Middle Aged Dummies!! Artists #1's have been posted!! (7 Viewers)

Freak Scene is off of Bug, which was one of my biggest surprises of my month(s) of Dino Jr. As I said, I didn't click with most of what I hear of the early days. BUT, as it turns out most of the stuff that didn't click was off their first 2 albums. To me, Dinosaur (their debut) is a bit of an uneven mess as they were figuring out their sound a bit. Your Living All Over Me toes just a tad too far into the screeching guitar + screeching vocals that I seemed to be avoiding a bit. There are still songs off it on the countdown, but I can't sit and listen to it start to finish. YLAOM is also the album I usually see listed as their best, so WTF do I know? To my knowledge this was my first time sitting down and really listening to Bug, and I was blown away. IMO it has that edge of the previous albums, but Mascis' voice is a little smoothed out, and you can hear the soon to be 90s sound starting to blend in there too. Spoiler alert this song is not on the playlist, but it was in contention and I was just listening to the album as I was typing this and it came up. When I listen to this one, it almost like the two sounds are battling it out in his head...

No Bones

There was a little chatter about the previous song Mick. I could have mentioned it, but that one was off the album Hand it Over, which was the other biggest album surprise for me. More from each album to come.

I caught that last part - are you not familar with their earlier stuff, or was it more to check out what I liked of it?

I'm not familiar with Bug, You're Living All Over Me, and Dinosaur, really. I only know the "hits" or the most played off of the middle period, too, so I'm interested to see what those have in store for me.

I knew I was cool with their mid-period stuff, but it wasn't until the later period that I began to take notice (probably because Barlow was back in the band and I think I like Sebadoh's more famous songs than the mid-period known songs of Dinosaur Jr.)

I saw Jr. at Toad's Place in New Haven in the later aughts. Great show.

Of course, even if I liked it I'd check out what you thought, but this was because I was unfamiliar with it.
I think the theme as we go on and on in this is longer and longer solos or just ones I liked more. I agreed with somebody who said that Feel the Pain is a bit overrated. Still a fantastic song, but we are talking 2min+ needed to get high marks here. No little 20sec bursts at the end of songs or singing over solos at the top. ;) When we get to them, I will point out their other better known songs I have ranked higher and why that might be.

Keep in mind, this from somebody who knows **** all about guitar or how to play one. Just feels here.

I don't think they like this guy

It's Tim Yohannon, the proprietor of the 'zine Maximum Rock N' Roll, which was essentially the San Franciscan then national punk rock bible if you were into punk in the early eighties up and through until his death, which was mourned in the punk community by many bands and individuals. Green Day, after jumping ship from the indies to a major label, was apparently not one of them, especially since they were exiled from Gilman Street by Yohannon and other scenesters (a move that was all about, as scorchy might be able to tell you, the charge of "selling out" and going corporate when in the left-wing punks' mind, going corporate was the worst way to perpetuate both an execrable industry and an execrable society). I'm not getting political here. Just reporting the facts on the ground.

Nimrod, on the other hand, is an unheralded Green Day album, but a fine one at that. I listened to it many a nights driving from my place in Maryland back to my school to see my girlfriend who hadn't graduated at the time. Good times.

Listened to it just today while doing yard work. There are quite a few misses littered throughout, but there's one stretch I was bummed I couldn't find space for. Jinx follows up the mellow surf-rock instrumental Last Ride In quite like Sigur Ros on this playlist then there's no break before Haushinka. I Walk Alone was a last minute cut (love that harmonica) then the barley 3 total minutes of Reject and Take Back effectively represent the end of Green Day as a punk rock band. One of our kids tried to come up and tell me something during Reject and I wasn't having any of it:

Who the hell are you to tell me?
What I am, and what's my master plan?
What makes you think that it includes you?
Self-righteous wealth, stop flattering yourself

I s'pose Billy Joe wasn't done with Yohannon and his ilk...

23 - Jorge Ben Jor - Oba, Là Vem Ela

This one falls a bit more into “samba soul.” Song title roughly translates to “wow, here she comes.” Song about an unrequited attraction to a girl that he sees; he enjoys just watching her and admiring her beauty even though she does not acknowledge his existence.

But the main thing for me for this song is the crescendo of the instruments, along with Jorge Ben’s soulful vocals here. The orchestral violin kicking in around 1:20. The song then keeps escalating to the shift around the 3:00 mark where it then kicks up a further notch to the close, reflecting some of the increased excitement and can picture the girl getting closer and closer until she walks by. In retrospect, maybe should have had this one a bit higher as it has a lot of what I like about his musicianship, but, eh, it is where it is.

