I liked the Cherone album a lot when it was first out, but it hasn't aged well. Many would say it didn't age well from the start.
That was brutal. Not one of the top 5 or even top 20...but to say he doesn't have skills isHagar is drunk if he really thinks that Anthony is a top rock bass player, but he is sticking up for his buddy, and he deserves mad props for that.
EVH is a ######## of Axl Rose proportions.![]()

To get him to tone down the shtick just a bit? Dave is basically a parody right now. Sure it's a ####ty way to go about it, but Dave needs to check himself. The ranch dog video as intro to Ice Cream Man was downright preposterous.I still don't get the motivation for EVH to say these things now, especially about DLR with a tour around the corner?
I thought that Klosterman came off pretty credulous in that article. Some of those claims were flat out ridiculous. Particularly since Eddie, while on one hand claiming to never listen to anyone else's music, on the other hand seemed miffed that everyone was copying him in the 80s (a period when he was already supposedly not listening to anyone else).I still don't get the motivation for EVH to say these things now, especially about DLR with a tour around the corner?
The Mike stuff is really just sounding like sour grapes at this point or he just really wants it to be known he is a giant **** and just can't help himself sometimes.Sure he wasn't the greatest bass player(sorry Sammy, not a top guy by any stretch)but his vocals were a staple for the band and he seemed like a very loyal guy until he just couldn't take anymore.
Another surprising thing EVH said in the interview was that he doesn't listen to other music at all now and hasn't for quite sometime.I find this really hard to believe but maybe he is just so wrapped up in his own stuff he never has the time or desire to branch out?One would think with all this time he should have a ton of new material ready to roll out.Another thing was Wolfie is doing a solo project and Eddie is having his hand in on that as well.
I prefer the dog video to karate chops and "I FORGOT THE ####ING WORDS!!!".To get him to tone down the shtick just a bit? Dave is basically a parody right now. People have been saying that Dave was more lounge lizard than rock star for 30 years. I doubt that's going to get him to tone down his act.To get him to tone down the shtick just a bit? I haven't heard the whole album but what I have heard is pretty solid.Sammy's new band (The Circle) recently released a live album. Band = him, Michael Anthony, Jason Bonham, & Vic Johnson.
it's on Spotify, and it's decent. It's prettymuch Van Hagar, Sammy solo, some Montrose, and some Zep covers, but it blows anything VH has done recently out of the water.
I love old VH, but over the years, I've had a growing appreciation for the Van Hagar stuff. Sammy is ten times the musician/singer that DLR was.

Chickenfoot was pretty good straight forward rock as well with Satch on the six string.Sammy's new band (The Circle) recently released a live album. Band = him, Michael Anthony, Jason Bonham, & Vic Johnson.

Always thought this was a fantastic song.https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VeqpRvFaCtIChickenfoot was pretty good straight forward rock as well with Satch on the six string.I really like DLR VH as well as VanHagar.....5150 is one of their signature records IMO and top 5 in the catalog.Sammy's new band (The Circle) recently released a live album. I like it too, but wouldn't rate it above any of the DLR albums.Chickenfoot was pretty good straight forward rock as well with Satch on the six string.Sammy's new band (The Circle) recently released a live album. Band = him, Michael Anthony, Jason Bonham, & Vic Johnson.

I have it ranked above Woman and Children First and Diver Down. Solid. For me, it would go :I have it ranked above Woman and Children First and Diver Down. 1. Fair Warning
2. VH 2
3. VH 1
4. 1984
5. 5150
6. Diver Down
7. Woman and Children First
8. For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
9. A Different Kind of Truth
10. OU812
11. Balance
12. VH 3
Neither is 1984, really.Diver Down is not a good album.
1984 has a few outstanding tunes.Neither is 1984, really.Diver Down is not a good album.
I'd put 5150 over both of those.
I remember when VH3 was coming out, Eddie did an interview in one of the guitar magazines. He basically said Sammy was lazy and wouldn't do recording sessions unless the band paid him extra money to do it.Sammy's new band (The Circle) recently released a live album. Band = him, Michael Anthony, Jason Bonham, & Vic Johnson.

