Mort this morning saying Peyton is leading his ballot right now.

At first I questioned it...then remembering the stretch they are on and that they cannot run the ball that well right now...it was interesting.

With some of the other guys faltering lately (though, his game against Cleveland does not help)...he may be putting himself in position if they keep winning and he keeps playing well.

Indy is having trouble running the ball. They are 31st in the league in rushing yards per game. But do you know who is 32nd? Arizona.

In other words, Kurt Warner would still be at the top of my ballot. Manning would be top 5, though.

True...though it helps that Warner plays in the NFC West too.Balanced out though that they have played the AFC and NFC East while the Colts picked up the AFC and NFC North.

Not long ago Manning even in the conversation would have been laughed at this year though.

I agree with you that he is not yet the leader...but it could get interesting.

I swear. Where's the love for D'Angelo Williams. Dude has tore it up for 1300 total yards and leads the league in TDs with 15. He has an outside shot for 1600 total yards and 20 TDs but gets no MVP talk? What has the NFL come to?

D-Will is the MVP of my fantasy team. But it is hard to call a guy the MVP of the league when he splits carries the way D-Will does. He is not carrying his own team on his shoulders, put it that way. I admire your passion for him though.

I doubt Warner hurt his chances much, but the Cardinals getting flattened like they did at home yesterday didn't help matters.

Looks like Peterson vs Turner next week could have major MVP ramifications.

I disagree - Warner hurt his chances yesterday. He has two problems on his resume - not enough "big" wins, and too many turnovers (INTs AND lost fumbles combined). Peterson and Turner were the two big winners yesterday in the MVP chase (Peyton didn't throw enough TDs inside the 5 yard line yesterday to help his cause - which is silly but is basically the reality of things. Most the other QB candidates lost - Brees, Warner, Eli, Collins - and Ryan was hurt because Turner's candidacy for MVP went up).

Yes, you may be right about Warner. I think it's looking like Peterson versus Turner right now.

Personally, I think they should split the thing in half and give it to Harrison and Polamalu. Completely unbiased opinion.

I saw a couple of sports shows on tv state that Peyton will win another MVP this year. And they were making it sound like he was pulling away from the field.

For me right now it's P. Manning Vs. ADP. Turner probably a close 3rd. I'll give an honorable mention to Deangelo Williams but he'd never win it as mentioned he splits carries but his numbers are impressive and I do believe he's "carried" his team a couple games this year. IMO Warner is dropping fast, too many turnovers and a terrible record outside his terrible division.

I'd lean towards ADP, especially if he can lead them to the playoffs.

IIRC, the Vikings range of outcomes span from getting a bye to missing the playoffs altogether.

I believe you are correct. When do they actaully vote? Minnesotas season outcome could have a huge effect on the MVP race, especially if ADP carries them out of nowhere to a 1st Round Bye.

Technically ballots are due after the regular season ends, but I am not sure the earliest voters can submit their ballot. Unlike baseball, only 10 people vote for MVP, and in a year like this year one would hope the voters will wait it out til the end of the regular season. Last year Brady was a unanimous pick, so some folks may have sent in their vote early.

If Demarcus Ware breaks Strahan's sack record any chance he wins the MVP? As of right now I believe he has 19 sacks and 5 forced fumbles with 2 games to go. Seems like this year in the MVP race no one has really set themself apart unlike the past couple of mvp races ala Brady in 07.

I think he needs two other things to have any shot:1. Dallas MUST make the playoffs2. He must be the clear-cut MVP choice out of the defensive players. He isn't right now because of Pitt's James Harrison (and other defensive standouts this season).Peyton's performance last night did not help Ware's cause. MVP almost always goes to a QB or RB - and it takes extraordinary circumstances for that not to happen. Ware needed Peyton and Peterson to have slow finishes to the season.

If the Vikings win their final two and the Panthers or Giants lose their final two giving the Vikes the #2 seed, Peterson gets it.

If the Vikings go 1-1 or 0-2 Manning gets it

If the Falcons go 2-0 and Turner goes crazy in those games he's in the running with Peyton.

otherwise its gonna be one of the closest votes between Manning and Peterson.

I think Peterson needs to do more than just have them win. Especially with what Manning did last night. And agreed...if Turner goes crazy and catches or gets close to Peterson in yardage and the Falcons make the playoffs...with the TD differential between he and Peterson, Turner could get the nod.I just think the stretch the Colts are on to get in and Manning's numbers climbing may have put him in (and QBs generally will get the nod over a RB if its close).

isnt mort the idiot that split his MVP vote one year for Warner and Faulk?

