Netflix Original: Stranger Things (2 Viewers)

Review con't.  Apparently I should post a TRIGGER WARNING

Overall:   Decent concept with poor execution.   Probably the biggest problem was what I stated above; this show wasn't sure what it wanted to be.  The shotgun effect of horror, supernatural thriller, sci-Fi, conspiracy, and whatever else they could throw in made the whole thing unfocused.

You had a monster, a parallel universe, evil govt scientists, telekinesis, face-huggers, and god knows what else going on.  By the time I got to the finale I no longer cared how it was going to all tie together because it really didn't matter since it was just a hodge-podge of "creepy" stuff.  The should have thrown in a vampire for good measure.

Aside from the spooky stuff most of the other plotlines were dull.  I really didn't care about any of the relationships between the characters.  The writers tried to create multidimensional characters but most of them came out flat.

Of course the dynamic between Mike and 11 was good but it was pretty easy to predict what was going to be the outcome there.   There's a scene in the finale where Mike is telling 11 how things are going to be when everything is all over.  When it was done I told my wife "well, she's gonna die."  Pretty gimmicky in my opinion.

Bottom line is that this could have been much better and pretty much overrated.

ETA:  Forgot to mention the score.  I liked the idea of the whole Tangering Dream/Moroder 80s style synthesizer score.  But it just seemed out of place with the modern day HD cinematography.  I guess what I mean is that they wanted to sound like an 80s movie but it didn't look like one.

I sure hope you don't analyze everything in your life like this...

i sorta felt like it was intentionaly made to be sort of crummy and have holes like basically everything in the 80s did i mean hey they had john candy winning a boat race with his pants as a sail so hey until i see one of these kids use john candys pants to kill an alien i will allow it take that to the bank bromigos

:goodposting:

it's a continuous homage to everything from back then- and IMO, hits the general vibe of it all on the head perfectly. gets enough new stuff (the upside down) in there to keep a story going which also helps bind together the checklist of 80s teen/kid/sci-fi/horror mash-up micro/macro plot-lines and mores, and has some genuinely decent acting from a few of the cast members. I wasn't expecting shakespeare out of this, and I wasn't expecting Kurosawa... but it nailed a mish-mash of Speilberg and his output from back then and put me right into that head-space/zeitgeist. but OMG it's in hi-def!

and yes- candy pants.

what it could use is a scene where john cusak leads the kids in rebuilding a dilapotated seaside restaurant where they perform struxtural renovations refloor redo a kitchen paint and reshingle that sucker during the course of one devo sounding but not really devo song that would rule maybe they could build a new science lab or something with that one kid leading the charge take that to the bank brohans

I've enjoyed it so far, watched first six episodes, two to go, glad they picked it up for a second season.

I haven't seen Matthew Modine much since Full Metal Jacket, he is suitably creepy, sinister and insidious for the role.

Definitely nailed the '80s Spielberg movie vibe, tone and atmosphere with the kids story line, also liked the Tangerine Dream (or esque?) synth based score/soundtrack, similarly pitch perfect for the period.

* Some elements or echoes reminiscent of Firestarter, Scanners, E.T., Pans' Labyrinth, H.P. Lovecraft, etc., sure there were other influences.

We've had the last 2 to watch for probably over a month now. At this point, I don't think I'll finish it. I see that it's picked up for a second season. Does this storyline actually conclude and season 2 will be a new one like American Horror Story or is it a continuation of this story?

Nobody answer this, please.

Season two is scheduled to be released on Halloween.

Harkens back to some of the great 80s movies of our time.  Friggin love it!
Not just those great 80's movies, but also the lifestyle of the 80's. Kids riding home by themselves after dark. Having a BB gun without anyone freaking out. Having to actually stay near the phone because of the chord. Better days....