I love Eddie Van Halen the guitarist. He was a huge influence (like he was to millions of others) on me in my teen years as a guitarist. His sound, approach, technique...was/is masterful. What I loved about him more than anything was his rhythm work. He is one the greatest rhythm guitarist ever in rock music. He is well known for his gymnastics on lead but what really made him was his incredible chord structures and phrasing on his rhythm playing and being a composer of some of the greatest riffs in rock history.I remember when VH3 was coming out, Eddie did an interview in one of the guitar magazines. Now, since that time, Eddie's released 3 albums.
VH3
A Kind of Truth
live Tokyo Dome
During that time, Sammy has released the following:
Red Voodoo
Ten 13
Not For Sale
Livin' It Up
Cosmic Universal Fashion
Chickenfoot
Chickenfoot III
Sammy & Friends
Lite Roast
LIve: Hallelujah
At Your Service (Live)
Man, that Sammy sure is lazy.
Oh, God, I say this in the best way possible but #### this.Diver Down is not a good album.
Not nearly their best...but far from a bad album. It certainly is good in my book.Oh, God, I say this in the best way possible but #### this.Diver Down is not a good album.
It was a disaster. Shame because Gary is a heck of a vocalist. But the album bombed (and it was really weak actually) and the tour bombed...it was a bad time for the band.I've seen VH with Sammy, seen VH with Gary, have never seen VH with DLR, so I will probably go when they come to town.
That said, I would much rather see Gary than DLR at this point. His concert had a great mix of both Dave and Sammy songs, and he can hit all the notes. Just look past that he was relegated to standing by the drum kit most of the time.
The truth hurts.Oh, God, I say this in the best way possible but #### this.Diver Down is not a good album.
While it probably is tied with Women and Children First as my least favorite, it does actually have one of my favorite VH songs on it: Little Guitars. I also like Dancing in the Streets, Hang 'em High, and Pretty Woman. Actually, it's not so bad IMO. Every band has a "worst" album so if this is it (for the original band anyway) that's pretty ####### good.Ketamine Dreams said:The truth hurts.rockaction said:Oh, God, I say this in the best way possible but #### this.Diver Down is not a good album.
I wouldn't go that far, but I think it only beats out VH3 and A different Kind of Truth.Diver Down is the worst VH album (of any era).
All things considered, Van Halen has a pretty freaking good catalog during the DLR years (are there any other?).While it probably is tied with Women and Children First as my least favorite, it does actually have one of my favorite VH songs on it: Little Guitars. Always liked The Full Bug a lot too since it had heaviest sound on Diver Down especially where it fell on the album.1984 has a few outstanding tunes.Neither is 1984, really.Diver Down is not a good album.
I'd put 5150 over both of those.
Panama (even though it's played out it is a scorcher)
Drop Dead Legs
Top Jimmy
Hot For Teacher
I'll Wait
Depending on my mood I could put 5150 over it. I love 5150.
Diver Down has three truly great VH songs. Little Guitars, Hang Em High and Secrets.
I liked VH3 more than most, although a lot of it hasn't aged well for me, and thus it'd be bottom 3 for me (along with Diver Down and WC&F or OU812).I wouldn't go that far, but I think it only beats out VH3 and A different Kind of Truth.Diver Down is the worst VH album (of any era).
You just blew my mind sir! I really didn't know this existed. Listening right now...Also a fan of Van Halen Zero (demo boot)
Eh, it's good, but not great. And I often dock it for Loss of Control being the biggest tease ever. The first 15 seconds of that song is so awesome and then the rest of it sucks.Women and Children First is being criminally underrated in this thread.
There are some real gems on there though. I wouldn't fault anyone for ranking it anywhere in their top 5, but ranking it below Diver Down (which is essentially an album of covers) or the Hagar records is a hanging offense IMO.Eh, it's good, but not great. ), but hey, that's me. I like 5150 quite a bit but aside from "Poundcake," there's not much I like from the Hagar Era beyond that album. Then again, my tastes obviously skew heavy. No way. I think the Hagar era was as good as the Roth era (I enjoy both a lot, and which one I prefer usually depends on which one I am listening to), but hey, that's me.

. Loss of Control by far and away soars above anything on Women and Children (once you get past childish infatuations with Everybody Wants Some and And The Cradle...).Balance has a few amazing tunes.F.U.C.K. is pretty hard-rocking, although I gave that a spin recently and it wasn't as good as I remembered it being. EVH's brown sound was gone and the melodies are sometimes absent. I still love some tracks from that, regardless (Pleasure Dome, Right Now, Poundcake).
Balance is pretty underrated.

Those two songs are sick.
