What if there's no spotify version of a song, its only on youtube? Do these playlists prefer a consistent platform?
Spotify suuuuuuucks
Not if you pay the $10 a month.

I pay that to Apple instead — I think better sound quality and interface than Spotify. Love their new Classical Music app.
Ok. That doesn’t change what I said - and I disagree as a former Apple user about which is better.

I tried them all. For me Spotify is the champ when it comes to interface / ease of use / etc. Amazon was the worst, Apple wasn't horrible but they lacked some little comforts that Spotify had (like deleting a song from a playlist - it's not easy on Apple). And making me use itunes on the PC is criminal.
It definitely comes to personal preference.

I frequently listen to classical music while working, and Apple is far superior to Spotify for quality there (currently listening to Rachmaninoff in hi-res lossless).

I am not really a playlist person, prefer to explore. Their classical music app that comes with the regular subscription blows away Spotify with ability to filter and explore.
Sure it's personal preference. I was just pointing out that, sure the free version of Spotify is frustrating but if you pay for it, it is not. They have little incentive to make the free version amazing and just as good as the premium service. Apple and Amazon are just as bad if you don't actually pay for it - which of course makes sense.

That is fair. I was not the one who made the "sucks" remark. Maybe I should have said in my first reply that I probably would not go as far saying that it sucks... I'd probably phrase my view of Spotify as being not awful if pay for it, but Apple better for me based on how I prefer to listen to music. So, if paying $10/month for one or the other, I'd personally rather take Apple.

Ok... I'm 50 songs in on Elliott Smith's Discography with 50 plus more to go, not counting stuff from his Heatmiser days (which I will be including.) I've managed to eliminate 27 songs from consideration thus far. Enough good songs to make a career for some other artists. Damn this is going to be a lot harder than I thought!

This sounds interesting - I might check it out for a month to give it a try.
It is worth checking out if into exploring classical more. Here is one review of it. I love how easy it is to filter for 21st conductors or composers, for example, and find some music to explore. Or browse by instruments featuring, let’s say, the harpsichord, and it will bring up a curated playlist, latest releases, and popular artists all related to the harpsichord.

Very cool. That sounds like a nice feature.
Spotify basically does the same thing if you search harpsichord
I just plugged harpsichord into Spotify, and, no, not really. When I flip over to the songs tab on Spotify, it first hits songs with the word “harpischord“ in the title (such as one by Cypress Hill), or to the artists tab, artists with “harpsichord” in their name.

ETA: Comparison here of artists list with Spotify on top and Classical music app on bottom. Spotify list has a bunch of artists with harpischord in the name and Lavinia Meijer who apparently plays a completely different instrument, the harp.

Apple app lists folks like Robert Hill, Anthony Newman, Trevor Pinnock, et al.

When I type harpsichord and to playlists I get the following:

1
2
3
4
5

Plus a bunch more

It made a regular harpsichord and dark harpsichord playlist based on my listening habits that ranges from Handel to Simon and Garfunkel to Cocteau Twins.

Scrolled down more and there’s several more harpsichord playlists made based on my listening habits: Rock Harpsichord, relaxing harpsichord, baroque harpsichord, classical harpsichord, harpsichord heavy metal.

This sounds like a horrible way to listen to music.

I don’t plan on listening. Just showing him Spotify will make you playlists by instruments if you ask it to. I probably wouldn’t listen this way but if I was looking for songs featuring the harpsichord for some odd reason ( like one of our crazy drafts) it certainly speeds up research.

These just prove to me why I vastly prefer the Apple setup, but okay.

So you are looking for a specific artist who plays the harpsichord, not necessarily songs with the harpsichord? Apple might be more efficient with that. Typing harpsichord players will get you that though it does get confused and includes some useless harp players. But it gives me Pinnock, Pierre Hantai, Richard Lester, etc.

Yeah, that is for finding artists. I can search or browse by artist, composer, conductors. I was just using harpsichord as a bit of an odd example, but I can do similar with cello, clarinet, etc, and it will bring to playlists, artists, recordings (cello example — some cellists there, but not long before Spotify suggests CeeLo Green). As I mentioned earlier, just enjoy exploring while listening to music.

As another example, here are a few photos from when I go to the harpsichord playlist. First song is Bach’s Keyboard Concerto No. 1 in D Minor. If I click on that text, it brings me to a landing page just on that piece. There, I get the paragraph of text on its history. Scrolling down I can see editor’s choice and popular recordings of the piece. I can then click to “see all” works and can sort by things like popularity or release date. Can compare different versions of it if I really wanted to nerd out on it.

(Sorry for the Apple Classical hijack today, but really have loved the app, and not much activity in thread today anyway.)

Radio singing from the corner of the kitchen
I got the oven on, I got the onions wishing
They hadn't made me cry, filling the sink with dishes
Letting them air dry, waiting for the wind's permission

Very cool. We have three that have submitted their 1-31 lists on the form PM'd to all last night. One other has started, but not finished. It's very cool seeing all those links to the songs.

PRAYING HARD that @New Binky the Doormat booked marked the Edit Button.

List submitted at 2 AM, I fight with insomnia sometimes and I thought it would make me tired. . . it didn't. And, I have to confess, I wanted to try out Zegras11's app, I dig it and I hope it makes this easier for him as I always felt bad for K4.

So, I picked Stevie Ray Vaughn and I had not really, really listened to him (like, sit down with a nice set of headphones and really listen to him) in a very long time. I have purchased every single album on at least 2 or 3 different formats by now but I have to admit, even as a giant fanboy, I simply forgot how talented they all were, just blows my mind even after a million listens. Anyway, the point is that even though I listed 1-31, after thinking about it, that's not really possible for me to say "oh that song is the absolute best and that one I like a lot less." And alphabetical didn't make any sense at all to me so I thought "well, eff it, I'm just going to try to pick 31, slap the links in and hope like hell I didn't overlook too many" because SRV and DT really didn't do anything I would ever consider skipping.

Happy listing everyone!

I now remember why I usually avoid these song ranking threads. It is torture. Whatever song I am currently listening to I like better than 90% of the other songs on my list. If I did 60 songs, the second set of 30 would be damn near as great as the first 30. I am having a much harder time with this than I did with my Pink Floyd list in Anarchy's thread.

Just submitted mine through the app. I included the song titles in my text submission despite instructions saying not needed — it ended up being helpful because I realized at the end that I only 30 songs accounted for and was missing one. So, including text with the song titles came in handy as I was able to figure out which one I had accidentally left off, and would have been a bit screwed if just had the URLs there. (Originally had it a little bit higher, but decided if it was forgettable enough to miss in my first pass, it must really be my #31.)

Not a bad idea. This form thing will have a learning curve for sure.

@KarmaPolice Thanks for posting this idea originally. Haven't dug deep into The Police since college when my room mate/best man played them all the time.

I gave every song a score from 40 to 100. Would rank them every so often and slot the next ones. I'm down to Final 31.

Will go down the list in order and listen to them again, and compare each song against the one next to it and change if needed.

Don't rank them. Go chronologically. Or how they charted. Or really anything. Use darts.

We won't tell.

I think the angst is more about having to curate a limited list, regardless of method, knowing how much quality stuff will get omitted yet deserves to be represented.

I could listen to SRV live stuff everyday and never get sick of it.
