Went out last night to see no wave legend James Chance and the Contortions.  He covered Gil Scott-Heron's "Home is Where the Hatred Is" which was drafted by El Floppo.  He also stumbled through a rendition of "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" which I should have drafted.

He's a very strange dude but it's heartening he can still pack a dive on a Wednesday night 38 years after recording "Contort Yourself".

I'm way behind on listening.  Every time I've tried to listen at work, it seems like I get interrupted.  Rockaction's mix is a lot better suited for listening while dodging traffic on my bike than for reading a couple of chapters late at night.  I'm about 75% through his, sn0mm1s and simey's lists.  Hopefully Friday will be more conducive to extended listening.

 
I am way behind on reviews.  I guess I owe @Ilov80s a review from last night even after calling my BS on the CT artists. 

This one threw me off a bit, but that could've been the booze talking last night (and tonight).  I think a bit had to do with what I thought was some odd transitions and some stuff caught me off guard.  I get where he was coming from when he said he was looking for that smokey gin bar feel for the heart of his mix.  That's not the stuff I usually listen to while drunk, so that maybe where the disconnect on a couple of the songs came from last night.  As I get a bit tipsy, it usually goes to more 90s/HS music for whatever reason, and then when I get really drunk, it dips to ####ty pop music (yeah, I was listening to Miley and Kesha last night...).  I listened to it again today and liked the middle of the mix a lot more.  This is the rare mix that I new basically 0 of the mix - the only song I new was the White Stripes (oh yeah, that song I called you out about last night too). 

1.  Taking Back Sunday

Really loved the opener to this mix. 

2.  Lena Horne

When I gave the mix another try today, this was a standout.  Just gorgeous. 

3.  The Supremes

Not overly familiar with them besides the main couple hits, but everything I hear is $.  This was fantastic. 

I am thinking this is mix that I would like even more while high instead of drunk.  Good stuff. 

 
@Dr. Octopus was next and it was another that I had to listen to again today. 

It was an odd mix in that when I scanned the songs I didn't think I knew as much as I ended up knowing - specifically the Jim Croce and Byrds songs.  Another thing that I have noticed is that I like very few Simon and Garfunkel songs, but seem to like damn near every Paul Simon song that I come across.  Loved a stuff and had a few on my list like Cake, Ben Folds, and The Police.  There was a country song that wasn't my thing, but I didn't skip it or anything.  Good flow as well. 

1.  Derek & the Dominos

Listened to this one a lot today.  Sadly, I don't think I have ever listened to anything by them besides Layla.  That will change now. 

2.  James Taylor

See above.  I probably know 2-3 songs by him, and love them, but it's just not something I tend to seek out. 

3.  The Jayhawks

This was one that surprised me.  Teeters on that country line a tad, but also just hooked me right away. 

Also bonus point for finding a Bob Dylan song that I didn't want to skip right away.  It's a tad long, but I actually liked it.  Good mix, Doc!

I liked this one a lot but there isn't a lot in terms of my "big new finds" because so many of these are classics, but in that regard, I guess I'll go with Ain't No Love In the Heart of the City and That Was a Crazy Game of Poker, which was a really fun song but maybe a couple minutes too long. I assume this song is what listening to Phish or Grateful Dead is like, but I'm also pretty sure I'll never know if that's true.

Anyway, this has a lot of stone cold soul classics and I repeated Dream a Little Dream of Me like five times, even though it's clearly not a new to me song. All in all, very enjoyable mix, and the songs went together perfectly in terms of overall theme/cohesion.

It's just because he's in the brotherhood of stay at home dad's and I am sucking up so he keeps doing the spreadsheets for the drafts - this might be the most enjoyable mix so far for me.  It really hit the spot tonight and is actually a great 1-2 punch to listen to with Dr. Oct's mix since there are a lot of intersecting artists like Croce and Simon.  There were a few on here that I had written down at the start of this adventure like REM, The Police, and Paul Simon.   It felt a little out of place, but the Triumph song put a huge smile on my face and had me thinking again about doing more of a hair metal mix for fun. 

