Najeh Davenport = FWP's backup. (1 Viewer)

From all the Steeler first week camp reports (and there are lots)....

Kevan Barlow is sucking wind in Steeltown. Doesnt show much at all and has no energy.

The practices have had Najeh Davenport as the first replace Parker almost everytime the first week.

And Davenport does get an even larger increase of time at the goalline.

He is the only one running with the first team besides Parker.

Verron Haynes has been a bit slowed thus far. Expect him to again find some 3rd-down play time.

He has only limited reps, but was essentially the same as he has always been. Which is good for Pittsburgh.

The player overperforming the most is Gary Russell. 5'11" 216# from Minnesota. He has been impressive

but he will need to get some preseason game time to really show what he is capable of. He is worth keeping an eye

on in the preseason as he missed last year in college because of grades.

Larry Croom has been outmached thus far. He is on par with Barlow as far as what he has shown, which is almost nothing.

Good picture of the situation. Carey Davis has a lot of good buzz around him - a FB/RB tweener who can also catch passes. Sounds like Russell has gotten in a lot better shape. Its too bad Mosley didnt even last til training camp.

Carey davis will probably be a utility back, as he can back up the RBs and Kreider, possibly lining up in either position to keep other teams off guard. they seem to like Veron alot, I think he may assume #2 if proven healthy. Dookie as a goalline back, no way, hes getting stuffed in early practices, just like in the regular season. dookie will make the team, he can return kicks/punts. I like Russel. The rest are as good as cut.

How does Carey Davis fit in?
As a ST/FB. I didnt really list the FBs.He is trying to win a job on the special teams. He was cut last year and invited back.He has shown ability to block (particularly against defensive backs) for coverage/return units. He has been exceptional on the punt coverage particularly, not only blocking, but then getting downfield. Not exactly what you want to hear about a RB. But making the team "anyway possible" is always a good start. His size and aggressiveness (5'10, 227) seem to be a very nice fit for Pittsburghs style. But we are talking about a RB who is 26 with almost no game experience. But as a bonus, his nickname is "fats".

From what I hear Davenpoop has been routinely stopped in goalline drills and Parker has been more effective.
Parker is a good goal line back ( You dont need to be 250 pounds to be a good GL back ) Davenport will get a few series a game and will score a few ( On his own series ) but wont tkae Willie's goal line carries " Aniway that s my humble opinion "

:wall: I dont own Williep in any leagues (yet). And Im not worried about Najeh, at all.

At this point I do think it is reasonable to consider Davenport as FWPs backup. Unless he really tanks in preseason or gets hurt I think the #2 job is his (no pun intended). Haynes is coming off another injury and is more of a 3rd down back and special teams player than a backup to FWP.

As far as Barlow goes, he was brought in mainly for depth because Davenport and Haynes tend to get banged up a lot. I don't know how Barlow is looking in practice but he'll have 5 preseason games to show his stuff.