Accorinf to this link, it looks like there are only 10 voters

The problem is of the five best QBs, two of them will win other awards, and the other three have only 21 wins between them. I don't think Manning deserves it, but I don't have a huge problem if he wins it. This is a good year to give it to a RB, and Peterson or Turner would be worthy winners. I like AD to get it, especially if he plays well the next two weeks.

Dumb question, I'm sure. Is there a difference between the "NFL MVP Award" and the "USA Today NFL MVP Award"? I didn't think a polling of USA Today editors/reporters would decide the NFL's MVP? ETA: OK, maybe I'm not as dumb as I thought. This article says that it's "a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league."

bah, see Modog's link...he's too darn quick!

HUGE difference. Whenever someone is referred to as a former MVP, two-time MVP, etc., the AP award is the only one taken into account. Over time, no one cares who won the USA Today MVP award, the Sporting News MVP award, etc. The AP award is the one that matters.

Yeah, I'm an idiot. Didn't read close enough.

I agree with this, but note that the AP MVP award began in 1957.From 1938 to 1946, the Joe Carr trophy was *the* MVP award, and from 1948 to 1956, the UPI MVP award was *the* MVP award (though for some reason UPI did not select a winner in 1949, 1950, and 1952). Also, the UPI award continued through 1969, so I'm not sure if the AP award was immediately recognized as the offical award, or if it took some time. (The AP and UPI chose different MVPs in 1957, 1962, and 1963.)

*bow* Now that's impressive knowledge. Thanks. It makes sense that it's evolved with the development of the game, but I definitely had no clue whatsoever.

It's all on Wikipedia. :stirspot: I had looked something up that led me to that page previously, so I knew where to look.

Philip Rivers with a big game Sunday might actual win the MVP award, and he'd also be a worthy recipient.
:thumbup:I assume the Chargers will be favored to win this week, so it is likely that his team will make the playoffs. The cases for Warner, Favre, Peterson, and Portis have faded. IMO Rivers is more deserving than Turner. Who else is even in the running at this point? Also, how embarassing would this be for the NFL, that its MVP was not even selected for the Pro Bowl. They really need to change the voting so fan voting has more of a minimal effect and the timing of the voting occurs during the playoffs rather than during the regular season, with results announced after only 15 of the 17 weeks of the regular season.ETA: Forgot about Peyton. I'm sure he will win.

I don't see Rivers beating out Peyton. Nice story for SD to go from dead to a playoff birth, but I can't see the MVP going to someone on an 8-8 team.

cross warner off the list after today. should cassel's name be thrown in the mix? peyton seems like a cop out for some reason. almost like, well no one else really stands out, let's give it to that manning guy, he's pretty good.

d will just scored another td - not sure how this guy isn't mentioned more. 17 TDs on what is the looks like the best team in the league right now.

i think brees takes it if he breaks marino's record.

Probably not, but I think Rivers would be more worthy.Better TD/INT ratio and well over a yard more per pass attempt.
I agree with you . . . funny, cause I had Rivers on my MVP candidates list months ago (in the MVP threads) and people thought I was nuts.

 Although Cassel - NO. Very good story, but if the MVP is supposed to indicate which player the team can least afford to lose, Cassel may be a reason against Tom Brady winning it in the future. BTW - thank you :lmao:

IMO, no way does Brees get much consideration on a last place team out of playoff consideration. And he would need 402 yards against Carolina. The Panthers may have nothing to play for, but I doubt they would be that bad.

One of the NFC's Pro Bowl Running Backs better call in sick for the Pro Bowl so Deangelo Williams gets his invite. He should be on the very short list of MVP candidates and its a travesty that hes not even a pro bowler. Leads the league in TD's, averages over five yards a carry and has his team contending for the best record in the NFC.

Haven't you been arguing against Warner, saying a guy from a 9-7 or 10-6 team never wins the MVP? And now you are touting a guy from a team that is 7-8? Or am I confusing you with someone else? Anyway, I would say that Peyton Manning has this all locked up now. And he should. He is the MVP.

I'm curious if someone has an exceptional week 17 and locks this up then. Could one final week matter?

Very, very doubtful. The only serious MVP candidate whose team doesn't have a playoff spot locked up already is Adrian Peterson, and unless he runs for 200+ yards and carries the Vikings into the playoffs, I don't see it.
