Middle Aged Dummies!! Artists #1's have been posted!! (1 Viewer)

I don't know who made who, but I'm a bigger fan of Bon Scott's version of AC/DC.
Me too. I would think most people do? So far we've had 25 songs listed here and I have 17 Bon vs 8 Brian. I feel the music is more interesting, too. Great intros, cool rhythms. Better lyrics. So not just on Brian's voice. they were just better back then. IMO.

I was born in 83 and my brother was born in 73 so my earliest and fondest memories are listening to The Razors Edge and Back in Black driving around in his car because he was 17 and had just got his license and therefore was the coolest person in the world to me at that time.

I probably still prefer those two albums to anything else but also I don't think I would ever sit down and listen to an AC/DC studio album front to back. They're a classic live/greatest hits/come on the radio or come up on shuffle band to me - and in every one of those instances, I'm turning it way up.

Razor's Edge is a solid album. Only one song off of it made my list, however, but a second was a last minute cut. If I revisited my list it would likely be included. The album also features a heart warming Christmas tune.

On their first tour of Japan, this was the opening song of their opening gig. Japanese audiences didnt react so they played it again. Same result. They ended up playing it 8 times in 25 minutes. Hugh Cornwell yelled at the crowd for their lack of reaction. One guy got up to dance and the crowd finally got into the band.

Did you know the word "mention" could be sung in 12 different keys at once?

Love both of these. :lmao:

The Hold Steady “Realistic” Dream Setlist Song 25: A Slight Discomfort

And you say you're a princess
But I remain unconvinced
I've seen the guys that you've been with
They don't look much like princes

Album: Heaven is Whenever (song 3 of 3)

Year: 2010

# of Times Seen Live: Never

The Story: THS has a history of epic closing tracks, and A Slight Discomfort, clocking in at 7:13 ends Heaven is Whenever on a really down note. I can't get enough of the bridge (I guess actually more of an outro or a bridge to nowhere) with Craig's voice seemingly distant and the pounding drums and the swirling strings.

Live Notes: THS has only played A Slight Discomfort 28 times over hundreds and hundreds of shows, and only once since 2011. I wasn't there for any of them, making it one of only two songs from their first seven albums to elude me.

20 of the 28 times it was used as a main set closer, so that's where I have it in my make-believe list. Encores forthcoming.

#7s:

- Like seemingly everyone else, the selections from Todd, The Kinks, Chicago, Ray Charles, Queen (thanks to the M-AD worldwide countdown), and Elton John were already favorites of mine. And the Doves song has always been one of my faves as well.

- As usual, new favorites from ..., (the piano parts!), Spoon, and Blur. As somewhat usual, "My Hero" from Foo Fighters. As not so usual, a new favorite from Warren Zevon, whose "Don't Let Us Get Sick" was heartbreakingly lovely.

- Listening to "Missed the Boat" by Modest Mouse, I was thinking, "This is great, and I'll add it to my new faves playlist," but then saw I already have it on not one but two personal playlists already. :bag:

- "Grace Cathedral Hill" by The Decemberists was my biggest WOW moment. The keyboard, the harmonies, the lyrics. It's hard to imagine they'll have six songs I enjoy more than this one!

- I think I tend to like better the Sigur Ros songs that are less poppy, just because they're not something that everyone else does. Today's poppier song made my favorites anyway, though.

- My difficulty with female vocals often can make Big Thief's songs more of a challenge (though I've loved several), but the vocal performance on "Mary" was wrenching and chill-inducingly perfect.

- Frank Black had me at pedal steel.

- After the intro that was reminiscent of someone passing a kidney stone, I fully enjoyed Bruce Springsteen's "Something in the Light" and am ready to declare it one of his best.

- The first couple of minutes of "Third Uncle" from Bauhaus sounded like "Lust for Life." This is a good thing. Then it exploded into something even better.

- I spent way too long trying (without success) to figure out the time signature(s?) on The Tragically Hip's "The Dark Canuck." What is going on there? Absolutely loved the out-of-time vocal overlaid on whatever was going on with the drums. Big heart for this one.

- I'm old enough to remember when Ecstasy was called "X," but then somewhere along the way it became "E" and I always felt way behind in having learned that. It is still "E," or does no one even take it anymore? Anyway, I was thinking about this when listening to the deadmau5 song.

In 7th heaven? Possibly, but we’re certainly here for both a long time and a good time.Selected favorites, in that it’s not that I don’t also really like about 12 another songs (mostly those deserving of the <3 they’re getting), but in an attempt to narrow it down. In actual playlist order this time, because I know I’ll have to listen in at least two parts:

*Hello it’s Me - Todd Rundgren
*Broken Horses - Brandi Carlile
*Grace Cathedral Hill - The Decemberists
*Life - Trail of Dead
*Vio spilum endalaust - Sigur Ros
*Mary - Big Thief
*In the Doghouse - Slade
*Free - Phish.
*Rising Sun - Clutch
*Loaded - Dinosaur Jr.
*The Underdog - Spoon
*Third Uncle - Bauhaus

7s...

2nd favorite Todd song.
2nd favorite Police song.
2nd favorite Modest Mouse song. Love to scream out "shake, shake, shake, shake, shake".
While not a big SRV fan, this is my favorite by him. Maybe because it not bluesy.
This is now my favorite Heatmiser song. Hearted.
Favorite Alice In Chains song! Bunch of savages in this town.
2nd favorite Doves song.
This used to be my second favorite Spoon song, but this countdown has me realizing that that they have a dozen songs that fit that spot.
3rd favorite Heart song.