Random thoughts on some #23s I know:

Black Maria is one of my favorite Todd songs. I love the freaky keys, the exasperated vocal and the guitar fireworks.
Bring on the Night is one of the best reggae tunes from The Police. You can't help but bop along.
More Fool Me really functions as a breather to the uber-progginess of the rest of the album it comes from. It's hard to fully appreciate outside the context of the album.
Trail of Dead's So Divided has a few gems on it that are among their very best work -- and Wasted State of Mind is one of them.
Finding My Way is from the first Rush album, where they were very good Zeppelin imitators, but not yet much more than that. (Neil Peart had not yet joined.) It's a good "boogie" number, as the kids were saying back then.
I.G.Y. is one of my favorite Fagen solo songs -- and I got to see him play it at the solo show of his that I saw, which happened to be the first show he ever played under his own name. It was the first show on the first tour billed under his own name, which was promoting the Morph the Cat album. It was in New Brunswick, NJ, a few miles from where he lived as a teenager (his family moved to NJ from Brooklyn).
You Are the Sunshine of My Life could have been schmaltz in the wrong hands, but it's brilliant.
Mama Weer All Crazee Now is a fist-pumper.
Sand is one of Phish's funkiest songs and live versions can be quite the workout.
Do Ya is great '70s pop derived from great '60s pop (ELO's predecessor band The Move) and it was even covered by ... Todd Rundgren.
Girls Got Rhythm may not be the best song on Highway to Hell, but it seems like it was the one that set the template for the rest of AC/DC's career.
Empty Garden may have been the first Elton John song I heard that I knew was him. I was highly conscious of any tributes to John Lennon and I remember this being played on MTV a lot.

No love for this underrated dou?

Lenny and the Squigtones - Night after Night
Lenny and the Squigtones is a fictional musical group headed by Michael McKean and David Lander, the two actors who played the characters Lenny and Squiggy on the television series Laverne & Shirley. The group's eponymous debut album, Lenny & Squiggy Present Lenny and the Squigtones, was released on the Casablanca label in 1979. The album is now a collector's item because of credited guitar work by future Spinal Tap member Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest). A photo on the inside cover also includes two band members who look a lot like Derek Smalls and David St. Hubbins of Spinal Tap. Also includes "Murph", the keyboard player from The Blues Brothers, and "Ming the Merciless," purported to be Kiss drummer Peter Criss without his famous "cat" costume and make-up, though Criss denies it was him.

McKean was going to be my choice if we do this for a 3rd time.

Those were the days when **** (sheesh, Richard) Clark could safely sit among the audience, or artists could perform about 2 feet away from the crowd.

#23 Girls Got Rhythm (Highway To Hell)

This song has a short 15 second intro but they make the most of it. From the very first note I am ready to rock. Rhythm guitar and base drum for a couple bars, add Angus for couple bars and then bass and then Bon. Don’t know how you can’t be tapping your toe or nodding your head from the start. Good lyrics in this one too. He’s very complimentary of his girl. I don’t think it’s Rosie, tho.

Such a great album. Every song rocks. There will be more from this album - Bon’s last sadly - before the end. Actually, the wait won’t be long for song 2 from Highway to Hell

Album breakdown
0 74 Jailbreak
2 High Voltage
0 Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
2 Let There Be Rock
1 PowerAge
1 Highway To Hell
1 Back in Black
1 For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)
1 Flick of the Switch
0 Fly On The Wall
0 Who Made Who
0 Blow Up Your Video
0 The Razor’s Edge
0 BallBreaker
0 Stiff Upper Lip
0 Black Ice
0 Rock or Bust

I picked this song for the International list.

The first time I saw or heard of REM was on American Bandstand, they played So. Central Rain, 1984 maybe? That’s my last remaining AB memory
To be fair, So. Central Rain is a very danceable song.
Phone browser won’t let me do laughy smileys anymore

( My laptop croaked and died!! 😭 )

It seemed like a pretty awk tune to my Charleston rock radio ears but at same time it felt rather momentous

I was handing out hearts like candy to an 8 year old for round #24.

There were numerous new-to-me songs I liked and added to my Favorites. Many from artists I had previously struggled to enjoy. I'm going to list them all sine I have many rounds where I only add a couple. Seems like more mellow songs this round, perhaps that's why I enjoyed it so much as I relaxed in my hot tub.

