Brandi Carlile/Harder to Forgive - the opening lines hooked me ("I love the songs I hated when I was young because they take me back where I come from.") Distills my relationship to country in <20 words.
That opening line resonated with me as well.

that opening line were what prompted my Partridge Family comment regarding that song ... but, tbh, i loved Laurie, and i were a sucker for that gooey pop ... long time rumor it were actually the Cowsills backing Cassidy on them tracks - but there were a couple i really dug the livin' fudge outta.

did i mention Laurie? ♥️

I knew going in that most would hate 6-8 of my picks but wanted to make an actual playlist of my favs as opposed to 31 tracks I thought most would like.
I'm glad you picked songs that are your favorites. The ones where he sounds like he is possessed by the devil sound a lot like some other songs people have shared/drafted in the past, so I know those songs have some fans out there.

I understand the love. My childhood crush was David Cassidy, and a Partridge Family song (or two) always make my road trip playlists.

:hifive: The first album I ever bought with my own money was Up To Date by The Patridge Family. That was the first song on the album.

nice!

do you remember "The Partidge Family Album"? i believe it were the first release, and had "I Think I Love You" and "Doesn't Somebody Wanna Be Loved" (Freddie bit that with Queen 😄) ... anyways, the iniitial go 'round batch had a crushed red felt front cover - i remember my dad (who knew industry folk) scored me one, and i ran Laurie's initials (and a heart) into it with me fingernail - quite the romantic, eh?

fast forward a few years, and i were asking dad to score me "Billion Dollar Babies" by the Coop - he got it home for me, and was shaking it in me face "what is this garbage? 'RAPED N' FREEZING'??!? what kinda title is that? MARRONE! (pronounced 'mah-doan) WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY???!?"

ps - first platter with me own coin were "Through the Past Darkly" ... a Stones comp that came in an octagon shape cutout cover ... started my love for Jonesy ... inside the sleeve were a poem dedicated to him:

when this you see
remember me
and bear me in your mind
let all the world say what they may
speak of me as you find

I remember The Partridge Family Album, and that was quite the romantic gesture you did with your fingernail. I remember Through the Past Darkly hits album too. Do you remember the Stones' Made in the Shade hits type album that came out in '75? The neighbor, Chuck, that taught me the dirty words was going to get tickets to see that tour at the coliseum, and he said he would get me one. His friends and sister were going. I asked my mom and she was all, "Absolutely not!" 😤

yeah, "MitS" were early '75 or so, no?

i believe it were released in the downtime between the last Taylor album and the arrival of Woody (Black n' Blue, which were summer of '75, iirc)

i may be off here, but i do recall the big deal were getting "Angie" and "Bisch" on the same album - also rumor that Angie Bowie were the lounging chick adorning the cover - ever heardt that one?

are there a Doc(oc) in the house?

Made in the Shade was a compilation/greatest hits album covering the early seventies output.
I don’t remember any rumors about the cover girl being Angie Bowie.

I remember the rumor regarding Angie Bowie, but not the big deal about the two songs. I had that album on Vinyl, and my mother gave it away decades later to a woman that was a caretaker to my grandmother and her husband for a couple of years. I found out after my mom fired her. Some of my albums were being stored at my parents' house, and my mom gave all of my parents' albums to that woman plus some of mine. I should have never left them there, but I thought they were safe. Oh well.

I had a few tapes, all of which had been birthday or Christmas gifts. Culture Club's Colour By Numbers was the very first tape I had, I'd had a few records come my way in various ways previously but I didn't much care about them (One was Paul Stanley solo... awful)

In seventh? grade I was on a field trip with my class, we stopped at a grocery store for whatever reason and some of us were horsing around in the music section where they had a modest selection of current popular music. Some guys decided it would be cool to steal some tapes, as well as buy some, that way we wouldn't be suspicious since we were buying things, couldn't argue with that logic. This must have been right before the theft proof packaging was a big thing. Of course I hopped on the bandwagon too, happened to have a little cash burning a hole in my pocket, and came home with Chicago 17 and the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack.

Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack was much better than Chicago 17, which was hammy, but I liked "Stay The Night" and the video was dope.

My first 45 was Der Kommisar by After the Fire. First album was either Cargo by Men at Work -or- Pyromania by Def Leppard.

I just asked my brother and he received 2 albums as birthday presents (his first records). The 2 albums? Thriller and Synchronicity.

Minha Teimosia, uma Arma pra te Conquistar - Favorite so far from this artist. I do have to admit I have a negative bias against foreign language songs. Even though I often don't understand English lyrics I hear, foreign lyrics seem to distract me from the music while English seems to be a background to it. If that makes sense.
Interesting. I am probably more the opposite where can view the foreign language as more of the background easier. Similar to @krista4 , I’ve never looked up the translated lyrics for this one, as just appreciate the beauty regardless of the meaning.

He does have some English language songs. I have at least one later in the playlist that is a bit of a mix of Portuguese and English.

He has one from the same album as this one that is entirely in English, but it did not make my 31 because I can sort of tell from listening that English is not his primary language and it loses some of the beauty to my ears. But maybe I’ll put that one in the playlist at the end for xenoglossophobics or others who want to hear an English song from him.

One of the very first tapes I bought with my own money was Chicago 17 :bag:

We’re really just letting each other down here Pip
That was a huge album … commercially. I’m sure it was an early purchase by many people of a certain age.

Nothing from it is on my list, obviously.
They definitely made a very big shift around 16, or perhaps even a little earlier, Hard to Say...

I don't mind some of those tunes but your stuff is much more pure. I really like "Old Days"

Man, I remember that woman in the video. ❤️

Have to get around one of these days to start a long forgotten MTV video thread.
Chicago’s ethos was always “no one will be promoted as an individual.” Then videos happened and Peter Cetera was the star of them. This caused a LOT of problems within the band and helped lead to his departure.

As I said in the band history stuff I posted before the countdown started, 16 was where things changed forever. They had a new label and a new producer (David Foster), both of whom insisted that the band had to do sappy stuff with horns downplayed or absent if they wanted hits. Thus the “crappy and sappy” era, as KP calls it.

Stay the Night is one of the few songs from that era that I don’t hate.

Home from vacation and trying to catch up. I probably need to go back and give the 19s a closer listen, but for now I am listening to the 18s.

Harder to Forgive - excellent. I am enjoying Brandi more than I ever thought I would
Driven to Tears - back in college the guy in the dorm room next to me freshmen year was a Police fanatic. He played the sh!t out of this song.
Mad Man Moon - I was vaguely familiar with this song, but never gave it much attention back in the day. it's better than I remember.
The Mariner's Revenge Song - Fantastic. Very much enjoyed this and gave it a ♥️ It sounds very theatrical.
Working Man - A top ten Rush song for me. Most are probably familiar with the version linked in the thread, live in Cleveland, but if not, do yourself a favor and listen to it rather than the Spotify track...or heck, listen to both! Nothing wrong with the Spotify version, but the live one linked is fantastic.
Olsen Olsen - I haven't been real high on Sigur Ros throughout this countdown, but I actually found myself enjoying this one especially from about the 5 min mark through the 7 min mark.
The Nightfly - love it, but my brain simply can not differentiate between solo Fagen and Steely Dan.
Time Escaping - I was thinking this was starting off a little chaotic with the percussion and then thought that was sort of cool with the entropy reference in the lyrics. (y)

Still more to listen to...

Oh nice catch, hadn’t even made that connection. I mean I should have- it’s right in the name of the song.
