1st album, 1st song. And their high water mark for their first few years. I'd say more but Pip really nailed it earlier:

For their first album, ELO had almost exactly the same lineup as the final incarnation of The Move, and went to great lengths to differentiate themselves, combining rock and orchestration after being inspired by the Beatles. Most of the first album (which was never intended to have a name, but whose US version got titled No Answer when the band's US label called its UK label to ask that question, did not get a response, and the note saying "No Answer" was mistaken for the album title) is too baroque for my tastes, but 10538 Overture, its first track and lead single, is a fantastic example of orchestral psych rock. As lovely as the cellos and horns sound, the top-notch riffage and melody are what carry the song. Jeff Lynne and co would soon refine this blend to become one of the most commercially successful bands of the '70s.

The Story: For me, Killer Parties is less a song and more of a vibe, a celebration, just joy bursting out of the seams. A writer for Esquire sums it up better than I ever could:

In every last encore, Finn tells the crowd, “There is so much joy in what we do up here,” and while from someone else it could come off self-serving, at the end of a Hold Steady show, it is just a fact. A Hold Steady show is cathartic and ecstatic, a situation where you wind up arm in arm with a stranger, maybe two, definitely someone else’s beer down your front. The vibe in the crowd is joyful, communal, sweaty.

Back when THS used to play 200 shows a year, Killer Parties was a special occasion song, meant for nights where the band and the crowd were especially in sync - I only got it in 2 of my first 10 shows and Mrs. Scorchy went 0 for 5 to start. Now that they’re only doing 20 or so per year, it’s an every night thing, but it never loses its power. I still get goosebumps. Every single time.

Bonus Video: I get the sense that in the earliest days of THS, stage invasions were a pretty regular thing but died out once the band got out of the Brooklyn dive bars. Somehow, I’ve still managed to see two firsthand. The first one (linked below), I never actually jumped on the stage and regretted my lack of initiative for years. Six years later in Chicago, I got another chance, and uncharacteristically let myself go.

In a 2006 interview Madonna said it was the best song written in the last 20 years. Its been covered by countless artists and is just an incredible song. Its a song about addiction and the call of the drink. If you or anyone you've known has struggled with addiction , then you know the siren call and the lies that our addictions can tell us. This is the song a lot of people probably think of when they hear the name Elliott Smith and its a song that is worthy of the praise and adoration it gets. it's absolutely beautiful and touching... and somehow feels like it carries a lot more weight than his other well known songs.... anyway I think John Doe of the LA punk band X said it better than I can on the greatness of Between the Bars...

"[It's] a song that I defy any songwriter to listen to and not ache, wishing that they had written it. Or maybe it's a song that makes one ache, period. Two minutes and 21 seconds of eloquent melody interplaying between the voice and the guitar; an arrangement that builds without a seam; and a story that exists somewhere within a lovers' tour of modern day Brooklyn saloons of some Wild West-style prison where the inmates are allowed to share whiskey with the visitor/lovers... For me, this is a song that stops time, stops me from doing whatever I'm doing, and transports me into Elliott's world from the moment it begins to play."

1 - Sigur Ros - Untitled #8 (Popplagið)

Probably Sigur Ros' most defining, powerful, and fan-loved song. A masterpiece and their best example of the type of song that begins softly and escalates into something epic. The drums and Jonsi screaming at the end are exhilarating and insane. This is one of the best, most moving crescendos you will hear in rock.

This is the best live song I've ever seen as well. Sigur Ros has ended all of their big live shows with this one since its release twenty years ago. I heavily debated using a live version as it is an experience to see this one live. The version off of the Heima DVD is the best recorded live version and it is linked below. Just incredible.

My own story with this song was seeing it live at the Greek Theater in Berkeley in 2009. It was a blustery overcast day with a threat of rain throughout. The rain managed to stay away for the entire show until the moment in this song where it explodes about midway through at which point it just started to suddenly pour rain. The timing was close to miraculous, and the crowd and the band fed off it. The band has since talked about that show in a few interviews.

Clutch's weird sound may not be for everyone but hopefully I got them at least 1 new fan. Like them or not, the band deserves respect for forging their own identity and moving in new directions musically while ignoring the politics of the music industry .