My Song - Brandi Carlile. Yet another BC tune I enjoyed.
Dirty Pool - SRV - Yet another SRV tune I enjoyed. I love blues music so have no idea why I've avoided this artist for so long. My bad.
Don't Carry At All - The Decemberists
A Rock'n' Roll Fantasy - The Kinks
Lakeside Park - Rush.
Whatsername - Green Day
The White Lady Loves You More - Elliott Smith - Can't recall if I hearted any previous songs of his but this would be my favorite so far I'm sure. For some reason I'm always drawn to songs in 3/4 time
(I've Been) Searching So Long - Chicago - Didnt know this one by name until I hear the start, then the lightbulb clicked. Beautiful song.
Two - Ryan Adams - Pretty sure this is my favorite Adams song so far.
Blowin' In The Wind - Stevie Wonder - Better than the Dylan version IMO
Good Time Gals- Slade
Halfway To The Moon - Phish - really liked this song. My favorite Phish song by far. From what I read above this is not the usual singer and perhaps that's why? Love the music too, however.
We Are The Champions - Queen - still great
Carlos Is Crying - The Hold Steady - I probably should like this song but I do.
I've Got a Woman - Ray Charles. - fun!
Learn To Fly - Foo Fighters - Favorite Foo song so far.
Burnin' Train - Bruce Springsteen - not overly familiar with Bruce's catalog aside from the "hits". Enjoyed this one.
Bebe Le Strange - Heart. Another one I had not heard before but enjoyed.

Well, crap. I'm behind again. Hoping I can get to the 23s before the 22s get posted tomorrow. I'll keep my commentary on the 24s light.

Made my favorites playlist:
- "Don't Carry It All" by the Decemberists
- "Pictures of an Only Child" by ... - Not just my gold medal winner from this group, but one of my biggest "wow" moments of the playlists so far. Found myself on the edge of my seat for the whole thing. Loved the sudden stop of an ending, reminding me a little of "For No One" by the Beatles or Salinger's Perfect Day for Bananafish.
- "Untitled #4" by Sigur Ros - Entrancing. Bronze medal. (Feel like I might have heard this one before, though.)
- "my tears ricochet" by Taylor Swift - Two of her songs have made my list. Whaddya know.
- "Duchess" by the Stranglers - Silver medalist of the day. Loved the keyboards part that always seemed on the edge of going way off track, but didn't.
- "Mind Glow" by Dinosaur Jr.
- "Grind" by Alice in Chains
- "Carlos is Crying" by The Hold Steady
- "Abunchofwordsmashedtogether" by Spoon
- "Burnin' Train" by Bruce Springsteen - not sure if I'm more surprised by this or by my Taylor Swift appreciation.

Special Shout-Out: "Blowin' in the Wind" by Stevie Wonder. Amaze-balls.

24 Sigur Ros - Untitled #4 (Njósnavélin) (The Spy Machine)

First track we're hearing off of Sigur Ros' third album (), all of the songs on this album are untitled but all have unofficial names.

This, along with two tracks from their previous album, is the first Sigur Ros track to ever be used in popular media. It was featured in the film Vanilla Sky. The band allowed the song to be used in the film because they thought it would be funny to see Tom Cruise act over their music. It was also used in an episode of Orphan Black. As such, this song is a lot of peoples' first introduction to the band. I also think this was used by someone in another recent draft here.

I definitely have this ranked higher than 24th but this one got moved around to make the playlist flow better.

This is another that is sung 100% in Vonlenska/Hopelandic so no lyrics.
Someone took this in the worldwide countdown (don't remember if it was you). It's amazing how much emotion comes through in the vocals even though they're singing jibberish.

Aha! This must be where I'd heard it before.

Prodigy to follow with "Android." I generally like/love what Prodigy does, so it's no surprise I like this. Definite early '90s house/techno grunting effects in place here. KLF gonna move you! Surprised this is 2004. Maybe a throwback.

It is off their debut EP so either Spotify dropped the ball or I've accidentally picked a remix that was released 13 years after what I heard on Youtube when researching. It should be 1991. If it's not, blame me for having no reason to use Spotify

Edit - Wiki indicates it was reissued in 2004 by the label so I am guessing that is what Spotify have gone by, because reasons

i believe i'm startin' to get Daft Punk ... ol' RA bringin' some goodt stuff - not my usual cuppa, but i can see why he praised them so - lots to chew on.