Also great stuff by Chicago, ELO, Dino, AC/DC, Ray, Foo, Elton

New to me that I really liked:
A Minha Menina
Broken Horses
Grace Cathedral Hill
Við spilum endalaust
Chip Away Boy. Hearted.
Badhead
The Dark Canuck

I suggested we go by "where was the band based?" but y'all wanted to do the musical version of birtherism.

LOL. Oh wow. Man, I don't know. I think the hard-and-fast absolute rule saved us a whole lot kvetching. I don't think I could have made it.

Can you imagine us defining what "based" consisted of?

:scream:
There were only a handful of bands that were based in more than one country during their career. It wouldn't have come up that much.
Wanna bet? With this bunch?

The Youtube video is all kinds of awesome, too.
Based on the video you might think drummer Phil is the most important member of the band. :)
WTF is Angus wearing? I can't even make sense of that outfit
Since Bon is wearing a prisoner's outfit, Angus is wearing a guard's uniform (or at least an approximation).

I actually have seen this one live. If setlist fm is to be believed the third time they ever played it. Rules.

Since a couple people have said it and they're my favourite band, I think it's kind of strange that "The Underdog" became **THE** Spoon song. It's great of course and I guess maybe it's the horns hitting perfectly at a time when horns were really having a moment. It wouldn't be the one I'd pick all things being equal as the big crossover moment though.

Damon Albarn song #7

Blur - "Badhead" from Parklife (1995)

A deep cut off of Parklife that's one of Blur's loveliest breakup songs, although the split may be between friends rather than lovers. The opening brass fanfare stands in contrast to the introspective lyrics and gives the song a classic pop sound that reminds me of something that I haven't been able to put my finger on

The chorus "I might as well just grin and bear it, cos it's not worth the trouble of an argument" got stuck in my head during prep for the countdown and probably raised it a few spots in the ranking.

SpoonHov34The Way We Get By

Many many rounds ago but this should be the big Spoon crossover hit. It's not their best song though. I'm going to do some more in thread searching to see if I missed it but I feel like there's a slim chance Hov34 actually align on their best song though it seems very unlikely as I think of it.

Round 7 thoughts - grouping things together so I don’t keep saying the same things over and over.

Os Mutantes - really dig the fuzzy guitar.

Brandi Carlisle - I loved this. That scream toward the end, oooweee!

Kinks - not sure if I’ve heard this. It was great.

Doves - outstanding! One of my favorites so far.

Elton - he must have heard this round was going to be a Prog-fest. Love this.

Other new to me highlights - Phish, ELO, Frank Black, Dino Jr, Blur, Bauhaus, Tragically Hip

Top ranked songs known to me - Todd (top 3), Police (top 5), Rush (top 3), Chicago (top 5), Stevie Wonder (top 5-10, no idea how I’d rank his songs), Alice In Chains (top 5), Ray Charles (top 1), Foos (top 5)

Lots of other known to me songs I liked - Steely Dan, AC/DC, Spoon, S&G, Heart

Awesome playlist!

Missed The Boat

I didn't think you were doing any off of this album, Marco. Now that you have, allow me to intone that this is probably my second-favorite album of theirs, second only to Lonesome Crowded West. Building Nothing Out of Something is probably my favorite, actually, but it's a collection IIRC.

I'm not sure I would have picked this song, but different tastes are different. Perhaps this will be the only song you select off of it, and our judgment of the album is as different as I originally thought. Songs like "Parting Of The Sensory" and "Little Motel" are two of my favorite MM songs overall. I thought it was a perfect epic album to follow the success of Good News For People Who Love Bad News. Even songs that most people find grating, like "March Into The Sea," I find really strong and well-done. I love the elements of the countrified strings on this album. It gives it a vibe that I absolutely dug at the time for some reason. The lush disco of "Dashboard" is a remarkable accomplishment. The album won me over easily. Good stuff.
Yeah, this is the only song I chose from this album. I like a few others—- just not top 31 for me.

Obviously, based on the playlist, their first 3 albums and the compilation you mentioned are my favorites.

"Supper's Ready" is not my #1 Genesis but it's up there. It is rightly considered by Genesis die-hards to be the crown jewel of the Gabriel years. All of the band's strengths and quirks are weaved into an extended multi-part suite that wobbles a bit in the middle but offers great pleasures throughout. I even hear Paul McCartney's early '70s work with suites rearing their influence. As Yo Mama said, the last two segments may be the best work the band ever did.

I listened to "Supper's Ready" on the way into work this morning since it is close to the length of my commute. I heard a good amount of The Who in there -- and even a section that sounded A LOT like the opening of Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" (only not done with a typewriter). Will have to go through it again to pick out more.

Our house has essentially been a bed and breakfast the last 2 weeks, with my in laws visiting, my parents visiting, and next, some friends visiting. I've been listening and enjoying the playlists when I get a moment to myself, but have not had time to post much on them. Very glad I did most of my sigur ros writeups ahead of time. My favorites of the last few have been Doves, Heart, Rundgren, Ryan Adams, Ray Charles.

So far, the one artist that was completely new to me that I will return to probably the most once this is done is Jorge.

Genesis takes the prize for the band that I knew but then realized I really didn't know at all. That's been a fun journey.

Also, my Sigur Ros top 6 are pretty interchangeable in terms of ranking. I pretty much love them equally and they are in a tier of their own. They really embody why Sigur Ros has remained my favorite band over the last 23 years. Most will have either a live video or music video attached to my writeup which I consider mandatory viewing. :grad:

Through all of this, most people have identified one or two songs that they knew previously either from a movie or a previous countdown. One song in my top 6 is one I guarantee most of you have heard, but may not have associated with the band.
