Moreno vs. McGahee (1 Viewer)

The SHARK move here is Jeremiah Johnson
Has JJ fallen off the map this bad? No mentioned in weeks and now you see things about him running as the Broncos RB6 and behind Lance Ball and Minor or whatever. What happened to the positive camp buzz and is he off the dynasty map this bad now?

When there's smoke there's fire. Hearing multiple negative reports on Moreno from camp as well as rumors of Coach Fox having already lost confidence in him. Regime changes are never kind to unestablished players.

Link? All the negative reports were from 2-3 weeks or more ago... Are there new reports?

When I watched Moreno a couple times this PS, he seemed to run with more urgency and aggression. He seems pissed off, throwing stiff arms and dropping shoulders, delivering blows, catching well....so I was a little surprised at how much bad press he got early, from the camp observations. Early camp, I was all in that JJ would be teaming with Willis before long, but that doesn't even seem close now. Is anyone holding JJ? Is he even ahead of Ball right now?

This is bs. there have been no reports of fox coming out saying he has been disappointed. Most Denver beat writers have been very impressed with moreno. notice this guys august 24th 2011 join date, zero credibility.

Completely agree.

And the doubly toolish thing whoever this punk is, is that there is a knowledgeable poster who posts about the Broncos who has a similar username and people might mistake this jerk for him. gr55 - retire this alias. TIA.

From the moment John Fox and McGahee were in Denver, I've been telling everyone that McGahee will be the starting RB. John Fox loves the veteran guys and loves bruising and tough running backs even more. I may be wrong about this as well, but I think I read that Moreno isn't a great blocker, and if that is the case, then he will see even less playing time on a Fox team.I would estimate the split at 70/30 for McGahee, and I wouldn't be surprised with more. This is just a educated gut feeling, based on nine years of watching Fox in Carolina.
It's not very often you can get a RB for $1-$2 in a $100 auction or a 10th round or later pick that offers you BOTH immediate value as a bye week plug/goal line vulture (similar to his role in Baltimore) AND tremendous value as a bellcow if Moreno goes down, which is not unrealistic. Kind of reminds me of the Jonathan Stewart situation in Carolina but w/ Moreno being far less durable than DeAngelo. I think McGahee could be an excellent, high end RB2 if Moreno goes down. Even if Moreno is healthy, McGahee has great value in TD heavy leagues. All in all, McGahee offers great value as a handcuff and a bye week/injury starter. Fox does love to run the ball!

:goodposting: GL vulture with upside. Great RB4 who might break your starting lineup since he can easily get you 8 TDs. Injuries are unpredictable, but Moreno has a history. Mcgahee's floor is high cuz of his vulture potential but his ceiling is also high=nice late round pick IMO

So far through 3 preseason games

Moreno:

20 carries for 98 yards, 4.9 ypc

4 receptions for 40 yards

0 td's

McGahee:

17 carries for 48 yards, 2.8 ypc

2 receptions for 33 yards

3 total td's

TD's may play a key here in giving McGahee any value, but Moreno has run well this preseason despite all the nay sayers, I think Moreno may leave McGahee in the dust sooner than later.
Moreno through 2 regular season games8/22/0 rushing with three targets for 2/35/0 - and then (not surprisingly) a hamstring injury that sidelines him for week two

McGahee:

32/104/1 rushing with nine targets for 6/37/0 receiving, with 28/101/1 rushing and two targets for 1/5/0 receiving while Moreno was (once again) injured and inactive in week two.

Hmmmmm.....

LOL, as long as Moreno is out, McGahee will be the better back. When Moreno played, McGahee had almost no role whatsoever aside from short yardage backup. McGahee had a very nice 4 carries for 3 yards in week one, when neither RB had any room at all to move.

And when Moreno is back in the lineup, he'll still get 2/3 of the RB touches. He's better out of the backfield, better in space, and can still be just as much of a plodder up the middle as McGahee can be. McGahee's 3 yards per carry isn't going to keep Moreno on the bench consistently.