Sugar Rios is really the pinnacle of atmospheric ... gotta say, it's like Cocteau Twins run thru This Mortal Coil's filter, while buzzing some shoegaze thru the chaff ... well, that's my take on it, at least - and i think it works for me.

JML are handling the Stranglers with aplomb ... i don't wanna be so presumptuous as to proclaim i'm (likely) the only other participant who knows they whole catalog, but i just might be ... regardless, it's been a deft peel out thus far, and i are curious as to how he slots the gargantuan soundscapes that are left to plumb - i gots a brick top 5 for them, but one (Duchess) done already been slapped out.

AC/DC are a quizzical lot for me ... the Bon era really hit me as the luded out sleazeball Ozzie cousins of everything the grimiest of the NY scene, circa pre punk, had to offer ... their moar arena rock era, not so much ... ergo, enjoying the earlier stuff very much.

loved the Cops at first blush, though i grew away ... but the lads were dialed in when they needed to be - sometimes forget how rascally Sting were on the bass.

Prodigy write up catchup:

#26 - First off of The Fat In The Land, clearly their biggest album in the US although it's closer over here, clearly not to everyone's tastes, or indeed to mine hugely given the low ranking on the list, but it has a certain intensity and I find it hard to leave a top ten single off the list

#25 - Back to back off of the same album, Narayan's a driving nine minute album track, featuring the lead singer of Kula Shaker on vocals and has a certain different sound to a lot of the album, with a lot of weird ups and downs to it which you wouldn't necessarily expect. Fairly certain this, along with another track off the album I pick later, was featured on our NFL coverage at some point in the late 90's

#24 - Wild Frontier returns us to newer material, although it certainly has somewhat of a sound that wouldn't be out of place on earlier materials, with drum beats that aren't too dissimilar to what you would expect to hear off of their third album. Considered strong enough to be released as a single off the album (although that concept was kind of lol even in 2015), the mix of older school beats with electronic elements that are definitely more in line with their newer material gives it an interesting vibe

#23 - Going right back to the start with this one, Android was one of the tracks off the limited edition EP that XL released before Experience, one track eventually migrating to the album proper in a different edit, while this one picked here was on extended editions of the album. This has got proper time relevant techno elements and a general slower feel, compared to the more rave centred elements which eventually made it onto Experience. If I didn't know it was by the Prodigy I wouldn't have thought it was by the Prodigy, indeed I may well have heard this before given I listen to a lot of old school/rave interned radio and just not recognised it as them before

"Black Maria" was the second in this little "Something/Anything?" mini-run of 3 in a row with a tune more in line with how most people think of this album and Todd in that timeframe.

I was surprised at the number of songs from "Something/Anything" landed on my list (not ready to unveil) but I did center my thought process around what people who don't know as much about him might like - as well as a decent array of his timeframe and albums. I fell short on the timeframe aspect as my last song on the list is from 2000 - there were just far too many songs from earlier times that I couldn't pass over.

I used the @krista4 decision machine (which I love - thanks again K4!) and started with 60 songs. I then ran those songs through the decision machine 10 times over a week's time to get a median pick list. So they fell where they fell.

Love to see the comments - and always glad to turn somebody onto the guy.

I could be wrong, but this is on Vanilla Sky too - or at least a Sigur Ros song is. I think i've heard them in another movie too, but could be wrong.

It's the internet, so of course instead of looking it up, I just post b.s. about something I'm not sure about. ;)

My two favorite Taylor Swift songs, “The 1” and “My Tears Richochet” have already been selected. I prefer the “Long Pond” version of both songs.

I honestly believe these are two of the finest songs of the 21st century. They’re that good.
just an fyi that the TS list is chronological.
Ah. Does that mean there will be no songs from Evermore or Midnights? That would be regrettable.
I made an account just to reply to this. Evermore is by far her best work; I chose tracks from both records for this list.

I’m so proud of myself!!

I’m watching the second season of The Bear (which I LOVE - highly recommend: this season is incredible) and I hear a song in the background that sounds familiar.

OMG - it’s one of my new favorite bands, the Decemberists! Great job, middle aged dummies!

Anyway, that show is awesome. Probably top 5 for me in the past 5 years or so.

They also played Taylor Swift and AC/DC, but I didn’t need you dummies to recognize them.

Thoughts on 7 #23 songs I know...

