Netflix Original: Stranger Things (6 Viewers)

Not going to read the thread until I'm all the way through, but just finished episode 3 and I'm really digging it.

The music is perfect.

Finished it today. Loved it. Was really bummed, though, because for some reason I was thinking it was 12 episodes.

Question:

Last episode, why did Hooper when leaving the hospital just get right into the car that drove up.  Who was that, and why just get in without any words spoken?

My interpretation is

Hopper had a look like 'what the hell, here we go again" so he just figured it was useless to struggle.  And agree with shadyridr that it makes a good setup for another season.  Sort of x-files feel to it.

Hopper made a deal off camera to get him and winona out- IMO, part of the deal was that he had to go off with the men in black.

the real question to me was how he and winona got out of the upside down... they just walked back and climbed out? didn't seem so easy for anorexia girl, and she was standing right next to the gate where she entered.

Forgot about your #1.  That's a nice link for season two.

Looks like there are doors as well as windows so perhaps a door.

Just finished it.  Would give it 8/10

For whom or what did Hopper leave the pie in that box in the woods?  Was that intended to be a cliffhanger?

Really liked it. I watched it mostly at the same time that I was watching Mr. Robot for the first time. I like Mr. Robot, but I found myself even more excited about episodes of Stranger Things.

El is badass.

Pie? :lmao:

I thought he took a pie on his way out from the office Christmas party.  I mistook the waffle for a lattice pie crust.  I had just watched three hours straight and my eyelids were heavy!  Thanks sml for clearing that up, obviously it's an important distinction.  I actually didn't know what was in the box that Nancy gave Jonathan either, rewound in 3 times and gave up, only realizing it was a camera when they showed him taking photos back at the house.

Was anyone else upset they placed the kiddie pool on the wood basketball court in the gym?  I kept thinking what a horrible idea, the water spillage is going to ruin the basketball court

I realize this show may not be for some people, but I loved it. The music was great, acting was great, and overall feel was awesome. One thing nobody in here has mentioned is Eleven's mom. I think she may play a role in season 2.

unless they water her every day like a vegetable i cant see how

Also, are there 10 other kids with special powers? Elle was number 11. I'm assuming there were 10 before her that experimented on.

kind of a stupid moment... but I took it as a way for the writers to show how loyal he was to his friends. willing to jump off the cliff that, IIRC, was rumored to have had a survivor jump in.
ya but how great was it when 11 snapped that bullies arm with a twist of her head ....SNAP

That was beyond stupid.  Kids calls up teacher and asks how to build an isolation chamber and then they break into the school with a ton of road salt and a kiddie pool someone just happen to have lying around.

Early on there is a conversation between Hopper and another officer, IIRC, about someone who claims to have made the jump and survived. Hopper calls BS.
thanks nv... yeah, that. I write not good times some.

ok... not really to address that issue- but generally, they used the teacher as the de-facto answer guy to explain things and move plot forward a bit too much, IMO. wasn't a deal breaker for me- still enjoyed the teacher and his role... but his use was teetering on the edge for me.

eta: and BN's av...

I didn't have any issues with any of that

any area with a lot of kids is going to have somebody, probably many people that have a kiddie pool

science teacher is a science nerd

Not sure why you are taking issue with here

That was a fun watch. I'll catch the second season if it happens. I'm guessing it will, as this show has a ton of pop culture buzz.

I'm pretty good at overlooking plot holes and suspending disbelief, especially in genre stuff, so a lot of what I'm sure bothers some doesn't bother me (though one character going into - not to mention, GETTING into - The Lab was ridiculous even for me). Keep in mind that this show is NOT plotted to a fare-thee-well like S1 True Detective or most of Breaking Bad. It can be a bit of a mess, but it was really enjoyable.

I thought the acting was pretty good across the board. Hopper, Eleven, and Jonathan being standouts for me (seems to be the general consensus here, too). Most of the adults were (intentionally?) goofy in that 80s-movies kind of way, so there wasn't a lot to work with for those actors outside of Mike & Nancy's mom, Joyce, and Hopper. I thought the kid actors were uniformly good.

Well, Altered States was 1980, so obviously they would know you can't set up a working sensory deprivation chamber in kiddie pool in a high school gym.

as opposed to a faceless creature coming out of the wall....

Shooting the restaurant owner is the one that baffles me.  Nobody besides them was looking for the girl so why did they need to kill him?

I get what he's saying: it's one thing to accept sci-fi stuff like the upside down and the monster- but for me at least (and based on the endless quibbling in TWD thread on this- others as well), I want the human/normal stuff to make sense. people to act normal, chemistry/physics to act normal, etc.

but again- I didn't really have a problem with the isolation chamber other than using the science teacher as a repeated go-to for encyclopedic knowledge about everything arcane. and even that I don't really mind too much... kinda liked the character.

I can see shooting him, but they should have made it a robbery gone bad instead of a suicide attempt. That didn't fly with me