If Moreno doesn't get healthy, McGahee can be a flex type. I own both of them, and as long as one of them gets a majority I'm fine from a fantasy perspective. I sure as heck hope it's Moreno, because he's a far more talented and well-rounded player.

So Moreno's 3 ypc is gonna cut it but Mcgahee's isn't. Moreno get's hurt every time he steps on the field, wake up and realize this after 3 years come on man. Mcgahee is at least healthy and a better goalline back, and I think may keep the starting job because Knowshon is known for Hammy's... He is Mr. Knowshon "Hammy" Moreno.

You mean moreno's huge 8 carry sample this year?Neither of them is very good but Moreno actually has some potential, mcgahee is a never has been career sub 4ypc rb.

:goodposting: It's dependant on Moreno's health. If he's healthy and in the game, he's a mid-low RB2 because McGahee will get goal line opps. If Moreno's out of the game, McGahee is a mid RB2 with upside to high RB2. If McGahee ever misses a game, Moreno is a mid RB2 with upside to low RB1.

So basically if Moreno is out this week, McGahee makes a good flex option for most teams. I don't think anyone can reasonably say McGahee "outperformed" Moreno so far. It's just a matter of health. Think DMAC/Michael Bush from 2010, only Moreno is not as talented as DMAC.

From Footballguys 'Players in the News' e-mail...

RB Willis McGahee (DEN) Broncos head coach John Fox prefers to use a two-running back system, he has also said he tends to ride the hot hand. As a result, Willis McGahee could serve as the team's No. 1 running back, even once RB Knowshon Moreno (hamstring) returns.

How is this news?

It's not news, it commentary and advice supported by information. You can get the news for free many places, FBGs is offering their take on how the situation could play out. You may agree or disagree and they may be right or wrong but that's what they offer.

I go to 'Players in the News' to get news. I expect and appreciate Footballguys opinion when there is news on a player... but there is no new news here. Cecil Lammey is a Broncos reporter... couldn't he just ask John Fox if McGahee's week 2 performance meant that he would be the starter going forward? Now that would be news that Footballguys could attach an opinion to.

:goodposting: all the Moreno boosters gloss past his fragility, which isn't entirely evident in his game logs. McGahee has missed three games in the last three years. Moreno? four, plus significant portions of many more. This guy can't take the pounding of the NFL. Moreno is a flex player at best. McGahee is the starter now and Moreno won't (barring injury to McGahee) get the top job back. BTW for those keeping track at home, Moreno is the 63rd-ranked fantasy RB so far this year (PPR). McGahee is 22nd. :football:

First off, the bolded portion of your post is completely untrue. Go back and read many of the posts from the "Moreno boosters" - most of them start with some sort of qualifier regarding Moreno's ability to stay healthy. Secondly, the assertion that "IF McGahee was getting 50% of the rushing attempts..." - except that he wasn't. In game 1, it was 8 attempts for Moreno and 4 for McGahee (for those math challenged, that's 33%). Moreno was the starter and getting 2/3 of the rush attempts - until he got hurt.

Is it possible that McGahee will get more carries moving forward? Sure...until Moreno is healthy. But most of the above two posts are half-truths spun backwards to attack a point no one ever made. OF COURSE McGahee would be golden if he was getting 50% of the attempts. OF COURSE he will get a majority of the carries while Moreno is dinged. OF COURSE McGahee's value increases with Moreno going down...but even Moreno backers said the same.

The discussion was based around the fact that if both were healthy, Moreno would outperform McGahee. In week 1, Moreno was 8 rushes for 22 yards, while McGahee was 4 rushes for 3 yards - hardly "golden".

Now if you want to try to somehow claim message board victory because Moreno gut hurt, I guess you are free to do so. But no one said Moreno would outperform McGahee from the trainer's room - and arguing that anyone implied as such is just silly.

I compare McGahee and Thomas Jones (in the recent past) to those Orkin commercials where the bug knocks at the door asking to use the phone, only to infect your house (Ray Rice owners and Cedric Benson owners (in the past) and now Knowshon Moreno (who I don't like or own) ). They roam from house (team) to house (team) making homeowners (fantasy owners) miserable.