Mama Weer All Crazee Now - I took this song in the British countdown, and so a tip of the 🎩 to it.
Wreck on the Highway - I think I said earlier in this countdown that I like Bruce's storytelling ballads. If I didn't say it I meant to.
Empty Garden -
You Are the Sunshine of My Life - 🌞 Warm feel good song. Brings me back to the 70s.
Freak Show - This song reminds me of college.
Black Maria - Something/Anything is the only album I own by Todd. I've always liked this tune, especially the guitar in it.
You Don't Know My Name - Nice ditty.

I liked most all of the new to me songs. Thoughts on 7 of them...

You Don't Know Where Your Interest Lies - A new one to me from S&G! I see it was a B-side.
Oba, Lá Vem Ela - This is my favorite by Jorge so far.
Exquisite Corpse - Life is but a dream, life is but a dream, life is but a dream <----snoring emoji
Von - Feels like letting go of your worries.
Aerodynamic - The beginning reminds me of Hells Bells, but then it goes to funkyville until a bell chimes again.
More to Feel - I was expecting to hear Peter on this, but it's Phil. I think.
Heart Cooks Brain - Oddly good.

I finished the 23's last night. Not as much luck with this playlist as the last one but added a Jorge Ben Jor tune to my favorites for the first time. I enjoyed Oba, La Vem Ela.
Donald Fagan's intro to the thread was a good one. I know this song but didn't know the title.

Also added my second Phish tune.
You Are the Sunshine of my life and Do Ya are 2 others I know and enjoyed.

Wasn't familiar with Queen's Invisible Man but it also got a well deserved Heart.

Also Empty Garden, of course. 😥

Yeah love that show. I am 4 episodes into the new season and was so excited to see Kasama featured. That place is right by my SIL/BIL. I think I got lunch/breakfast there 3 or 4 times last summer. Was so good we just kept going back for more.

Anyway, that show is awesome. Probably top 5 for me in the past 5 years or so.
Yeah love that show. I am 4 episodes into the new season and was so excited to see Kasama featured. That place is right by my SIL/BIL. I think I got lunch/breakfast there 3 or 4 times last summer. Was so good we just kept going back for more.
The second half of the season is insanely good.

Geriatric pet update.

We have two cats left after Cassidy died last year. One is Nassau, his 13-year-old biological half-sister. She is tiny to begin with and has been losing weight. Her blood test in April indicated hyperthyroidism. We went through this last year with our other cat Boo.

She is a more complicated case as her degree of hyperthyroidism is milder than you would expect from her degree of weight loss.

Testing last week indicated that her T4 level is a bit higher than it was in April, but that there is something else going on.

Her vitamin B12 level is very low, indicating her body is not absorbing it correctly. This is usually due to one of two things. The first is a pancreas issue, but her numbers there are normal. The second is an intestinal issue. That usually means IBD or small-cell lymphoma. You can get a biopsy to find out for sure but it’s $3500, so we can’t do that.

She is getting another blood test today to determine the extent her thyroid is healthy/functioning. This will determine whether she can get the radioiodide treatment that cures hyperthyroidism, which Boo got last year. If she’s not a candidate for it then she’ll have to go on pills.

She will have to go on B12 supplements. We are deciding whether to do pills or injections.

Then we will have to decide how we will treat the intestinal issue. Most likely with steroids under the assumption it’s IBD.

Sorry about Nassau's health issues. My late cat, Cole, had a low B12 count when he was going through his IBD issues. I gave him the B12 injections. Their body doesn't absorb the pills as well as injecting B12 into their system. It was easy to grab a hunk of his skin on the back of his neck (or between his shoulders) and inject the B12. He was a very laid back cat too, which helped make the task easy. I can't remember if it was once a week or every two weeks he got the injections for a couple of months. Once he started gaining his weight back the injections were no longer needed. The injections and Hill's Prescription Diet Gastrointestinal Biome cat food are what helped him gain his weight back with his IBD. A little over a year later he would have a giant mass in his stomach, which meant he probably had lymphoma, it just didn't show up on the ultrasounds a year prior. He did very well during that year, though, so I am thankful for that.

Pip, our cat Sushi has been on the treatments for hyperthyroidism for almost three years. Once the dosage is right, things get better. She is high-maintenance and generally hostile, so we do the topical treatments in her ears, the only available skin on a cat, with no fur. She tolerates it better than pills or shots, which are out of the question (even more so when a pet sitter has to come try).

She's 15 and has cancer too. She is hanging in there.
