Netflix Original: Stranger Things (2 Viewers)

Just finished it tonight and really enjoyed it. Definitely had a Goonies vibe to it.

I'll post some questions once I figure out the spoiler function. I'll be in the Test forum...

I thought the local lore was that you could jump and survive - the sheriff was debunking some story about a drunk doing it in one of the early episodes.  So, maybe Mike assumed it would be ok?
that was my take as well... plus it was a way for the writers to show that this kid would do anything for his friends if they're in trouble.

Binge watched this over the last few days.  I enjoyed it quite a bit.

The bed sheets that 11 was sleeping under (the bed/fort in the basement) were the exact sheets I had in the early 80's.  Had a windbreaker just like the one Steve was wearing.  Pretty sure I had the exact haircut as Mike back in the early 80s when I was 10-12.  ah memories

Looking forward to the next season, but at the same time I expect it will be a drop off from the first.

Thoughts about the end:

Sorry if this was covered already-

What was the reason 11 had to sacrifice herself at the end?  I thought perhaps it was because the work the military was doing with her caused the monster and the rift so maybe it was part of her and she couldn't destroy it without destroying herself.

She may not be gone.  We don't really know what happened, and there's the whole thing about the chief leaving eggos in the woods.

Enjoyed it mostly for the nostalgia.  Overall it was good despite Winona's over the top crappy acting.

Amazing season of television.

Writing was tremendous, the casting was stellar, and the acting was great all-around.  I never thought much of Winona Ryder, but she did a terrific job here.

Had a lot of fun watching this. Fun universe to get into. Of course it was dumb and had tons of holes but who gives a ####. It was highly entertaining.

Just finished watching this. I thought it was really good- the 80s nostalgia, the acting (usually can't stand kid actors, but these kids were good. Winona, otoh), the music. Definitely worth watching.

speculation about next season:

I hope they go into dr brenner's back story some. I want to see the MK Ultra stuff. That whole story always fascinated me, and it is so rich for good storytelling. They need to develop his character anyway, but I'd love to see how he went from whatever he used to be to a cold scientist that can let a captive 11-year-old girl call him 'Papa' and then lead her into a sense dep tank and have her fight monsters, have her kill bunnies with her mind and telepathically eavesdrop on Russian spies.

Does Hop end up working for 'the Man'? Was that what the black sedan pick up outside the hospital was about? Does he end up becoming Fox Mulder because of everything he has seen/done, so it's easier to just co-opt him than let him go on his merry way?

Does Will become a demigorgon baby factory? That nasty slug he puked up in the bathroom- traumatic flashback or dramatic foreshadowing?

definitely in for next season.

Just watched the 2nd episode last night. It's ok and I'll give it another episode but I hope it gets better.

I really loved the first season.  I'm not looking forward to the second season, though - it would be best if they went Fargo style and started a new story.

I could go either way. But I do want to see

why the sheriff got into the black car.

what was that thing that came out of Will? And how is he still alive?

And how are they going to save 11?

There not going to do this but I wouldn't at all have minded an "It" styled flash forward 20 years for S2.

My thoughts on the show:

I'm convinced that 11 was the monster.  There are just too many clues (starting with the fact that she SAID she was the monster).  Plus I LOVED the reference to the X-Men #143 (I think), which was the comic in which Jean Gray/Phoenix becomes Dark Phoenix -- essentially the hero and the monster at the same time.  There were other clues, and I can list them if folks are interested (like the fact that she was so hungry when she first showed up; the monster hadn't really fed yet).

I think that Dr. Brennar pushed her too far and she snapped.  And either turned into or released the monster from her own psyche. So at the end, the only way to kill the monster was to kill herself too.  That's why she said goodbye to her buddy at the end.  She knew that she'd have to kill herself to kill the monster.

Has this theory already been thrown around here?

I have seen this idea elsewhere and I think the comic book thing is the big hint but who knows.  I really enjoyed the show.

I'm like 15 minutes into episode 1 and I've counted like 3 really bad anachronisms/flubs.  What's the budget on this thing?

If you're gonna do that thing you do like with the Goldbergs you're going to hate it.  just stop watching now.
So you're saying that they couldn't pay some schlub a few hundred bucks to scan their scripts and point out moronic errors?

Thanks for the heads up.  I'll finish EP 1 and see what happens

It's taken us about a month now but we watched the 3rd episode one day this week, I think on Tuesday, and it was the first one that had me wanting to see another episode.

and please- if you continue- they use songs that were released later than the timeline of the show. get over it.

I hope this show is OK. So far it isn't.

i loved it. homage-o-riffic.

considering you haven't even brought up winona... yet... this might not be your thing.

eta: but I ddidn't get panty-bunched by 'glaring mistakes' like the smiths playing on the radio.