Wait till we at least have a relevant sample size before posting nonsense like you did above.

I certainly think it is possible that McGahee could move in front of Moreno in Moreno's absence even if that weren't the case to start the season. You seem to be dismissing that possibility.

 Nope. Just suggesting that McGahee backers claiming they were correct is silly, when in fact Moreno carried twice as many times as McGahee did (and for a better YPC average than .75) in week 1, and only an injury to Moreno caused him to lose his job as the starting (and primary) ball carrier. And virtuall every post in support of Moreno contained some sort of qualifier regarding him staying healthy. It would be just as pointless as if McGahee were to tear his ACL this week and the starting job get handed back to Moreno, to come into this thread and post something equally as silly as "See?!? I TOLD you Moreno was going to get the majority of the carries!!!!!1!"

McGahee has been underappreciated, especially in fantasy terms, for his whole career. He had a few really good seasons with a mediocre Buffalo team, then had a fantastic year as the GL back for the Ravens in 2009- he was a top tier fantasy back in TD heavy leagues. His performance was all the more incredible, when you consider how many of his attempts were short yardage, yet he still approached Ray Rice's ypc, at 5.0.

Moreno combines a lack of size with a lack of speed- not a great combination for a RB. Even at nearly 30 years of age, McGahee is simply a better football player.

With Foster's injury, and DeAngelo's mystifying lack of touches, I will be confidently starting him along with Hillis in my standard scoring league.

Woody Paige not very flattering towards Moreno.http://www.denverpost.com/woodysmailbag/ci_18948656?source=rss

