Middle Aged Dummies!! Artists #1's have been posted!! (5 Viewers)

Pip found covers for Neil on the last one. Are there any covers? Is it a few like that, or whole lot?
I was going to include YouTube links to my songs like I did for krista’s. I don’t have Spotify subscription and Spotify links in posts don’t really work for me, but did listen to the playlists on Spotify.

I have one song that it does not look like is on Spotify, and just on YouTube in my list so far though (and no cover). A few Ben Jor’s albums don’t seem on Spotify, but at least most of my songs from those albums have made it into best of compilations.

Also I think I'm settled on my ranking criteria. I want to incorporate having it be a ranking of my favorites like instructed, but also want to put a little weight on how accessible the songs are for people new to the band/genre. So like 75% my personal ranking and 25% on how accessible it is. That way, some of the songs that require more active listening to appreciate won't all be the first songs people experience.

I’ll probably order my playlist chronologically rather than by my rankings.
I might go that route as well if I'm having problems ranking the songs.
Don't be a lazy ***. Lol
Fair point - would take some of the fun out of it.
Yeah, I’ll be submitting a ranked list for this exercise, but I’m making a playlist of my songs that I’ll put in chronological order for better flow.

I don't Spotify, either. I suspect my live versions of the songs that I'm going to supplement my daily listings with are available there, anyway. The album stuff should all be.

I haven't figured out just how to rank this stuff yet. One song is very sentimental, and it will likely be the top one for that reason. Other than that, I have no idea yet.

I vote Police/Green Day because selfishly I like both of them but have definitely not heard 31 songs from either.
I'd vote Green Day as well. There is a bit I haven't heard but know and love the hell out of 2-3 albums.

Green Day has 13 studio albums, 4 live albums and a rarities collection.

If you do Billy Joe Armstrong instead, you can throw in Foxboro Hot Tubs, The Longshot, Pinhead Gunpowder, The Network and the duets album he did with Norah Jones.

Rankings done. Despite Big Thief only having 5 albums (though one was a double album), that was really tough and I didn't even dive into their live release. Not sure if everyone will dig them but I stand by my assessment they are the *best band in the world.

*I am talking about bands of this moment. Bands putting out their best stuff now.

What are you eager beavers planning to do for the rest of the month?

I'm going to relax, procrastinate, listen to b-sides and remixes and turn in my list on June 4th

I'm suddenly determined to turn this into a spreadsheet. Thinking of determining a few ranking categories for each song, such as vocals, production, etc. and averaging scores and using that. I can incorporate song playcount into the ranking too since it follows the more times I listen to it, the more I like it. I want a few of the categories to really embody why I listen to this particular artist though. For Sigur Ros, it's going to be something like "how effectively does the song make me feel the emotions it sets out to", or "how much does the song make me want to sell everything I own, move to Iceland to dress like an elf and run a fermented shark stand."

@rockaction you requested access to "edit" the form. I granted and then realized a no on editing the questions. On the link I gave, you should just be able to answer the questions. Let me know if that's not the case

Ah, I didn't get an email with the link. I don't really know what I'm doing, so it's best to let somebody else try. My gmail just sort of went on the fritz.

ok, I found out I gave you guys the wrong URL originally. I have corrected it so it says "submit" button at bottom

Okay, I went and entered some nonsensical alphabet letters and it saved it. I'm not sure how it puts it into chart form (and it didn't show me said chart), but it seems to work on my end at least as far as saving the songs went.

Idea time today.....

1) looks like several of you are thinking of listing songs chronologically. No problem at all with that. I'm think of listing the songs each day in two sections, one of those listed that way, and the other of those that list favorite #1 and least favorite #31

2) I've created a GOOGLE FORM to submit your lists. Can someone that has like a list of five songs already test this out and see if it works well for you as I have not started my list yet. I'm hoping to get your song and a spotify or YT link on the form

Here's the link.

I've set it so you can change it as many times as you like. Binky - is a no to this.

If it gets a good response, I'll have everyone do it this way. appreciate any good or bad feedback on it as I've never done one of these forms before.
Just submitted a test form

I'm going to be selecting Damon Albarn songs recorded under at least four different band names. The form isn't set up to accommodate this.

I have some notes with some of my songs to clarify version, and adding in where he was a co-artist or guest on a song. Could potentially put that info in the line with song title and URL for the relevant song, but that may just be a lot to put in there (I don’t know if character limit).

Thanks for this... Let me see if I can add "notes" section to each one.

So this is the initial download into spreadsheet. This could make it super easy for me to the point where I can contemplate extending this from like 35 days to 60ish to break up the daily lists in half.

Going to add a field for your screen name and hopefully a "notes" line for each song now.

ok, so could not add a "Notes" section, but I did increase the Artist field from "short answer" to "paragraph mode:

I tested it, and I hit return after entering song name, and again after posting YT link, and then wrote gibberish song write up.

Here's how my new Police entry looked at the bottom below.

After you submit your first try, there is an edit button... PLEASE save and bookmark that for any changes you want as you can see from above, I have two entries now for The Police.

If you don't only will use the latest time stamp

heck, don't really need to list the song title the way the links display the title here these days

Still trying to decide. The Cure, The Police, Cars, Green Day, or Supertramp just for otb.

Any preferences?

Either The Cure or The Police would be great. I had The Police on my list, don't know the "deep" Cure stuff well enough...

Is it possible to list the four in that one field? should be...

I'll probably end up concatenating the band name and song title. Blur and Gorillaz are quite a bit shorter than The Good, the Bad & the Queen

I'm kinda baffled how the last two with 44 and 45 songs per day were never asked to be broken up, and now 52

Don't take it personally or anything. I can only say that trying to keep up with that last thread felt like work, almost where it was sucking some of the joy out of it. I'm in these to listen to and appreciate new music, for long forgotten memories. I don't know why we need to rush it.

i totally get it.. I gave up last thread also. I think I found a solution to make it super easy for me to process all the lists and break them in half each day.

So I promise you guys that my Phish list won't contain too much weirdness. So what I'll do for the next month is post links to that stuff in here, so when it comes to the countdown you'll really appreciate them more. Some of this stuff is pretty bad.

My favorite Phish song is in that set

I’m out for vacation for a couple of weeks at the beginning of July. Probably won’t be able to listen along to the top half if split into two.

Obviously, don’t do anything purely on my account, and fine with however zegras wants to reveal. Just giving the data point that I’m at least one participant that will be out of pocket then.

What if there's no spotify version of a song, its only on youtube? Do these playlists prefer a consistent platform?
Spotify suuuuuuucks
Not if you pay the $10 a month.

I pay that to Apple instead — I think better sound quality and interface than Spotify. Love their new Classical Music app.
Ok. That doesn’t change what I said - and I disagree as a former Apple user about which is better.

I tried them all. For me Spotify is the champ when it comes to interface / ease of use / etc. Amazon was the worst, Apple wasn't horrible but they lacked some little comforts that Spotify had (like deleting a song from a playlist - it's not easy on Apple). And making me use itunes on the PC is criminal.

It definitely comes to personal preference.

I frequently listen to classical music while working, and Apple is far superior to Spotify for quality there (currently listening to Rachmaninoff in hi-res lossless).

I am not really a playlist person, prefer to explore. Their classical music app that comes with the regular subscription blows away Spotify with ability to filter and explore.