Another thing that I was thinking about during the mix is that because I am such a movie :nerd: so many songs have a an association with a movie for me, so I thought of The Cable Guy, American Pie, Armageddon, and even 90210 (yes, I know that's not a movie) while listening to this mix. 

1.  Joe Jackson

Somebody I am not overly familiar with, but during the day when the monkey and I are playing we listen to the new wave on the satellite a lot and a couple of his come up and I like them.  Loved this song on the mix and we ended up dancing to it a couple times this afternoon.

2.  Jim Croce

Liked both songs, but especially the second one.  Liked all the songs on yours and Doc's mix, so yet another artist I need to look into more. 

3.  Bob Mould

Love Husker Du and Sugar, so I don't know why I wouldn't migrate towards some solo stuff here too. 

Bonus points for that Extreme song.  Played the hell out of that first album and then wrote them off after that Hole Hearted B.S. I had to listen to over and over in High School.  And I don't care what that Limp Ditka guy says, that Counting Crows songs ####in' rules!

 
@Northern Voice  I am just busting your chops out of jealousy.  Hockey is by far my favorite sport to watch (big Pitt fan), I just don't have much access to it here , so I have to pretend #### like NCAA basketball and NFL football come close to entertaining me.  One of these years I will invest in the NHL ticket and get my hockey on.

I've seen all these movies multiple times but don't see the connections yet.. I mean, he didn't draft Somebody to Love or Sway or Leaving on a Jet Plane...

Primitive Radio Gods is on the Cable Guy soundtrack, James Taylor song is the song the Jock and the Uppity chick sing for the competition in American Pie, and Dylan plays Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind? over and over at the Peach Pit when he is deciding between Brenda and Kelly on 90210. 

 
Since the consensus song that all 3 people so far really loved from my mix so far was "I Can Be Afraid of Anything" by The World is a Beautiful Place and Iam no Longer Afraid to Die, my favourite song on that album is actually is "January 10th, 2014", it's so so so good.

The song is about Diana The Hunter a vigilante killer in Mexico.

They found two heads hollowed out in the sanctuary or on the dry roadside
This is a duel and she won

Good song. My personal favorite is Getting Sodas.

 
For @Mr. Ected mix, I absolutley love the Byrds So You Want to Be a Rock N Roll Star .. feel like I should know it but maybe don't. That trumpet :wub:

I really loved the Primitive Radio Gods song, it's not new to me by any means but I have't heard it in a long time. I'll echo KP on Joe Jackson as well - this is another one of those songs that I never knew who sang until now. The Counting Crows song was instantly recognizable as CC but I really liked it. I did not love so much the equally recognizable Barenaked Ladies... of Triumph for that matter... Blame Canada.  

I thought I Will Not Take These Things for Granted was a great closer to the mix and just a fantastic song all around. I'm not commenting too much on the rest because, what do you say about the songs on here by REM, Paul Simon, The Police, James Tayor, Elton John etc... they're fantastic.

People were talking about how few rap/hip hop songs there were that fit our draft, but metal seems to be worse.  I was trying to put together a metal mix for fun tonight and could hardly find anything.

"Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" is one of the alltime greats. Definitely give it a listen.

Thanks for the listen and I totally agree with That Was a Crazy Game of Poker is a bit too long. I don't mind long songs but I think it gets a bit redundant towards the end. Still, I love the many groove changes that occur in this song.

went with @The Dreaded Marco mix this morning:

I am nowhere near hip on the new music scene anymore so probably 80% was new to me - even some of the not quite so new stuff.

To be honest the start of the mix almost scared me off - it was a little too "noisy" for me (yeah I'm getting old) but it was far from terrible and could appreciate it. That's why I far more enjoyed the songs from Starflyer 59, LCD Soundsytem, Super Fury Animals (maybe my favorite song on the mix) and the Eels, from later in the mix.

I know Nick Cave and Brian Eno - but not the songs on this mix - and really liked both of them a lot. Was very surprised that the Floyd "moaning" fit in so well - I had my doubts when I saw the song listed.

Other "new" songs I really liked Built to Spill (another band that I'm not sure why I never listed to them as I've read much on them) and Galaxie 500.