Woody's Mailbag: Broncos better off making Moreno a third-down specialistRobert and Duke ask Woody how Knowshon Moreno looks as a third-down backBy Woody PaigeThe Denver PostPOSTED: 09/22/2011 01:00:00 AM MDTUPDATED: 09/22/2011 05:40:50 PM MDTAfter watching the Broncos beat the Bengals 24-22, I'm convinced Knowshon Moreno isn't going to get it done unless he stops, or decreases, his "fancy feet." He's always trying to juke rather than getting down the field. Willis McGahee did just fine Sunday. Why not start McGahee and use Moreno as a Reggie Bush-type back?— Robert, WichitaIt's clear Knowshon Moreno isn't an every-down back, but I think he can be a good third-down back like Reggie Bush was with New Orleans. Should the Broncos make Moreno their third-down back?— Duke Dang, Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.Robert and Duke Dang, I actually have been to Soddy-Daisy, as an ol' Tennessee boy. I went to college with Soddy-Daisians. I think it's near Chattanooga, and Lookout Mountain (a great tourist trap for everybody else, if you're ever going to Chattanooga, home of the school the Nebraska Cornhuskers like to schedule). And Soddy-Daisy is home to a nuclear power plant. Everyone in Soddy-Daisy glows. I also know Wichita, Robert. It's the home of the first Pizza Hut.Now that we've gotten the introductions out of the way — Duke Dang? What were your parents thinking? — let's talk Moreno... again. When he camp to camp and talked about losing weight, and all the media (except someone close to my wallet) gushed all over him, my thought was, and I wrote it here, "What's new?"Moreno wasn't a good No. 1 draft pick. He hasn't been a special running back. He has been hurt (and, now, once more) and inconsistent and isn't a long gainer as a runner, and doesn't hit the hole hard and quick enough, and isn't a quality blocker, and you get the idea.AccordingKnowshon Moreno. (John Leyba, The Denver Post)to my insiders, the Broncos regretted that draft decision. (As, I'm sure, McMistake regretted practically all his personal draft picks. And how is it going in St. Louis after another loss, Josh, your 19th in your last 24 games as a coach?) And Moreno wasn't a particularly swell fellow. (I'll give all of you my cellphone number, and explain that in private.)Moreno is a third-down back. He will get yards as a receiver. Needs some space to start with. In two previous seasons, Moreno caught 65 passes for 585 yards (9.0-yard average) and five touchdowns. So you're right, D.D. from S-D and Robert. The solution is simple. McGahee, who had 101 yards against the Bengals, on first and second and fourth downs and inside the 10, and Noshow Moreno (when he's healthy) on third downs.Moreno and Bush are a lot alike. Neither has a Heisman Trophy now. Difference is Bush is a quality return man. Maybe Moreno should be used to return kickoffs (since none are ever returned any more). As I think we all know, Moreno is a short-termer even though he signed a five-year contract worth $16.7 million ($13.135 million guaranteed) with a possible $6.3 million in incentives. (How's that working out, Knowshon?)I think this will be the last year we see him here. Are the Broncos really interested in seeing how Tim Tebow develops as a quarterback? Or is it just a lack of trade options that keeps him in Denver? Any chance of moving him to Miami?—Sheryl Jeffrey, McKinney, TexasSheryl, gee, there's a new question. I'm going to be totally honest here so you don't have to call me on my cellphone. I know that John Fox is not a big believer in Tebow. He was sort of on the fence when he got here and has fallen toward the anti-Tebow side since training camp.I know that John Elway has told me on three separate occasions that he believes in Tebow, but that Tebow still has to become a complete quarterback. I know that Elway could possibly not be telling me the truth. Everybody else in football lies. I have chosen to believe John because I've known him since 1983, and I believe he told me the truth probably 90 percent of the time, on or off the record. One of the main reasons that I became the first and only columnist or any media person to push for John's return to the organization in the summer of 2010, and then, as the head of football operations before McDaniels was fired, was because I believe John to be an honorable, honest man. He assured me before training camp that he still had faith in Tebow. Maybe training camp or Fox or offensive coordinator Mike McCoy changed his mind.I don't honestly know how Pat Bowlen and Brian Xanders feel, deep down, about Tebow. Pat has shown no inclination to ever talk about the quarterback situation. He has turned over the operation, and In John He Trusts.Xanders was, or was not, involved in the drafting of Tebow. Xanders has never told us who he was in favor of drafting, and he has distanced himself, smartly, away from McDaniels. But so many of those draft choices made while Xanders was GM-in-name-only have turned out awful. It'd be nice if he said I was in favor of X (no pun intended, but not Y and Z, or Tebow and Moreno, but not Richard Quinn and Alphonso Smith). But that's his choice not to talk about his choices.I know that some people in the organization don't believe in Tebow for a moment, and I know of people in the organization who totally believe in Tebow. It's as divided at Dove Valley as it is in the community, but the persons who make the decisions have decided not to play him this year, or if and when Kyle Orton falters and the team is actually dismissed from playoff contention, or never at all.I don't think (emphasis on "think") that the Broncos are planning to trade Tebow, although I've heard from someone that I trust that