I have REALLY liked our new format for these music adventures. I feel like the participation and group listening has been the best with the MAD31 formats we got into. I still love and listen to the GP playlists and even earlier playlists, but it's been different in a good way. I think some of our other ideas got a little too overwhelming for people (even the pace here did that to a point as well), but I like that we all submitted our songs, and then just had a month or two to listen. When we did other things like GPs, we were also searching for our contributions as it was going on, and was more difficult to just listen to good music.

Favorite New-to-Me Artist - Not sure how I remained completely ignorant of them, but I'm totally enamored of The Decemberists. Not only will I be downloading the playlists but will make grabbing all their vinyl a priority over the coming months.

New-to-Me Artist Runner Ups - Most definitely Big Thief - absolutely love the vocals - and The Tragically Hip, who I totally wrote off in the mid-90s after hearing one song I really disliked on late-night radio.

Artists Who I Knew a Bit That I'm Excited to Revisit - Ill definitely be downloading the playlists for Brandi Carlile, Spoon, and ...Trail of the Dead.

Band I Didn't Know I Loved (At Least in One Iteration) - I thought I had heard enough AC/DC for a lifetime but I guess that's b/c classic rock radio and SiriusXM just keep pumping out the same five songs. I wrote earlier that Dirty Deeds... was the first LP I ever bought (and I still have it!) but will be on the lookout for more Bon Scott-era AC/DC in the used bins.

Band I'll No Longer Reflexively Skip on SiriusXM - Unless I see the track is over 10 minutes long, I'll start giving Chicago a chance when I'm flipping stations.

I am curious from the Dino fans - what was the glaring omissions, if any from my playlist? As I posted, I'd guess the answer will generally start from more off You're Living All over Me, but that is mostly just based on scanning album rankings online and what they focus on when playing live.

As this went on, I didn't comment much on individual lists or songs because I sounded like a broken record. But I did a lot of listening. Here's some impressions:

Best "new to me" - Spoon, Decemberists. These two were way under my radar, but I really grew to like them.

Stuff I knew but ignored until now - Brandi Carlile and Taylor Swift both had a lot here that i liked. Brandi a little more, but I was suprised at how much I liked some of Taylor's stuff.

Stuff I "liked" but like more now that i got a deeper dive - Chicago, Slade, Frank Black, Genesis, the Kinks, Simon and Garfunkel, Heart

Legends that I really like but truly enjoyed the deeper dive - both Stevie's and Ray Charles

There were a few artists that I knew pretty well / really like that I didn't comment much on because i have/know a ton of their catalog - people like Donald Fagan, Bruce, Foo Fighters, AC/DC, Rush, Zevon, the Police, Elton John, Phish to name a few. But I still enjoyed listening to them.

I would say just about every artist had something I liked - if I didn't mention your band here, trust that you probably got an entry onto my work playlist.

And thanks to Zegras and Karma for putting this all together. Was a lot of fun.

Again, I wouln't take my top 5-10 songs from Dino too literally. I think my current top 5 songs are there. Gun to my head, Pieces is my favorite song and my most played of theirs over the last decade. That said, during my month of reasearch, no song grabbed me and was played as much as I Don't Wanna Go There. I toyed with putting my playlist more in listening order, and even there it was the song I had locked in to close out the playlist. That damn solo gets me every time. The preview at the 2:00 mark is already 15secs of awesomeness. Then it gets to the 3min mark and we get that amazing sludgy riff. Then the buildup to the ridiculous 4+ min solo that sounds like it's going to end about 4 times if you go by the drum fills, but keeps laying waste to ear drums for 4mins until we get the final 20sec outtro.

I didn't want to bog down my playlist with too much extra, but for anybody who liked what I brought to the mix and was going to spin my playlist - there are 11 bonus songs on there. Not my next 11, but I wanted to rep some things I passed over. There are 2 songs each from the newest 2 albums, then one more song from 7 of the albums that I didn't hammer on my playlist. So 1-31 are in MAD reverse order or I Don't Wanna Go There kicks it off, then 32-42 are in reverse chronological order - so the two off the new album are 32/33. Anybody wanting to dig in more, I can't recommend enough the albums I highlighted. I think Farm is an album of the decade candidate, or would be if there wasn't a song off my closer. I don't think can go wrong with just about any other full album depending on what era of their sound you liked on the playlist. I would say their debut and I Bet On Sky are their weakest though, and would leave those for the deepest of dives. I hope most of you at least connected with a song or two here.

Next up??? We are not revealing names, but I will be using descriptors like favorite drummer, perfect metal album, and best American metal band in Part 2.