Flowed real well and I liked the exposure to something different. :thumbup:

Thanks for giving it a listen Doc. Glad you found a couple "new" songs you liked. That's my goal in all these mix drafts--I expect to be familiar with 60-70% of the music from most drafters but hope to find at least 4-5 new songs/artists per mix that I can explore further. 

 
listening to @PIK95 mix now - will fully review later but I am already familiar with 90% of it by a quick glance and enjoying so far.

Just downloaded the Super Furry Animals Greatest Hits Album for give it a listen since I liked the song from your mix so much.

 
Listened to @Binky The Doormat 's playlist during this morning’s commute. While I was familiar with most of the artists on this playlist, most of these songs were a first listens for me.

Opening with a 10 minute Elton song was surprisingly effective. I thoroughly enjoyed each minute of the journey and found myself wanting more once the song ended. This song delivered.   

I'll admit, did a fist-pump when Can’t Hear Your Daddy’s Heartbeat came on because the drum beat is soooo sick. It hits you right from the get go and keeps up the pace throughout the entire song. This is a new song for me and a really awesome and enjoyable listen.

Neil Young – I forgot about this song but glad it founds it way back into my library. Thanks!

Overall, there wasn’t a single song that felt out of place. Definitely going to come back to this playlist for a few more listens.

Well I liked this mix a whole lot - it's really in my wheelhouse so that's not surprising. I do not really like Daft Punk much so that's the only "miss" for me.

I will that after now hearing three LCD Soundsytem songs on the last two mixes, I am now a fan.

You Spin Me Round was a blast from the past to hear again and I had also never heard the Melanie song before and liked it a bunch.

 
1st up today was @Hov34. A quick glance at the listing showed a bunch of artists and songs Im familiar with and a couple of myteries. liked the motown and RaB stuff and of course the couple of classic rock tracks. never really liked genesis or john cougar other than a couple tracks by each and these were not them. Also liked the nancy sinatra but not the other country songs. Liked the music to rest "my head against the wall" but not the vocals so much.

And once again I liked the arctic monkeys track so I currently like every song ive heard from them-- all 2 of them.

still a decent mix-good job.

 
Also got in @Northern Voice before lunch. other than the hip (who I love!) nothing familiar in this mix.

I liked the phantogram song the best with the Hip 2nd. I guess Im just not wired for this type of music-it all sounded like the same artist to me. it wasn't terrible just not stuff I listen to.

sorry for the short lame review but like I said,other than phantogram nothing really stood out as either good or bad. Im just a rock dinosaur head-banging to the 80's in my cave.

a tale of two halves. for me, I've heard those first songs enough that I don't feel a need to hear much more, although I really liked the SRV and Etta back-to-back.

when it hit PJ Harvey, I started to find my own groove with it- and I don't remember that song, cool to hear.

low spark- cripes... I went through a period where I put that on every mix tape I made, so it should've been played out for me. but it's been so long since I've listened that I was really happy to hear it- listened to it 3 times in a row. soooo good.

and then... *bam-:headbang:* . I'm not a really metal dude, even though I like tangential noisey guitary punk/garage/post-punk. but dammit- this all just worked really well. great flow, and great tunes I'd never really listened to or ever heard of. really turned my crank this morning. really, really dug that Black Angels tune- pulling into my catch-all playlist fo-sho.

always enjoy listening to these for the chance to hear stuff I've never heard of, let alone heard. this one had more bands I knew than normal- but for the most part doing songs I didn't know or remember.

I'll admit that it took until the Veils to pulls me in and then hit an amazing stretch that turned my crank, culminating with the Ramones, BRMC, Orwells (really wanted that song- would've fit nicely for me) and especially that Magazine tune which is a new favorite for me (and got me back to listening to them again- thanks!).

although not my vibe, the bouncey stuff to close out flowed great. smart, too, to put billy bragg at the end- I keep trying to put him in mixes and I never get it quite right.

Did you make it to the end?  How did you feel about the Dedicated tonthe One I Love ending out of curiosity.  It works on my system with nice sound quality, but I was curious if anyone else dug it.