they did discuss possibly trading him, and there was very little interest, or none at all, just as there was very little interest (Miami) in Orton. And John Elway and John Fox did decide, whatever the revisionist history is now, to trade away Orton and let Tebow and Brady Quinn compete for the No. 1 job. That's a fact.I sincerely believe that if the Broncos' EFX (my original name for the trio, which is pronounced "EFFECTS," as in special effects, not E-EF-EX, as some silly people in radio pronounce it and obviously don't get it) don't think Tebow can play, trade him before the NFL's Oct. 25 trading deadline. They are responsible for this mess, not Tebow, not booing and chanting fans, not me. The Broncos begged season-ticket holders to renew. How did they do it? By promoting Tebow in their literature to the season-ticket holders. They didn't promote Orton. They didn't mention him because they knew the Broncos would have lost a third of their season-ticket holders if they screamed: "Buy Your Season Tickets. See Orton."They caused this mess by trying to trade Orton. If Elway and Fox want to distance themselves from Tebow, then trade him. Do him a favor. Do everyone here a favor. Then, all three quarterbacks will be gone at the end of the season, and they can tank all the games this season and draft Andrew Luck. We know Elway loves him. He has said that Andrew is the closest thing he has seen to himself as a college quarterback. When the Broncos lose to Tennessee (which they probably will), to Green Bay (which they definitely will), to San Diego (which I think they will), then either get Orton out of the lineup and let's find out if Tebow can play (which is all I ever ask), or get rid of Tebow and let Orton take Denver to the Promised Luck Land.To revise my prediction, I think Miami is a loss, Detroit (as we've discovered) is no bargain and could very well beat the Broncos here, and the trip to Oakland likely will be a defeat. The Broncos should at least split with the Chiefs (although I have a funny feeling about the game in K.C. because Todd Haley still wants to get even with the Broncos), and Minnesota looks like a victory, but at San Diego and home against the Jets, the Bears and the Patriots. Don't take out a second mortgage to bet on the Broncos in those games. And now that game at Buffalo — the Bills are 2-0 — doesn't look as promising as it did after the exhibition game. This could get Quasimodo ugly.I know we can never right the wrong of trading Peyton Hillis, but how about the next best thing? Trade Brady Quinn to Minnesota for Toby Gerhart. He is the next Peyton Hillis. And throw in one of our meaningless running backs for good measure.— Todd Mather, Oakley, Calif.Todd, are you suggesting the Broncos use Knowshon Meaningless as a throw-in? Shut your mouth. How about if the Broncos trade Quinn, Tebow and Orton, and let's see what they have in undrafted rookie Adam Weber. As you know, he played for the University of Minnesota. Maybe the Vikings want him back. Trade all four, and throw in Knowshon — for Herschel Walker. Oh, the Vikings already did that.As you are aware, Todd, almost no trades are made during the NFL season. This is not the NBA or baseball. What trade do you remember last year? The Vikings got Randy Moss. Boy, they seem to make bad trades. Mike Lynn, one of my close friends from Memphis, Tenn., was the general manager of the Vikings and made the Walker-for-8,000 draft choices deal with the Cowboys. I like Toby Keith and Toby Gerhart, but there's really too small a sampling so far.But I'd make that Quinn-for-Gerhart deal in a Minnesota minute. But, then, I'm from Memphis. The U.S. economy and the Denver Broncos are in equally bad shape, and neither will be improving for a few years, at the soonest. Will John Elway's popularity go south, as President Barack Obama's has? How many years of goodwill does John have?— Tom W., Flagstaff, Ariz.Tom, I asked John when he was hired as executive VP if he was worrying about his legacy. He said not at all. He actually got tired of being Denver's resident celebrity. He's willing to take the chance, and I don't blame him. When you die, what does it matter what your legacy is? You don't care. You're dead. Elway wants to return the Broncos to glory, and has taken the risk that he may take a hit. He took a lot of sacks when he was a quarterback, and ended up in the Hall of Fame as one of the top five quarterbacks of all time.

This is just a educated gut feeling, based on nine years of watching Fox in Carolina.
that's comical
I may not know much, but I do know John Fox. Fox announced today that McGahee is the official starter.

Hmmmmm.....

McGahee had rushed for a season-high 125 yards (on 16 carries), his third time with more than 100 yards in four games. The last time McGahee rushed for more than 100 yards in back-to-back games, he was a 23-year-old rookie playing for the Buffalo. "I've got a lot to prove," McGahee said just before dashing out of the locker room Sunday night. "That's my desire. That's what I drive off of: People count me out. Keep counting me out."

Against the Chargers, McGahee broke free for runs of 25, 17, 16, 12 and 28 yards. Six of McGahee's runs went for first downs — giving him more first downs on Sunday than any other Bronco.
Through five weeks, McGahee: 85/384/1 rushing 11/49/1 receiving, 17th ranked fantasy RB (PPR)Moreno: 10/26/0 6/82/1, 53rd ranked

Even once healthy and active again (as he was this week), Moreno got zero carries (3/40/1 receiving as the change of pace back) this past week while McGahee did the above.

I guess Cecil Lammey was quite correct about how the situation in Denver would play out, huh? :football: :football: :football:
