

It’ll be interesting listening to the 1-31 playlists and trying to remember what songs relate to what theme
Also, how many songs will be repeated.

If I have time, I might put together a charitable contest for this countdown. (You haven't been in my countdowns, but we generally have 1-2 contests, with the winners getting donations to their specified charities and sometimes gifts for themselves as well.) If I do, something about how many repeats will be one of the questions.

I doubt I'll have repeats in this particular draft. Some of these songs have turned up elsewhere, but they just don't seem to fit anyone else's theme.

(Especially since Beyonce doesn't have umlauts. How could anyone forget her?)

32 - George Michael - Careless Whisper

Dude
Do you not think this is a sad song?
It fits the criteria of being in D Minor
And it ranked 32, not #1

It was a joke, since I'm doing songs with saxophone. I was intimating you stole my thunder.

Full GTA long list Youtube playlist

I STRONGLY recommend that any viewer puts this onto shuffle if they opt to listen to said playlist. One, it will shake things up, and two, it will throw in what is expected of any radio station today - COMMERCIALS. Yep, the GTA series goes to no end to properly simulate real life, so all of the stations will run a series of commercials for a bunch of clearly fake and absurd things, much of which is referenced in the game(s), I've tacked a dozen or so on to the end of the list, so shuffle things up and get one at random as you listen!
